00:04Well, this will be an awkward conversation.
00:06We all hold on to stuff that we just don't need.
00:10It's one of our kids' belly button clamps.
00:13Stop it.
00:14So me and the gang are coming for your clutter.
00:17It's a room of doom.
00:19Oh, my word.
00:21We're emptying chock-a-block homes
00:25and laying out every single item.
00:27Hi, hi!
00:29Wow.
00:31I can't speak.
00:33Could you part with half...
00:34That doesn't seem fair.
00:35That's non-negotiable.
00:36This is such a great start.
00:38...to transform your home...
00:40Goodbye, whoa!
00:42...and let the joy back in.

01:14and I would walk 500 more
01:18And I would walk 500 more
01:19And I would walk 500 more
01:20And I would walk 500 more
01:20And I would walk 500 more
01:22Team Silo are back,
01:24reuniting on Scotland's East Coast
01:26and ready to help a family in five here we are this is this is jerry and trish's house they've
01:49got three adult children two of which still live at home and one's just around the corner
01:53jerry had to retire for health reasons but trish and the kids all work shift work and keeping on
01:58top of the clutter is impossible that's where we come in good to go ready ready should we get in
02:04there yeah let's not waste any time the king's family home has four bedrooms an open-plan kitchen
02:10diner and a living room oh i can see toilet roll i can see cat food there's a dryer down
02:17here
02:17utility slash hallway excuse the mess the children are making memories oh yeah yeah remember on the
02:24kids wow okay okay busy in here oh look at the family photos oh this is full it feels like
02:35this
02:35counter here is just where they come in and chuck whatever there is a lot of post and letters there's
02:41so many little trinkets emma's hen do lots of knick-knacks my favorite oh you'll love this
02:46dilly it's a teacup with stones in it was there a plant in there there used to be it's dead
02:51now
02:52they're so sentimental look at this the family tree oh at least all the pens are in the pen box
02:57i'm
02:57just putting them the right way around um there's a lot of arts and crafts around here more than just
03:02arts and crafts this is an artist look at this oh i just organized those rob we've only been back
03:10together for 10 minutes bickering already guys come on come on let's keep going gang the kitchen
03:16diner is joined to a living area toys down here i think there's some babysitting happening in this
03:22house oh my god look gerald king is that him they're the kings yeah this is his oh wow it's
03:28got like
03:28poems in it and stuff he's a poet i do feel like you can tell already they're a really warm
03:33yes family
03:34there's just yeah a lot going on boy i'm feeling this there's a diy in the building right day one
03:41people don't lose the energy now right rob and you and check out the rest of the ground floor
03:46oh bedroom bedroom down here this is rather organized this room okay we've got some emergency
03:53gravy under the bed that's always handy emergency gravy i'm here for this guy i know right i'm liking
04:00this room but upstairs the master bedroom is less of a sanctuary okay okay i'll go this feels a bit
04:09like a storage room with a bed in the middle this is a memory box this is the box you
04:15put it in look
04:16memories but the memories are in this box these are more trinkets oh i mean what are you doing you're
04:22getting out of bed and thinking right let's fix that wall finally why is there a mallet in the bedroom
04:28downstairs you and rob are finding more signs of home improvement in progress some diy has
04:34definitely gone on here you wouldn't normally have plumbing for a washing machine right here in
04:38the house this looks like a project that was not quite finished yeah there's cupboards beyond this
04:42but you're not going to get to them with the dryer being here you have to do this oh you
04:46and you
04:46i don't want to lose you can you just lower me down a bit further
04:50go on not too far i've got you look oh these are some old photos hold my legs you and
04:58you're not
04:58light you know oh well this is definitely the daughter's room isn't it back upstairs there's
05:03signs of some diy success i like the shelves that looks organized to me but then this is a bit
05:10of a
05:11situation under ear dilly yeah i mean if this is not the sign of a 20 year old rose in
05:17your room
05:18half bottle jeepers creepers outside there's a pleasant surprise everything that should be in
05:24the shed is in the shed this is one of the first times we've seen a shed that it's actually
05:28being
05:28used as a shed well that was interesting wow no matter how much stuff is in there there is so
05:34much
05:35love in that house their little trinkets their memories their photos it's just a shame when
05:40they're put next to the paint rollers and the there's a lot of takes the lovey-dove in the sound
05:45next to each other yeah there is literally not one system anywhere is there yeah well we've got our
05:49work cut out first game oh yes oh oh i'm hearing voices hi family hi hi we've been sneaking around
06:02the
06:02house having a little look who's the diy-er mom your tools are everywhere everywhere you see these
06:09beautiful photo albums and then a mallet yeah i actually wondered where that was under your bed
06:14excellent so usually we would ask that you let go of at least 50 of everything that's in the house
06:21bye bye bye perfect see you later hi hello trish and jerry have been married for almost 30 years
