00:01We did go through quite a few dogs.
00:03We found you a match.
00:07She certainly ticks the fun box.
00:10It isn't just one Chihuahua. It's a trio.
00:14Oh my God!
00:15She's five months old.
00:18It's a Jack Russell.
00:20His name is Mushy.
00:24In a quiet corner of the English countryside,
00:28there's a place for those looking for love.
00:31There is only one chance at life.
00:34And I'm missing the dog. Good girl.
00:36Here, a dedicated team match abandoned dogs.
00:39You've been through a rough time, haven't you?
00:41It's okay, buddy.
00:42With hopeful new owners.
00:45We can trot together. Let's trot.
00:47A lot of people come to us when they're at a crossroads.
00:50I lost five years of my memory
00:53and I don't think they will ever come back.
00:55And they're putting their trust in us.
01:01Last spring, we installed fixed rig cameras.
01:05Additional support staff.
01:07Do you have any golden retrievers?
01:09We have 20.
01:10And a secluded meeting pen.
01:12To see how lives could be changed forever.
01:16With the perfect match.
01:18Oh, my God!
01:21Oh!
01:21You've given him the zoomies.
01:23Some connections happen in a heartbeat.
01:27Hello, we're here.
01:29He's trying to beat you.
01:30You trying to...
01:32But for some, it can take time.
01:34Don't sleep.
01:36When people connect with a dog...
01:40It's not through looks or a type.
01:42It's through a feeling.
01:45That first time, the tip of the tail wags.
01:48You just get a little flutter of hope.
01:51I love them.
01:52You know they're a keeper.
01:54I love them.
01:56I love them.
01:58Get it.
02:00For some dogs, their relationship with the ball is sacred.
02:05Truly sacred.
02:06Yeah.
02:08Balls, balls, balls, balls.
02:11We're really bad at throwing.
02:14If it bounces, if they can destroy it, they absolutely love it.
02:21I think we'd get through thousands of balls in a year.
02:25Wow!
02:27They even sometimes play by themselves.
02:29Like, look what I got.
02:31Some prefer a football.
02:33I've not quite yet found a Ronaldo.
02:35Ready?
02:37But definitely some Beckhams in the making.
02:43Where am I aiming here?
02:45Just for my head.
02:46Are you ready?
02:46Yeah.
02:46In three, two, one, go!
02:48Like that.
02:49What?
02:50Yeah.
02:51That could have been a flute, that, couldn't it?
02:52Yeah.
02:53One, two, three, go!
02:54Whoa!
02:55Get in!
02:56Megs and all.
02:58Scouting for a football-crazy dog is 13-year-old Josh with his mum, Becky.
03:05I'd made a dog score a goal before.
03:07If you throw it up in line with the net, then they'll try and grab it,
03:10but instead they'll enter it in there.
03:12Yeah, they, like, nose-boop it in, don't they?
03:14What a goal.
03:17What football team do you support?
03:19Manchester City.
03:20So we need a blue dog?
03:21Yeah.
03:22I painted a dog blue when I was younger.
03:24Yeah, when he was a toddler.
03:26Literally two minutes went and put some washing up,
03:28bed came back down and he painted the dog blue.
03:30Cos he wanted a blue dog.
03:32With finger paints, yeah.
03:35I reckon we get you sat down and someone can come and have a chat with you.
03:37What do you think?
03:38Yes.
03:38Yeah, that sounds good.
03:39If you want to make yourself comfy on them two chores at the back of my ear.
03:43No worries.
03:48Hello, Wood Green, Tim speaking.
03:49How can we help you?
03:51Every year, Wood Green takes in over $600.
03:56Good lads.
03:57Each one looking for a forever home.
04:01The newest arrival is on his way.
04:05Being brought in by his owner.
04:08Okay, come on in.
04:09So, tell me who have we got here?
04:11This is Ozzy.
04:12He is eight months old.
04:14We've had him from eight weeks.
04:16We are in the process of moving internationally.
04:19We've weighed up the various different factors, if you like,
04:22with taking Ozzy with us.
04:24There's vaccinations, there's the quarantine, there's the flight,
04:28there's temperature, and I think that whole acclimatisation process
04:32will probably be a bit more brutal on him than him finding someone
04:37that can give him the undivided attention here
04:39whilst he's still at such a young age.
04:40We know that it's never easy, but it sounds like you've really weighed it up
04:43and you're doing what's best for Ozzy.
04:46It is very, very difficult, but there's no alternative for us.
04:49He needs someone that can just give him the love that we've given him
04:53and we will miss him.
04:59If I stay in here with Ozzy while you leave, if that's okay?
05:04Cheers, thank you very much.
05:05Take care.
05:05Bye-bye.
05:07It's okay, buddy.
05:09I know, it's okay.
05:11It's okay.
05:12It's okay, darling.
05:14You stay with me.
05:15Yeah?
05:16I look after you.
05:22Ozzy!
05:23Good boy!
05:25Coming into kennels, Ozzy seems quite worried.
05:27We can see that his tail is down.
05:30Well done!
05:31Well done!
05:34Good boy.
05:38It is a lot for a new dog coming into kennels, especially if they've not been in this sort of
05:42environment before, which Ozzy hasn't.
