00:00Hi, I'm Tyler West, and this is race champion Alfie Watts.
00:03Welcome to Race Across the World, The Detour.
00:06This is your travel buddy for the show that's got us all reaching for the Factor 50.
00:10Ginger, like, I'm dying here.
00:13And witnessing a medical miracle.
00:14We just want to scratch this itch we've had for the last five years.
00:18And charming the locals with the best compliments.
00:21Your English is very good.
00:22I'm Australian.
00:23Ah, are you?
00:27We're here to explore all things Race Across the World.
00:31Now, you can expect travel tales, travel fails, and all the big questions.
00:34Who's going to get to the checkpoint last?
00:36Who's going to make it to the end?
00:38Who's got the passports again?
00:40Plus, and this is very exciting, this bit, at the end of each show,
00:42I'll be playing you an exclusive clip that you will not see or hear anywhere else, okay?
00:47Come on. Exactly, it's very exciting.
00:49It'll be a short teaser for what's to come in episode two of Race Across the World.
00:53So today is a very, very good day.
00:55To get you into the race mood, sign your name into the book
00:58and shimmy into that modesty cocoon
01:00and help yourself to a lovely dry sandwich
01:03because you have made it to Race Across the World The Detour.
01:10Right, if you're still in Palermo and haven't quite made it to Foscado yet,
01:13then turn back because there are spoilers ahead there happening right now.
01:17Go and watch the first leg of Race Across the World Series 6 on BBC iPlayer
01:20and we'll be waiting right here for you.
01:22Now that's sorted, let's meet the globetrotters
01:25who managed to book direct transport to the Detour studio.
01:29This week and every week, I will be joined by a resident travel expert.
01:32He's the winner of Series 4 and frankly, a child prodigy.
01:36He's the Mozart of getting on a bus.
01:38He definitely wrote that himself.
01:40It's my younger, smarter little brother.
01:42Alfie Watts in the studio.
01:43Thank you, Tyler.
01:45Mozart?
01:46Listen.
01:46Mozart.
01:47Listen, it's true.
01:49It's not true.
01:50It's definitely not true.
01:51I don't think you can be the Mozart of getting on a bus.
01:52Yeah.
01:53But it's going in my LinkedIn either way.
01:54Fine.
01:55I've got something to say, mate.
01:56You've done the show.
01:57Yeah, we have.
01:58We have.
01:59I know what you're going to say next.
02:00You didn't quite win it.
02:02No.
02:02You were very close.
02:04Yeah, everything looks bigger on TV.
02:05It was just literally a few centimetres in it.
02:07I just have a question.
02:08When you opened that book, how many names were on that page?
02:10There was just two more names on that page.
02:12But we were there.
02:13We were metres away.
02:14It was because of the boat.
02:15It was because of the boat.
02:16It was because of the boat.
02:17Anyway, what I can say is at the end of each episode of The Detour,
02:21I will bring you my optimal route for this week's leg of the race.
02:24Now, it will be the one that gets you there quickly,
02:26but crucially, it also allows for some eye-catching, unmissable detours.
02:29Clues in the name.
02:30Nice.
02:30And we'll be joined by some unreal guests along the way.
02:33So, who has managed to sign the book this week?
02:36It's actor, singer, celebrity racer,
02:38and I heard she's got a phenomenal fiancΓ©.
02:40It's Molly Rainford!
02:42Come on!
02:43Yeah.
02:43Oh, that was true.
02:44Yeah, yeah, exactly.
02:45An all-round legend, actor, and celebrity racer.
02:48Collar bikinis in the studio.
02:50In a strong leather jacket as well.
02:52Yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:53Very strong leather jacket.
02:54I might regret it.
02:54I might regret it.
02:55Who knows?
02:56So, listen, what a start to the series and what an end to the episode.
02:59First up, well done to this leg's winners, siblings, Katie and Harrison.
03:04Yes!
03:05Yes!
03:07Yes!
03:08We did it!
03:09We did it!
03:11Quick, get it down.
03:11Hi.
03:12Every minute counts.
03:13Very nice.
03:15I don't think I've ever seen someone who's won write in the book so fast and then say,
03:19write quicker as well.
03:21Like, every single second matters.
03:22Molly, what was it about Katie and Harrison's strategy that put them in that first place?
03:27Was it saving the β¬1.80 on the Mayo?
03:29It might have been.
03:30Do you know what?
03:31I feel like with those two, especially Harrison, he was all for, you know, saving the pennies.
03:37But actually, I thought they had quite an expensive leg, but they did go with very quick solutions,
03:43which I found, like, the taxi straight off the bat.
03:46They were good with, like, thinking quickly on their feet, I think.
03:48Yeah.
03:49I mean, it was mad.
03:50The ones that won it, yeah, he was on it from the get-go.
03:52He was like, even when, before they said go, I remember, like, me, me and me,
03:57it's like loafing around and being like, oh, it's great size, but forgetting that we're actually in
04:01the race.
04:02He was on it from the get-go and he was like, you've got to walk faster.
04:05And that's when I realised, yeah, yeah, you know what.
04:07They hadn't even started at that point.
04:08They hadn't even started.
04:09There's no prizes for getting to the start line first.
04:11Yeah, yeah.
04:12I had predicted it from the beginning.
04:14I was like, that guy's winning.
