Transcript
00:02Across Yorkshire's Moors and Dales, the world's most famous vets set the benchmark for animal care.
00:09And James Herriot's legacy lives on.
00:14His former trainee, Peter Wright...
00:17All my life, I've enjoyed doing this.
00:19...has been a Yorkshire vet for over 40 years.
00:23There we are. How are you doing, my old mate?
00:26Peter's old partner, Julian Norton...
00:29Not quite the same as operated in theatre, is it?
00:31I know.
00:32...now has two practices.
00:34I don't want to let him go.
00:36One of them in the town where Herriot worked, surrounded by the North Yorkshire landscape he loved.
00:42Everything that you can see all across there is Yorkshire.
00:45And in the foothills of the Pennines...
00:48That's a Hollywood smile.
00:49...a new generation of town and country vets also uphold the Herriot ethos.
00:55I'm just going to have a feel a bit deeper inside to see what we've got.
00:57The teams are united...
01:00Oh!
01:01...and always determined to hit their target.
01:04Yay!
01:06Yes!
01:07As they help animals of all shapes...
01:10It's trying to grow an extra pair of legs.
01:12...sizes...
01:13Hello, gorgeous!
01:14...types...
01:15Catch!
01:16...and temperaments.
01:18No, don't be nasty.
01:19It's definitely not glamorous.
01:22Cut that mucus out.
01:23But it's varied.
01:24So we've actually found gold, literally found gold.
01:27It's rarely easy.
01:28You've won Mr. Wet t-shirt.
01:30But they continue the Herriot tradition.
01:33It's alive!
01:34Treating all creatures...
01:35It's moving!
01:36I can't believe it!
01:38...great...
01:40You're all right, little bird.
01:41...and small.
01:42How are we happening?
01:43Yay!
01:55Yorkshire's highways and byways take many forms.
02:00Winding country lanes between dry stone walls.
02:05Those that loyally follow the path of the river.
02:12Or rise suddenly to skies of heather.
02:17Eternal drovers' roads.
02:20Tracks dating back centuries.
02:23For descendants of the livestock that first travelled these routes.
02:28Crossings feel safe.
02:31As if this land is somehow theirs by ancient right.
02:36But for many pet owners, the dangers of the road are a constant fear.
02:43A fear that's just become reality for Michael,
02:46who's rushed to the practice in Kirby Moorside
02:48with his 14-month-old Springer Spaniel, Brutus.
02:52The car went right over him.
02:54I thought he was brown bread.
02:55But when we looked, he'd done a runner.
02:59And he was halfway down a grass field.
03:02Which was a bit of a relief.
03:04At least he wasn't dead.
03:08I don't want to lose him.
03:11He's got a cut on one leg.
03:13He is limping a bit.
03:14He was whimpering and yelping a lot coming down in the car.
03:19Although Brutus has survived the accident for now,
03:23Michael wants Peter to make sure there are no issues that aren't visible.
03:26He's late to come through.
03:30Oh, dear.
03:31He's looking a bit sorry for himself.
03:32Isn't he just?
03:33He's lucky to be alive, actually.
03:35I think we'll have him up, please.
03:39Good boy.
03:40You're all right.
03:41We had a lot of marming.
03:43That's good.
03:44Nice pink colour, aren't you?
03:46Check his chest.
03:48See if there's any bleeding into his chest.
03:50Just check your heart rate.
03:54How long ago is it since it happened?
03:57It came straight down?
03:57An hour.
03:59Yeah.
03:59Lungs are clear.
04:02It's very steady and his pulse is strong.
04:05He's got a gash on his front leg.
04:06Yeah.
04:07It's just how I feel down those ribs.
04:10I think he's been remarkably lucky.
04:13It's a miracle, isn't it?
04:13It is a miracle.
04:14Yeah, it is.
04:15The other thing, of course, is the bladder.
04:17Is his bladder intact and this sort of thing?
04:19Yeah.
04:20There's some swelling in his abdominal muscles there.
04:23And I think it looks, it feels to me as if the wheel has gone over this part rather than
04:28his chest.
04:29Right.
04:30I really did think he was a goner.
04:32Yeah, he's a fairly laid-back character, aren't you, beauties?
04:35Do you want me to leave him?
04:37Yeah.
04:37I'll give you a ring.
04:38Are you going to stay with Uncle Peter?
04:39And we'll get your soggy out.
