00:02three months ago we set out on an epic mission to help solve the building crisis by building
00:09three houses in three months with three budgets using three different modern methods of construction
00:16and what an incredible journey it has been it's a dream come true thank you so much thank you
00:23two months on and we've got two houses to complete and my 3d printed house hasn't even
00:30got out of the ground yet this really is mission impossible welcome to the final episode and the
00:37reveal of future house look at this it feels fantastic tonight mate this is smart i love the
00:50color did you choose this i chose the color it's really nice our final home reveals how beautiful
00:56is this guys this this room is the size of our old house yeah pretty much and we take our
01:02families
01:03to the very top to pitch why their home should be australia's future house
01:10when we first set out on this mission to build australia's future house i had a very clear
01:15vision of what was needed if we really are going to experiment with new ways to make housing more
01:22affordable for australians we've got to try different things love the idea of having these
01:29beautiful concrete trees mixed in with a real tree and after months of painstaking paperwork
01:37yes i've finally got my da we got approval oh mate that's the best news i've had in years
01:44but i'm not even out of the ground yet so i have just four weeks left to get this build
01:50completed i
01:51think it's just like such a small amount of time jamming you know i know it's crazy i would i
01:56just
01:56want to i want to give it a red hot go this is my chance to build a house that
02:02makes a difference
02:03that i can be proud of and that stands for everything i believe in australia's future house
02:16finally it's day one game on and we're building the slab for our new home so now it's all about
02:27getting the site prepped for the concrete pour
02:31when i was thinking about putting this slab together i'm thinking what about all the stuff
02:36that goes inside the concrete slab and how sustainable could that be well i found a team
02:43who are actually doing 100 scrap metal reinforcing that company is infrabil in western sydney and the
02:52source of their final product has all come from recycled steel so this is where you harvest all the
02:59recycled materials yeah cars barbecues washing machines what yes they're all here they're all
03:05cut and processed and brought here for us to process them
03:12wow that is some serious heat
03:21wow the intensity of the heat here is absolutely incredible i've never seen anything like it
03:29we consume roughly about 2200 tons of recycled steel 2200 tons yes and 2200 yes and we produce roughly 2000
03:38tons of prime product
03:54and it's a great Australian story and it's a great Australian story and a very important part of our circular
04:02economy and it's going to reinforce my concrete slab
04:09well this is it the first load of 26 trucks to get into the space
04:15each truck holds about 7.5 cubic meters of concrete so that's about 460 tons of concrete that we'll be
04:23pouring today
04:24now for those of you who don't know concrete is responsible for around about 8 percent of the world's carbon
04:33emissions so we have to get smarter about the way that we construct concrete
04:40wholesome are rising to the challenge with a whole range of reduced carbon products
04:46now at the moment we're achieving with this eco-packed concrete somewhere between 30 and 60 percent reduced carbon
04:55but here's what's really exciting over in switzerland wholesome have been working on a 100 percent reduced carbon concrete which
05:04will be a game changer
05:05we as wholesome we've got an r&d facility now that's really working hard to make our concrete more sustainable
05:14lock pod by ARC is a fully recycled plastic product that helps reduce the amount of concrete consumed
05:22wow this is lock pod so this is all recycled this is all recycled
05:26so they hold your steel off the pods absolutely and in the concrete where your strength is sitting
05:31so you're not mucking around on site putting chairs in underneath
05:35this is genius it's really cool
05:37the great thing about this system is that it's not only recycled but it also makes the job faster
05:44the beauty of the lock pod system and you can see how this is working now is when the concrete
05:50comes into place
05:51these lock pods hold voids of air inside it and that reduces the amount of concrete that we have to
05:58put in the slab
05:58but it still maintains its structural integrity by allowing all these valleys to have the beams
06:05running through the slab so underneath when you turn it over it looks like a giant waffle
06:11and those beams running through are what give the slab structural and tensile strength
06:17these lock pods by ARC are 100% recycled plastic
06:23from landfill straight into here
06:26so if you think your recycling bin doesn't end up anywhere
06:30think again
06:31here's a great example of it
06:34fortunately our other two families have navigated their challenges