04:15Yeah.
04:16So I reckon it's probably them, yeah.
04:18Yeah.
04:18OK, well, look, I mean, Mark as well, he's a man I can relate to because he's dedicated to his
04:22snacks,
04:23right?
04:23My man loves eating.
04:25And there was one point where he's eating a whole melon with a teaspoon
04:28and there's like a flash mob going on in front of him.
04:30It's great.
04:30And he's like, yeah, don't worry about me, you're right.
04:32I've got my melon.
04:33Yeah.
04:34Now, Molly Collar, what was, would you say, some of the most desperate snacks
04:37that you've turned to when you're all out of cash?
04:40Oh, yeah.
04:40I remember one day, you know, in the beginning, we didn't count our money.
04:45So we probably-
04:46Stock and start, mate.
04:46We're all, you know, forgotten.
04:48Like, count your budget, mate.
04:49It took us three hours to find where the place was.
04:53Yeah.
04:53You know, and it was, sun was set and everyone was gone.
04:55And then we was like, I'm kind of hungry.
04:57So at first, we were all like steak and rice, you know what I mean?
04:59Yeah.
05:00And then we realised, we're running out of money here.
05:02So I turned to one day, 24 hours, had a packet of Oreos.
05:05Yeah.
05:06And you had nothing to dip it in as well.
05:07Nothing.
05:07Because you could have thought, you've even got one or the other when you're racing as well.
05:10You never have the milk and biscuits.
05:11You have one or the other.
05:12It is literally that.
05:14Mose, what did you eat?
05:15Uh, well, what didn't we eat, Ty?
05:17To be fair.
05:18Yeah.
05:18I'm not involved.
05:48No, do you know what?
05:49No, I think we had maybe a hundred dollars.
05:54No way.
05:56Seriously.
05:57My maths was never winning that.
05:59We had one peso.
06:01What did you do?
06:03No.
06:03Was you giving it away?
06:04I have no idea how we finished that race.
06:07I was on top of the Andes like, Mary, how did we get here?
06:11You finished second, didn't you?
06:13No, no, no.
06:13Yeah.
06:15How bad was everyone else?
06:18We've still got a few, like, Belize dollars somewhere.
06:20Yeah.
06:21Like, just as a souvenir.
06:22Just can't redeem them.
06:24But at the moment, it does feel pretty close between them all, Colin.
06:28I mean, it was pretty interesting detours that were taken throughout this first episode, right?
06:32Joe and Kush made a beeline for work in Sorrento.
06:35Andrew and Molly went kayaking in Maratuya.
06:37But are you surprised it's this close at the minute?
06:40I feel like they've done their homework, innit?
06:43Like, you know, good on them, you know, because, you know, I don't really like homework.
06:48But, you know, yeah, I actually am surprised because usually at first,
06:53you'd see one group that's clearly on it more than another.
06:56But this year, it's going to be close.
06:59Now, I think it's a good moment in the podcast to get to know our teams a little bit better,
07:02right?
07:02And the first pair that we met in this episode were Scouse lads Joe and Kush.
07:06I think Scouse is the perfect people to travel.
07:09We're not shy to, like, say hello to someone on the street.
07:12You always say,
07:13Oh, babe, say, you're right there, love.
07:16If you have a proper little, like, this little charm about Scouse or anything.
07:20Molly, do you think the, um, do you think the gift of the gab is going to help them on
07:24this course?
07:24I do.
07:25I mean, I love a Scouse accent, but I do think, yeah, sorry about that.
07:30Yeah, cheers.
07:31Anyway, um...
07:33One awful way to get dumped, by the way.
07:36Thank you very much.
07:38This early on into the series, great.
07:40Anyway, um, yeah, I know, I do love a Scouse accent,
07:44but I do think that is probably even harder to translate.
07:47No, but I do think they've got, like, the young lad charm.
07:51I feel like that, you know, hitchhiking will definitely be way easier for them, too.
07:55A hundred percent.
07:56I'm getting that vibe.
07:56Do you think?
07:56Yeah.
07:57I've been there as, like, two 20-year-olds going on this show,
08:01and it feels harder.
08:02Oh.
08:03Because I feel like, I don't know, there's kind of more of like,
08:06I don't know, like, a more kind of lovey vibe with older people.
08:10True.
08:10Maybe more trust.
08:12Maybe kind of, like, two young lads standing on the side of the street,
08:14like, oh, what do they want, kind of thing.
08:16So I think it can work against them just as much as it can work for them.
08:19Probably, like, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed right now,
08:21but it's going to get beaten up.
08:25I know what you mean, lad.
08:26Yeah.
08:27That's it.
08:28That's, uh, that was an attempt.
08:30That was a good attempt.
08:30Oh, babe, babe.
08:32No, I mean, they are the youngest pairs,
08:35some of the youngest contestants we've ever had racing before, right?
08:37Yeah.
08:37Did you ever think about travelling to these sort of places at that age?
08:40I have more Magaluf.
08:44Less Mongolia, more Magaluf.
08:46Yeah, yeah.
08:46I just didn't think, I didn't think I have the capability to get that far.
08:50Do you know what I mean?
08:50That felt like such a different place, like a different world altogether.
08:53So I don't think I've really ever thought I'd get that far.
08:57Hmm.
