Type of NRVs

00:01Which type of check wall is suitable for vertical line?
00:04This is the most asked question by a process and a piping engineer.
00:08So let's see.
00:10The first is the non slam spring assisted check wall.
00:15This wall used in the vertical service.
00:18Disc moves up when the flow comes and disc comes down when the flow stops based on the spring action.
00:25So this wall is used only for the upward flow.
00:28It cannot be put in the downward flow direction.
00:31And not good for the dirty fluid or a slurry service because it can choke these springs.
00:36So it is only used for the clean services.
00:40Next is piston lift check wall.
00:43This wall gets the disc get lifted when the flow comes.
00:48And it sits down based on the spring action again.
00:52So this wall also can be used in vertical service but it is having a drawback of high pressure drop.
00:57It can be used in horizontal or vertical both position.
01:04Next is dual plate or a disc check wall.
01:08This fold when the flow comes because of the hinge it is attached here.
01:14And it gets closed when the flow stops like this.
01:17This is suitable for vertical flow, upward flow only.
01:20And it is used mostly when there is a space constraint.
01:24So this wall can be used when we have a space constraint in the line.
01:28These walls can be designed by API 6D and API 594.
01:34Next wall is a ball check wall which can be used for the vertical services or in vertical line.
01:40The ball slaps up when the flow comes and comes down when the flow stops.
01:46It is also used only in upward flow direction not in the downward.
01:50Best for the slurry or wastewater because this ball is always getting clean and it is mixing means in contact
01:58with the fluid.
01:59So it is getting cleaned.
02:00So self-cleaning is there and not good for the gas or high pressure services.
02:05And there is a small comparison for all the swing, dual plate, piston, spring arrested and ball wall.
02:11So you can compare based on this comparison you can select the best suitable wall for your service.