05:44You can see he's just a completely different dog, which is really sad to see.
05:48See, we'll get Ozzy settled in, get him something nice to eat, and then we will start his assessment so
05:55that we can get him to a new home as soon as possible.
05:58Good boy.
06:00Good boy.
06:00I'll see you later.
06:01Good lad.
06:03Good boy.
06:09So what breeds do you like?
06:12What's your favourite?
06:12I like boxers, rotties, labradors and long-legged staffies.
06:17Oh, okay.
06:18Lots of people don't understand dogs, and they'll see a big dog and they'll be scared of it or something,
06:22and that dog might just be like the cutest thing inside.
06:25You had a dog before?
06:27Yeah.
06:27Little Paterdale.
06:29Oh, okay.
06:30And we had it before I were born, didn't we?
06:32Yeah, you kind of grew up with it.
06:34What was the dog's name?
06:35Chunk.
06:36Chunk.
06:37That's a great name.
06:38Amazing.
06:39His full name was Chunky Monkey, but we weren't shouting that across the field.
06:47Mum, you're just meant to yell like that, and you zoomed in.
06:52Growing up with him, we're almost like brothers, growing up with a brother in a way.
06:56And I know it sounds stupid because he is a dog, but it was like a brother.
07:01Yeah, you were definitely a double act, weren't you?
07:03Yeah.
07:03You know if they were quiet, something's going on that I don't want to find.
07:09He just got old, and he rapidly deteriorated, and it was just kind of really to let him go.
07:16It was hard, wasn't it?
07:18She told me, and I remember just bursting out crying.
07:23Sadly, not the first time I'd had to have a hard conversation with him, so...
07:27Yeah.
07:29Other than dogs, what do you enjoy?
07:31Football.
07:32Football.
07:32I love football.
07:34Is there what else?
07:35Nothing else.
07:37Your life pretty much revolves around football, doesn't it?
07:40Football and dogs.
07:41Is that what you're looking for, a dog that you can play football with?
07:43Yep.
07:44Well, you've given us a lot to go on, so I think it's time for us to go and have
07:48a look.
07:50OK.
07:51Thanks very much.
07:51See you soon.
07:52See you soon.
07:56Josh and Becky absolutely love Staffies, Staffy tights, ball breeds.
08:01Ooh, we don't hear that every day.
08:02I know.
08:03Do we have many in at the moment?
08:04We have quite a few, like, Mastiffy, Staffy, ball breed crosses, don't we?
08:11What about Cookie?
08:15She loves to play and chase a ball.
08:17There's potential.
08:18Yeah.
08:19Someone else came to mind, Ocean.
08:22Only a baby, ten months old.
08:24He's very playful, so he ticks that bot.
08:28What about...
08:29Ruby.
08:32Ruby.
08:34Come.
08:34Come.
08:35Yeah!
08:36You're a gorgeous girl.
08:37Yes, you are.
08:38Oh, thank you.
08:39Oh, thank you.
08:42Ruby found herself here because, unfortunately, her owner was having to leave her for about 13 hours a day.
08:49You can tell Ruby's come from a really loving home.
08:51She is so well-rounded.
08:53She's really good with everyone she meets.
08:55She's so affectionate and loving.
08:57Ruby, you've got to sit.
08:59Yeah!
09:01Ruby's got a lot of energy.
09:03She just wants people to throw a tennis ball for her all day.
09:07I think Staffy's in particular are really good family dogs because they're so loyal to people.
09:11They're really good with kids.
09:12Almost like a sibling to children.
09:14Someone who's there for you.
09:15A shoulder to cry on when you need it.
09:17I just hope that when Ruby enters the pen that she does go over and she shows her affectionate side
09:22and she doesn't get too sad that I'm leaving her for a little bit.
09:26Because sometimes she can do that, can't you, darling?
09:31We have found you a dog.
09:33Oh!
09:33The dog's name is Ruby.
09:36Ruby?
09:36She loves playing with toys.
09:38She loves people.
09:40She's really fun and playful.
09:42And she is a stuffy cross.
09:44Oh!
09:45And she's a long-legged stuffy cross.
09:47How old is she?
09:48Yeah.
09:48She's two years old.
09:50Oh!
09:51I think she's got great potential for football.
09:54Yeah.
09:54Sounds like what we need, doesn't it?
09:56Yep.
09:56I'm just excited to meet, I know.
09:58Ready?
09:59Yeah.
10:00Let's do it.
10:01Yes.
10:02Oh, my God, it's a Staffy.
10:04It's a Staffy.
10:06It's just me and Josh at home and it's very quiet, just us two.
10:11Josh lost his dad at seven years old quite suddenly and unexpectedly.
10:20Josh watched him walk on an ambulance and he never came home, sadly.
10:26And it turned out that his aorta had ruptured and tore through his heart.
10:33This is cute.
10:34Yeah, it is cute.
10:36I struggled a lot with anger when my dad died and I felt very sad all the time and I
10:42was miserable.
10:45I felt like the world was just against me and that no-one was on my side other than me
10:51and my mum.
10:52My dad had gone and the world had took that away from me.
10:57Chunk was Glyn's dog.
11:01When we lost Chunk, it was like grieving Glyn all over again because that little piece
11:07had gone.
11:10It was just hard.