08:57So, Colin, when you were, like, 20,
08:58do you think that you would have ever been able to do race across the world?
09:01Absolutely, no chance.
09:03At what point would you have felt?
09:0420-year-old, Colin.
09:05I mean, 30, 30, 30, when I was old, was I when I'd done the race?
09:0732-year-old Colin, I barely managed it.
09:10Let alone for the extra 10 years.
09:11Let alone, yeah, yeah.
09:12Do you know what I mean?
09:13I was supposed to get, you know, wiser and whatever.
09:15You know what I mean?
09:15That's all paper.
09:16But, but, but, um, yeah.
09:1820-year-old Colin would have blown the, blown the budget and, oof.
09:21And be like, Mary, come on.
09:23Last for a living.
09:24What was everyone saying when we were 20?
09:26YOLO.
09:27YOLO.
09:28YOLO days.
09:29If I lose the money, it don't matter.
09:30YOLO.
09:31It don't matter.
09:32Yeah, yeah, exactly.
09:34No, but it's all well and good when you start the race,
09:36because you think, oh, you know, I'm in a race, like, but we've got ages.
09:40We've got, you know, so many countries to get through.
09:42And then, and then they say go.
09:44And then competition mode gets it.
09:46One of the funniest things as well that we completely dust over
09:48and none of us ever talk about is at the start line,
09:50everybody just runs in different directions.
09:52There's no need, guys.
09:53Guys, there's no need.
09:54No rhyme or reason.
09:55You run and then you go, right, let's sit down here and look at the map.
09:58Yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:59These guys are not running to Mongolia.
10:01It's fine.
10:02It's embarrassing as well, though, when you, when you watch it back, you're like,
10:04look at this guy.
10:06Yeah, why are you running?
10:06Where are you running to, bro?
10:08You've got five, eight weeks, bro.
10:10You're going to run there now, yeah?
10:12Maybe it's like, if I get my heart rate up, I'll make better decisions.
10:15I don't know, but.
10:16We also saw siblings Harrison and Katie who made it to Foscado first,
10:20which is really exciting to be first.
10:22I mean, we didn't come first in a leg miles till like,
10:25what was it?
10:26The second to last one, the penultimate one.
10:27We definitely came first a couple of times.
10:30Oh, the foot race don't count.
10:31The foot race absolutely counts.
10:33The foot race was like 30 seconds.
10:33Look, the boys, the boys, the boys.
10:35Listen to this panel of unexperienced first places.
10:39All I can, just.
10:40Wow.
10:41Wow.
10:42Wow.
10:43Wow.
10:43Look.
10:43Wow.
10:44That might run sometimes.
10:46That's why I'm sat over here.
10:47So Jess changes people, do you know what I mean?
10:49Not yet.
10:51See, that sits there.
10:52Wow, Alfie.
10:52Colin, we heard that Harrison is the planner and Katie's more laid back, right?
10:56Can you relate to this dynamic at all?
10:58Oh, you know what?
10:59I mean, I remember our first interview and our plan was no plan, so no.
11:04Okay.
11:04Brilliant.
11:05No, I mean, we got better.
11:06We got more savvy.
11:07Yeah.
11:07But they're a bit savvy at the beginning.
11:09Maybe they'll get exhausted.
11:11They will get exhausted.
11:12And then maybe, you know, the cracks will start to show.
11:14Yeah.
11:14It's strong now, but you know.
11:15It's a hard mentality to run at for eight weeks.
11:18Yeah.
11:19It's mentally exhausting, isn't it?
11:20Yeah, it really is.
11:21Yeah.
11:21So I think there needs to be a degree of like, particularly in maybe like, you can't say
11:25it for an elimination leg, but if that, you know, in leg two or four where the stakes
11:29are lower, just take it chill.
11:31I think it's easier to chase.
11:33Yeah.
11:33I think it's easier to chase.
11:34It's easier to chase because when you're an underdog, you're like, oh, I'm a loser anyway.
11:37Yeah.
11:38I might as well just, you know, lose fast.
11:40You're a loser.
11:41I 100% agree though, because especially in our penultimate leg, we were first and I felt
11:48way more pressure being first in that position than I did like ever being third place, last.
11:53Because you know what you need to do.
11:54You're getting chased out.
11:55But yeah, you can't, you can't get better than first.
11:58So there's a lot of pressure.
11:59And you're constantly looking over your shoulder.
12:01Yeah.
12:02Like always.
12:03Yeah.
12:03It's constantly like, oh, like we're ahead.
12:05And you have to remember, you've got, you have to enjoy the race.
12:07Look at the places that they're going through.
12:09It's unbelievable.
12:09Every time I watch a series, I just get jealous of where they went.
12:12Do you know what I mean?
12:13And I'm like, oh, I would have loved to have done that route.
12:15I only wanted to do the show for another three weeks.
12:17Honestly.
12:18Once we finished, once you cried our eyes out at the book saying, oh no, we've come second.
12:21We're like, can we do it again?
12:22Yeah.
12:22Can we do it more?
12:23We go back.
12:24It's like, is there anywhere else you want to send us?
12:26We also saw Joe and Kush with their competitive side.
12:29All right.
12:29What did we make at a situation when they were at the ferry?
12:32I see you're making sound effects already, Alfie.
12:33I've got an unpopular opinion about this.
12:35Oh, go on.