06:38with more speed and success than me
06:42the Fox family from the Blue Mountains, New South Wales
06:45built two modular homes so they can live on the same block and care for their disabled daughter Katelyn
06:51so here is where mummy's house is
06:54this is a bit strange isn't it
06:55because mummy's got a house and daddy's got a house
06:58and you must be Katelyn
06:59hi
07:00me and Helen
07:01we're in the process of separating so we want separate houses
07:05they chose their homes from high-tech modular
07:09and in just eight weeks have completed homes
07:13these are your two houses
07:14wow
07:15the future is this
07:18the future is you know modular housing
07:21but it hasn't all been smooth sailing
07:25you know it's not just moving house
07:27it's not just separating
07:28so financially
07:30I'm trying to do what I can
07:32sorry
07:34it's kind of emotional still
07:37you think your life's all set
07:41and then everything changes
07:44but then their dream became a reality
07:47very good
07:48it's so exciting
07:49oh now they're in place
07:52the houses look amazing
07:54you know we've got privacy between us
07:57they just look fantastic on the block
07:58and today they're moving into their separate modular homes
08:04carpet court were recently here
08:06installing sustainably sourced timber veneer floors in the two houses
08:10ready for the foxes and their daughter Katelyn to move in
08:18my dear are also here to install
08:20their energy efficient air conditioning
08:22the filter's very easy to clean
08:24and it pops straight out
08:25then take this outside
08:26give it a hose down
08:28pop back in
08:29little magnets
08:30switch catcher
08:32oh dog
08:33very easy
08:36he's switching first
08:37yeah of course
08:39over
08:39over there
08:40in that bedroom
08:44yeah I think it's a new chapter in life
08:46you know
08:46we're living by myself
08:47I haven't done that for a long long time
08:50and
08:51yeah
08:53once I get it all tidied up
08:54and cleaned up
08:55it should be good
08:59you right guys
09:00it's still
09:01not hit me yet
09:02I think
09:02it's still quite surreal
09:04it's nice to actually say
09:05it's something that's yours
09:06not in a selfish way
09:08but just in a
09:09I'm just really grateful
09:10to have my own place
09:12and yeah
09:13to say that it is mine
09:14it's just nice
09:14yeah
09:20in Canberra
09:20the Cochini family home
09:22is nearing completion
09:23and Sarah
09:24is keen to see
09:25how things are going
09:26the front door
09:27has just come up
09:28beautifully
09:29I love it
09:30and I think
09:31the handles that Sean made
09:32have just set it off
09:33beautifully
09:35I love that entryway
09:37that we have
09:38and my plan
09:39is to put family photos
09:40along one of the walls
09:41in there
09:41so I think it'll just be
09:42such a lovely
09:43focus point
09:44coming into the
09:45the main area
09:46I guess
09:48I love the
09:50kitchen
09:50so our blue kitchen
09:51my beautiful ovens
09:52the two Asco ovens
09:54that we selected
09:55are ideal
09:56I work a lot of evenings
09:57and nights
09:58so it makes things
09:59a lot easier for Sean
09:59who does a lot of the cooking
10:00the things I love the most
10:02so far are the bathrooms
10:03I really love how the tiles
10:05have come up
10:06exactly how
10:06we pictured in our heads
10:08which is really exciting
10:11coming up
10:12the 3D printed columns
10:14for our home
10:14spring to life
10:17yes
10:17but time is running out
10:20we've lost a day
10:21we could have had
10:22all this done
10:22and the big day arrives
10:24at the big house
10:26everyone's the winner
10:26whose home will be chosen
10:28as Australia's future house
10:37future house is about
10:38building homes faster
10:39and building sustainably
10:42water management
10:43is a huge part of that
10:45in Canberra
10:47Kingspan are delivering
10:48a water tank for Sean
10:49at the brand new
10:50Cochini family home
10:52alright
10:52well what I like about Sean
10:54is he's always thinking
10:55about the sustainability space
10:57so we've got our
10:58Kingspan water tank here
10:595,000 litres
11:01all of this 5,000 litres
11:03goes straight into the garden
11:04where it's needed most
11:06now that is circular economy
11:08I like your thinking Sean
11:10in my opinion
11:11every house in Australia
11:13needs a rainwater tank
11:15and because we're on a farm
11:16I want to be as
11:17self-sufficient as possible
11:19so this is the whole tank
11:21we have no town water
11:22so it's all about
11:24whatever we can harvest
11:25I thought it just
11:26like came off a truck
11:27and just went in
11:28no so that would be
11:29like a poly
11:30or one of the urban ones
11:31because they're built
11:32in a warehouse
11:33and then delivered to site
11:34as like a whole tank
11:35whereas these ones
11:36are all constructed on site
11:41mate this looks good
11:42this is three hours work
11:45I love the colour
11:47and this is one
11:48of my favourite features
11:50here you've got
11:50your frog flat
11:51so that stops your
11:53vermin getting in
11:54did you call that
11:55a frog flat?
