Join the TechRadar Podcast as they explore the "weird liminal space" of modern robotics. Will humanoid bots become common household helpers by 2026, or is the technology still years away from being practical? Hear the experts' take on the latest advancements.

00:00We're in this kind of weird liminal space, I feel, with robotics where no one can really decide what they
00:04should be.
00:05Are they humanoid bots like Lance was just demoing there for us?
00:09Or are they the sort of more consumer robots like robot vacuums or the as-of-yet unseen Samsung Bully
00:16that will someday release?
00:18Maybe, maybe not. What can we expect in 2026?
00:21Definitely the march, the steady march of humanoid robots will continue.
00:25We will see more eye-popping videos.
00:29The One X Neo Beta, which is a $20,000 humanoid robot, is supposed to show up in homes next
00:35spring.
00:36I still think that it's probably, that's ambitious, optimistic.
00:41If and when it does show up in the homes, people will be ready to throttle it because it'll be
00:46unloading the dishwasher like this.
00:49It'll like take 45 minutes.
00:51But I have seen some recent, there are actually a bunch of videos that dropped this week of robots running
00:57and boxing and beating the crud out of their own CEO.
01:01These are disturbing videos.
01:03They really aren't where we're going because a lot of this stuff is sort of canned functions that they can
01:08do.
01:08But it also breaks all the five rules of robotics, right?
01:12You can't harm humans.
01:13But it is going to be a very interesting space.
01:16And remember, the thing that is propelling all of this robotic development is AI.
01:21It is really supercharged their training in a way they could not do before.
01:26So they are learning skills much more quickly and getting much better at handling unforeseen circumstances.
01:32If anyone expects that they will have their Rosie the Robot in their home next year doing all the chores
01:38and they'll just leave them behind, they're going to be in for a rude awakening.
01:42Next year is not really going to be that year.
01:44But we will see a lot of really cool development.
01:46I've still got a quick question.
01:48Yeah.
01:48Sort of for Lewis, because you're sort of the entertainment streaming expert on the podcast today.
01:53Maybe I'm wrong, but aren't there a lot of movies where robots find people and doing that sort of thing
01:57where things go wrong?
01:58There's that one that comes to mind about, you know, a specific robot, time travels.
02:04There's a couple, actually.
02:05It's funny that, isn't it?
02:06I've heard of that.
02:07My favourite thing that I've seen recently is the fact that much like cats and dogs, robots cannot quite conceive
02:15of mirrors.
02:16And I saw a video of a robot just running headfirst into a mirror multiple times.
02:22It's either that it's like intruder alert or that it just thinks there's an infinite corridor or something that it's
02:28ahead.