04:42Are you going to come too?
04:44Good boy.
04:46Good boy.
04:48Peter knows he has to get to the bottom of things quickly.
04:51Good boy.
04:53He's a brave lad.
04:55And nurse Chloe has come straight over to help.
04:57Good boy.
04:59Well done, Brutus.
05:01What do you want to do first?
05:02Do you want to ultrasound scan him?
05:03I want to ultrasound him first.
05:04Yeah.
05:04What I'm going to do is scan his abdomen and make sure everything's as it should be in there.
05:11I'm not certain about his bladder, so that's something I need to check.
05:15Right, let's have a look.
05:18OK, Chloe?
05:19Yeah, absolutely fine.
05:21Heart rate's nice and steady now.
05:23Good.
05:25Nice definition of intestines there.
05:30They're very clear.
05:31If you get blood in there, then they wouldn't show as clearly as that.
05:36That liver's looking pretty healthy.
05:39Nice edge to it there.
05:41Yeah.
05:42Looking quite healthy.
05:44Just going to check his bladder now.
05:49There we are.
05:51There's his bladder.
05:55There's not a proper catheter in.
05:57And just check that he hasn't got blood in his bladder.
06:02It could signify that he's got kidney damage.
06:06It could mean that his bladder's traumatised and bled.
06:20It could be a big old man.
06:21While Brutus ran into trouble on the road with a car,
06:25it was an off-road mountain bike accident
06:29that left Julian needing medical attention not too long ago.
06:33Look, that's my knee.
06:37And it seems he might not have learnt his lesson.
06:40crashed into a tree yesterday to the frustration of nurse Lucy I thought you
06:46were taking it easy well I was but I was going quite fast and it was nice and
06:51good country and I was going a bit too I was going a bit too fast it was a
06:56narrow track at the bottom with trees on either side that were encroaching on the
07:00path and I could squeeze that I did squeeze through but I wobbled a bit if
07:04you have to go back to your surgeon and tell him that you've done your leg in
07:07again for the same thing he's not gonna be very happy is it and no he won't be
07:11very happy but it did say I was capable of doing pretty much most things we're
07:17not crushing into trays but there are there are only little trees that are more
07:21like saplings and trees press into a ball and went a bit mad when I got open to
07:28the tree
07:33where new life is expected on a farm there are often bumps in the road
07:40and the journey can be even more tense with rare breeds
07:46in Huddersfield Shona's had a call about a pregnant pedigree heifer
07:52I'm going to go see Jess with one of her white park cows it's a first-time carver quite an
07:58experienced farmer she knows what she's doing she's carved quite a few cows so just trying
08:02to get there as quickly as possible because things aren't progressing as they normally would
08:07it's called Tilly I've had since birth so she's just coming up three although Tilly isn't white she is a
08:17pedigree white park we're only 750 breeding females in the world so every carp is special and precious
08:34good girl okay right she's quite slack a knot isn't she she's very slack and then she started pushing
08:41at about nine o'clock last night okay but it didn't progress any further okay and now since I've been
08:48down since sixes she hasn't pushed at all right okay come on Tilly good girl so I haven't touched her
08:58at all whoa she was down on her side pushing about every five minutes and it's just not progressed from
09:17there good girl so there was just a little bit of like a band on the cervix when I went
09:23in but there
09:24is a little bit of room now there's a foot there there's a nose there their waters haven't broken
09:34there's been nothing like that good girlie you just have to do that with girls because I can't feel what
09:43isn't going on so I'm just trying to establish whether she's in labor and it's twisted or whether
09:52she's not actually gone into labor yet she's been pushing but not any really back arching tail up
10:00pushing because that's why I've left it but it's you know nine hours is too long to be pushing the
10:07cervix isn't open now shall I establish whether that I think there's a bit of a twist there is a
10:10bit of
10:11twist actually I think right is it alive it's not moved yet coming up right has the car caused Brutus
10:25serious injury these wounds can be absolutely lethal the position of it does worry me Julian
10:33doesn't know what's hit Rodney's lamb it's in our place for an injury like that isn't it yes and a
10:39giant tortoise the hail from the land of the Sahara it's a bit different to Huddersfield gives Matt a
10:45big shock Wow at the practice in Kirby moorside Peter and Chloe are examining young springer spaniel Brutus
11:02right who's been hit by a car oh yes that's exactly what we wanted indeed yeah you're in there which
11:13means his
11:13bladder's intact overtly there's no evidence of blood there so that's a major concern we can rule out we can
11:21tick off so