11:56yeah
11:57clearly to stop frogs
11:58getting in there
11:59literally yeah
11:59you know I have frogs
12:00in every toilet here
12:02exactly
12:02big green tree frogs
12:03so at least you won't
12:03get them in your tank
12:04yeah yeah
12:05look at him
12:06isn't he beautiful
12:07yay
12:08now I've got the tank
12:10all I need now
12:11is a house
12:12to connect it to
12:15and I've got three weeks
12:16to get it all done
12:20I have to say
12:22we are seriously
12:24up against it
12:25the other two homes
12:27have been completed
12:28in full
12:29we've only just
12:31laid our slab
12:32and our 3D printer
12:33has only just arrived
12:34so we've got five days
12:36to print 28 concrete
12:38tree columns
12:39then we've got to
12:40wrap the whole thing
12:41in formwork
12:42build a concrete roof
12:43over the top of it
12:44put all the doors
12:45and windows in place
12:47then do the kitchen
12:48then tile it
12:48then gyprock
12:49then lights
12:50and all the rest
12:51and all that's got to
12:52happen in the next
12:53three weeks
12:55keep in mind
12:55no one's ever built
12:57a forest of concrete
12:58trees and then put
12:59a roof on top
12:59this is the second ever
13:013D printed house
13:02in Australia
13:03if we pull this off
13:05it will not only
13:06be a world first
13:07but it might just
13:08set a benchmark
13:09for the future
13:10of building houses
13:17the contour 3D
13:18printing machine
13:19is now on site
13:20and the crew
13:21are setting it up
13:22but there's a problem
13:23with the way
13:24the 3D printing machine
13:25has been configured
13:27there's not even
13:28a slab here
13:29it's the latest on
13:30so this is impossible
13:34at the moment
13:35this machine
13:36has only been set up
13:38to do the two front
13:39walls
13:39and six pillars
13:41out the front
13:42on an area
13:43that we don't even
13:44have concrete on yet
13:45so this
13:46this machine
13:47is redundant
13:49unless we can
13:50reprogram it
13:51to shoot the hobs
13:52that we've already done
13:54Nick and his team
13:55from contour 3D
13:56have just arrived
13:57just in the nick
13:59of time
13:59oh my god
14:00he's here
14:01we got it
14:02it's a trick
14:03good to see you
14:04how are you mate
14:05good
14:06printing 18
14:07and after a discussion
14:07about the issues
14:08and severe time
14:09constraints we're facing
14:10we've decided
14:11to change tack
14:13you're printing 18
14:14of them in the studio
14:15we are
14:16tonight and tomorrow
14:17yep
14:17while the rest of this
14:19is being printed here
14:19so we've got two printers
14:20going at the same time
14:21correct
14:21that'll speed things up
14:23yep
14:23how about I duck back
14:24to Sydney
14:25I'll oversee those 18
14:26okay
14:26you oversee this on site
14:28I'm in
14:28and we'll divide and conquer
14:29perfect done
14:30alright
14:31the future of our house
14:33is in your hands
14:34Nico
14:35no pressure
14:35no pressure mate
14:36we'll get it done
14:53mate
14:53welcome back
14:54this is awesome
14:55it's getting there
14:56you made it happen
14:58look at this
14:59woo
15:03it's working
15:05you guys are amazing
15:09ha ha ha
15:11yes
15:15how are you Jamie
15:16you're actually printing
15:17we are finally printing
15:18mate that's amazing
15:19yeah
15:19and you're printing
15:20all these things
15:21as one group
15:22correct
15:23so the way
15:24why
15:24so we can actually
15:26print it faster now
15:27because we have
15:27a longer lap length
15:28so now we can actually
15:29go faster than if we were
15:30to do one column at a time
15:31one two three four five
15:34correct
15:35yeah
15:35so now we can do about five
15:36in about five hours
15:37otherwise each column
15:38will probably take about
15:39two hours each
15:40otherwise
15:40wow
15:41that's a good idea
15:43it's all about
15:43who thought of that
15:44that was Mehdi's idea
15:45Mehdi
15:46come over here mate
15:47Mehdi's the mastermind
15:48behind that
15:49the crazy professor
15:51that's a really good idea
15:52yeah
15:52how do we cut them apart
15:54do we just get a piece of wire
15:55or what are we doing
15:57that's
15:58this
15:59hang on
16:00all this technology
16:01and you want to use
16:03a six dollar ninety saw
16:05from Bunnings
16:05the cheapest from Bunnings
16:07the cheapest you can buy
16:08Jamie I think you should have a go
16:10cutting one of the columns
16:11oh there you go
16:11absolutely yeah
16:13so am I doing this the right way
16:15yep that's perfect
16:18yep
16:18always let the saw
16:19do the work
16:22so this
16:22this is good
16:24it's working
16:26another three hours
16:27and you're done
16:28so once these columns
16:30are separated
16:30they'll be trucked
16:31from Sydney
16:32to Bangalow
16:33positioned individually
16:34on the slab
16:35at the farm
16:36and then filled with concrete
16:38to support the roof
16:39of our new home
16:40so we're going to run
16:41through the night
