00:31Hello, everybody. It's Tuesday, the 31st of March.
00:34Welcome to Countdown.
00:35I'm sitting here with two wrong feet and ugly shoes
00:38and ready to guide you through 15 rounds of letters and numbers.
00:42The case for the defence, as always, comes from Susie Dent,
00:45joined all week by the brilliant Mike Bobbins.
00:49And we've heard her say this many times before.
00:51How about this for a number?
00:53Rachel Riley's here.
00:54And three great quotes from, I think...
00:56I'll go and say it.
00:58I think it's one of the greatest movies of all time.
01:00And certainly one of the most re-watchable movies of all time,
01:02which is 2000, Julia Roberts, I think, at her best,
01:07and Erin Brockovich.
01:08And, of course, the real-life story of Erin Brockovich,
01:11which, of course, we know we go to the small town of Hinkley
01:13and poison water in a class-action suit.
01:16Just in case anyone hasn't seen it, I don't want to spoil it any further.
01:19But I don't know where you rank it on your movie list.
01:21We're both big Julia Roberts fans.
01:24And even Steele Magnolia's Pretty Woman, I think it's her at her absolute best.
01:28I mean, I watched it at the time.
01:30It's a great movie, but I can't say I've revisited it.
01:32Yeah.
01:33Whereas you know full well that I've watched Pretty Woman back-to-back twice in a row.
01:37But I love those kind of legal dramas, and it's amazing, isn't it?
01:39Over the years, it's the same storyline, and it still seems to happen in various places in America.
01:45And it's that conspiracy and the big corporate.
01:47It just gets us, isn't it?
01:49And when you see it on a movie, gang, you see based on a true story,
01:53you take it with a pinch of salt.
01:55So after the movie was made, the real Erin Brockovich went to the screening
02:00or the first viewing of it, and, of course, they asked her the question,
02:04how accurate was it, actually?
02:05And she said about 98%.
02:08Now, I love that, and I think it makes the movie, Susie, so much more powerful.
02:13I agree, and I think Julia Roberts actually worked with her quite a lot,
02:16so she absolutely nailed it.
02:19I agree.
02:19It's an absolutely brilliant film.
02:20Well, listen, we're all very excited because it's a green day today.
02:23If you haven't been watching the last few episodes,
02:26David Bateman's been using this old-school four-coloured pen
02:29that we used to all have as kids, and we're on the last colour today.
02:33And, listen, how did we get there?
02:36Because you've had three really close contests.
02:39How are you feeling about the later rounds?
02:41Because I'm lost in admiration for how you hold it together.
02:44I'm just taking it one round at a time.
02:46Yes.
02:46That's it.
02:47That's all that's in my head.
02:48Do you look quite calm?
02:49Are you inside?
02:50Are you quite nervous when you're...
02:51Nervous, yeah.
02:52Yeah, really?
02:53Because when we go backstage after the episode,
02:56you're reliving every round, and you're like,
02:58I can't believe I didn't get that.
02:59But you should have such confidence, 98s and high 90s scores.
03:04It'd be good to get the first century today, wouldn't it?
03:06Yeah.
03:06Well, listen, there's a bit of a steward's inquiry
03:08when it comes to the challenger today.
03:11He's from Penarth in South Wales.
03:12Calm down, Bobbins.
03:14You don't know everyone in Wales.
03:15Well, actually, he does.
03:16His dad and I play golf at Glamoglansk Golf Club quite a lot.
03:20Spent many a Sunday afternoon regaling every putt and missed putt.
03:25And, yeah, very, very big character.
03:28Oh, I love it.
03:29My dad's like...
03:30Well, he's a lot like me, isn't he, Rhys?
03:31Yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:31You see where you get it from.
03:32Yeah, yeah.
03:34Annoying.
03:35Yeah, he's annoying.
03:36So, just a big hi to Bob Bubbins if he's watching.
03:38Yeah, I hope he's watching.
03:40It's quite nice.
03:40I just met Rhys and someone said that Rhys knows your dad.
03:43Yeah.
03:43This is very Welsh.
03:44Yeah.
03:45This is very Welsh.
03:46You did a great thing just before the titles that people do,
03:48is you went through everyone you know that's ill.
03:50Yeah.
03:51Yeah.
03:52Yeah, I won.
03:52I won 4-3.