11:22that's good right I'm just gonna flick the light up we're just going to x-rays left for because this
11:28is the ones he was particularly concerned about there you are good boy that's the noise we wanted
11:39that shoulder joints looking good so I think we've mainly just got soft tissue damage here certainly
11:45everything is in place so I think Brutus has been a very lucky boy
11:51Brutus may have been lucky so far right shall we take him to but he's not out of the woods
11:56just yet
11:58these wounds such as these appear quite small they can be absolutely lethal sometimes that could
12:05potentially cause a very nasty septic arthritis so we're going to flush it out now and clean it up
12:13looks pretty insignificant but the position of it does worry me I'll just put an odd stitch in there
12:22I'm gonna have to move pretty quickly Brutus is now we're coming around from his slumber good lad
12:33just freshening the edges of the wound to get a nice a nice healing process great that looks better that's
12:41better isn't it Brutus has got away incredibly lightly if he was a cat you'd say he was a part
12:47of his nine
12:48lives good right after a traumatic day and initially fearing the worst Michael's back with his wife Shirley
12:59look who's here look who's come for you hey his chest is and heart are absolutely fine and I know
13:08I've
13:08said it but how lucky has he been I thought I'd be digging a hole I really did yes yeah
13:13so what do you
13:14want some antibiotics and here's some good old painkillers thanks ever so much any problems give us a shout
13:28a phenomenal relief really well they're good vets here I mean they're just spot-on phenomenal result
13:34yeah and he might have learned a lesson as well near Huddersfield I'm feeling the walls of the
13:50vagina Shona's trying to establish if Jessie's pedigree heifer Tilly is in labor the main thing we need
13:57to decide is whether we're going to do a cesarean or not isn't it yeah and if Tilly's unborn calf
14:01is in
14:02danger she is quite swollen in there like she's quite fluidy yeah so and she's not due till next
14:09Saturday yeah and but she is she is slackened off and everything so it's weird that she was straining
14:16that's my only issue sweating temperatures all right it's very slightly up but she's a little
14:23bit stressed and she good girly I can feel the end of the cervix and that's completely shut there's no
14:29a twist yeah I'm just concerned that she's been rigged out down there she was sitting most of
14:36yesterday yeah do you want to see her walking yeah yeah right so they come up here and show everybody
14:42how you can walk come on then we're going to walk oh you're stuffily aren't you so I definitely wouldn't
14:50do a cesarean at this point and she's definitely not actively carving at this point she's lifting her
14:56tail she's definitely not far off is she by the looks of her I'll tell you what I could do
15:01actually
15:01is rectally feel it and make sure it feels all right rectally because when I first put my hand
15:05in and said I could feel it's head I was feeling it through the vaginal walls oh golly because the
15:15cervix isn't open I can't feel right into where the calf is I can't feel into the uterus so what
15:20I'm
15:20doing is going rectally and then I can feel the uterus below me and so I'm feeling if anything feels
15:26abnormal so there should be quite a bit of fluid around the calf which there is there's definitely a
15:32head there it doesn't feel massive so maybe there's two yeah her grandmother is in the end bay over there
15:40she had twins so Millie and Molly were her twins and then Millie had Tilly steady there have already
15:50been some new arrivals here recently this is Bonnie and this is Bonnie's baby Bonnie's baby with Jess
15:59doing her bit for the future of this historic breed there's only 750 breeding females in the world and
16:07supposedly the first British breed of cattle that is really cute James the first went hunting in
16:14Lancashire and he shot a white park with his bow and arrow and apparently he got fed it that night
16:21and he enjoyed it so much he knighted it sir Lloyd that's why we get the name sir Lloyd isn't
16:27it yeah
16:28they're so pretty you come okay everything seems okay I know that Tilly's in very good hands with Jess
16:36so she will keep a very close eye on her she'll let me know if anything's going on I do
16:41think there's
16:41twins in there so that'll be exciting to see and hopefully they don't get too tangled up and
16:45just come out nicely one after the other but obviously I'm I'm here I'm on hand if Jess needs
16:50and help carving them across Yorkshire Julian's been on hand for his next client for many years today
17:07I'm heading to see an old friend of mine a farmer called Rodney who's got a problem with one of
17:13his
17:13young sheep you ready for your tea Rodney's sheep are his pride and joy they're all comical and
17:22they're all different characters and they're all part of family real and it's one of the newest
17:29family members two-month-old Anna who's causing concern one of her eyes just ain't right she's got