16:41for you Jamie
16:42you really are
16:43yep
16:43we're hoping to have
16:44probably 10 to 15
16:45done by the morning
16:46no way
16:46and then we'll start
16:47all over again
16:47tomorrow morning
16:48oh my
16:49the commitment
16:50and the determination
16:52of these Contour 3D guys
16:53just blows me away
16:55thank you man
16:56yeah all these guys
16:57are putting their hard yards in
16:59that's awesome
17:03the Cuccini family's
17:04Canberra home
17:05was built
17:06using a precast
17:07concrete walling system
17:08a system called
17:10ResiCast
17:11that caught the attention
17:12of one of Australia's
17:13biggest building companies
17:15the Campbell Property Group
17:16owners of Clarendon
17:18and Domain Homes
17:19today has proven
17:20that it's got some potential
17:21so yeah
17:23we're going to have a go
17:23we're going to put one up
17:25over in Broussville
17:26and let's see
17:28how we go
17:30so today
17:31they're putting the ResiCast system
17:33to the test
17:34on their own site
17:35in Western Sydney
17:37all of the concrete walls
17:38for the home
17:39are precast
17:40in a factory
17:41and then trucked
17:42to the site
17:44it's just all about
17:46understanding
17:46whether we can do this
17:47at volume
17:48how much time saving
17:50we have
17:50and whether or not
17:51you know
17:52there's other cost benefits
17:53involved
17:55yeah
17:56Nick how are you mate
17:57good mate
17:57good
17:58Nick and his team
17:59from ResiCast
18:00are on site
18:01to supervise
18:03the install
18:04excited
18:04very excited
18:06the anticipation
18:07of there
18:08and all the things
18:09that you look at
18:09potentially could go wrong
18:11we're hoping nothing goes wrong
18:13now the Campbell Property Group
18:15builds
18:161,500 homes
18:18per year
18:18and if Mixed ResiCast
18:20system works
18:21it will allow them
18:22to build a home
18:23in four months
18:24not eight
18:25here's your reality
18:26so this is old school
18:27bricks and stick
18:28brick veneer
18:28is what we call it
18:29so these guys
18:30have been going
18:30probably five months
18:31and they're not even
18:32at lock up at the moment
18:33possibly
18:33but you can see
18:35like the trade waste
18:36how slow it is
18:37you turn around here
18:38and we've got a couple
18:39of panels in
18:39in 20 minutes
18:40you know
18:40so it's a big difference
18:41out in the sun
18:42going hard
18:43poor buggers
18:46that's got to go
18:47a long way
18:48to providing a solution
18:49for our building crisis
18:51certainly a very viable concept
18:53because of the pace
18:56but then
18:57Mick has spotted
18:58a big problem
18:59one of the panels
19:00is not the correct height
19:01which means the measurements
19:03are incorrect
19:05very important
19:08two approval stages
19:09you've got very important
19:10improvement
19:11before they're made
19:13so just trying
19:13to find out
19:14what went wrong
19:19which doesn't happen
19:20very often
19:24never
19:25never has this happened
19:26never
19:29someone's changed it
19:30but yeah
19:31no reason
19:31like
19:42now i've been working
19:43with a team
19:44that have reinvented
19:45the way that kitchen
19:46design and install
19:47works
19:47making a dream kitchen
19:49more affordable
19:50g'day luke
19:51jamie
19:52how are you mate
19:52good to meet you mate
19:53yeah nice to see you too
19:54yeah
19:54oh you've got quite the outfit here
19:56this is huge
19:57yeah it's a busy workshop
19:58it's all happening
19:59great mate
19:59it's awesome
20:00this time of year
20:01christmas
20:01everyone wants their kitchens here
20:02i can imagine
20:03in fact
20:04i'm probably the most annoying
20:05customer around
20:06i'm like
20:07i need it now
20:08and i need it cheap
20:09and i need it
20:10i need it quickly
20:11at macon kitchens
20:12you design your own kitchen
20:13and then it gets delivered
20:15as a flat pack
20:16luke how does your model work
20:17because you don't necessarily install do you
20:20no we don't do any installation
20:21but you're like a one-stop shop
20:23yeah
20:23where you come in
20:24customers diy their own design
20:27that's it
20:28we cut it
20:28flat pack it
20:29ready to go
20:30and then it just arrives on site
20:32and really
20:33most capable carpenters
20:35or joiners
20:36can put kitchens together
20:38yeah
20:40so this is your kitchen here
20:41yeah okay
20:42great
20:43and to keep myself out of trouble
20:45i'm bringing in the better half
20:47the love of my life
20:49meeks
20:49have you got a minute to facetime
20:52sure
20:53because if i make kitchen decisions
20:55without you
20:55i'm sure i'm going to be divorced again
20:58you know you have to be married
21:00to get divorced
21:01that's true actually yeah
21:03we should book in that wedding
21:04at some point
21:07you talked about having the oven
21:09underneath the cooktop
21:11correct
21:12so is that where you want it
