00:00Listen to Soames, maybe the nicest thing he does for Irene is he buys her the ballet slippers.
00:05I'm convinced we could be happy, but if you find we cannot,
00:09though God help me, I'll move heaven and earth to make us so,
00:12I will release you and you will be free.
00:18That's very generous.
00:19What meant more to her, do you think?
00:21Like the shoes and being seen or giving kind of the exit opportunity?
00:25She's so bewildered in that scene.
00:27At first she's like, oh, it's just like a really nice new friend that I've made
00:31and he's kind of made like such a beautiful impression of having an interest in my passion.
00:38In those days it was like, okay, you're a bit of a lady of the night if you like ballet.
00:44So I think the fact that this very prestigious man has taken an interest in it,
00:49it's kind of like, oh my gosh, I've never had this kind of reciprocation before about this.
00:53And then obviously the lead to the promises that he's making, it's like, I didn't expect,
00:58because she thinks that he fancies a mom, a stepmom, so this is like,
01:02there's so many emotions in that scene that it was just like, it was really fun to play.
01:06And Josh, do you think he was sincere when he made that promise initially?
01:10I think in the moment he was sincere, and it was only later on that he came to realize
01:13that the idea of losing her is untenable, that, you know, to the extent that he'll have to go back
01:18on that promise. But in that moment, I think he does mean what he says,
01:22and he is really just saying anything he has to say to get her to agree.