17:38like a little mark or something and she were holding her head to one side so I thought we'd
17:44better be letting him have a look and see what he thinks Julian come in to look at you make
17:51you
17:51better hi Julian all right so how's this lamb then but poorly high do you think yeah so what did
17:58it
17:58look like to start with this is a cataract the white bit there that silvery bit is actually the
18:10lens yeah so the lens obviously should be totally see-through in this lamb it's gone all smoky so
18:17that'll probably be why his head was lopsided because he was trying to he wouldn't be able to
18:21see through it so it's very unusual in a sheep sometimes see them in calves and sometimes in
18:28alpacas I don't think I've ever seen her in a sheep before basically there's nothing that we
18:34can really do about it she'll cope but sheep are good at bidding a flock because they they get
18:40security from the rest of the flock so you'll find that she'll probably always want to be near
18:45other sheep when she gets older while Julian knows Anna will be okay a vet on a busy farm like
18:52Rodney's so
18:53it's a bit of a way to journey then maybe I feel a bit like I never took to look
18:57at in his knee he's
18:59familiar with the phrase while you're here so what's wrong with this one then he's got a rump on his
19:05knee
19:05so I thought you could have a look while he was here feels a bit odd doesn't he yeah could
19:19he have been knocked by somebody or yeah because they're always waiting like you know
19:24it's just an odd place for an injury like that isn't it he bends it all right yeah I'm gonna
19:33do with that I wonder
19:37what do you think it's just a knock I don't know what that is
19:48at the animal hospital in Huddersfield in regarding which mommy Jake has arrived from the local zoo with
19:58Bernie to see Matt and Bernie is a sulcata tortoise now these sulcata tortoises it can be massive we're
20:05concerned that Bernie has got some eggs that aren't being passed and retained eggs can be really
20:10problematic morning Jake all right this is Bernie hey come on through let's see what we can do
20:21has she had eggs before Jake yes yeah and it's never been a problem no no so what's the story
20:27so
20:28usually she's annoying keepers when we're cleaning her so I'm moving about the whole enclosure but she's
20:33just sticking to one spot the whole day and not moving at all and how long has she been there
20:38doing
20:38this far a few weeks now right okay what I'll do is I'll borrow her get an x-rayed see
20:44what's going on
20:45there get a blood sample as well check calcium levels send them off all right yep come on you
20:56so we're 12.3 kg I think hopefully let's see is the boom and x-ray machine going big enough
21:04and
21:04after tonight we might have finished in two parts nurse Becky is helping Matt oh no she'll be all right
21:11and while Bernie is not her first tortoise she feels a little in the dark I've done a couple with
21:17Matt
21:18none this size though so it's a first for me she's beautiful the Egyptian sulcata tortoises so the hail
21:26from the land of the Sahara it's a bit different to Huddersfield all right there we go ready
21:39all right all right moment of truth
21:45wow it's a lot of eggs no wonder she's shuffling around like she needs to lay we've got one two
21:53three
21:53four five six seven eight nine ten eggs knocking around in there so Bernie is pregnant with ten eggs
22:01oh she's a big girl those eggs have clearly got a shell and they're ready to be laid and because
22:09she's not getting on with the job if they were to stay in there they can cause problems infections
22:14worst case scenario is they would have to surgically remove those eggs which would mean sawing into that
22:20shell which is by no means a simple undertaking coming up is the spaniel hit by a car on the
22:33road
22:33to recovery I was quite concerned that he might have abdominal damage that some of his body organs may
22:39have been squashed and Julian's going off-road we go up up up and then down down down and that's
22:46the
22:46best bit for a fearsome mountain bike challenge this says mountain biking is a dangerous activity and
22:52carries risks personal injury death etc etc can I cross that bit out
23:05in West Yorkshire at Rodney's sheep farm I mean ain't limping around no after being called out to look at
23:14Anna the lamb's cloudy eye so I don't think it's a joint infection or a joint swelling as such Julian's
23:22now examining a mysterious lump on Tywin the top's knee instinctively as vets if there's something that
23:30we don't know what it is what we like to do is stick a needle in and see what comes
23:34out of it go on
23:35it could be an abscess it has that feeling sort of slightly soft and squidgy I think we'll do that
23:43so
23:45this part of the leg is the same as our wrists so it could have been a bang from another
23:50sheep because
23:51it's on the outside but it could be full of pus which is why I'm going to stick a needle