21:14yeah
21:14that's where i was thinking
21:15this is just a workbench
21:17yeah
21:17yeah so if it's a workbench hun
21:19i'd leave
21:20i'd put shelves in it
21:21and i'd leave it open
21:23so that you can put saucepans
21:25and like chopping boards
21:26on that side
21:27near the stove
21:28where you cook
21:29and you can bring that up on top there
21:31all right
21:32you happy
21:33yes
21:33i'm happy
21:34great
21:35all right
21:35all right
21:36sell some records
21:37we need the money
21:42it's a big day in western sydney
21:44mick's resi-cast concrete construction system
21:47is being put to the test
21:49by one of australia's biggest building companies
21:52but mick's really worried
21:54that an error
21:55has been made in the approval stage
21:57yeah they're dropping the garage here
21:59which is fine
22:01but the panel size shouldn't have changed
22:04so they've missed it on the approvals
22:08yeah something we haven't come across in all these years to be honest
22:11but we'll fix it
22:13we're all about solutions you know
22:21the solution is to dig down 80 mil
22:24so the walls are the same height
22:27so we can get on to
22:28the top plates and trusses now
22:30which is good
22:35i think it's been an outstanding day
22:37for the challenges we've faced
22:39my fault for getting
22:40a little bit of engineering wrong there
22:42missing by 75 mil
22:44but we're able to rectify it
22:45which was great
22:48we didn't expect it all to go smoothly
22:50there were lots that we learned along the way
22:53just to get to this point
22:54i'm sure that there'll be lots we learned today as well
23:07so we're at lock-up today
23:09so we're day 18 today
23:11i've got to say i'm pretty amazed
23:12at the progress that's been made
23:14does it have potential?
23:15absolutely
23:25the 3d printer that will print columns for our new home has been set up
23:29okay cool
23:31the contour printing guys have been working all night
23:35jack
23:35hi
23:36shiway
23:37hey
23:38you've been up all night haven't you?
23:40up all night
23:41yeah
23:41good effort lads
23:42you did it
23:44you did it
23:44look at that
23:45mate she's a beauty
23:46the sun just came up
23:48and we have a wall
23:51mate you may just be crazier than me
23:54no way
23:55it's not to aspire to
23:56well we've got one column printed here on the farm
23:59but unfortunately the machine has suffered some mechanical problems
24:03but no worries because nick's boys are in sydney
24:06and they've also been burning the midnight oil
24:10ash sent that last night
24:11no way
24:12yeah
24:13there you go
24:13that's all of them
24:15yeah
24:15pretty much
24:16that's the whole house
24:17pretty much
24:18yeah
24:18wow mate
24:20well today is the 1st of december
24:24that means it's the first day of summer
24:25it also means we're 15 days away from our strict completion date
24:31and i know i might find this hard to believe
24:34but all of this has to be completed
24:35roof on top
24:37wrap it full of windows
24:38tile on the floors
24:40kitchen go in
24:41joinery
24:42cupboards
24:43some would say this is impossible
24:45but this is future house
24:47we're testing new theories here
24:49the positive point about this is
24:51that this morning
24:53at 8am
24:54all of the concrete tree columns
24:56that are going over the top of these pink sleeves here
25:00left sydney
25:01now if those columns don't arrive on time
25:04and on budget
25:07the whole thing will fall over
25:08like a stack of dominoes
25:11the columns are on their way
25:13yeah
25:13so it was christmas
25:15the truck was supposed to leave at 5
25:17and it left at 8
25:19but they're saying they're going to be here by 5
25:22well the truck was late
25:24but it did get here eventually
25:25every hour is crucial
25:27which means things are getting very tense
25:30if anything goes wrong
25:32it'll be your fault mate
25:34your fault
25:35let's come down mate
25:36at least they've got someone to blame
25:38my builder erin
25:39the first 3d column to be positioned on site
25:45gets craned in
25:47and she's airborne
25:48alright here we go
25:49first column coming in
25:52looking good mate
25:55don't get underneath it
25:58how you feeling ez
25:59first column coming in
26:00oh look just nerves obviously
26:02but it's a little bit of relief as well
26:04yeah
26:07it's a very exciting moment
26:09it's a bit time consuming
26:11a bit finicky
26:11but once we get this right
26:13we'll have a system
26:14and we'll flow it all the way through
26:15tree columns
26:16here we come
26:21well they look magnificent
26:23even better in real life
26:25I hadn't imagined
26:26they'd be this monolithic
26:27but what's beautiful about this
26:30is you can really start to see
26:32this shape now
26:33at the base
26:34where I've tapered out the base
26:36just like the buttress root of a fig tree
26:38where it comes out at the base here