12:36I'd have helped them.
12:37What, Andrew and Molly?
12:38Yeah.
12:38Would you?
12:39You would have helped them.
12:39Leg one, guys.
12:41Doesn't matter.
12:41Good karma.
12:42Get on your side.
12:43Whoa.
12:43Hang on.
12:44Let's break it down.
12:45Break it down.
12:45You're on your own here, Ralph.
12:47What was it, like 10 euros?
12:49They said, swap a tenner for a tenner.
12:51What I'd have done in that situation, by the way,
12:53the pound is stronger than the euro.
12:55So I'd have said, give me 20 quid for 20 euros
12:57and make yourself five quid.
12:59Done.
12:59Okay.
13:00So you would have ripped them off.
13:02But I helped them.
13:03Okay.
13:03Good karma is going to come your way, yeah.
13:05Interesting.
13:05You know what?
13:06Nah.
13:07Um, because...
13:08You're not having it.
13:09Because in the beginning, in the beginning, sorry,
13:11I don't know you.
13:12Yeah.
13:14It's the fairest point.
13:15No, I kind of agreed with how they acted.
13:18I'm very competitive though, so that's probably why.
13:20I would have maybe.
13:21But, but no, I feel like there's a lot at stake, remember,
13:26in this race.
13:26Yeah.
13:26You know, there's, there's a big prize.
13:29And like, you're so early on, every penny counts at that point.
13:33So, you know, especially like we said, you get stung at the end
13:36with something that you got paid for and you think,
13:38oh no, I've given them 20 quid.
13:40Yeah.
13:40So I feel like they were right.
13:42You know, it's a competition at the end of the day.
13:44Right, now let's take a look at the father-daughter duo,
13:47Andrew and Molly.
13:47So Andrew has explained that one of his special skills, and I quote,
13:51is being in a place a second time, I can remember where everything is.
13:56I don't think that's going to work on Race Across the World.
13:59It's not a handy thing to-
14:00He has watched the show before.
14:01Yeah, I know, do you know what I mean?
14:02It's like, right, so let me go there once,
14:03and I'll remember it when I come back here.
14:04Like, you're not coming back here.
14:05No.
14:05It's so funny, because I can relate to him.
14:07Yeah.
14:07I definitely have that skill, but it's, it's, it's void on the race.
14:11It doesn't have to happen.
14:12Yeah, me when I'm on an all-inclusive holiday, you know.
14:14I know the way to the bar, I know the way back to the Sun Lounge.
14:17That's where dinner gets served.
14:18Yeah.
14:19That's where the bar is.
14:20Yeah, I got it now.
14:22It's funny, it's funny.
14:24So I'm sure a lot of fathers and daughter duos would be able to relate to like,
14:28their dynamics in their relationship.
14:30Like, Andrew, like, Molly's just Andrew's little girl.
14:33Yeah.
14:34But do you think that that might change throughout the rest of the race,
14:38or do you reckon it will strengthen it?
14:39I think it might change, because especially with the little mishap with the,
14:43with the map situation.
14:44Yeah, of course.
14:45I feel like he might start trusting her as kind of her own adult,
14:50and kind of seeing that she's quite good at making decisions too,
14:52and kind of maybe taking a little bit of a backseat when she was there.
14:57It's one of the beauties of this show, isn't it?
14:57Yeah.
14:57Because that relationship can really develop over a period of eight weeks.
15:01You know, Andrew might think that it's like this whole cotton wool kind of situation,
15:04and then in eight weeks' time, while she's guiding him through Mongolia,
15:08it's like, wow, I didn't know my daughter could do this.
15:11And like you said, like, it, you know, it does take a lot out of you
15:15to make all those decisions all the time.
15:17So if he kept going that way, he'd probably burn out.
15:19Yeah.
15:19So it's probably good if he gives her a bit of the load.
15:21And he's, yeah, he needs to give over some responsibility.
15:23Yeah.
15:23Because travelling with a parent must be tough.
15:25Yeah.
15:25Oh, yeah.
15:26Like, the disagreements.
15:27I wouldn't want to do that.
15:28Especially, like, adult child and parent.
15:30Yeah.
15:31And your dad's a teacher.
15:32Yeah.
15:33He's the smartest in the room.
15:34It's like double parents.
15:35Yeah, exactly.
15:36I mean, but they did have the misunderstanding over the map stand.
15:42So let alone when you're then looking at a map stand,
15:44and you're not really sure the general navigation of it all,
15:47it's a big stress.
15:48And that was throughout this whole first episode.
15:49He's going to know what the terrain is, though.
15:51Exactly.
15:52No, all right.
15:54On the map, on the map, he's going to be like, oh, that's a mountain area.
15:59And she's going to be like, but dad, does that help us in the race?
16:02Yeah, yeah, yeah.
16:03That line there means it's steeper.
16:04That's what he's going to be like, you know, there's a little selfies.
16:06And then he goes, oh, I've been here before.
16:08I remember where everything is.
16:09Yeah, yeah, yeah.
16:10That's it.
16:11But I mean, was there ever a time when you was on the race, Colin,
16:13that not being able to read a map left you in a sticky situation?
16:17Or like wrong directions?
16:19Oh, that was all the same.
16:21Also, I lost a map.
16:23Joined the club.
16:24Yeah, you did as well, so you've got something in common.