03:55Excellent.
03:56Right, well, listen, I'm on your side, David.
03:58I'll keep an eye on this and make sure there's no skullduggery or tomfoolery.
04:01Rhys against David.
04:02Countdown to Tuesday afternoon.

10:48There is an eight we found.
10:50Piedmont.
10:51Talk to me about this, Susie.
10:52Yeah, so Piedmont is a region in north-western Italy.
10:56It's in the foothills of the Alps.
10:57Absolutely beautiful.
10:58And with a small P named after this,
11:01it's a gentle slope leading from the foot of the mountains to some flat land.
11:04Ah, Sabrina would have got that yesterday.
11:06She would, actually, that's true.
11:08All their hill climbing.

12:27I have not seen that one.
12:29And they are in the dictionary, David.
12:31Well done.
12:32Yes.
12:33APPLAUSE
12:34Any time you have Susie reaching for the keyboard,
12:37that's a good sign, David.
12:39Yeah.
12:40It sounds to me like you have another eight, though.
12:42We have three eights.
12:43Oh, come on.
12:44We have three eights.
12:45Carotene.
12:46Yes.
12:47Resonate.
12:48Yeah.
12:49And Ancestor.
12:50Loving your work with the eights.
12:51But let's get on to those numbers.
12:53What's Rhys going to do?
12:54We don't know yet what his style is, Rhys.
12:56Let's find out.
12:57One large and five small, please, Rachel.
12:59A classic, I would say.
13:00A very popular choice, sir.
13:02One large, five little.
13:03Let me show you the selection.
13:05They are two, two, four, five, seven.
13:10And the big one, 25.
13:12And the target, 295.
13:14Two, nine, five.
13:15Number's up.
13:15Unfriendly.ён
13:17from me. Five
13:18underneath. One.
13:30Two.
13:31One slash.
13:32One. Two.
13:32Two.
13:32One.
13:32One.
13:40One.
13:41One.
13:44Two.
13:44Three.
13:45Three.
13:47295 Rhys 295 and for you David 295 not written down so David you'll go first
13:53then 7 plus 5 is 12 yep times 25 300 minus 4 296 minus 2 over 2 2 over 2
14:03for
14:04another one and a 10 points Rhys 7 plus 4 is 11 yep plus the word 2 divided by 2
14:12was the one is 12 yeah you just yeah I just did it slightly differently times 12
14:16and then minus the 5 times the 25 for 300 minus the 5 yeah great work well
14:23done 10 points we have our daily chat with a dictionary corner guest and it
14:31changes every week some dictionary corner guests will be militant about what they
14:35want to talk about they'll have a plan for every word and Mike is the
14:39antithesis of that and when I'm doing radio especially during COVID and we
14:43were gonna have a couple of hours we were just shooting the breeze and talking
14:45Mike's the first person you book because you can throw anything at him so I'm
14:49gonna throw sport at you today yeah maybe later in the week we'll talk about the
14:53runaway success of the socially distant podcast that you do but I know you're
14:58just have really enjoyed this period of of Welsh football success after years in
15:04the wilderness and one particular trip with your son which is just beautiful yeah
15:08well it's the World Cup qualifiers and I was trying to get a ticket for the Wales
15:11Ukraine game couldn't get one anywhere this is to decide the big one to go to
15:15the World Cup for the first time you know since the 50s and then a friend of mine got
15:20in touch with me down and said I've got two tickets in the family enclosure so I took my
15:24son yeah loved it we stood right beyond the goal and I said if we score first half Ben we're
15:30right
15:30there so we scored first half right and then couldn't see on the TV record it couldn't see
15:35anywhere and then a friend of mine works in the press corps she sent me a photograph have you seen
15:38this photograph of you and your boy and then if you go it's like a Caravaggio painting go up from
15:43the ball and then my classic John Toshek 1970s Welsh shirt is me first face right there with my son
15:50going nuts next to me but he thinks that's Welsh football now he thinks that we just win
15:53things and go to major tournaments all the time and and he will remember that for the rest of his
15:58life
15:58forever so this is what I'm gonna put you in the spot take me back to your teenage years as
16:02a sports
16:02mad teenager just give me a story well yes at different times obviously in the 80s well my sort
16:09of when I was his age maybe a little bit older sort of 15 16 my PE teacher at the
16:15time it was
16:17summer term said you do put such at the rugby team you want to go to Wimbledon see the tennis
16:21I said oh