26:41and then as it reaches the ceiling
26:43it flares out again
26:44to take the weight of the ceiling
26:46and that is really just
26:48me following nature's principles
26:51of basic natural engineering
26:53it really is
26:55just a beautiful feeling
26:59okay back to reality
27:01and back to the build
27:03the stress is real
27:04I have never seen this many guys
27:06on one site
27:07we've got probably 12 carpenters
27:10doing all the form work
27:11up on the top deck
27:13five or six steel workers
27:14down here doing the central deck
27:17concrete is back here
27:18doing the spray concrete
27:19on the pool
27:20I don't know whether anyone's
27:22ever pulled this off before
27:23but we're building a house
27:24in a month
27:25with a concrete slab
27:27on the base
27:273D printed walls
27:29and columns
27:29and a concrete slab
27:31on top
27:31and we've got
27:3311 days left
27:35it'll be a miracle
27:36if we pull this off
27:37but it'll
27:39it'll be exciting too
27:44while I've been struggling
27:46with my build
27:47on the northern rivers
27:47the foxes
27:48have called me to say
27:49that they've actually
27:50moved in
27:51so I'm popping in
27:53to see their new home

32:45installed
32:46and the focus
32:47has now shifted
32:48to the roof
32:48hundreds of tons
32:50of reduced carbon
32:51concrete
32:52are all going to
32:53be pumped up here
32:53and all of the
32:55responsibility for
32:56the poor

33:25matt believes
33:25the form work
33:26at the top of the
33:27columns needs
33:28stronger support
33:29collars
33:29and he's worried
33:30that any break
33:31or leak
33:32could be
33:33catastrophic
33:35that's it mate
33:36that's my reputation

33:48you know like
33:48air conditioning ducting
33:49you can use
33:49that's a great idea
33:51yeah

34:41180 cubes
34:42of concrete
34:43and then we can
34:44pull down all of
34:46this formwork
34:47and then actually
34:48start on the
34:48interiors
34:49hopefully
34:50by this time
34:51tomorrow night
34:52we're gonna have
34:53a roof
34:55almost every
34:56concreter and
34:56form worker on
34:57the northern rivers
34:58has rocked up
34:59to help out
35:00there you go mate
35:02it's unbelievable
35:03how fast this
35:05happens
35:05i think every
35:06tippy on the
35:07northern rivers
35:07mate was here
35:08yesterday
35:09oh mate it was
35:10incredible wasn't it
35:11wasn't it mate
35:11i've never seen
35:12a community rally
35:14together like this
35:15mate we all sing
35:16together our beer
35:16mate i am eternally
35:18grateful
35:21there's one thing
35:22i've learned with
35:23the increase of
35:24extreme weather
35:24i've learned that
35:26any future house in
35:27australia needs to
35:28be resilient
35:30i'm taking a quick
35:31break from the
35:32madness to chat
35:33with lily from
35:34suncorp about why
35:35we need to think
35:36more about
35:37resilience when
35:38building or
35:39renovating
35:40nice to see you
35:40lily
35:41we're essentially
35:43building the most
35:45resilient
35:46fireproof
35:48future-proofed
35:49home
35:49it's amazing
35:50a home's
35:51resilience depends
35:52entirely on how
35:54it can withstand
35:55extreme weather
35:56and suncorp have
35:57developed cutting-edge
35:58technology that
36:00tracks dangerous
36:01climatic conditions
36:02like storms
36:03cyclones
36:04floods
36:05and even fires
36:06how would mums and
36:08dads approach
36:09building a resilient
36:11home
36:11it's a really good
36:12question i think
36:13you know haven
36:14you can type in
36:16this into the
36:17free app your
36:18address
36:18resilience when
36:20renovating is
36:20things like what's
36:21the picture of your
36:22roof what's the
36:23material makeup
36:24and you know it's
36:25also important to
36:26understand what are
36:27the types of natural
36:28hazards that you are
36:29prone to
36:30lily i've got a
36:31two-year-old and a
36:33four-year-old i'm
36:34obviously concerned
36:35for their safety and
36:36their future so i'm
36:38building the most
36:38resilient home i
36:39possibly can
36:40if i've got an
36:41option to do
36:42something that makes
36:43my home more
36:44resilient i'm leaning
36:45into it yeah good
36:46on you me too
36:52one thing that's not
36:53going on to our new
36:54concrete roof is solar
36:55panels because we're
36:57building a solar farm
36:58on our farm it looks
37:00like uh something
37:02sitting on the surface
37:03of mars
37:04it is isn't it very
37:05much so so you'll be
37:06capturing the sun all
37:08day this is going to
37:09bring me 150 kilowatts
37:11a day exactly right so
37:12we're doing two sig
37:14energy 50 kilowatt hour
37:15stacks with 230 kilowatt
37:17inverters so what does
37:18that mean essentially all
37:20this power that's being
37:21produced from your
37:22panels is going to go
37:23straight up to your
37:23batteries we're not
37:25going to have any loss
37:26from the power because
37:27it's going dc into the
37:28dc batteries right so