11:12It was hard.
11:17We've waited too long really, haven't we?
11:20Yeah.
11:24Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby.
11:25Ruby.
11:25Right.
11:26Let's not, no!
11:28No!
11:29Ruby, you're gonna be good!
11:31Are you gonna be good?
11:32Yeah.
11:33To see Josh with a dog again would mean an awful lot to me.
11:41Come on in.
11:42Ready.
11:43And I think it will bring back that missing piece again for him.
11:51Oh my gosh, he is cute.
12:04When it comes to choosing the perfect match, dog lover Carina is relying on an honest second opinion.
12:13If Carina was a breed, she would be a poodle without a doubt.
12:17Sort of well-groomed, little poodly person you are.
12:21I don't know what you're going to say about me.
12:23A terrier or a Jack Russell. It's the yapping.
12:29Oh, hello. Hello. Hi, Leisha.
12:32Welcome to Woodgree, sisters.
12:36This is my mum, Doris, and we're from Nottingham.
12:40And Carina is 13.
12:43Don't do that. Sorry.
12:45She asked. She didn't ask for the age.
12:51So who's the dog going to be for?
12:53It's going to be for myself.
12:54Is this your first dog?
12:55It's my first dog. First-time dog owner.
12:59And Doris has got some experience of being a doggy grandma.
13:02She's going to help me.
13:03Yes. She's going to help me out.
13:04I'm a pick-up-with-a-bag person.
13:07I turn the bag inside out and I put it on my hand
13:11and I try to get every little bit
13:12and then I carry it along to the bin
13:15and I'm swinging, thinking,
13:16Anna, you know, look at me.
13:18I picked up the dog's boob.
13:19I think people know how to pick up the dog's boob.
13:21Some people use a scoop and I don't.
13:23Clearly, you know, there's a very experienced dog owner here.
13:28He's got all the tips for us.
13:30Do you feel like it's going to be a bit of a spoiled dog, though?
13:33I'll answer that for you.
13:34Yes.
13:35Yes.
13:37Right, well, listen, shall we get you sat down?
13:38Yes.
13:39And someone will be done shortly.
13:40Thanks so much.
13:43Hello.
13:45I'll leave you to it. I'll be back soon.
13:46Thanks very much.
13:48Go and have fun, Ruby.
13:50I'll leave you a snack.
13:51Come on in.
13:53Oh, bless her.
13:55She is really, really beautiful.
13:58Ruby!
14:00Josh is sold already, isn't he?
14:02Yeah.
14:02This is the dog for me.
14:04Leggy Staffy Cross.
14:07Just give her a minute.
14:10It's in strange.
14:13Oh, she's a bit stressed now.
14:14Her hand is left, isn't she?
14:17That's the thing about Staffies.
14:18They're such people dogs.
14:19They really attach themselves to their main person, don't they?
14:23Yeah.
14:26Ruby!
14:31She's cute, though, isn't she?
14:33Yeah.
14:33She's beautiful.
14:36She is still quite stressed, isn't she?
14:39Looking for the escape route.
14:44Come on, Ruby.
14:47I don't know if Mum's thinking, maybe, is this the right match for them?
14:53She just needs time.
14:57I feel like we need to do a little bit convincing Mum, don't we?
15:02We're strangers to us.
15:04We are.
15:07Yeah, no new place.
15:08New people.
15:10Oh, wise beyond his years.
15:14Children can see what she's going to be like in the home, whereas adults often can't get past what they
15:20see in front of them.
15:24Ruby, what's in here?
15:26Eh?
15:28I think she'll be a bit too stressed at her place too much, but...
15:32What's in here?
15:33Do you like anything?
15:35She's going to go, yes, please, Josh.
15:38What about this?
15:39Is that good?
15:41Yeah.
15:41Oh, yeah.
15:41Look at that.
15:43What is it, Ruby?
15:46What is it?
15:48Oh!
15:49Oh, you told me!
15:51You told me!
15:52That's the key.
15:53This is better.
15:55This is what Mum wanted to see as well, I think.
15:58What is it?
15:59Go on.
16:00Go on.
16:01Go on.
16:02Go on.
16:03That's it.
16:06So, basically, you keep moving and she's happy.
16:10Josh, he understands real life.
16:13I think he's had to understand real life due to circumstance.
16:18Oh!
16:19Go get it, then.
16:20Go get it.
16:21I don't want...
16:21I can't say enough how proud I am of him.
16:24She likes Tom, doesn't she?
16:26She does.
16:27I think from where he's come and everything he's gone through
16:29and to where he is and how well he's doing,
16:32he's absolutely smashing life.
16:35What are you doing?
16:36What do you feel?
16:37Slabberchops.
16:38Oh, she's going home for a cuddle.
16:40Oh, that's lovely.
16:42Really sweet.
16:42And she's going to buy a chef though, as well.
16:45She just wants a bit of a cuddle, doesn't she?
16:48Well done, Ruby.
16:50That's good.
16:50That's good.
16:50Oh, a little superstar.
16:52Good girl.
16:54You enjoying that?
16:55I like it.
16:57She's stunning.
17:01I mean, to me, she was just perfect.
17:04Just a beautiful dog, wasn't she?
17:07No pressure, then.
17:09Really, really...