16:26Yeah, we lost it on day two.
16:27So Mary would draw, like, I don't know what she's doing.
16:30Let's talk about this, because we did the same thing.
16:32It doesn't help.
16:33It doesn't help.
16:34Having a map on a piece of paper that you drew isn't a map.
16:37It's a drawing of what you think somewhere looks like.
16:40And they were sneaky as well.
16:41So they would, like, put the checkpoint in a town that's not on the map.
16:45So I was like, come on, guys.
16:46This ain't helping us out, is it?
16:48It's not, but you have to read between the lines.
16:50I was like, come on, mate.
16:50Yeah.
16:51I'm not trying to discover myself.
16:52I'm trying to get to the checkpoint, you know?
16:54Yeah.
16:55Now, our penultimate pairing are cousins Pooja and Roshni.
16:59Now, Pooja prayed to win, whereas Roshni was, like,
17:02praying for her ankles not to break.
17:04I think she thinks she's some gladiators.
17:06It's not that kind of show.
17:08But Molly, I mean, they're both extremely accomplished.
17:10Yeah, they're smart, they're driven individuals.
17:12Like, they're on it.
17:13Yeah.
17:14What did you make of their journey throughout the first leg?
17:16They seem like they're getting their feet.
17:19Mm.
17:19Feel like they're in a good place, finding their feet.
17:21And they've been fed well.
17:22Yeah.
17:23So win-win.
17:23They're steady, aren't they?
17:24They are.
17:24They feel like a very sort of steady, safe bet.
17:28A safe team, yeah.
17:29Yeah.
17:29Yeah, they're taking their time a little bit, but...
17:32A little bit.
17:33A little bit.
17:33No, we don't know.
17:34We're in a race.
17:35Speed demon over here.
17:36We're in a race.
17:37But they said, right, they both said that they wanted to use the race as a way to reconnect,
17:42because they didn't get to spend much time together.
17:44I mean, on the race, you 100% get to spend the most amount of time together.
17:48Yeah, a bit too much, though, innit?
17:49Yeah.
17:49Uninterrupted.
17:50Yeah.
17:50Yeah, absolutely.
17:51It's one part I was worried about, really.
17:53Yeah.
17:54That wasn't what you were saying, was it?
17:55No.
17:56Don't need any more time together.
17:58Yeah, I'm all right.
17:58Yeah, I mean, this feels like a relatable situation for a lot of people, right, Collar?
18:02Yeah.
18:02To be able to spend more time.
18:04Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
18:05I think that's the beauty of it, but then it's also, it panics you because you're like,
18:08right, OK, this is 24 hours a day together.
18:10He was on buses all the time, and then after a while, Mary just stopped sitting next to me.
18:17That's giant.
18:18When you watch the show as such a fan at home, it just goes,
18:20oh, yeah, they've travelled from here to here,
18:22and it's just like a 15-hour bus only that happens in three seconds.
18:25I give that 15 hours, a lot happened on that bus.
18:28Yeah, I give.
18:28Let me tell you, it really did.
18:30Right, Margot and Mark.
18:32Now, an unbelievable bond between this brother and sister-in-law.
18:36Obviously, they've got a really touching story,
18:38but we do have to address the modesty cocoon, OK?
18:42So, it's just, when this happened, what is happening?
18:45Moles, you had to burn yours, didn't you?
18:46Did I?
18:47After the $5 sex motel that we stayed in.
18:49Oh, yeah.
18:50Guys, to give context, it was...
18:52I think context is really important.
18:53Yeah.
18:54Oh, yeah, let me give context on that.
18:56So, it was like a mattress covered in plastic.
18:58There was like a sticky tissue dispenser above the bed.
19:01That was, yeah.
19:01There was a lot going on, and we were like,
19:03we are not sleeping in this place, but we had to sleep in the sleeping bag.
19:06Oh, no, yeah.
19:06I slept on top of the duvet in the sleeping bag.
19:12Now, we do hear a little bit of these guys' story,
19:15of how they both looked after Mark's wife during her terminal illness.
19:20It was so heartwarming, and it makes it all that much more sweeter to watch,
19:23like, their relationship grow and their interactions and things like that.
19:26What did we make of their progress in the first leg, Molly?
19:30Um, I feel like these two are slow burners, but I think what I love about their story is that,
19:39obviously, when things get tough, they know how to step up together, and I feel like that's,
19:44well, I'm hoping that's what we see.
19:46Would either of you ever do it with an in-law?
19:48Oh, be careful, Molls.
19:51Er...
19:53No, I'm joking.
19:54You could never do it with Deb.
19:55Sorry, my mum would drive you and say that, it couldn't happen.
19:58No, I have gone away with my sister-in-law, my brother's partner,
20:02but I feel like she'd blow the budget.
20:05It ruins Christmas as well, doesn't it?
20:06Yeah, it does.
20:08Remember when we lost Race Across the World?
20:10Yeah, great.
20:10Yeah.
20:12Yeah.
20:12Also, the turkey's dry.
20:14Yeah.
20:16Yeah.
20:19That's heavy.
20:20That was a little heavy.
20:22Well, I think it's time to talk about the route which was revealed in this first episode,
20:26and it is an epic one.
20:29The finish line.
20:32Hatgal.
20:33On the northern edge of Mongolia.
