00:00a businessman philanthropist uh one of the owners of the boston celtics thank you for having us here
00:06again this year we're honored we appreciate all you do for the community thank you guys
00:10this is an incredible event it's turned into an amazing event and you you you guys have donated
00:1658 and a half million dollars to children's hospital because of this event is that right
00:20is that number right i hope we're going to clip 60 today unbelievable how many employees will be
00:26shaving their heads today i think 750 are signed up and then i hope a little bit of the momentum
00:31and
00:32enthusiasm of weei in the lobby and the energy we're going to get right over 850 i see okay we'll
00:38get over 850 and then if you don't if you don't participate you lose vacation time is that how
00:43that works and written warning i hate a written warning yeah yeah those are those are strongly
00:50worded email it is amazing i was talking to rob during the break 1100 employees come here
00:57five days a week it's amazing yeah yeah wow what fun yeah you know the biggest thing that
01:05is kind of uh amazing talking to rob off here that was interesting because i'm watching everybody walk
01:10by and they're saying hello to him saying hello to him and generally you think of somebody like who's a
01:15giant ceo that you know owns the company runs the business like the people never see him right and i
01:21asked him i said how many of your employees see you and he goes i sit in the middle on
01:26the fifth floor
01:27so like everybody gets to see me doing everything which is kind of unique in today's world especially
01:33when you're talking about somebody at that level right that's kind of the anti ken you know
01:38leadership approach uh well it's it's unbelievable what you do and throughout the history of this
01:45event uh when it comes to local luminaries who have agreed to get their head shaved list includes tom
01:53brady tom brady ortiz david ortiz uh mike vrabel last year vrabel last year yeah um matt light drew
02:01breeze matt light that like drew brees um shoot uh the big offensive lineman who has a foundation now
02:09joe and drew's one of the nicest guys in boston yeah yeah and today somehow you got drake may
02:15incredible yeah incredible he's a class act uh i've met him in passing but i'm really excited to
02:21spend some time with him he and um and michael's coming oh she is uh gonna be festive yeah fun
02:29high
02:29energy yeah they're we're lucky the city of boston is lucky to have them and i hope they have a
02:34positive
02:34impact for a generation well shime's lifelong dreams a bit odd for an older man but uh is to have
02:41a catch
02:41with drake may so we're gonna see if we can make that happen today yeah a quick a quick one
02:46right
02:46here in the yeah right here there's enough room yeah yeah the paint we were talking about earlier
02:50the patriots actually believed that having a catch with shine will elevate drake may's oh dear yes
02:58i wish that was the case so uh so since i'm on the air i'm gonna be polite and that
03:02could be
03:03that could be the case it may not be it may not be it may not be the case yes
03:08um and you're uh
03:10the ownership group of the celtics maybe maybe you're not surprised but um going into the season
03:16and and uh wondering what was going to be the situation with jason tatum are you uh is are you
03:23surprised by where they are right now this team to be honest yes yeah i mean i think everybody was
03:28optimistic that uh some of the things that happened would have happened like jaylen would prove to be
03:34the alpha dog that he's demonstrated that he is uh but the whole team coalesced the whole bunch of
03:40guys got minutes they may not have gotten and they've demonstrated that they're really good nba
03:45players so everything's worked out beyond all expectations and i feel like you're i was talking
03:51the other day about brad stevens a guy that has earned every right to be boastful and scream and
03:57be somewhat of a self-promoter and he avoids it similarly to you and in philanthropy
04:03what about brad like i just of all the decisions wick made when he was the primary owner the the
04:11decision to elevate brad to danny's spot and then brad bringing in joe mazula who jalen brown has had a
04:16spectacular year i think you could make a good argument that he's the mvp but joe mazula may
04:21have been the biggest winner in all this because you've seen that you can't say it's just the
04:25players what he's been able to do with this team with brad stevens i agree with you on on both
04:30fronts
04:30uh i think stevens is a genius uh it seems like every every move he makes works out positively like
04:37the guys that you think they're not gonna have impact they have a huge impact and then some of the
04:43stars they blossom uh steven's a genius and i think there was probably a little bit of speculation
04:48two years ago that hey coach mazula had a really talented team and now if you look at it it's
04:56like
04:56god coach mazula is a world-class coach and i think we knew that but the the broader community didn't
05:02oh i was dead wrong i thought he was in over his head and i think there was really one
05:06person who
05:06praised joe mazula and said this team would be a top a top three team in the nba top two
05:12in the east
05:12that would be me that would be german celtics fan for a long time the thing we always talk about
05:16with missoula is his personality what we see we kind of like wow but players really respect him