06:33despite an unlikely start when i first met trish she didn't like me i was a bodybuilder and a bouncer
06:42and a kiss a dram and he had nothing on apart from a like a leopard print thong i think
06:51he would
06:52describe it he completely loved himself and i thought yeah you're not really for me
07:00he kind of chased me back and forth for a wee while and he's a nice guy
07:05he made me laugh several years ago yeah gerald is really fun and vibrant originally my first dream
07:14was to be a pop star i played in a number of bands when i was younger but that just
07:18wasn't going to
07:19happen so i was always good at drawing and i wanted to be a cartoonist he loves art he loves
07:24to draw
07:25trish is very kind and generous we're stronger together there you go
07:31the couple still live in their very first home where they brought up their free now adult children
07:37growing up we never had very much but we never really noticed because my mum and my dad would give
07:44you the last pound out of their pocket if they could when the kids were young we couldn't really
07:51afford much so we used to apply for the son's 9.50 holidays and there's like caravan holidays all over
07:57the uk the way we raised our kids uh it wasn't about uh spending money it was about spending time
08:03with them and making sure that they had a the best life like that we could give them like two
08:08of their
08:09three kids still live at home but it's more than four fully grown adults fill in the house
08:15ma'am why is there a screwdriver set in the bedroom's room so many people come in and out of
08:21the house and
08:21they all leave things and the cupboards get fuller and fuller until eventually you've got no cupboard
08:27space to put it in for god's sake i always used to think that trish was the messiest but even
08:33when
08:33we first met you'd see a trailer closed from the front door to the bedroom but i think nowadays it's
08:39me that's that's the messiest one managing their full house has become harder since a life-changing
08:46diagnosis at the beginning i thought i was just getting older you tend to forget things yeah i had to
08:51to
08:51to check him really into going to the doctors because he wouldn't accept that there was anything wrong
08:56at the age of 55 after 18 months of poking and prodding i was diagnosed with young onset alzheimer's
09:03disease within weeks of the diagnosis i was retired through ill health i also had to and in my driving
09:11license and that was a huge loss that's all my independence gone at the age that he was never
09:17expected it's going to be dementia kieran you seen the tv remote he picks things up and he puts things
09:24and we're not allowed to move anything where would he have put it i know whatever it is
09:31well i maybe don't remember a few hours later but yeah or the bin i'm not been raking
09:37we banter a lot yeah about you forgetting and i i think that's what uh helps everybody cope it's my
09:43choice this time you play rubbish you play rubbish the house has always been yeah full of laughter full of
09:49laughter and full of life and full of love i just need the house to be more organized and safer
09:57for
09:58gerald this is the time to do it because i think if we were doing it any later he wouldn't
10:04be able to
10:04cope with any change right we know that this process is a really important one yeah so you don't have
10:14to
10:14let go of half the kids but definitely half the clutter do you feel ready for that yeah yes absolutely
10:19well we let's just get on with it ready yes come on we've got 12 hours to completely empty the
10:28king's
10:28home you got packing to do yeah boy let's do this and i'm helping trish pack up hers and jerry's
10:34memory
10:35filled bedroom oh trish are you excited to do this i am are you excited yeah how do you relax
10:41in here trish
10:42i don't relax much at all so you're are you a nurse no i am our care worker what are
10:49your shifts
10:49usually like i do day shifts and back shifts oh blimey yeah trish there is so much sentimental
10:55stuff i keep packing away you have kids and you sort of try and keep on top of everything and
11:01then
11:01since his diagnosis i don't know what to throw out because i don't know what he's going to need
11:05to prompt a memory we won't let go of anything that you feel is going to bring happiness to gerald
11:11i as things progress although to be fair probably we do need to be forced that's her job that's where
11:18she comes in let's go in here and pack up this room we've taken as much advice as possible from
11:26experts because with jerry's diagnosis we know that he might struggle to make decisions really quickly
11:32so we're just going to go at his pace we're going to follow his lead and just be completely led
11:37by him so you sit there i'm going to start putting in all the arts and crafts he's got the
11:43most
11:43incredible support from trish the kids so i feel like together we are going to get this done when
11:48do you think you last sat at the table together a good maybe year a couple of years how have
11:52you found
11:53living in the house as it is been quite difficult actually yeah because my dementia affects my visual
11:58awareness can't judge distances and so much junk i've fallen over a few times okay i do attempt to
12:05try and make tea yeah but the last attempt was a coffee chicken casserole what is coffee chicken
12:10casserole instead of using gravy granules i use coffee granules and i didn't realize until i've actually
12:16i was actually serving up oh my gosh disgusting oh bless you i have now been living with dementia for