17:09Oh, that's it, Josh.
17:12Oh!
17:13Go on, Mum, get in.
17:14Get in.
17:15Ruby!
17:16I want to take her and play a lot of football, obviously.
17:19Turn her into the best keeper in the world.
17:24You!
17:25Why are you so beautiful?
17:32So, why have you decided that now's the time for a dog?
17:35So, I'm working from home a lot more.
17:37Okay.
17:37So, now just feels like the right time, lifestyle-wise.
17:41You talk me through a typical day.
17:42What is it like for you?
17:43The laptop's open and it's ping, ping, ping, ping, ping, ping.
17:46So, that's from about 8am, bang, straight into it all.
17:49So, it'll be nice to have, you know, a dog there,
17:53because I do live on my own at the moment,
17:56for just, you know, in my lunch break
17:58or if it's been a particularly heavy meeting.
18:00Nice little walk in between.
18:02Yeah, absolutely.
18:03And what sort of work do you do?
18:04I manage a children's mental health service
18:07with a local charity.
18:07A lot of responsibility.
18:09Yeah.
18:09Serious job.
18:10It is.
18:11Yeah.
18:13I'm really happy with where I am
18:14and what I've achieved.
18:16Because in my early childhood,
18:20I was written off when it came to academics.
18:23I wasn't considered to be particularly intelligent
18:26or really had anything to offer academically
18:29and that really did impact my confidence.
18:31But I really just decided that
18:35that was not going to form my identity at all
18:37and I've just taken it further and further
18:39and nothing can stop me now.
18:41Have you given any consideration to, you know,
18:44have you come looking for something like a Great Dane or...?
18:48I am definitely looking on the petite side.
18:51Petite?
18:51I like that word.
18:53OK, then.
18:54We will see you in a moment.
18:55We will just go and see what we can find.
18:56All right, then.
18:58There.
19:01I think Ozzy's been finding kennels quite hard.
19:05He loves to be with people
19:06and isn't used to spending such a long amount of time on his own.
19:11So, I'm going to get Ozzy out today,
19:14get his brain engaged more
19:16and try and get his spark back.
19:18Yay!
19:20Clever boy!
19:22We need to make sure that every dog in our care
19:25is as happy as possible.
19:26Yeah, give me!
19:27On this one!
19:29Pedals aren't an ideal place for any dog
19:32so we need to work out how to reduce the stress for each dog.
19:36Oh, yeah, that's nice.
19:38You like a dog?
19:40Oh!
19:42Oh!
19:42For some, it's a spa day.
19:47For others, it could be a play date with a friend.
19:51Come on, mom!
19:52And then there are those that just want to hit the gym.
19:54Yay!
19:55Well done!
19:59Good girl!
20:00We all need to let our hair down sometimes.
20:06Ozzy, find it.
20:08Well done!
20:10You can really see how pleased he is.
20:12He's sort of trotting around like,
20:14look at me, look how well I did.
20:17It's so lovely to see him so happy.
20:19Ozzy, come here!
20:21Yay!
20:25We've found one.
20:27Her name is Honey.
20:29Oh!
20:30Which describes her colour.
20:32She's come to us as a stray.
20:35So we don't know a lot about her.
20:39But she is, we believe, a cavapoo.
20:42So she's a cavalier crossed with a poodle.
20:45She's around two.
20:47Wow!
20:47Two is a good age.
20:48The only real issue that we've found with her
20:51is when she's on your lap,
20:53she will absolutely love you.
20:55However, if somebody else were to come over
20:57and sit next to you,
20:59you know, there's growling and a snap to say,
21:01stay away.
21:03So she's going to need to learn,
21:05I am not something to guard.
21:07And you need to take it slow and steady.
21:09That's not a worrying behaviour for me, actually.
21:11I think Honey's going to be a Honey.
21:14Honey, my name.
21:15Honey, honey.
21:15Yeah, sweetest little Honey.
21:17Well, this sounds like it could be a good thing.
21:18Well, let's see then.
21:19Yes, please.
21:21OK, let's go do it.
21:22Come on, let's do it.
21:23Woo-hoo!
21:26Honey!
21:28Good girl.
21:29This is Honey.
21:30She has got her independent side,
21:32which makes her quite a cheeky, sassy girl.
21:36There were quite a few challenges
21:38when Honey first arrived to us.
21:40She was very worried.
21:42But when she finally got to a point
21:44where she would jump up like a kangaroo to see you,
21:47we knew that she was a wonderful little lady.
21:51Hi.
21:54Get it.
21:55I love Honey because she's her own woman.
21:59She's a very intelligent little lady.
22:01And she loves to do tricks.
22:04Good girl.
22:05Part of me is a bit worried
22:06that she will struggle to find an understanding owner
22:09just because she is so nervous around new people.
22:12And she might not necessarily show her fun,
22:15sassy, affectionate side.
22:17So it could take her a little while to find the right home.
22:23She sounds great, doesn't she?
22:25I know.
22:27I am so, so proud of what Carina has achieved.
22:33Let's go.
22:34Because she had a hard time just growing up.
22:38Oh, look, it's so cute.
22:42Carina's dad was in the Air Force
22:44and we were living in Berlin
22:47and she went to a school where she was the only black girl.