37:30we're maximizing
37:31everything the rest of
37:33it goes back through the
37:35amber electric program
37:36back into the grid
37:38exactly and i'm selling
37:39that when the grid needs
37:41it the most so what do
37:42you reckon i'm going to
37:42make per year off this
37:44ballpark give me a guess
37:46you've installed plenty of
37:48these let's say a trip to
37:50thailand every year
37:51a 10 day trip to thailand
37:52every year no way
37:54potential you've got the
37:55definitely you've got the
37:56potential and the
37:57potential to add more
37:58later to gain more
38:00a new solar and battery
38:01system is certainly going
38:03to be popular in our
38:04house when it comes to
38:08powering household energy
38:09needs and selling energy
38:11back to the grid i've
38:12heard about a couple
38:13bevan james who is
38:15shifting it up a gear
38:16literally do you have
38:19any bills anymore any
38:20energy bills no bills
38:21no bills and you're
38:23making a profit no fuel
38:24station and you're
38:26charging your car and
38:27the car is charging the
38:28battery yes which is a
38:30very new thing right
38:31well yes so what we've
38:33got in our side in store
38:34system is the world's
38:35first integrated battery
38:37and ev charger system so
38:39this little module here
38:40is a dc ev charger 25
38:42kilowatts so basically
38:44the guys can just plug
38:45this into their car and
38:46charge it from the
38:47batteries from the solar
38:48from the grid yeah it's
38:49a fast charger as well so
38:51you can get up to 150
38:52kilometers of range in one
38:53hour that's so good
38:55isn't it and i didn't
38:56think you could get an
38:57f-150 that's electric
38:59electric what makes this
39:01so special so this was
39:03the first bi-directional
39:04approved car in australia
39:07possibly globally right
39:08um so a big battery and
39:10then that can power the
39:11house or it can feed back
39:12to the grid i'm loving
39:14this technology because
39:15this is kind of future
39:16proofing everything it is
39:23i'm back in canberra to see
39:25my favorite young family the
39:27quichinis their resi cast
39:29home has just been finished
39:30and i cannot wait to see it
39:32hey guys hello hey mate i
39:35thought i'd bring you a
39:36little new south wales come
39:37on in and because it's
39:39christmas here's a christmas
39:40bush beautiful thank you how
39:42are you mate good to see you
39:44how are you sarah good nice
39:45to see you too hello april how
39:48are you do you like your new
39:50house how beautiful is this
39:53guys i have to say it's
39:55amazing
39:58this is my first opportunity
40:00to see how this home made
40:02from precast concrete slabs
40:04performs as a functional space
40:06for a family to live in
40:09you've got to be happy very
40:11happy i mean the detail the
40:12lighting the volume and the
40:14space the space like it's
40:17really great it is it's come
40:19out i think better than we
40:21had hoped yeah better than we
40:22could have possibly pictured
40:23yeah it's just it's perfect i
40:25think this this room is the
40:27size of our old house yeah
40:28pretty much
40:38check it out this is great
40:41come on you know what i think
40:42it works yeah i'm very happy
40:44with it well you know i think
40:46because you kind of did this
40:47wainscot thing where you brought
40:49the tile up halfway and then the
40:52top of it is all the botanicals
40:53yes and the two of them go really
40:55well together so i think this
40:57really works and i have to say
40:59the mirror looks fantastic with the
41:01light behind it it's great it kind
41:03of has a bit of a 60s vibe to it
41:05right it's very bougie i mean even
41:07the basins match the tile and the
41:10bit of green in the back there
41:11yeah it's all come up just as i
41:13pictured it in my head go you
41:14always nice okay you yeah
41:16bedroom yes come and see okay let's
41:18go
41:19come and have a look look at this
41:21you can bounce on the bed you can
41:23yeah jump on the bed
41:25help
41:27hey this has got plenty of space
41:29yeah it's beautiful fan above yes
41:31you guys don't muck around do you
41:33let's bolt down the actual timeline
41:36from panels flying in day one we're
41:39we're end of week 10 so 10 weeks and
41:42the whole house is done yeah and may i
41:45ask how long was the da process 16 17
41:49weeks so almost twice as long as it took
41:51to build the house yeah yeah not uncommon
41:54whereas this is built to last you know
41:57100 years for sure yeah no one will be
42:00renovating this in a hurry i can tell
42:01you that not in the next two
42:03generations that's for sure that's one
42:05of the biggest assets about resi cast i
42:07think it is such a permanent dwelling
42:09yes you've got that solid exterior
42:12structure that's load-bearing that's
42:14holding the whole roof up and then all