20:39To get there, teams will traverse more than 12,000 kilometres via seven checkpoints.
20:46At each stop, their next destination is revealed.
20:50That is crazy, it's so close.
20:52It looks beautiful, it looks unreal, but first, Alfie, give us the knowledge.
20:56Yeah, I mean, this is one of the most ambitious routes we've ever seen on Race Across the World.
21:01This will be an incredible journey from the temperate and familiar Mediterranean in Sicily,
21:06to the sparsely populated and far colder Mongolian plateau.
21:09The teams will be racing through many different cultures, climates and landscapes.
21:14How many languages do you think?
21:15Like four.
21:16Ten.
21:17Yeah, no chance.
21:18This is like the easy bit.
21:20Yeah.
21:21It took us like six weeks to learn Spanish.
21:23Quanta Cuesta, that's all I can say.
21:24Yeah, yeah.
21:25How much?
21:25Yeah.
21:27Local transport is going to get worse.
21:28These buses and these ferries that they're happy to take in Palermo.
21:31I mean, in Palermo, you've got everything.
21:33You know, you've got a plethora of options to get off the island.
21:35You've got taxis, you've got trams, you've got trains.
21:38Mongolia, there's one railway network.
21:40Wow.
21:41So, the level of transport is only going to get worse.
21:44So, I hope they're ready.
21:46Now, Alfie, we've already seen the benefits of the helpful stranger in this episode, right?
21:51We love the moment that the young lad was there and he was phoning around all the hotels in Albu
21:55Rebello to try and get a room for Mark and Margo.
21:58What a guy, yeah.
21:59And Mark didn't seem too bothered about it as well.
22:01They didn't seem to care.
22:02He didn't say...
22:03Very appreciative.
22:03He's poor for fours and his grazis are poor.
22:06Alfie, the language barriers are quite intimidating, right?
22:09Yeah.
22:09So, there's kind of a few things that you can do to kind of mitigate that.
22:13Obviously, the first thing is that if you aren't on Race Across the World, then you'll
22:16probably have your phone and Google Translate.
22:18It's probably the easiest way to do that if you find a helpful local.
22:20But things like hotel concierges, they kind of know the ins and outs of the local area,
22:26will very often speak English because they're used to tourism.
22:28So, kind of just going into a hotel and asking the reception desk if they've got any tips
22:31or if they can help you out, that's probably your safest bet in terms of where to go.
22:35Tourist information centres, always another safe bet as well, particularly in cities with
22:39lots of tourists.
22:40So, in this episode, we've already seen the pairs traveling to some incredible locations
22:43and landmarks, but even the most stunning of spots have their critics.
22:47So, I'm going to read out some genuine one-star reviews from famous landmarks,
22:51and you basically just have to guess what they're on about.
22:54Does that sound all right?
22:54Yeah.
22:55Okay, right.
22:56Here we go.
22:56Up first.
22:57It's Stones.
22:58Nothing special.
23:00Overrated.
23:01Oh!
23:02Is it in China?
23:03No.
23:04Okay.
23:05All right.
23:06Let me give you another clue.
23:07Let me give you another clue, right?
23:08So, doesn't light up, looks better in pics.
23:11You go with this, it's like a building.
23:12Yeah.
23:13Yeah.
23:13You're on the right lines.
23:14Ooh.
23:14Ooh, you actually are on the right lines there.
23:16What?
23:16I swear.
23:17It's a building.
23:18A building.
23:19Yeah.
23:19Brilliant.
23:20I ain't got a Scooby, bro.
23:20Just stones that don't light up.
23:22Yeah.
23:22Is it Stonehenge?
23:23That's what I thought.
23:24I thought it was Stonehenge, because Stonehenge doesn't light up.
23:26Like, it doesn't.
23:26Yeah.
23:26So you're going to lock in Stonehenge, yeah?
23:28How big was the queue?
23:31So you can judge it on.
23:32Yeah, yeah.
23:32Well, look, apparently if you were looking for a light-up disco, you might be disappointed,
23:36but with over 10 million visitors a year, it suggests it's still worth a visit.
23:40It's the Coliseum.
23:41Oh.
23:41You two are never going to get that.
23:42Sorry, these were the worst things you were upset.
23:44Oh, come on.
23:45I said, is it a building?
23:46You said the Coliseum is a building, is it?
23:48No.
23:49Well, it's just stones, apparently.
23:50Yeah, it is, though.
23:52It is.
23:53It is just stones.
23:54All right, here's the next one.
23:55Second plea, right?
23:56Right.
23:56It splashes and splashes.
23:58It spurtles and flows.
24:00It's a one-star review.
24:02Oh.
24:03Oh.
24:03Is it?
24:04It does sound like something from Lord of the Rings.
24:05Is it a waterfall?
24:06Is it a waterfall?
24:07Well, uh, mm.
24:09It's as romantic as my oldest pair of smelly socks, let down.
24:14Lovely.
24:14Is it in, um, Rome?
24:16I don't know what it's called, but it's a fountain.
24:18You don't know what it is?
24:19Ooh.
24:20OK, right.
24:20I'm going to lock that in.
24:21We're going to go to the fountain.
24:22It's the fountain that you're not allowed to sit on anymore.
24:24Yeah, she's bang on there.
24:26Is that bang on?
24:27But you don't know the name of it.
