Australia will halve the tax on fuel and diesel for three months in a push to bring down costs that have surged due to the US-Israeli war on Iran, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Monday (March 30).

00:14The halving of the fuel excise will reduce the cost of fuel by 26.3 cents per litre.
00:20Importantly, in addition, states and territories have agreed and are finalising a proposal
00:26to ensure they won't benefit from the elevated prices that are occurring because of the GST.
00:32The government will also pause the road user charge on heavy vehicles for the same three-month period.
00:38The fuel excise cut takes effect from Wednesday, April 1st, and will run until June 30th.
00:45The measures are expected to cost the government 2.55 billion Australian dollars, or about 7.8 billion ringgit.