23:55in
23:56it won't hurt this this goes in and then hopefully something comes out oh look it's like treacle
24:07having just said it's probably not connected with the joint it might be connected with the joint
24:11because that does look fluidy like it could be a joint fluid but it's it's quite gloopy
24:19I think this is bursitis so this is a bit like a condition that people get called housemaid knee
24:27give it a look I'll take it out now so look I'm going to take it out put your foot
24:31down
24:34so that should have relieved the pressure quite a lot it looks different altogether looks like normal
24:39now yeah can let him go now if you want actually we don't need to do anything else so a
24:45bursa is like
24:46a mini cushion underneath the tendon and it makes it run smoothly and if that gets banged or knocked
24:52it swells up and it becomes like that swollen sometimes quite painful and that now it's drained
25:00should go a long way to come yeah coming back I've not seen a housemaid knee in a sheep before
25:06good
25:07all right all right we're done a few weeks later now then want some tea it's feeding time for Anna
25:16whose eye problem Julian diagnosed as a cataract Anna's doing very well she's still sticking with her mum
25:22with all the sheep to this show her how to go on so they can adapt it's like what else
25:27person that
25:28loves the sight of the lie or something like that it's life we've just got to get on with
25:33and Tywin's knee is looking good so today with the help of his son Matthew what he needs to get
25:40Tywin's feet in good shape to help ensure a productive lambing season if they don't have
25:51the feet right when it comes to tip in time they they can't do the job properly basically because
25:56they can't put all the weight on the back feet so it's critical well then it's all right well soon
26:03I don't secret is really not taking too much off because if you go too far you can easily easily
26:09cut them with everything's beauty treatment I know it ain't nice being upside down that's it yep he's happy I
26:17think
26:20all right all right Tom good boy they hate me in a turnover crate because they know if they're going
26:28in there they're having something done with them so they're quick to get back home a bit of food and
26:32they'll follow you anyway and with the job done come on then Rodney can enjoy his favorite afternoon
26:41pastime I like to watch him at front of the house I can see what's happening and how they're growing
26:46and
26:47what they're doing it helps you relax and all and you can see potentially now and if you're feeding them
26:55right or if they need help at the animal hospital in Huddersfield giant tortoise Bernie seems to be
27:09running short on patients but she's hitting at me I think she's a little bit irritated but I would
27:14be if I was pregnant sir Becky and Matt have just discovered 10 eggs stuck inside her it's just gotta
27:23be careful I don't want to have to sedate to get a blood sample but if she'll let me just
27:27hold her
27:27head push those two legs in that might keep her head out very strong that's it all right can you
27:32push
27:32those two legs in I'm trying Matt don't worry if you can't that is fine I'll just give her a
27:38tickle
27:39lovely come on missus try that there we go oh perfect get some blood straight shot right well done
27:47that's just going to check on her red blood cells white blood cells calcium levels because at the end
27:52of the day she has passed eggs before and for her to not be passing them is slightly unusual so
27:57I want
27:57to make sure that there's no underlying condition that could be causing this and really it should
28:01hopefully give us some answers as to why we're having trouble this time some hormone injections
28:07will just help get those eggs moving and we'll give us some supplemental calcium as well to help
28:11there you go there's that calcium in there job's a good one last but not least hormone injection just
28:18gonna put that right into this muscle here well then Bernie right bubble back in the box all being
28:25well those injections should help her to pass those eggs and hopefully within the next day or so
28:31she'll pass them right Jay so yes she's got eggs she's got ten to be specific if not then we'll
28:41just have to cross that bridge when we come to it because at the end of the day things don't
28:44get
28:44passed then you've got no choice but so we're going surgically and trying to move them which is no
28:58mean feet at heart size
28:59in Kirby moorside Shirley has brought her young springer spaniel Brutus back to the practice
29:07with Peter hoping he'll prove that little miracles can happen my next patient is a chap I saw and he'd
29:13just been run over by a car and the owner saw the wheel actually go over his body and I
29:19was quite
29:20concerned that he might have abdominal damage that some of his body organs may have been squashed and even
29:27those quite bright then the effect of that may be apparent afterwards Mrs McCann so I'm just checking
