00:05Well I'm really pleased to have joined the Commissioner of Police Service here at the Foreign Office of the FCDO
00:09to speak to ambassadors, high commissioners, diplomats from across the globe
00:14talking up the reality in London because I recognise there's a lot of misinformation, disinformation and lies out there
00:23that gives an impression that London isn't safe.
00:25There are big challenges in London.
00:28Whilst I'm the first person to say London isn't perfect, in fact we're a great city, I would say the
00:33greatest city in the world.
00:36Changing, that means having a great coffee on the way to...
00:41Well I was very pleased that the Ambassador to the US from the UK joined the call
00:45and the Council General from New York as well because we recognise that a lot of this misinformation, disinformation and
00:53lies
00:53comes from the United States of America.
00:55We also recognise that some of these algorithms on these social media platforms amplify hate.
01:03We know how clickbait works and there is an impression given to some people in America and across the globe
01:09from some people in America
01:11that London isn't the greatest city in the world and I recognise why if you're a nativist populist, I recognise
01:17why you're a mono-ethnic populist.
01:21You may have a problem with a progressive, diverse, successful city like London and one of my jobs is to
01:27talk about city but to rebut the lies and the nonsense about London.
01:31Whether it's going to a great bar, whether it's going to a great gig and this summer...
01:36What breaks my heart is things that were on the periphery and the margins are now in the mainstream and
01:41normalised because of people like President Donald Trump.
01:44So it's really important to counter the propaganda coming from President Trump and it's just a fact that London is
01:52just far safer than not just any major city in the United States of America but any state in the
01:57United States of America.
01:59It's just a fact that in fact since records began there has never been more Americans coming to London to
02:04study as a tourist, to invest or to live here.
02:09So it's really important to remind people how great London is but also to rebut the lies and the nonsense
02:13that come from America, not least from the President.
02:16Particularly if there are nativist populist, you don't like the fact that we're a pluralistic, diverse...
02:22Now one of the great things was, this was a frank meeting with the diplomats from across the globe, one
02:27of the things that we've got to do better is to rebut these lies that exist across the globe.
02:33So we'll be talking to colleagues in the foreign office, working with the police to make sure our diplomats have
02:39the facts at their disposal to rebut the concerns people have.
02:42Because people who may read a tweet from the President or other people who may see a YouTube film or
02:49a post on TikTok from amplifiers of misinformation may believe that.
02:53And may not want to come here to study, may not want to come here on a holiday, may not
02:57want to come here to invest, may not want their children to come here.
03:01We've got to address that because sometimes perception can be reality.
03:04We've got to have an experience of what it is to be London Maxed.
03:08Brilliant, so a couple of things.
03:10I've been clear that only is what happened on October the 7th in Israel, a war crime.
03:16What's happened since in Gaza and indeed in West Bank is unacceptable.
03:22Innocent Palestinians have been killed by the IDF.
03:26I think it is important.
03:27This government has called for a ceasefire.
03:30I called for one since October 2023.
03:32It is right.
03:34This government has recognised the state of Palestine.
03:37I think what the Israeli parliament announced yesterday was unacceptable.
03:40I'm somebody who's against capital punishment and the death penalty.
03:44People will see this for what it is in terms of not just the double standards, but in terms of
03:48capital punishment being used in this way.
03:52Progressive, incredibly successful cities they talk down.