16:21fantastic so no forms to fill in no health and safety just pile us all into it into a slide
16:27indoor minibus so we drove to Wimbledon really hot day he parks up in Wimbledon the area I said give
16:34me give me a couple of minutes I'll be back shut the door left us all in there on our
16:38own 45 minutes
16:39maybe minimum and after 45 minutes he came back we were sweltering in the back of the bus and he
16:44just went
16:45sold out it just filed under like could never happen today just I think he's just going to turn up
16:54and
16:54get 16 tickets outside the court you know I mean it's like Newport County I know oh that is absolutely
17:02brilliant yeah one more little thing because what buying a ticket for Welsh football now as you say it's
17:07you know like loving the money used to be able to get them in the door that's what success brings
17:11and
17:11there's a wonderful moment as as Wales rose again under Gary Speed and that's a Daffod Ewan and an old
17:18folk song called Uma o Heed which is I'll put it up there with you'll never walk alone in sunshine
17:23in
17:24Leith and he's performed it live and it is as good a clip as you see if you haven't seen
17:29this look it up
17:30and you got to actually perform with him tell us about that well yeah I was doing a thing for
17:35S4C
17:35with Alice James you know yeah called yeah I thought about me trying to learn Welsh and on the last
17:41day of
17:41recording we turned up in a little theatre in crosshands which in West Wales I walk in there and
17:46then on the stage there's a guitar Daffod Ewan so I sang Uma o Heed with Daffod Ewan on stage
17:50oh
17:51unbelievable yeah very nice now you've opened the floodgates for singing so I'm going to give you a day's
17:56notice we are going to talk Elvis tomorrow wait for this wait for this you may have to perform so
18:02you can dream of tomorrow but for now Mike thank you 49 26 and we get more letters now from
18:12David
18:12Bitman could I have a vowel please can indeed I and the constant place X and the vowel place a
18:24and the
18:25constant place C and the constant place T and another constant place L and the vowel place you and another
18:39constant place F and another vowel place final O let's do it
19:20David just a five and Rhys a six a chance to close that gap it's a marathon not a sprint
19:27David
19:27float and for you Rhys oxtail well done yes there you go oxtail an important six points for Rhys it's
19:36game on what else did you find in the soup of those letters well it's tough because there's no
19:40either so we also had oxtail but I'm wondering if we can have foxtail you can have foxtail yes
19:46inspired by Rhys a common meadow grass soft sort of brush like flowering spikes well done Rhys you had
19:53that as well I did I was going to listen to how many he had and then right gamble whether
19:57yeah yeah if
19:58you just watch the odd episode of countdown you may not pick up on the nuance of that it's so
20:03so
20:03important if you pick the letters you declare first and that's very much part of the tactics of
20:07the game so you actually played it well six was the right choice get the points on the board but
20:12if you lose by one well we'll just remind you of the foxtail moment your letters Rhys can I have
20:18a
20:18consonant please Rachel thank you Rhys ah and a vowel a and a consonant please T and a vowel I
20:29and a consonant L
20:32and a vowel please a and a consonant G and another consonant please N and a vowel please and a
20:47final E
20:48good luck everybody
21:18and a vowel please just a six David eight look at that look at that race yeah retail and for
21:26you
21:27David integral integral very nice nice spot nice spot for integral did you have integral written down
21:34we didn't no we didn't yeah you had to look like you were caught stealing there so what else have
21:38you
21:38got two other eights gratin a gratin a sounds French but you know is it doubly it's my cheese yeah
21:47oh
21:47gratin so onion soup you have the kind of gratin a bit lovely or then alerting a bucket of eights
21:54but
21:54all we care about now is the numbers and David it's on you I may have two large and four
21:58small please

22:5825 times one of the 10s.
23:02250.
23:03Minus the other 10.
23:06240.
23:07Minus the 1.
23:08One away.
23:09Lovely.
23:10Same way, Rhys?
23:10Not quite.
23:1225 minus 1.
23:1424 times 10.
23:16240.
23:17And then the other 10 minus the 9 is 1.
23:19Take that one away.
23:212-3-9.
23:22Yep.
23:22It was, as you said, Rachel, fruity.
