00:00What if the first thing you ever made was this? A squanchy. No experience, no complicated steps, just one simple
00:12process. This is all you need to start. Fabric, elastic, thread, scissors and safety pin.
00:34Hello everyone and welcome to this beginner sewing community. My name is Oliva and this is Threads in Progress.
00:43Today I am attempting to do my first project and I took a couple of lessons before this for me
00:54to be able to come up with the basic knowledge of this first project.
01:01Every project starts the same way, with something simple, a shape. We are going to make squanches and we have
01:10three different pieces here.
01:13But as a beginner, you can see I'm still struggling with cutting straight lines.
01:20I haven't been using this for so long so my hand kind like shake when I'm cutting fabric.
01:28This is a process. This is me learning in real progress.
01:33When we have a look at this first, I cut it and I pre-ironed it as you can see.
01:40This is 6 inches.
01:48Yeah, this is 6 inches. So I cut it on fold.
01:52It was 3 inches on fold.
01:55And when we measure from this side to this side, it is something like 37, if I'm not mistaken.
02:1636 right sides together.
02:19Fold the fabric with good sides facing each other and sew a straight line along the edge.
02:25This is called a straight stitch.
02:28The most basic stitch you will use in almost every project.
02:33Attach a shaft pin and pull the fabric through.
02:36This is the moment I realized it was actually working.
02:41Take your elastic and fit it through the tube.
02:44Make sure you hold the end, otherwise it will disappear inside.
02:48Once this is through, tie off, sew both elastics together.
02:56This is what gives the squanching its straight shape.
03:00It will carry on.
03:04And it will be filmed in my favorite place.
03:13The most basic stitch you do, tie up is only went away.
03:15You can spend a little bit of time on foot mat then, but in the long to the trip, I
03:15charge you.
03:15Then I'll take a little bit of time.
03:15Bye bye.
03:15Bye bye.
03:30the first mistake i did was cutting small elastics so i figured this out when i was about to close
03:39it and what i did on this second project i added elastic so i could realize i had cut small
03:48elastic
03:49for all my three pieces so i just decided to open this one and add more elastic to experiment and
03:57i
03:57see so as you can see this is far better from this this is kind of small and too stuffed
04:06so it needs
04:07more space this is the first so when i added more elastic this is a bit
04:16good so i'm going to close it and make use of it for my project so i had to join
04:25the elastic
04:26and i just joined it with a sewing machine so now i have a big elastic and these are mine
04:34and i went
04:34on with ironing my seams open and i had to cut off some excess swimming allowance because at this
04:40moment everything was not right i cut uneven seams i had to adjust them when i was sewing and i
04:49added
04:49up with a bit of more swimming allowance at some point so you're not just following steps anymore
04:59you're starting to understand what each part does and just like that you made your first squanchy
05:09it started as a flat piece of fabric and now it's something you can use this is how every skill
05:17starts one simple project one small win and then the other
05:26so don't give up if you don't get it right at the first time try again and again that's how
05:32you're
05:32going to learn it i decided to give it a hand stitch for a clear and smooth finish i tried
05:40to show invisible
05:41stitches it was not easy at the first at the beginning but as i went along it became easier and
05:48easier
05:49so i recommend hand sewing it's stressily living
