00:00Harsher punishments may not be enough to bring down acts of violence as many
00:05crimes occur in the heat of the moment, according to two criminologists. The
00:10experts suggested better urban spaces, stronger community policing, earlier
00:14intervention to calm tensions and anger management programs as alternatives to
00:19punishment alone. Pi Sundramurthy of University Science Malaysia said that
00:24while violent crime is often seen as premeditated, many incidents happen in
00:28the heat of the moment out of anger, ego or sudden conflict. Another criminologist
00:33Hazreena Begum Abdul Hamid, a senior lecturer at University of Malaya, said
00:38punishment alone was unlikely to be enough as it does not automatically make a
00:42person remorseful or help them understand the harm they have caused. She said a
00:47prison sentence may still be necessary in some cases, especially where a person
00:51poses a danger, but prison alone is not sufficient unless it is combined with
00:56education, support and rehabilitation. Sundramurthy said violent crime often
01:01clusters in high stress urban settings. Crowded, stressful or poorly managed
01:06spaces can raise the risk of violent confrontations. He said better lighting,
01:11cleaner surroundings and more active use of shared public spaces could help reduce
01:15the risk, especially in dense neighborhoods.