12:26seven years unfortunately probably over the last year or so it's uh things are starting to progress
12:30it's not just my memory it's all my abilities i've lost i i i'm losing if anything was even done
12:36uh in in the in the house or the garden it was me that would do it any hand for
12:40heavy lifting i'll be
12:40right in there uh no problems whatsoever now i'm lucky if i can lift a knife and fork again it's
12:47it's
12:47it's been very frustrating and what is this big bit of wood it's my piece of wood it's your piece
12:54of wood yes i always wanted a bit like a like a big chopping board just needs a good clean
12:58doesn't
12:58it i think so yeah don't tell trish that because she doesn't get thrown out so what have you done
13:05to
13:05the house since you got here i built these shelves and things gerald used to do a lot of it
13:10he can't
13:12now so i kind of started taking over and find i really really enjoyed it what does life look like
13:16now for gerry with his dementia he's getting worse and he needs a peaceful house you know his brain
13:24can't shut off because there's so much stuff it's like sensory overload yeah it's just everywhere
13:31the clutter in the house really upsets me and i think the diy is my way of trying to make
13:38it better
13:39clearly it does not make it better just gives us more places to hide things until it doesn't oh my
13:46lord i hate that it's got like this and i hate that i've let it get like this this is
13:52all down to
13:52me this is my fault i should be able to have a nice house it shouldn't it shouldn't be hard
14:03i just need to do better i just feel like a failure you're not a failure to be fair no
14:08i i am this is
14:10not failing this is a really difficult situation to manage on an emotional level let alone a physical
14:16level you're still working as a carer caring for your grandkids your children caring for your husband
14:22then coming home and trying to do all your diy i'm feeling at that no i'm not failing look at
14:26your
14:26wardrobe look at the wardrobe you're smashing it we can't just go in all guns blazing and say you
14:32don't need that you don't need that let it go because there'll be sentimental items in this house
14:39that trish and the kids think will trigger memories for jerry in the future thank you and we're just
14:46going to try and lean into what jerry thinks is going to help him moving forward an anti-fatigue daily
14:51motion just in case you know i was like you never know you might get fatigued such a hard-working
14:57person that i am halfway through and this family are flying we're getting through it so i like to see
15:03come on i forgot how easy it is to pack up a house when you're dealing with five adults i
15:10think
15:10this is pajamas i've seen pink it's no mine hopefully no breakable in there they know that
15:18this is essential otherwise dad's not going to be able to manage in this situation so they're just
15:23cracking on right come on sir let's do it do you love living at home yeah i absolutely love living
15:31at
15:31home like it's just so joyful i honestly regret moving out i don't think i'll be moving out anytime
15:36soon anyway just with like helping with mom and helping with dad's and oh yeah and like it makes
15:43me happy knowing that i can be there to help them the worst that my dad's obviously getting the more
15:49challenging it is for my mom i'd rather make things easier for her i've got a responsibility of being here
15:56and helping out because at the end of the day he's looked after me growing up for my life now
16:04it's
16:04my turn to do it for him and i would never not do that you have your friends in that
16:10over not very
16:12often obviously with the more clutter and because obviously i don't go out as much anymore to look
16:17after my dad it would be nicer to have people come over yeah and you just feel like you can't
16:23no just
16:24yeah it's a bit too much sometimes i think here put that with the um umbilical cords no it's not
16:32it's a sandwich bag the clamp it's a belly button clamp it's not you're holding one of her kids belly
16:36buttons stop it stop it catch oh you're just an hour left to get every single item out of the
16:44house
16:57oh my god what a nickel oh my god it looks huge i could actually cook where's my block of
17:06wood oh no
17:09my block of wood what we said how are you feeling i am nervous you're nervous yeah i've got nervous
17:19belly may need a nervous poo yeah stephanie hi hello this is the scottish summer i was expecting hello
17:29hi honey do you know what let's save the hugs for inside i am really excited are you yeah
17:36this is like the moment of trust now here we go oh my god how does that all fit in
17:45the house
17:46welcome home out of the 350 boxes unpacked from the king's home we counted 1296 greetings cards
17:59762 knickknacks and 106 electronic instruction manuals
18:07why do you think you have held on to so many things memory stuff i think is hard for me
18:13and more
18:14recently i struggled to know what to get rid of because i don't want gerald to lose that memory we
18:19don't want you to feel like you're losing in fact what we want to do is bring you back
18:23yeah your life and bring you back space and time which are more important than the stuff i mean you
18:30had a something like 762 trinkets like um 33 of which were pigs oh yeah i yeah yeah i collect
18:40because they were cute right do you all feel prepared do you all feel ready yeah absolutely yes to the