05:25and they seem like they love this guy what is it about missoula personality that we don't know
05:31that the players it really resonates with his players first let's make note that he was here last
05:37year so he was one of the regional celebrities the local celebrities who came and helped us last year
05:43he got his head shaved yes he did um and i i the bit i've been around him what you
05:49see is what you get
05:49right and that sincerity that genuine caring and and he's very direct about it positive or negative i
05:58think everyone respects that and it resonates with the players that he shoots it straight right
06:02uh business side of things you guys paid six six and a half billion or six billion for this team
06:086.1 6.1 was it surprising to you when you look at the two expansion teams that the that
06:15the nba is
06:16looking to get 10 million or 10 billion for right for each of those surprising but positive right it
06:23makes us feel like we might be a little bit undervalued right yeah i mean it's we talked about it
06:29um a
06:30couple weeks ago it's just you know the celtics it's the celtics and the lakers right you look at
06:36franchises storied franchises in the nba and you guys paid 6.1 and somebody's going to pay 10 billion
06:43right for an expansion team but doesn't that tell you the importance of having your own facility
06:48especially the vegas team if they get it yeah they will have it paid for by the taxpayer so it's
06:53like a
06:53huge percentage of that you know and i think the lakers will what 10 billion when the uh genie bus
06:58sold
06:58some of that though yeah so you kind of like know what the value is and just the excuse me
07:04what these franchises mean to the nba especially the celtics yeah and how does that work do you like
07:10you just go to you go finance that at like bank of america and then it's monthly payment yeah yeah
07:15is that how you make paid payments at your atm machine yeah it's like saturday morning it just
07:21comes out of the loan comes out of the checking account every month i'll pay it by weekly pay it
07:26off
07:26quick i'm gonna go to my guy in hnr block uh rob how did that come together you know as
07:32someone who
07:32was an owner minority owner of the last group and then this how long of a process was that and
07:37how did you get involved is it just that you guys decided that we're going to keep part of the
07:41band
07:41together or how did that all come together uh i think it took about a year it made it eight
07:46or nine
07:47months anyway uh and it was a it was a thorough process the the graph specs evaluated a bunch of
07:52different options narrowed it down to a couple uh and then bill chisholm was the lead of one of the
07:59groups uh which is wonderful and i i kind of met with him had coffee with him and we made
08:05sure we
08:05felt comfortable with each other and i was honored to join his team yeah how does it feel i mean
08:09i know
08:10we kind of we talk to every year we do this but it's still like mind-blowing to me that
08:14you're a kid
08:15who grew up from around here and now you own one of the most storied franchises and not just
08:21basketball but also in sports and you know you grew up as a fan like what is like that feeling
08:28like every day you wake up and go wow like you know i'm part owner of this team that i
08:33remember as
08:34a kid probably watching what does that really really like feel like it is kind of crazy so i grew
08:39up in
08:40northampton uh i played i was so good in basketball i played jv when i was a senior
08:47same yeah shout out to kennedy junior high school in florence massachusetts which was my last highest
08:54level of basketball attainment there's a statue there yeah uh and the idea that that yes that kid
09:02is part of the ownership team it still pinched me right yeah it's crazy it's it's really special i'm
09:07very lucky well um what you do for children's and for countless other philanthropical organizations
09:13in this city in this region is incredible um the some of the stuff that is going on at children's
09:21is extraordinary um uh we we're on a you you asked me to be on a committee over there we
09:28are
09:29trying to raise do we is the number public what we're trying to raise more than two billion dollars
09:35over the next seven years and so well greg's gift cards knocked that down to 1.9
09:40let me tell you something you know the we had our first meeting and as there's a lot of uh
09:46rob
09:47called me out and said i can't mention anybody that's on the committee but um a lot of very
09:52important very successful people there and then one corner of the room it's me and marty walsh and so
09:59rob stay i can share all this please uh rob stands up and says you know this is our goal
10:03we're
10:03going to raise over two billion dollars uh and we're going to start off today and and i want to
10:08thank everybody in the room and you know and it's it's you know sports franchise owners it's very
10:14successful business people lists off what everybody has was spaz there no it's like the homer simpson
10:21meme where he goes back and they're and they're like uh you know this guy gave 25 million this guy's
10:28giving 50 million and then i'm just shrinking down i'm like start to tie your sneaker is there
10:34is there an option to finance it over over a hundred years because that's what i don't throw
10:38that out that's what i owe you that's what i would like to do but it's incredible the group of