22:53I was explaining to my mum that I was not stimulated at school,
22:58I was bored, the work was easy, it was repetitive.
23:01And it turned out that I was being offered special educational needs support.
23:09It was assumed that because I was black, essentially,
23:13that I was most likely not of, you know, a good academic level.
23:19It's just under here then.
23:21There were no assessments, there was nothing wrong with my academic abilities at all.
23:27I didn't feel valued, I didn't feel that I was good enough.
23:31It very much felt like I was written off from the start.
23:36But it really has driven me to almost try to prove those teachers and those schools wrong.
23:42I've completed a number of degrees and qualifications now
23:46and I'm really, really fortunate that on my own I've been able to create
23:51a really great life that I'm really happy and proud of.
23:55Are you looking forward to it?
23:57Are you?
23:59Yeah.
24:00Get ready.
24:05But, yeah, my work-life balance doesn't exist.
24:11Oh, he's so exciting!
24:13I'm hoping a dog will maybe help me change that
24:17and I really want a dog for that companionship.
24:21Come on in.
24:23Oh, here we go.
24:28Hello!
24:36Hi, I'm going.
24:37This is Honey.
24:38She's a very sweet little lady.
24:40She knows lots of tricks.
24:42Don't you?
24:44I'll let her go and then I'll see how you get on.
24:47Hello.
24:49She's so cute.
24:52You stay there.
24:57Honey?
24:59Hello, sweetheart.
25:00Hello.
25:01Can you send us?
25:02Aw.
25:03Oh, gosh, she went over and then she just leapt away, didn't she?
25:07She's a nice size, though, isn't she?
25:09She is a little darling.
25:12Honey?
25:17Go and say hello, honey.
25:20She's not looking nervous and she's engaging with the environment.
25:24Yeah.
25:24She's just not quite engaging with Carina and Doris yet.
25:28No.
25:31We know that some of the dogs are going to have had adverse life experiences
25:38and that the dolly meat may not turn out like this whole fairytale experience,
25:44but we've made sure that we are just really realistic.
25:48So she wants to play, get something out in the box.
25:51You've spotted it, hasn't you, too?
25:52I know.
25:53She wants to see what's in the box.
25:56Oh, what do you like?
25:59It's slow, steady tail wag there.
26:01That's nice.
26:02Would you like the ball?
26:04Can you smell?
26:06She's something you think.
26:07I can't do it.
26:08That's a good girl.
26:11You want to say anything at the ball?
26:14No, you want some girls?
26:15We're going in for a stroke.
26:18She's completely stiffened up there.
26:21Yeah, look at the tail position, high, ears back.
26:24You can see she's eyeballing her.
26:29Sweet girl.
26:30It may just be a bit too soon.
26:33Yeah, that's making me uncomfortable.
26:37Oh, she's growling.
26:39She's never looking at me.
26:40She's listened to what we said.
26:42Yeah.
26:43She might guard, so she's given space.
26:46But I'm aware that Karina and Doris' smiles aren't as beaming as they were.
26:51No.
27:03What are your favourite dogs?
27:05I don't know.
27:07Any kind of dog.
27:08Any kind of dog.
27:10With mum and dad in tow, animal-obsessed Aurora is keeping all of her options open.
27:17What's your favourite animal that you love the most in the world?
27:20A dog.
27:23And I like snakes.
27:26You've had a snake in one of your parties.
27:29Yeah, I had it around my shoulders.
27:32It was really creepy.
27:36Oh, look, a dog, a cat, and a mouse.
27:39Yeah.
27:40Welcome to Wood Green.
27:41Hi.
27:42How are we doing?
27:43Good, thank you.
27:44I'm Alicia.
27:45What's your name?
27:46Aurora.
27:47Aurora.
27:48What a beautiful name.
27:49And how old are you?
27:51Six.
27:51And how old are these two?
27:53Uh, 60.
27:5760?
27:57Yeah!
27:58Oh, wow, they're a bit old, aren't they?
28:00So how much do we love dogs?
28:03A lot.
28:04A lot?
28:05They've always been asking for one.
28:06For ages.
28:07So you've been waiting a long time for a dog, eh?
28:09Yeah.
28:10Have you?
28:10Yeah.
28:11Who's going to do the poo picking up?
28:13Yeah.
28:14Aurora's going to help.
28:17Have you discussed who's going to be doing all the different jobs with this dog?
28:21No.
28:21Who's going to be...
28:23We have discussed who's going to do jobs, because we've said you need to do some of
28:27these jobs, don't you?
28:28Clean up after it, and wipe his feet, and it's been in the garden.
28:33You clean up after it, and you wipe his feet.
28:36Okay.
28:38She's not shy, is she?
28:40Right, well, listen, shall we get you sat down?
28:43Yeah?
28:44Brilliant.
28:44Right.
28:44If yous want to grab yourselves a seat at the back on the chairs, and someone should be
28:48going to chat with yourself.
28:50Okay, thank you.
28:51You all right, monkey?
28:52Yeah.
28:52Ooh.
28:53Who's going to make the final decision about this dog?
28:57Uh...
29:00Me.
29:04Honey, come on.
29:07Honey, honey, sweetie.
29:13Yeah, the toys aren't going to do it.
29:17Oh, honey's looking for treats.