23:25Yes.
23:25So 2-3-8.
23:26I said fruity.
23:26Unfortunately, that fruit was a durian.
23:29This is banned from many areas because it's stinky.
23:31And that one was impossible.
23:32One away is the best you could have done.
23:33Well done, both of you.
23:37Lovely key tag, too.
23:38So this weeds ahoy, weeds ahoy.
23:40You spot Hank in the make-up department.
23:42You spot Hank in the make-up department.
23:59Hello again, the Hank who was in the make-up room was Hank Marvin.
24:03Of course, Hank Marvin in the shadows, which gets us to eye shadow as the answer.
24:08Right, let's get on the way again, Rhys, and you're going to pick these letters.
24:11Can I have a consonant, please, Rachel?
24:14Thank you, Rhys.
24:15T.
24:16And another.
24:18M.
24:19And a vowel, please.

24:38And another consonant, please.
24:41Lastly, T.
24:42All right, let's play.
25:14Rhys.
25:15Er, risky six.
25:17And David?
25:18A risky six.
25:19OK, let's see if it's the same, Rhys.
25:21Matts.
25:22Spell?
25:23M-A-T-T-E-S.
25:24And David?
25:25Totems.
25:26And totems, more than one totem pole.
25:28Yes, unusual, this.
25:30Had to do with a lot of digging in the dictionary,
25:32but a mat is a mask used to obscure part of an image in a film
25:36and allowing other images to be substituted.
25:39So you can put the S on that.
25:40Excellent.
25:41And totem's fine.
25:42Yes, absolutely fine.
25:43Stoat.
25:44Stoat is there, which is a five.
25:47Five.
25:47Yeah, we can actually do better than five, so well done.
25:50All right, 70 plus 45.
25:51Let's get more letters now from David.
25:54May I have a vowel, please, Rachel?
25:56Thank you, David.
25:57I.
25:57And another vowel, please.
26:00U.
26:01And a consonant, please.
26:03N.
26:04And a consonant, please.
26:06D.
26:07And a vowel, please.
26:09O.
26:10And a consonant, please.
26:12L.
26:14And a consonant, please.
26:16H.
26:17And a vowel, please.
26:20A.
26:22And another vowel, please.
26:24Lastly, E.
26:26Countdown.
26:58David Bateman?
26:59Six.
27:00Rhys Morgan?
27:01Yeah, six.
27:01What's the six, David?
27:03Nodule.
27:03And for you, Rhys?
27:05Handle.
27:06And handle.
27:07Very good indeed.
27:08Nodule and handle.
27:10Very nice.
27:10And sixes, and what else?
27:12Well, there is an eight, which I, first of all, jokingly wrote down head lion,
27:17as the chief lion, but there is a lion head.
27:19There is.
27:20And believe it or not, it's a goldfish.
27:22Ah!
27:22With a very large head.
27:23Beautiful.
27:24Beautiful.
27:2676.51.
27:27We have four more rounds to go.
27:29And if you can hold on a second, get Susie's email by gout.
27:33Well, most of us would be in bed on antibiotics and all sorts of painkillers.
27:36You've got this terrible dental condition.
27:38I am on the antibiotics.
27:39Yes, absolutely.
27:40Lots of painkillers.
27:41Yes, we have to keep telling her every day that she was here.
27:43But we're going to spur you the origins of words,
27:46because you just do that all on your own.
27:48And that is a lot to do with a mouth sitting out like this.
27:51Yes, just can't open it too widely.
27:53So, four rounds to go.
27:54You don't have to wait for them, Rhys.
27:55We'll get on with it.
27:56Consonant, please.
27:57Thank you, Rhys.
27:58S.
27:59And another, please.
28:01R.
28:02And a vowel.
28:04A.
28:05And another, please.
28:06E.
28:07And a consonant.
28:08B.

28:16E.
28:17And a consonant.
28:19R.
28:20And a consonant, please.
28:24Final L.
28:25And half a minute.
28:26.
28:57When, quickly enough, Rhys, how many?
28:59Seven.
28:59And for you, David?
29:01Seven.
29:01Seven, what's the word, Rhys?
29:03Repulse.
29:03And what about you?
29:05Same.
29:05Excellent.
29:06There you go.
29:06We're repulsed twice here.