18:46kitchen let's go let's go let's go we counted 112 random items on the king's kitchen island so i'm
18:55kicking off the salt in the heart of this family's home this is your kitchen island none of this belongs
19:06on a kitchen island no absolutely so anything you want to keep you've got to try and find the sections
19:11it lives in and then let go of the rest yeah well that's broken so that can get put in
19:15the bend
19:16do you want to fix that what with a bit of tape that is effects but yeah because that can
19:20go in the
19:20bend oh is this like from that was from the way down so you're keeping this yeah this weird flower
19:26pot
19:26my mum and dad brought me that back from their holiday children's stories yeah that was mum's and
19:32dad's i'm gonna use that to be to the kids at night please oh my god you found it that
19:37was a christmas
19:38present for my dad and i couldn't find it it was right in front of you mum keeps hold of
19:43everything
19:44i mean she's got stuff from her birth old photos old bears just stored in boxes in the attic and
19:51under
19:51the stairs she's got teeth hair yeah some of the stuff that she's kept as wild she's one of those
19:58people that take their placenta home what was the dream for your kitchen island it would be completely
20:05empty yeah and we could chat and have cups of tea that was did that ever never once oh and
20:11also
20:11because he put that big old solid disgusting block of wood at it so nobody it's ginormous repulsive
20:20i'm pretty sure that can go every now and again i sand it down because it's moldy i just thought
20:25it
20:25looked fantastic on the end of the the the kitchen bunker but that's been the bane of my life since
20:30it
20:30went up there it's all moldy yeah yeah okay it can go yeah we need to get a move on
20:40so while the kids
20:41sort through the perishables i suppose i can let go of my wine i need jerry and trish to get
20:46cracking
20:47with the crockery there's over 50 mugs here i think we can definitely reduce it down to 16.
20:53right let's go so if we keep the ones i think we should keep the set i'm gonna keep them
20:59for soup i
20:59think so how many is that three six mom what are you keeping these so we use them a lot
21:06eh they're
21:07nice ones i think they're all finding it more difficult than they thought especially trish keep
21:13that one i think jerry's nervous about letting something go and then forgotten he's letting it go
21:19but if jerry wants to bring something home it comes home they can definitely go but i think he's
21:24actually quite ruthless that one can go this one trish she is very sentimental and nervous to let go of
21:32absolutely everything even if jerry's like i don't even know what that is stay safe yeah if something's
21:40like a soup bowl rather than a mug all right so get rid of some of the regular mugs and
21:44keep your soup mugs
21:45that doesn't seem fair are you finding this difficult i am that's ridiculous it's not
21:51ridiculous just tell me why so my friend gave me that but you never drink out of it no you
21:56need to
21:56have a space in your house so that you can have a cup of tea exactly one day that'll happen
22:01if you can
22:01let go of enough yeah you will have space yeah this is from edinburgh christmas market are you keeping
22:07that one no oh well done right that could go out because nobody uses that right that can go out
22:14edinburgh
22:15science festivals that can go that could go out yeah this has been a long time coming actually yeah
22:24that's all chipped you get the other one then dan well done all right well go on muscles right let's
22:30go
22:30down to the piles guys jerry don't forget your wood slab oh my wood yeah do you reckon we sell
22:37this
22:38or donate here do you think someone else i don't think anybody's going to be grateful for that no i
22:43know
22:48hello in the king's kitchen the team have plans to keep the space permanently clear jerry said it's
22:55everything is a trip hazard yeah it needs some really clever storage so that all of those arts and crafts
23:00things can go away did you just say craft are you feeling all right this morning i know maybe it's
23:05a song yeah i think you've got sunstroke i just love jerry and he loves crafts so i'm all about
23:12just giving him storage what i'm thinking is to build a massive storage unit but incorporating jerry's
23:19artwork how you know sliding screen yeah well how about this whole sliding piece be the area for his
23:26artwork oh nice oh nice okay and that there will keep this entire space neat and tidy lovely that's
23:32what we want with four days to pull off his big build rob is straight on the tools so i'm
23:38making the
23:39first part to the living room unit the base just like when you're building a house if your foundation
23:47isn't right then everything else in the house is going to be off once all my screws are in
23:52i'll be able to take it inside and fit it oh boy
24:04i'd like to see you just doing some work thank you very much
24:07it's mid-morning at the warehouse and amateur artist jerry has a job to do in the stationary section
24:13how many pins do we need just a couple really three brand new packs of pencils which one do you
24:19prefer we'll keep that one when did you get into art uh primary school yeah i wanted to be a
24:24cartoonist
24:25actually when i when i left so is that how you ended up in architecture yeah because it was still
24:28something to do with drawing again which is what i loved oh i love that so you've got to turn
24:32your
