There's been a drop in petrol prices this week but farmers, who are some of the biggest fuel users, are yet to see if it'll have any bearing on sky high prices of growing or transporting food. The onslaught of pressures has some wondering whether harvesting is even worthwhile.

00:06It's been hit hard by the meteoric rise in fuel prices.
00:10Diesel, in particular, is crucial for planting, harvesting and sending food to market.
00:16We're all a bit anxious and a bit nervous about what's going to come.
00:20The company is talking to major retailers,
00:23but with no room for negotiating on the wholesale market,
00:27freight could be the tipping point.
00:29It may get to that where we won't harvest broccoli or cauliflower.
00:32And the crops are looking magnificent at the moment

00:41The federal government has temporarily halved the fuel excise
00:45and slashed the heavy vehicle row user charge,
00:48but it's not clear how far that will go.
00:51This livestock transporter is moving up to 20,000 lamb a week to Victoria,
00:57burning through 25,000 litres of diesel.