29:08What about in Dictionary Corner?
29:10We've got two more, eight.
29:11Yeah.
29:11We've got pleasure.
29:13That's simple.
29:14Yeah.
29:14And a favourite word of mine, perlers.
29:16Perlers, which, do you know what, we had the other week as well,
29:19and we got into it, didn't we, about sort of the dictionary definition of it,
29:23because we think a great goal, don't we?
29:24Yeah.
29:25Yeah.
29:25A couple of perlers.
29:26Absolute perler.
29:26Yeah.
29:27A couple of perlers, those two.
29:28Ah, yeah.
29:29David and Rhys, a couple of perlers, and we're into the last letters with David.
29:33May I have a vowel, please, Rachel?
29:35You may.
29:36Thank you, David.
29:36A.
29:38And another vowel, please.
29:40I.
29:41And a third vowel, please.
29:43E.
29:44And a consonant, please.
29:46Y.
29:47And another consonant, please.
29:49G.
29:50And another consonant, please.
29:52N.
29:54And another consonant, please.
29:56S.
29:57And a vowel, please.
30:00A.
30:01And a final consonant, please.
30:03And a final D.
30:04Lost letters.
30:06Lost letters.
30:36David? Just six. And Rhys? Yeah, six. Off you go, David. Saying? And for you, Rhys? Exactly the same. There
30:45you go. Great minds and all that. And talking of great minds. We did find a seven. Yeah. Gainsay? Yes,
30:52to contradict or deny the fact. There you go. Excellent stuff. No Disney ending then for Rhys. That'll do for
30:59David. Weird not having you having a crucial countenundrum and a nail-biter.
31:03But listen, only because you've been brilliant. You're on 89 already. Rhys on a spectacular 64 already. But it's not
31:10going to get it done. So let's enjoy these last two rounds. What are you going to do with the
31:14numbers? Can I have four large and two small, please? You can indeed. Out with a bang. One of the
31:19best selections, if I do say so.
31:21Two little ones. They are five and six and often a challenge. 50, 25, 75, 100. And the target to
31:30reach? 847.
31:32847. 847. Number's up.
31:35847. Number's up.
32:05847. Rhys?
32:10848. 848. One away. David? 845. 845 is two away. Rhys, you are holding your forehead and all. We're willing
32:17you through this. Come on.
32:195 plus 6 is 11. Yep. Times 75. 825. Plus the 25. 850. And then 100 divided by 50. Is
32:30two. Is two. And take that away.
32:32And seven points. Well, Donnery, seven points. Gets you to 71. Was there another three possible there?
32:38There was, yeah, a couple of... A little re-jiggle of this. So 100 divided by 50 is two. Add
32:46it to the 75 for 77. And then 6 plus 5 is 11. And just times them together. 847.
32:53Brilliant. Thank you.
32:56So, here we go. Rhys, it'd be nice to go out with a big 81 score, wouldn't it? Which you
33:00can do with this countdown conundrum. And yet again, we see David flirting with the century, but not quite getting
33:06there.
33:06We're on 89 at the moment, as we reveal this Tuesday afternoon, Countdown Conundrum.
33:31Rhys. Outfoxing.
33:32You have done exactly that to David.
33:35Yes.
33:38There's something I love about that after, of course, Foxtailgate.
33:42Yeah.
33:42That you got outfoxing in the very last round.
33:46Oh, dear. Well, listen, what a delight to have you.
33:48Thank you for having me.
33:49You'll see Mike next Tuesday at the golf club, anyway.
33:51No doubt, yeah.
33:53And, hey, we really have another conundrum here.
33:56You've run out of ink.
33:57What are we going to do? You've used the four colours, David.
34:01Start again.
34:02Start again.
34:03Two fours make eight.
34:04I don't even need Rachel for that one, so perfect stuff.
34:07Halfway to a comment on Dr Champ, we'll see you tomorrow.
34:10Excellent stuff.
34:11Mike, Susie, wonderful.
34:13You did most of the talking.
34:14You did most of the pain.
34:15Great.
34:16Bye.
34:17Rachel, what a trooper she is.
34:18And that means we're going to have another Red Letter Day as well.
34:21Yes, lovely.
34:22Tomorrow, then, we will see you.
34:23Let's make it a date.
34:24Rachel, Susie and I will be waiting for you.
