00:00U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth fired Army Chief of Staff Randy George on Thursday,
00:06the latest purge among the Pentagon's most senior ranks. That's according to two defense
00:11officials and a source familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters. The Pentagon confirmed that
00:16George, who had more than a year left in his term, will be retiring effective immediately.
00:21The department did not give a reason for George's departure, but said in a statement it was grateful
00:26for his decades of service. An infantry officer who served in Iraq and Afghanistan,
00:32George was confirmed to the top Army post in 2023, terms in the role usually run for four years.
00:39Prior to the job, he was the Vice Chief of the Army and before that, the Senior Military Advisor
00:45to then Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. The office for George did not immediately respond to a request
00:51for comment. His departure comes as the U.S. military builds up its forces in the Middle East
00:57while carrying out operations against Iran.