24:32passion into your job yeah so if you've drawn everything clear i have yes yeah wow this itself is a
24:39um with a group and we write all our own original soundtracks oh cool yeah yeah and we've got two
24:45albums out just now and that's a cover you're incredible jerry not at all yeah you are do you
24:50want to keep any of these i don't even know where that's come from to be honest and that's the
24:53sad
24:53thing is uh you don't remember half the stuff what was it like when you first found out about having
24:59alzheimer's like most people you think that uh that uh alzheimer's is an old person's disease you don't
25:05think that people that young can be affected by it but i've met people in their 40s when you first
25:12got told it was alzheimer's what did that feel like i was all right i think but the world totally
25:17changed yeah i had to retire from work i had to surrender my driving license your whole life just
25:24changed overnight but i got into poetry through the dementia it's my thoughts and my hopes some dreams
25:30it's also my medication it lets me put down on paper how i feel about my dementia and what it
25:36feels like to live with dementia and now that's another form of therapy yeah that's what i find
25:40here yep i think it's very important to be involved in things like art uh poetry writing things that
25:47it keeps my brain stimulated i'm convinced it slows down the progress of the alzheimer's
25:53i enjoy my heart i would love to leave it as a kind of a legacy uh for my wife
26:00and my children so
26:01they can remember me for for who i was not who i'm going to be
26:09what's this one this is a poem that i wrote for trish has trish ever heard it no you should
26:13tell
26:14it babes yes you want to come over a minute oh okay uh this is a wee poem i've got
26:19a wee time to
26:20have a look at it so i've uh oh lord it's so romantic i cup your heart as if my
26:27own to carry you
26:29wherever i go there's no place i'd rather be than here with you just with me oh unfold your wings
26:37my
26:38angel on earth embrace me with the warmth of your love my own sweet angel sent from high to comfort
26:44me when i stumble and cry there you go how was that like oh that's lovely it was beautiful yeah
26:54it can
26:55be a little romantic sometimes i think and it's it's special because he writes these things down
27:02but he doesn't say them so we find out more about how he's feeling about things
27:08when we read his poems than we ever do with him telling us how he's feeling about things
27:15so it is it's really it's really special pad looks like it's the same bit of day
27:20okay so they can go and then i think jerry yes we're there we're done thank you
27:25you're smart the team a mid-bedroom swap at the king's and the biggest room is now up for grabs
27:33steph's long-term plans are to look after dad okay so i feel like we need to give her the
27:37biggest space
27:38she's in her 20s you know she wants to have pre-drinks here she wants to have parties we could
27:42almost give her two space in here it could be sort of bedroom and then something a bit more
27:45entertainment vibes i'm excited for this room i can't wait to have a little toast with her at the end
27:50of it with a bottle of riser oh i'm sure you're ready for that this is going to be a
27:54fab pad
27:55trish trish come on trish trish trish trish
28:04in the memorabilia section do you want any of your birthday cards no no that was amazing
28:09while it's proving easy to let go of some family heirlooms steph do you want your umbilical code
28:14clear absolutely not get rid of that somebody's tooth in there you want it no it's fine
28:19others are prompting more treasured memories anniversary cards maybe we'd keep one or
28:24two and just what do you do for your anniversary i sing to it every year what do you sing
28:28darling
28:29happy anniversary another year of love has gone by i think i'll know when he doesn't sing that
28:39that i've lost him oh that'll be when i know he's gone gerald is the most amazing husband he's not
28:47perfect neither am i and i think that's why we work but our yeah we've our relationships definitely
28:53changed definitely definitely changed as things progress i'm sure he'll forget who i am when you
29:02just never know with dementia i mean he could wake up tomorrow and not know who we are you you
29:10just
29:10don't know and i i feel sad i think sad for him and sad for me but sad for him
29:19do these help you jerry
29:22like if you look at these do they trigger a memory or not really actually i don't feel like i
29:28used to
29:28feel yeah it's just the outside was taking bits and pieces away again so yeah but is it helpful to
29:34have these things around i like the photo albums i'll keep them i married trish for trish i didn't marry
29:40trish so she could become my care uh we're still really close but romance wise it's probably there
29:46isn't much that like because um the dementia has taken my feelings away i try to be as supportive as
29:56i can with trisha and with my children so that part of me hasn't gone yet like which is great
30:02hi baby
30:03i was always quite an extrovert gone really well with people uh and that's going to be changing
30:10sometime in the future uh and i'll be unrecognizable as a person the guy that she married was um
30:19hot to trot like yeah we were young and uh i'm not the same man trish married that's for sure
30:28who's that that's keelan is it yeah you need to have these accessible yeah
30:34oh god i was not ready i can't even look at it i can't even look at it i'm never