29:37up on him today to see how he's going on morning morning Brutus how are you hey you look okay
29:46to me
29:47have you been all right what have you to tell me is he eating okay yes his abdominal muscles were
29:54quite tense last week and bruised see there's nothing there now you've been nonchalant about
30:01it aren't you Brutus having sniffing a sniff around while I'm examining you hey let's have a look you've
30:07been a very good boy haven't you yeah I see you nicely haven't it well I can't find anything
30:14wrong with him and he's been a very lucky boy well be here yourself Rufus and keep away from those
30:22nasty cars won't you we're doing our best thank you very much was a pleasure absolute pleasure bye
30:29thank you Brutus thank you for coming to see me he's gone I'm so pleased that is recovered to such
30:39an
30:39extent I would say it's back to normal so I hope when Brutus is out in traffic again he does
30:46consider
30:46what needs to be done in other words look right left and right again before proceeding and then
30:53Brutus will live happily ever after with Brutus back out enjoying exercise well away from busy roads
31:05Shirley's husband Michael still can't believe their luck it was devastating to see him run over I was
31:13only maybe 10 meters away I mean just unbelievable I mean he thinks everything is his friend but he's
31:22obviously learning now he's what 18 months old so he's learnt a lesson Brutus
31:29he's my shadow now whatever I'm doing oh Brutus how much do we love you boy
31:45the Yorkshire Dales is the perfect spot to enjoy a peaceful break but undeterred by his recent biking
31:52accidents Julian's come for a not so relaxing weekend I've just arrived at the campsite in
32:00Swaledale I'm very excited because tomorrow I'll be doing mountain bike racing in one of the most
32:05beautiful parts of Yorkshire the closer I've got to the campsite the more and more excited I've been
32:10getting a trip away like this the exam really starts when I press my pop-up roof button and the
32:17roof goes
32:17up and that's when I know that I'm really in full camping mode so that is where we're all gonna
32:24be
32:24tomorrow we go up up up and then down down down and that's the best bit and then we're happy
32:31burgers it
32:35is today I just know how much fun that's gonna be tomorrow when I'm whizzing down at high speed and
32:46doing jumps I'm just totally excited about it it's gonna be a long day in the saddle and I need
32:58to get
32:58up my beauty sleep I think tonight so I'm gonna turn in early
33:10the Ard Rock Festival
33:12remember no mics allowed in the registration tent is the UK's biggest mountain bike event with thousands
33:18of riders competing across the intimidating slopes of Swaledale this is the registration
33:25process and this says mountain biking is a dangerous activity and carries risks personal
33:30injury death etc etc so I've signed that so can I cross that bit out because although he likes to
33:37seem relaxed Julian's more aware of the risks than ever after his serious knee injury I'm slightly
33:46nervous mountain biking at this level is always quite dangerous there's there's challenges ahead for
33:53sure t-minus one minute for the first riders Julian's competing in the over 50s veterans group aptly
34:00known as the grand vet category seven stages 40 kilometers of glorious Yorkshire Dalles countryside
34:08await you this is when the adrenaline starts to starts to flow okay so ladies and gentlemen you may go
34:16enjoy
34:23this course is right up in the high parts of Swaleale it's pretty rocky so try not to fall off
34:28I'm in my
34:29main challenge still to come hello Shona she finally does it fresh concerns over a rare breed calf I don't
34:40know whether you want to check the calf because she's bitten the navel off right at the top so look
34:44at
34:44your navel then and during Julian's epic bike challenge a frightening deja vu
34:53you okay
35:01near Huddersfield lyric what are you up to Jess recently called Shona when she mistakenly thought
35:08her rare breed heifer Tilly was in labor I was very concerned the white parks are they're actually
35:15rarer than pandas and her line has a reputation for twins so I thought because of the twins they may
35:21be
35:21tangled up together or the calf might be dead but thankfully one healthy little girl has been born
35:31very pleased that she came out quickly that she was a heifer and actually pleased that she was a single
35:38calf so I'm pleased that we can continue that genetic line but Jess still has some concerns so she's asked
35:47Shona to come back what I'd wanted Shona to do is um because she thought that she'd felt this sort
35:55of
35:55second head or some lump behind the calf just to make sure that there isn't a dead calf inside her
36:01and to make sure that she's returning to normal um she's healthy good morning Jess hello Shona
36:07has she finally done it you'll be pleased to see oh look at that she's a heifer oh fantastic and
36:16she