29:19What have I got?
29:21What have I got?
29:21This smells nice.
29:23Johnson.
29:24Okay.
29:25Hey.
29:26So, Carina's found the special treats now.
29:30Chopped-up hot dog sausages.
29:33Honey, up!
29:34Good job.
29:38Slowly, slowly.
29:42A little gentle mouth as well, hasn't she?
29:45She's so cute.
29:46Mm.
29:46I'll hand for me.
29:48I do love a poodle.
29:50I do love a poodle.
29:51Anything, really, that's mixed with some kind of poodle.
29:53I just love how intelligent they are, very easy to train.
30:00What really drives me is really being able to understand the dog itself and how you interact.
30:07I think she's going to eat the whole ten of them.
30:09Yes, she might do.
30:13I know.
30:14You know what we've got here, don't you?
30:16I think since she started giving her the treats, it's made a big difference, don't you think?
30:20Yeah.
30:20Here we go.
30:21Do you know, Paul?
30:22Well done.
30:23What other tricks do you know?
30:26Do you know?
30:27Lay down.
30:28So cute.
30:29Lay down.
30:30Lay down.
30:31Good job.
30:32There you go.
30:34You're a very good girl, aren't you?
30:37Looks like they're putting her through her paces.
30:40Let's go.
30:41It's very energetic.
30:43I love the leaps.
30:45Let's go.
30:46Oh, you're a good jumper, aren't you?
30:49Oh, she does dances.
30:51Oh, she's so cute.
30:53Roll.
30:53Roll over.
30:55Good job.
30:57Oh, well done.
30:58Aw, look at this.
31:01We've realised that honey will do anything for a bit of food.
31:04Sauce and cheese.
31:05Yes.
31:06Good girl.
31:08Her personality came out.
31:10First of all, I thought of cheerleading.
31:13Ballerina, she was just showing off, wasn't she?
31:15Look what I can do.
31:16Lay down.
31:17Lay down.
31:18Roll.
31:19Yay!
31:20Yay!
31:20Oh, I'm growing poorly.
31:23Good girl.
31:24Have another pour?
31:25Mm-hmm.
31:26Oh, my goodness me.
31:27Honey, honestly.
31:29Full marks here.
31:31Hey?
31:33Oh, who is this?
31:34Hello.
31:36Hey, hi.
31:37How are you?
31:39Jumping.
31:40Oh, look at you.
31:41Oh, you've got the zoomies.
31:43Oh, you're excited.
31:45Hello.
31:47Having spent a little bit more time with her and seeing her around other people that she
31:51is familiar with.
31:52She is very tactile.
31:53She is very affectionate.
31:54Come on, sweetheart.
31:56Good girl.
31:57I honestly believe that honey smiles.
32:00Mm-hmm.
32:00Despite whether she has been abandoned or strayed, she still has a zest for life.
32:05She's a lovely little dog.
32:11Hello.
32:12Hi.
32:13Hi.
32:14How are you?
32:15Good, thank you.
32:16My name's Dan.
32:17I'm Helen.
32:17Hi.
32:18And what about your two doggies here?
32:20What are they called?
32:20Frank and Y.
32:23I don't think I've ever heard a doggy that's been called Y before.
32:26So, what kinds of breeds are Frank and Y?
32:30Black Labrador and a white cockapoo.
32:33Have you got any other pets?
32:35A tortoise called Sam and some fish.
32:40Is Sam well behaved?
32:41Yeah.
32:42Yeah?
32:43Did you try and train her once?
32:44Yeah.
32:45And I tried to race with her, but...
32:48Oh, I always win.
32:51Taught her how to stay, didn't you?
32:53Yeah.
32:54Good at that.
32:55Yeah.
32:55How did you teach her how to stay?
32:57Oh, well, she just does it randomly.
33:00Yeah.
33:03Aurora is very full of energy, very lively.
33:08Well, until you want her to do something.
33:10Yeah.
33:11How about we go do this? No thanks.
33:13And then, yeah.
33:13Knows her own mind.
33:15Yeah.
33:16Very loud.
33:17She even talks in her sleep.
33:19Erm, so she literally does not shut up.
33:23How do you think a dog will benefit Aurora?
33:26Well, in the school holidays, in the summer,
33:29after a few weeks of being with me and her dad,
33:32she usually announces that we're so boring.
33:36So, it'd be nice to have a dog so that she's got some company.
33:40Do you find it quite difficult being on your own without a brother or sister to play with?
33:46Yeah.
33:46Are we looking for a friend?
33:48Yeah.
33:48Yeah?
33:49Like a big friend?
33:50A small friend?
33:52A medium friend.
33:53A medium friend.
33:55Is that what you guys are thinking as well?
33:57Yeah, I think so, yeah.
33:57And also one that's good with children, or would be good for Aurora.
34:02Like, you were playing with a cockapoo this weekend, weren't you?
34:04Yeah.
34:04What sort of age range are you looking at?
34:06I think based on what Aurora wants, a sort of younger, younger dog.
34:11OK.
34:11We'll take away all this information.
34:13We'll go and have a look through the dogs and come back.
34:15And we will see you soon.
34:16Bye, Frank.
34:17Bye.
34:18See you in a minute.
34:18Thanks, guys.