10:43people
10:43that you put together and i i you know we have a a huge issue in this country when it
10:50comes to mental
10:51health we do and those that do this at children's but correct me if i'm wrong believe that with by
11:01raising this two billion dollars we can virtually eliminate the mental health issue that the children
11:08face in this country but nobody eliminate me but it's a have a significant yes we can lead the country
11:14boston children's hospital is 10 years in a row the number one pediatric hospital in america
11:19number one for both functional medicine and research and so if if we can help boston children's
11:26health boston children's hospital build a mental health practice they will teach others which will
11:31help the world practice medicine and and try and i would say to eradicate but i think it's too it's
11:39too
11:39big i don't think we can stop this disease but we can stem the tide and we can help thousands
11:44and
11:44thousands and thousands of kids yeah that is amazing i mean and also we saw last week i think it
11:48was
11:49with the sort of groundbreaking ruling with meta where you have it being classified as addictive
11:55and harmful to a young girl but young kids in general i mean it's it's the wild west on social
12:00media it is and the the way in which that has just damaged so deeply these vulnerable kids that are
12:07just
12:08in their room the mom and dad think they're just in bed and they're getting bullied online like it is
12:11a
12:11it is one of the greatest issues we face right now is mental health especially in young kids yes and
12:16boston children's has taken a bold step by merging with franciscans and focusing this campaign that
12:22greg and i are working on and greg's being very modest greg's an active part of that and a leader
12:26in this community and has helped inspired others and so i want to say that on the air thank you
12:32but boston will bring the scale of children's hospital to the expertise of franciscans and we will
12:40make the world a better place together awesome it's incredible that's awesome and what they're doing when it
12:44comes to you know when when oftentimes babies are born there are issues when it comes to their heart
12:51and what they are able to do with ai which we talk a lot about on this show and creating
12:57a heart that
12:59will extend the lives of these children is extraordinary yes to me yes extraordinary what
13:06they're able to do so all right well you are an incredibly generous guy i'm very lucky thank you
13:11very we are we're lucky to be here today for this event oftentimes when you come on this show i
13:18know
13:18you sometimes make a random donation to uh foundations that are in need i don't know uh if you've heard
13:24of
13:24any of uh of recent note uh the greg hill foundation oh i do have one i don't know i
13:30don't know i don't
13:31i don't know if you're feeling generous this morning or any i don't want to put you on the spot
13:35here i would
13:36be delighted to support the greg hill foundation way to put me on the spot hill man we would be
13:42delighted to give you 25 000 just uh because you do so much for so many oh you're extraordinary all
13:48right that's unbelievable wow you can pay it later what a closer yeah yeah well done well done yeah
13:53you can pay it later here let me give you one little tidbit when i as you know i come
13:57in early
13:57in the morning and i hear the morning rewind on my way to work yeah this morning i heard the
14:01morning
14:01rewind where uh wiggy was talking about getting the jimmies and putting them in the bottom of the
14:07cup yeah i was like wow that's that's an important tidbit and i will do that i appreciate that let
14:12me
14:12see if you've ever done this one you get the you know how the cupcakes are too big now yeah
14:16you buy
14:16the big one break doesn't suffer but you peel the bottom of the cake off the bottom half of the
14:22cake
14:23and then make it a cupcake sandwich of that genius oh brilliant brilliant oh so ice cream in the
14:28middle no no no frosting with the frosting so then you break out the bottom yeah so that's damage oh
14:34so then the frosting is in the middle correct yeah it's kind of like an oreo cupcake yeah because
14:38nobody wants the bottom of just you know exactly right and there's too much frosting is in your face
14:44the problem is the frosting to the cupcake bite is never good see the ratio yeah so you kind of
14:53put it
14:53in there you get like with the bite of the cupcake you actually get the frosting versus just the frosting
14:57yes that's a good idea right i never thought about that yeah we share you and i share it's a
15:02really
15:02good idea and i like i like the little candy that they put on top of the frost so i
15:06can put that in
15:07they get a little crunch back i feel like curing and solving a pandemic of mental health is a really
15:11important thing but if we can really get toppings on top of ice on bottom of ice cream that's mental
15:16health man it is it is that could really change that is mental health no many times believe me
15:21went there and the jimmies have saved my life being able to put them on the bottom and the top
15:25of my
15:25ice cream i make make fun of nobody's mental health issues i am certainly at the top of the list
15:29of those
15:29i'm gonna try that one all right you're an incredible guy thank you guys for all you thank you for
15:34thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you