30:43gonna get you
30:44out with suspenders on my head now speeding through the third and final section of the day
30:51you don't need all these drill bits and sets no you only need one pair of pliers yeah we're knocking
30:58trish's diy section on the head maybe all the manuals can go yeah and racing towards the finish
31:03line we have got 15 minutes till they shut the doors on this warehouse i feel like we really need
31:10to get as much in those piles as possible let's do it let's go go go go go come on
31:18come on some of the
31:21teddy bears definitely that was from when um get red right two minutes family jerry i think that can
31:33go as well yes go go go go come on girls last job everyone to the pile to the pile
31:44oh god
31:45yay day one in the warehouse is done i really enjoyed today i think they all know the importance
31:55of doing this process right now and it has to be done we have to get back to that house
32:00with 50
32:01less if we can and change their lives
32:09day two in the warehouse and while the king family are in full clear out mode
32:15what's going on my tissues for because you've got loads dilly's entered the building good morning
32:22everybody oh no no and she is not mucking about first of all we are going to start with clothes
32:31everyone has too many clothes now you only had about a meter each of hanging so this is what you've
32:39got
32:39right to hang your clothes on okay at least try and get it god loves a trier god loves a
32:45trier god loves
32:46a trier keep keep that that's that one yeah i'll keep that because i wear it as a jammy top
32:55yeah i've
32:56got my benedorm top yeah we're keeping the benedorm top i do love it i do you love it then
33:01it stays
33:02we're going again this year so are you oh my gosh it was that good yeah it's amazing
33:07i've never actually wore them ever oh why i don't really like them on so why didn't you return them
33:13i'm a bargain hunter when it comes to all this stuff so i'll buy all in the sales and then
33:17i put
33:17them on my vintage you need to get in the habit of trying to sell it while it's still got
33:21you know newbie tags was this secret number staying or going well that was my 21st birthday
33:26dress okay but i would get rid of it you're not going to wear it i won't wear it again
33:29okay
33:30right donate that can donate donate don't like them is this your rail this is my real yes
33:36i mean look at this that is a jacket isn't it and a half i bought that for stephanie's 21st
33:43fabulous you don't think it fits me yeah i'll tell you what we'll go with this my winkle pickers we
33:49know i love a bit of leopard print they're brilliant aren't they i feel like the penguin
33:56oh my god i can't even walk properly in them
34:04dilly might be larkin about but at the king's it's all work and no play with the living room build
34:10this is the first section of the big mega unit in order to make sure i get these all lined
34:16up top
34:16nice and flush i'm clamping them up and once i have this base all screwed into position level all
34:24off beautifully that's when i can then build up and ewan is tackling a pet peeve if you haven't got
34:31any
34:32household lubricant which is the best thing to use for your hinges the alternative is to use some cooking
34:38oil so i've got some olive oil here and i'm using this little pipette and what we want to do
34:43is give
34:43the hinge a quick wipe just to remove any dust and then we want to get this oil into the
34:51hinge so we
34:51can slowly move it as we drop some of the oil into the moving parts and give it a little
35:00wiggle and there
35:01we go the squeaking has gone at the warehouse the penguins vanished and dilly is back there is a lot
35:13of fun happening in this way too much and not enough sorting ready to rattle through jerry's records how
35:19often do you listen to those never we don't have a record player i'll be quite happy to donate them
35:23if you sold them all as a collection the money you get from that you might be able to put
35:28to charity yeah
35:29that'll be good good and turn our attention to trish's knick-knacks one of the things that i
35:34sometimes make me a little bit itchy the amount of trinkets that people have in their house and i
35:39think you had 762 trinkets i mean what is this that's elvis elvis the pig i got that one when
35:48i was
35:49pregnant so these pigs are staying yep do we need a benidorm boat that could go for sure what about
35:55these
35:56for me they all have a memory behind them okay what's the memories gerald's bought me them on
36:00anniversaries that was when stephanie was born that was when we had both of the boys i think my
36:06mum bought me that one so i would like to keep some that one can go that one i'd like
36:12to keep because i
36:13quite like that one this one's staying yeah i don't know if i'm keeping it because i'm just being
36:17sentimental or what do you feel when you look at that peaceful like it reminds me of us two hugging
36:22oh and he doesn't really hug me very much so now really do you miss that yeah he does sometimes
36:29but
36:29it's you know he doesn't and do you think that's because of his illness yeah before that he was
36:34really tactile and you know we would sit together and he'd cuddle me in but now it's kind of a
36:40forced
36:40thing i'll give you a hug i know it's not jerry hug they say that dementia is like christmas lights
36:48you know when you bring your christmas lights out of the box so you never know which lights are