34:19Bye.
34:20I want to say hi to the lady.
34:23You want to say hi to the lady?
34:25Come on.
34:29Hello.
34:30Ready?
34:31There we go.
34:33Look at that.
34:34Nice.
34:34Hi.
34:37What kind of dog do you want?
34:40Do you have any golden retrievers?
34:42Yeah.
34:43How many do you have?
34:44Because I think I could take more than one.
34:47We have 20.
34:48You've got 20 golden retrievers?
34:50Yeah.
34:52She is desperate for a best friend.
34:55Because obviously finding a dog that's good with young children and other animals,
35:00the one that came to mind immediately was Queen.
35:05Queen.
35:07She's so sweet with people.
35:08She's such a good girl.
35:09What about Ozzy?
35:11Oh, the youngster.
35:13Oh, Ozzy.
35:14He's only eight months old.
35:16Yeah.
35:17He's not baby, bitey, puppy, not house trained stage, is he?
35:24He'd previously lived with children and was very playful with them.
35:27I think that's a good shout.
35:31Hi again.
35:32Hello.
35:32Hello again.
35:33Sorry to keep you waiting.
35:35We had a lot to consider.
35:37We have come up with one dog.
35:39He's a cockapoo.
35:40Woo!
35:41And he's eight months old.
35:43He came to us through no fault of his own.
35:46His owners were emigrating.
35:48He's a lovely, lovely boy.
35:50Really likes children.
35:51Mm-hm.
35:52I mean, he is an eight-month-old dog.
35:54So there will be some challenges.
35:56He's a cheeky little boy at times.
35:58I think it sounds perfect for Aurora.
36:00Because Aurora's like the human version of a cockapoo.
36:02Yeah.
36:03Would you like to go and meet Ozzy?
36:05Yeah.
36:05Yeah?
36:06Mm-hm.
36:06All right then.
36:07Let's have a wander, shall we?
36:09Let's go.
36:10Follow me.
36:13Woo!
36:15Is it nice, Monkey?
36:16Are you excited?
36:18Let's meet Ozzy.
36:22Aurora, I think, is becoming more aware that some of her friends at school have brothers and sisters.
36:30Oh, look, Monkey.
36:31You ready?
36:32It's not fancy.
36:33Go on.
36:36Being told that you're lonely by your child is not always the happiest thing in the world.
36:41Right, shall we sit on the bench?
36:42Are we ready?
36:43Where do you want to sit?
36:44That side or this side?
36:47Shady Park.
36:48Shady Park.
36:49OK.
36:50It would make us very happy to see Aurora with whatever dog that we get, just to interact with her
36:56and,
36:56you know, be that kind of, that sibling that she should have but doesn't have.
37:02And then she won't say she's lonely, hopefully, quite so much.
37:08Come on, mate.
37:08Yes, mate.
37:09Whoa, buzzing.
37:10Let's go.
37:10Come on.
37:11I think they're coming.
37:14I hope I'm right.
37:18There we go.
37:19Full spin head.
37:21Oh, there he is.
37:23Woo!
37:25Oh, he's here.
37:29Hello.
37:30Hi, Z.
37:31Good.
37:32Hello.
37:33Hi.
37:33Hey, I'm Chris.
37:35This is a very handsome Aussie.
37:38So I'll bring him over.
37:39I'll let him say a little hello.
37:40Hi.
37:41Hi.
37:42Can you say hi?
37:43Sit.
37:43Does he not do sits?
37:44He doesn't do it on cue yet.
37:46Oh, she's going to be frightened of him.
37:48Come and say hi.
37:50Hi.
37:51Hi.
37:52Hi.
37:53Hi.
37:54So he's very into everything.
37:55He is a social butterfly.
37:56Wow.
37:57Wow.
37:58She's quite worried by him, isn't she?
38:02No, no.
38:02Don't run away from him.
38:03He's fine.
38:04He's just got a wet mouth.
38:06Let's just let him...
38:07Explore.
38:08Explore.
38:09Explore.
38:13Good boy.
38:16I think it's that fear with children that they're going to jump up into their face.
38:20It's really scary.
38:24Uh, no.
38:27Calm down.
38:28Is mum worried, do you think?
38:32Aussie is quite an energetic young dog.
38:36You're going to straight here, monkey.
38:38I don't know.
38:38It's all right.
38:39And there's a lot to think about.
38:45Aussie.
38:46Good boy.
38:46Good boy.
38:48Come over here.
38:49Let's say hi to Aurora.
38:50Hello.
38:52OK.
38:54Do you want to straight here, monkey?
38:55There you go.
38:56There you go, monkey.
38:57It's OK.
38:58It's not going to hurt you.
38:59I thought she'd be all over the dog, and I'm surprised she's so nervous.
39:07Can you get some treats?
39:10Go on, Aurora, you got it.
39:11Can you do?
39:12Your hand.
39:13But don't throw it for him.
39:14Just hold it out.
39:15Just get him to come to you.
39:17I'm sure we do protect her a little bit too much.
39:20Probably a little bit cloistered.
39:23Oh, there it is.
39:25Yeah.
39:25Go on, get him a toy.
39:26It'd be good for us to give a dog to kind of break out of that shell a little bit.
39:31Let her do more on her own.