24:28Yeah, you're quizzing me, and I know you don't know either.
24:30I've even got the answers, and I'm going,
24:32you're not allowed to sit on it, swear.
24:33It begins with a T.
24:34There you go.
24:35Are you cheating?
24:36I'm not cheating.
24:37Molly, when have you ever been to the Trevi
24:38Fountain?
24:39I haven't.
24:40Way to give the answer away.
24:42People were playing at home, and you've just given it away.
24:44That is a review of the Trevi Fountain.
24:46I mean, him saying let down, as well,
24:47on the end of that one-star review,
24:48he definitely tried to propose to someone there, and it didn't go well.
24:51100%.
24:51I went way off though.
24:52You was nowhere near.
24:53I was nagging fools.
24:55Yeah, that's where I went first, to be fair.
24:57This is not the one.
24:58Right, OK, here's the final one, all right?
24:59Review number three.
25:01Seemed like an old crabby guy rushed his way through it.
25:04One-star.
25:04Is this a place?
25:06Yeah, it's a place.
25:07Where's a crabby guy?
25:08Crabby?
25:10No, I didn't write the review.
25:12What's a crabby guy?
25:13I don't know what, I'm aware of.
25:14That's a bit vague for me.
25:16OK, all right, no, this one will probably help you out.
25:19It's a neck sore should have nap mats to lay on for viewing.
25:23Is it the painting that's on the ceiling?
25:26Is it French?
25:26The painting on the ceiling, that's what we're locking in on it.
25:28Is it French?
25:29I can't remember what it's called, man.
25:31OK, right, you're locking that in?
25:32Yeah.
25:33The painting on the ceiling?
25:34Yeah, the painting on the ceiling.
25:34Nice.
25:35Yeah, it is the most fancy ceiling since Janan discovered Artex, all right?
25:39It's the Sistine Chapel.
25:40Sistine Chapel, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
25:42You know what's funny about that?
25:44When I was younger, I thought it was the Sixteen Chapel.
25:47Yeah.
25:47The Sixteen Chapel.
25:48Yeah, yeah, yeah, so I said it to somebody that was Italian and they lost it.
25:51They got me.
25:52In Italy?
25:53Yeah.
25:54Anyway, the moral of the game, trust your own eyes, not just a review.
25:57Now, let's return to this week's episode.
26:00There were some major decisions made in that first leg.
26:03Employment was found, hotel rooms were booked and money was spent.
26:06Buongiorno, can we get two tickets to Napoli, please?
26:11One hundred and eighty-five.
26:14So, sixty-two fifty each.
26:16Just figured it out and that's about four percent of our budget, I think, gone.
26:19It's a bit of a tough one to swallow.
26:22And how long is the boat?
26:23Twenty five hours.
26:24Thank you so much.
26:25Grazie.
26:25Grazie.
26:26I think 12 hours moving is really good progress.
26:29Now, another big decision, siblings Katie and Harrison, they've chosen to jump straight into work already.
26:35I mean, they had the fancy CAF outfits on as well, Alfie.
26:39Like, talk us through the choices that you made when you needed to work.
26:42Oh, they looked great, didn't they?
26:44They looked like proper kind of Italian.
26:45Yeah, that's that.
26:46I would have liked to have been the worst.
26:48Well, interestingly, Owen was kind of always in charge of the jobs on our race,
26:52which is why we ended up in a nightclub in Vietnam.
26:55Brilliant.
26:55Which was really good fun.
26:56That's it.
26:57Not a bad place to be.
26:58No, but I don't think he was very happy with me when I insisted that we booked a 3am bus.
27:03So we went straight from the job onto a bus because I was like,
27:07well, if we're going to do the nights working, well, then we're going to make the ground afterwards.
27:09And that's just that.
27:12Like a true winner.
27:13Yes.
27:16But I think working now is genius because as we've spoken about, the currency now is at its highest.
27:22So working now, you can get paid more, which means you can pocket more for later.
27:25When you're working kind of in the later countries and the money's less, it's not going to go as far.
27:30So working now is really important.
27:31Yeah.
27:32Now, let's talk a little bit about home comforts, right?
27:34Paul Harrison, all he wanted was a custard cream.
27:36I know.
27:36It's just a simple request.
27:38All he wanted on the race was a custard cream and he would have been happy.
27:41Kola, I heard that steak and pancakes are important for you on your holiday.
27:45Oh, yeah.
27:46What does that mean?
27:47Because basically, I have a ritual, because I'm very superstitious.
27:51So I believe that, you know, karma and bad luck, you know.
27:54And if I don't do certain things when I enter a country, then something bad will happen to me.
27:59Do you know what I mean?
28:00And I call it LaForge steak and pancakes on the race, so a lot of bad things happened to me.
28:05You know what I mean?
28:06Alfie, what was the home comfort that you missed so much on the race?
28:09Music, man.
28:10Like, kind of having that, I think we've just, we're so used to taking it for granted.
28:15Like, get on the train, you can play any song you want.
28:16I had this little iPod that I had to download my uncle's iTunes library from like 2008 onto.
28:24Brilliant.
28:24Wow, that's so far away.
28:25One classic choice.
28:27I was five.
28:28What the hell was going on?
28:30Well, I just had a grey hair pop out of his chin.
28:322008, oh man, that ancient, that time capsule.