36:51going to be on i miss gerald's affection most he used to be like cuddly and he doesn't really reach
37:00for my hand anymore he's lost that okay yeah okay yeah good good all right a thousand losses when
37:11you're a partner of somebody with dementia we lose him in a different way every day it's a lot to
37:20get
37:20used to isn't it i know but i've had years to get used to it so i know but still
37:24it's also that reminder
37:25isn't it that things have changed yeah they change every day so and how are you coping with that you
37:31just do yeah you just you just have to you don't really have a choice so long as he's happy
37:37then
37:38that's fine because he's the one that's living with it yeah you've got a good good support network
37:42around you i have a a group of my people good well it's important so with that yeah i feel
37:51like we
37:51should keep that i think we should that's a good one yeah we'll keep those we'll reduce the other
37:55little bits okay life's changed for trish the guy that she married is now changing and so i think
38:01that must be impossibly hard and those conversations stem from what you may deem as a silly little
38:05ornament you have to make sure that we're keeping the things that do mean something but yes we're
38:10letting go of the elvis the pig for example do we definitely need all these candles they can go
38:15great mom what's a tornado scrub it could go out it's rubbish that can go that can go that can
38:23go
38:23i've never used them for years a ceramic and induction hob hygienizer i don't even know what that
38:30is there that final five minutes this is your last chance to go through this whole warehouse that's an
38:40old one well do you need it no not really well that can go that can go yes let's go
38:50i need to get back to the gem
38:59that's it well done oh i'm gonna drop them go go go go last 30 seconds
39:05let's go let's get it on the piles quickly great are you well done good job well done team well
39:16done
39:17after two long days at the warehouse the family have managed to reduce a massive two-thirds of their
39:23belongings well done it is 9am and we need to get the king's possessions back in the house this is
39:43looking good isn't it i had such a good warehouse day you really do appreciate adult children extra
39:53muscle we're at such a crucial time in this family's life yeah that we have got to get this
39:57right right let's do this come on rob your tools are everywhere yeah well because i'm still working
40:04aren't i first up rob's in the entrance way reconfiguring the family's utility yes this is an
40:10unconventional place for a utility room but jerry needed an accessible toilet so they had to move the
40:17utility room from that side out here but you really couldn't store much yeah i think the one
40:22thing i need to do is strengthen this up because of this age all of this has come a bit
40:27loose so
40:28just reinforcing it before i go and put everything back
40:34just like that it's back in place simple upstairs i'm bringing some bling to steph's new long-term
40:41lodgings this little alcove to me screams bar sticking her fun with her friends up here
40:48and get ready to go out one last finishing touch these are just really simple cheap led strips it's
40:56as bright as a benedon strip i reckon remove the bit of sticky back and then i'm just gonna go
41:01and
41:02follow the alcove ready
41:08benedon time baby downstairs ewan's got a bright idea jerry's told me that with his alzheimer's
41:17he can struggle with his spatial awareness and now that we've moved the bedroom down to the ground
41:22floor here there's the bathroom that he'll have access to just across the corridor so i've picked up
41:28some of these motion activated lights they have a little magnet that's peel and stick so i'm going
41:34to pop the magnet on like this and then this will come on automatically to help jerry find his way
41:40to
41:40the toilet in the evening time outside rob's got an artistic take for his living room unit this panel
41:48is the bit of the pièce de résistance not only is it the sliding panel that hides everything but it
41:55also doubles as a display for one of jerry's amazing bits of artwork i'm having to stick two pieces
42:01together because they just don't make sheets that wide to keep steph's close shopping passion in check
42:08dilly's creating a clever sorting system what i thought is i'll grab it one of these drawstring bags
42:14and leave that by the front door so steph reminds herself every time she walks out the door she's
42:20got to return those things you know when you buy something if it doesn't fit return it if you don't
42:25like it return it but as well as having that drop bag what you need is a clear plastic file
42:30to keep our
42:31receipts in it's always worth taking a quick snap of it just in case you lose that snap it before
42:36we stash it
42:39the family let go of so much in the warehouse that i got soft and i fished out a beloved
42:44item from the
42:44donate pile i rescued jerry's wood from the pile because he loved it so much instead of being a
42:52useless training board i'm going to turn this into a letter ledge and jerry can forever keep his random
42:58piece of wood it's a little bit too rustic for my liking at the moment so i'm gonna sand it
43:04down
43:05because then i can get all the like tea stains and really deep marks off now i've got these little
43:12file holders that i'm gonna attach them to the underside of this shelf and the letters will go
43:17inside you either file it because it's an important document shred it because it's a piece of junk or action
