17:31When you talk to managers or scouts
17:34that have been around this game for a long time, Steve,
17:36many will tell you it's because pitchers
17:37have done a better job at shutting down the running game.
17:39A lot better job of paying attention to guys
17:42that can run
17:43and also utilizing the slide step,
17:45which is kind of a new innovation in the game
17:47over the last eight or ten years, I'd say,
17:50where guys don't lift their leg as high
17:52as they normally would.
17:53They're much quicker to home plate
17:54and that makes it a lot tougher to steal a base.
17:57And when you look at guys' stolen base percentages
17:59last year,
18:00I'll tell you what,
18:01they were terrible in some cases
18:03and that tells you
18:04that the pitchers and catchers
18:05are doing a much better job of holding runners.
18:07You know, now here's an area where,
18:09and you and I have talked about the radar guns
18:11and the use of a stopwatch in judging talent,
18:14and we both agree that that's gone too far.
18:17But from this standpoint,
18:19the running game,
18:21mathematics have really added up
18:22to shut down running games.
18:25I mean, they've got it broken down so much
18:26to how long it takes the pitcher to get it to the plate,
18:29the catcher to get it to second,
18:30and how fast is a runner trying to steal set?
18:32And what happens is the knowledge
18:34hasn't caught up on the other end of the game.
18:37They've really done a great job
18:39of trying to shut down the running game,
18:40but baseball has done a lousy job in general
18:43trying to teach guys to be better base runners.
18:45As you said before,
18:46they rush their athletes to the major league level.
18:49This guy can really run.
18:50He's stealing a million bases in double A.
18:52He gets to the big leagues,
18:53and he doesn't know how to steal a base.
18:55He doesn't know how to get a good lead.
18:56He doesn't know how to read pitchers.
18:57He doesn't know how to read their moves.
18:59As we see a fly ball to run for the third out.

19:03just because it's fast.

19:05That's going to get you thrown out a lot.