39:34How I know what toy you'd like.
39:38It's nice that Aurora's gone to, like, the toy box on her own.
39:40Yeah.
39:41What can you see in there?
39:42This toy he might like.
39:44Yeah, throw it for him.
39:45No, no, no.
39:45Look.
39:46Woo!
39:47Woo!
39:48Good catch.
39:49Yeah?
39:50Good catch, Ozzy.
39:51And it feels like Aurora has let her guard down a bit.
39:55She's a bit more relaxed with him.
39:57Woo!
39:58Ha, ha, ha, ha.
39:59Good boy.
40:01He's still holding back a little bit.
40:03But she's warming to him, isn't she?
40:06Ozzy!
40:07Woo!
40:07Woo!
40:08Ozzy!
40:09He's looking for treats, I think.
40:11Mmm!
40:12Ozzy!
40:14There you go.
40:14And you can pick the ball up, Lot.
40:16That's the way to get him to give you the ball.
40:18Woo!
40:19Oh!
40:19That looked really good there.
40:21She did not panic.
40:22Yeah.
40:22Just sit down and he'll come over and see you if he wants to.
40:25Ha, ha.
40:26There you go.
40:26I see.
40:27Ha, ha, ha.
40:30I see.
40:31Ha, ha.
40:31Come on.
40:32I see.
40:33Oh, I think he wants me.
40:35Oh.
40:36Oh, there we go.
40:36Ha, ha, ha.
40:38Well done.
40:39Well done, I see.
40:41Well done.
40:43Well done.
40:46Well done.
40:46Well done.
40:47Well done.
40:47He has chosen to bring his toy to her.
40:49He's laid down.
40:51Yeah.
40:52Well done.
40:52Well done.
40:53He likes me.
40:54Oh, I think he definitely likes you.
41:01Oh, best buds.
41:05This is just beautiful.
41:06He's just choosing to be with her and that's what it's all about.
41:10Yeah.
41:10He...
41:12He's making friends with me.
41:14Yeah.
41:16What did you like the best about Ozzy?
41:18Er...
41:19He was soft and cuddly and playful.
41:25The softest pillow you can imagine.
41:31When I saw the way that Aurora and Ozzy were interacting, it was just lovely to see.
41:38Yeah.
41:40Because I can see that friendship forming between them.
41:45Wow.
41:46Ozzy.
41:47Ozzy.
41:47To wrap hands.
41:49Okay.
41:49To wrap hands.
41:50You got it?
41:51Yeah.
41:55Can you imagine going home with Ozzy?
41:57Yeah.
41:58Would that be good?
41:59Or bad?
42:00Good.
42:03Wow.
42:04Wow.
42:05This way.
42:07Ozzy.
42:18When I met Ruby, I wanted to just straight away.
42:22She was a bit nervous when she first came in the meeting pen.
42:27But as soon as we got toys and food out, that's when she was thinking,
42:32oh, you're actually all right.
42:34I thought about her a lot after that.
42:37Of course we decided to rehome Ruby.
42:41Ruby!
42:46She did settle in quite quick.
42:47I think it were obvious it were her home after a week.
42:52Ruby, go on.
42:54Josh and Ruby are inseparable.
42:57Ruby's very energetic.
43:00And she loves to play football.
43:04She just runs up to me, jumps up, and I just have to dribble it past her.
43:09She's a brilliant defender.
43:11My dad loved Chunk, so I'm sure he'd just be happy that we found the right dog for Oz.
43:18She's everything that we could hope for.
43:28This gorgeous little dog come into the room.
43:31And I was like, right, yes, I'm in.
43:33I'm in.
43:35But once we arrived home, Honey seemed to be quite anxious.
43:42It got to a point where Honey wasn't presenting as being a very happy dog at all.
43:48Growling.
43:49Showing her teeth.
43:50She stopped eating or drinking.
43:53That's when it became a little bit more worrying that Honey's more or less like shutting down.
44:00I rang Wood Green for support.
44:02We made the decision that this wasn't the right home for Honey.
44:08Just, yeah, it was devastating.
44:12But it would have just been unfair to persevere just because I wanted Honey.
44:18Come on, Honey.
44:19I really hope Honey finds her forever home.
44:23Good girl.
44:25The dog is definitely still in the picture for myself and the search will continue and hopefully I'll meet my
44:33forever dog.
44:47I was a little bit concerned that cockapoos have got a reputation for being quite boisterous and needing a lot
44:53of exercise.
44:55How easy is it going to be to train? Is it going to be a bit too much?
45:01But we thought about it and eventually we decided that we'd keep Ozzy.
45:15Ozzy!
45:17Come on!
45:20Come on!
45:21Yeah!
45:21Yeah!
45:23Yeah!
45:25Yeah!
45:27Yeah!
45:28Why do you use playful, energetic, and fawn?
45:37Sick.
45:39Ozzy it's easier to train than the tortoise.
45:43Come on!
45:45Go down!
45:48Oh no!
45:50All the treats have fallen!
45:52Ozzy!
45:54Since Ozzy's arrived, I can't remember her saying she's lonely.
45:58Good boy.
45:59She seems much happier.
46:02He's like my best dog friend.
46:06Good boy!
46:08Yes, yes, good boy.