43:23it
43:27okay you ready for this
43:32file it shred it action it
43:36in this family they've got as many pets as they have humans so i want to differentiate their sponges
43:44and a really simple way you can do this is to cut your sponges into different shapes there we go
43:51you
43:51need to trim a bit off we have bone for the dog's bowl fish for the cat's bowl regular rectangles
43:58for
43:59human bowls it's good isn't it what are you doing i'm cutting these sponges into shapes don't look at
44:06me like that mate you have got way too much times on your hand this is essential i'm sure we
44:11need to
44:12prioritize the fur babies i can't entertain this this guy do you like it yeah i am creating these lovely
44:23little labels that i'm gonna put on every single cupboard every single container i've put a bit
44:28of a stripe border around it's because i just think it highlights it a little bit more and hopefully that
44:33will help jerry oh god i'm putting this on the end come to this box for some spice outside i'm
44:40organizing
44:40a unique retreat for trish when most people think sanctuary they think spa but when i was talking to
44:48trish she told me when she does diy she finds it really relaxing really therapeutic so i thought
44:54that's it we need to make a diy done pig balls come with little attachments that you can add to
45:01the holes inside the board and then you have got a tub for all your spanners somewhere to hang your
45:09hammer gonna cover the walls in these so i can hang all of trish's tools up and she can get
45:15to them
45:15any time she needs oh there you are and where's stacy stacy come come quick i feel like i haven't
45:26seen any of you all day because i've just had my head down trying to get stuff done so i
45:30have just
45:31been to pick up some photos which i had printed oh these are photos with jerry oh cute and i
45:38thought
45:38we could do a little scrapbook oh my god i did not picture you as a scrapbook girl dilly that's
45:43because i'm not so there you go you're not going to be that joke why can't you make the scrapbook
45:49you've done so well you're ahead we're ahead for now but this is the time of day when we relax
45:55into
45:55it and we start slowing down we cannot lose the pace yes i'll do your scrapbook thank am i happy
46:00about
46:00it no right hurry up keep up the pace let's go she tasked me with it like it's a piece
46:08of cake and
46:09it's not i want it to be in order i want to label them a scrapbook is something you spend
46:14years making
46:16jerry told dilly that photos really help him with his memory so hopefully he'll always remember this
46:22process oh look at that i mean it's not my best work but i'm giving it a good guy they're
46:27gonna
46:27love this all these memories i love this family i love this family too with the living room unit fully
46:36constructed i'm just fitting the track system for the sliding artwork that's going to run across the
46:43face of this unit and a super-sized replica of jerry's poem painted and dried the piece of artwork
46:49that's on this sliding panel is inspired by jerry's artwork rob's vision is sliding into place this is
46:56the part of the build i was most worried about yes you've got tons of storage out here but this
47:02here
47:03is what makes this unit unique i'm proud of this next door i'm sorting the lighting in the brand new
47:11master bedroom trisha and jerry really wanted to move to the downstairs room where daniel was
47:17but they'd never gotten around to it so we've flipped the rooms and now i am
47:25putting some floating lamp shades here these little screws are always a bit fiddly but okay
47:33make sure i'm all lined up oh no why do they have to be the smallest screws in the world
47:42so now here's the easy bit put the lampshade on screw the light bulb in and bob's your uncle now
47:49let
47:50there be light
47:54in the newly completed utility ewan strikes while the iron's hot when irons build up a scorch mark
48:02like this i've got a really good little trick this packet of paracetamol cost me only 39p you want the
48:09iron hot enough that it melts the paracetamol tablet and then using a pair of tweezers i'm going to gently
48:16rub it over the scorch mark the active ingredients in the paracetamol are combining with the scorch mark
48:24to lift it off and remove it without doing any damage look at that it's kind of acting like a
48:30little baby rubber and then using a damp cloth i'm just going to quickly wipe off anything that's
48:37loosened as i go i'm delighted with that look at it certainly cheaper than buying a brand new iron
48:42as rob puts the final touches to the living room unit my drawer fronts are on i'll put the handles
48:48on three more to go and ewan perfects the beds that looks so much better there's just time to put
48:56the
48:56last pieces into place whoa let's go guys come on last room how amazing would it be on our first
49:04week
49:04back finish on time come on let's do it we can do it oh here placemats yeah is that really
49:12necessary

50:27space with sleek storage and hidden functions how fantastic behind this lovely curtain is your washing
50:35machine and tumble dryer so you can hide it when you want don't want to see it that's amazing
50:40steph yeah i know you love online shopping yeah this is for returns
50:44just to shove your returns in there shove your receipt in there and then you every time you walk out

55:48on the job
55:49our trust we gave they had free range just seven days to make the change to our family home so