28:35That was a decent era of music, I feel.
28:37I literally, I left school.
28:39That's okay with school in 2008.
28:40Decent era of music, unless you're my uncle.
28:42Yeah, fair.
28:43In which case, what I had to listen to was just virtually unbearable.
28:47Fine.
28:47So I think that was the one thing that I missed massively,
28:49especially on those long journeys, man.
28:50Like, not having the music is a killer.
28:53It's now time for something very exciting.
28:56Every leg of the race has options.
28:58Some are fast, but come at a cost.
29:00Some are cheap, but involve a bit more improvising.
29:02And sometimes the smartest move isn't the obvious one,
29:04which is why Alfie, our resident travel expert, is here with his geography teacher Blazer on.
29:09I don't know why it doesn't add to this at all.
29:12I disagree, I think it's great.
29:13One size fits all, that one.
29:15Right, you're going to reveal the very best way to travel through our first leg,
29:19all right, with the most unmissable detours along the way.
29:22So Alfie, you're taking us from Palermo to Foscado.
29:26Your race starts now.
29:27So, leg one is all about controlled temptation, and I would start in Naples.
29:32Now, yes, it's a bit punchy on prices we've seen, especially for day one,
29:36with ferries from Palermo coming in at around Β£40 per person.
29:39But you land in a transport gold mine.
29:41Now, I'm a huge football buff, and football is a way of life in this city,
29:45as we saw from the episode.
29:47But if history is your thing, then Castle Nuovo, finished in 1282,
29:51is your must-visit spot in the pizza capital.
29:54Now, here's my big tactical detour for the leg, Matera.
29:57You get a train to Salerno, then a four-hour bus across for roughly Β£14,
30:01and you'll arrive in one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.
30:06These sassy districts are carved straight into the rocks,
30:09with these homes and churches dating back thousands of years.
30:12It's probably why they called it a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but I don't know.
30:16But then it's all eyes on the checkpoint.
30:18Take a one-and-a-half-hour train to Bari, then take the overnight ferry to Patras.
30:22It's roughly β¬70 to β¬90, but you're saving a night's accommodation
30:26and covering some serious distance while you sleep.
30:28As we've spoken about, that's race gold.
30:31From there, it's a bit of Greek island hopping to Kefalonia.
30:34I believe you two would propose to each other somewhere along the route
30:36when it comes to beaches, but, you know, get your name in that book quickly, Harrison,
30:41and enjoy your checkpoint hotel.
30:42There we go. And we do enjoy a checkpoint hotel.
30:45Yeah, we do.
30:46That is life-saving when you're actually doing the race.
30:48All right, well, there you have it. Thank you very much, Alfie.
30:50Much easier, really, to work when you're not rushed, sweaty,
30:55and competing against eight other people.
30:56Slightly. That is fine.
30:58I am slightly space-constrained, though, in this place.
31:01It's a small blazer. It's a small blazer, guys.
31:02Right, now, before we go, this is something that I am very excited about.
31:06We have an exclusive sneak peek of next week's episode of Race Across the World.
31:09You're not going to see this anywhere else. Enjoy.
31:13Oh, sorry. Do you mind if I speak to you?
31:15You don't mind? We're trying to get to Istanbul tonight.
31:18We have no way of booking it, but we can pay for it in cash.
31:22Would you be able to give it a hand?
31:24Okay.
31:25Bus to Istanbul.
31:27If we don't get that bus, we then have to stay the night
31:31and get a bus tomorrow morning.
31:33Race-wise, this couldn't make or break us.
31:35It's processing payment.
31:37Wait for internet. There is no Wi-Fi.
31:40I feel sick.
31:41It's refreshing.
31:42Please, internet.
31:43Please, please, please, please, please, please.
31:46Should we refresh?
31:47Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just go again, yeah.
31:50Okay, so I think you've gone through.
31:52We don't have a booking confirmation.
31:53The money has gone through, so I owe you this.
31:57It's a lot of money and a limited budget.
32:00We have paid her.
32:02She easily disappeared into the night.
32:03So, until we actually physically see the ticket,
32:06we're just going to be a bit worried.
32:09Four percent of their total budget handed over.
32:12My ill heart is ticking a lot more than it should be at the moment.
32:15They wait to see if the gamble has paid off.
32:19He is going through it.
32:20He is going through it.
32:22You can hear it in his voice.
32:23That is a stressed man.
32:23Yeah, that is a stressed man.
32:25Week two. Week two, you're not stressed.
32:27That's got to happen.
32:28And you haven't seen the booking confirmation.
32:30That is...
32:30Oh, yeah, that's...
32:31That's scary, I feel.
32:33You could have just been handing over money for fun.
32:3590 quid is a lot of money as well.
32:37That's a lot.
32:37So, that's a big chunk of money to gamble.
32:39Especially that early.
32:40It's hard to give away that money at the beginning, isn't it?
32:43Yeah, exactly.
32:44Right, it's taking a hit.
32:45We're going to have to see how it pans out.
32:46That's next week's ep, which we are so, so excited for.

33:27to see which teams came second, third, fourth and the dreaded last place
33:32and whether Katie and Harrison have really pushed the boat out
33:35and spent β¬1.80 on some mayonnaise.
33:37Thank you for going on this detour with us.
33:39I'm Tyler West.