36:16was done in 15 minutes because she came so quickly I thought oh there might be another one coming
36:20but then she just settled down oh golly good tilly good last tilly yeah that's fine cervix is closing
36:31nicely yeah so I was definitely wrong about the second calf but that's a good thing but I don't
36:37know whether you want to check the calf because she's bitten the navel off right at the top so have
36:42a
36:42look at your navel then you can feel the cord coming through can't feel any hernias or anything
36:49that's a problem cords intact she's just bitten it off nice and neat hasn't she your mum didn't she
36:56I do like these calves they're so pretty with their eyeliner
37:03so have you thought of a name yet um well tilly was named after matilda the naughty school girl
37:09because she was the naughtiest little calf I knew weren't you wasn't the nice teacher called miss
37:16honey oh yeah yeah honey she just looked at you then when you asked her
37:26i'm really pleased every calf is important and every heifer calf is extra important
37:34it's really good to see another heifer calf in the breed and hopefully in a couple of years time
37:38honey it'll be getting on with having some calves of her own as well and carrying on the breed
37:50a few miles away matt's come to the zoo after treating bernie the giant tortoise
37:56who had 10 eggs stuck inside her
38:01you all right jake yeah how's things how are you not too bad not too bad how are we doing
38:07she's passed all her eggs oh fantastic she actually did it on the way home and in the drive from
38:12the
38:12vets back of my car she ended up laying the last one excellent but we've been putting her in the
38:17field
38:18to sort of give her a bit of tlc a bit more grass to build her back up and she's
38:22thriving
38:25she's trying to escape trying to get the weeds on the outside of the enclosure but um she's eating the
38:31grass as we speak oh brilliant now let's go say hello it's like she recognizes me relax hey it's
38:40all right she recognizes straight off the bat she took to self writing hey it's all right don't look so
38:48concerned hey ah she looks well she looks really bright in the eyes doesn't she she looks happy you're
38:55enjoying yourself that's what we like to see the improvements almost instantly she's a lot happier
39:02she moves about a lot more and she's just like old but you know fantastic looks like she's off she's
39:08not enough of us jake i don't blame them no back in peaceful swaledown
39:27julian's competing in one of the uk's toughest mountain bike events
39:32not long after suffering a serious injury when he came off his bike
39:39this event is basically a continuous ride there's no stopping there's no waiting it's just
39:44a whole day of non-stop riding but riding in tandem he does have some support
39:53i'm doing this with my friend james we go riding every tuesday
39:58this is gone all right isn't it james yeah it's excellent so i've done one of the stages out of
40:02seven and you think it's going to be easy because it's downhill but your legs are stinging by the time
40:09we get to the bottom
40:16every yorkshire vet needs to take time to relax julian's relaxation is just more high octane than most
40:25this is exactly my idea of a perfect day when i'm not at work this is where i like to
40:29be you know
40:30thinking about any stresses or pressures or anything like that you're just concentrating on going as
40:34fast as you can and you're not falling off
40:43you okay
40:58it's not far until the pit stop where julian can assess the damage and refuel can we help us out
41:05yeah yeah just take as many as you want thank you quite hard pull off and hold my elbow it's
41:11not
41:12too bad it's just a flesh wound his bike's chain has been coming off it's been jumping for a while
41:19yeah but while he's an expert at fixing animals for this he needs mechanic amelia if you actually look
41:25really closely it says off you know you ride a bike right yeah exactly yeah yeah you have a different
41:34job exactly that's always the way that i've been it's a major school where i've been driving with my
41:41clutch off apparently you know what i did last time go on when it didn't feel right i went and
41:47bought a
41:47new bike the hard rock race is a 40 kilometer challenge with over 1500 meters of arduous climbs
42:04and terrifying descents but julian has put past injuries and minor flesh wounds behind him
42:13to reach the finish line
42:21that was absolutely as the name suggests totally epic super day and they're all again now really
42:29he just needs to find out how he's fared in his appropriately named veterans category
42:39the second in the grand vet category that puts a smile on my face
42:48the mountain biking community is like you know that everybody's so friendly there's camaraderie there's
42:54a bit of competition and it's just a really really good fun environment
43:00the great tent of the in action that's for sure so i think that's our next stop
43:11that's our next stop
43:11yeah
43:11yeah
43:11yeah
43:14yeah