42:16of these internal walls are non-load
42:17bearing but they're providing the
42:19insulation and of course the soft
42:21furnishings if you like Sarah and
42:24Sean have been passionate about
42:26creating an environmentally friendly
42:28sustainable off-grid home and they get a
42:31big tick from me and you know what you
42:34can see your solar passive orientation
42:37working beautifully because look at that
42:39Sun pouring in you can see the shadow
42:41right here and in winter when the Sun
42:44drops it's going to be even more very
42:47clever well done mate and then you
42:49couple that with double glazed windows
42:53energy-efficient appliances energy
42:55efficient air conditioner heated floors
42:58run through the Stiebel Elfron heat pump
43:00then you've got your solar system on the
43:02roof with your sig energy batteries you
43:05can't get any greener than this so I
43:07think this is about as green as you can
43:09possibly get you guys do well you
43:12couldn't have got any better this is
43:14great
43:26there's only two days to go before this
43:28home needs to be finished I've never
43:31been on a more chaotic site it is
43:34literally all hands on deck now I know
43:36this looks unachievable but we're going
43:38to give this everything we've got and
43:40push as hard as we can you guys hungry
43:42can we pull it off I'll let you be the
43:45judge
43:49amid the chaos and mayhem carpet court are
43:53calmly doing what they do best and
43:55that's to provide and install beautiful
43:58floor coverings my architectural plan has
44:02always been to wrap this home in glass in
44:04order to capture these stunning panoramic
44:07valley views
44:08Matty
44:09G'day mate
44:10what a job mate
44:11what a job
44:12mate you've only been here two days
44:13two and a half days and we're about 80%
44:15complete
44:16and Dow windows are installing the latest
44:18double glazed thermally broken windows
44:21and dual glazed louvers
44:23so would this be the first house in
44:25Australia to ever use this double glazed
44:27louver
44:28this is 100% the first house in Australia
44:31the world basically to do this
44:33paraflow dual blade louver
44:35right and then to match with the double
44:37glazed glass in here you're going to get the
44:38same
44:38yeah acoustics and thermal pulleys all the
44:41way through the one bank of windows
44:42five meter bank of windows
44:43I think this is probably one of the best
44:45pieces of innovation that I've seen come
44:47out of the window industry in Australia
44:49I've also teamed up with Eufy to install
44:52the latest cutting-edge AI security to
44:57make sure my family's safe and not just from
44:59those medicine cows have a look at this this is our brand new Eufy security system 4k HD man that's
45:10television quality that's good right yeah you're laughing beautiful but this will make makes feel very safe the best thing
45:18about these cameras is that they sort of work together to give you that full 360 degree view of your
45:24house yeah if you do have someone that approaches the property from the front yeah and they sort of walk
45:29in the front of the front of the front of the front of the front of the house
45:29walk around the house the cameras are going to pull on the whole way around oh right it's motion control
45:34correct yes no way yeah yeah but do you want sirens going off every time the dog runs through it
45:41no you don't but that's where our artificial intelligence software comes in there's some really smart facial recognition software in
45:48these cameras that sort of detects the difference between animal and a human but they also and more importantly can
45:56detect a friend or a foe
45:58so be warned little cows i've got my eyes on you
46:05the team from macon kitchen are doing an incredible job
46:08our flat pack kitchen is being assembled by the boss himself
46:13luke
46:14but you don't normally come out to sites right
46:16not generally
46:16this is a special occasion
46:18thank you mate i appreciate it
46:20mate it looks absolutely beautiful
46:22i love the colour
46:23i love the combination
46:25it's dark it's moody it's sophisticated it's really nice
46:30Liam
46:31Jamie
46:31how are you mate
46:32very well thank you
46:33you got it here
46:34well done
46:35beautiful stuff
46:36this is a steeple eltron 13.2
46:38the latest hydronic heat pump
46:40amazing
46:40but what does it physically do
46:42it takes that that temperature from the air
46:44yes
46:45and then converts that how
46:46yeah it's using a refrigeration circuit
46:48similar to the idea of a reverse cycle air conditioner
46:52by using an air to water we have the benefits of the higher temperatures during summer
46:55averaged out with the winter temperatures to give a similar output throughout the year
46:59right
46:59this does this by transferring heat heated water or cooled water through the slab or through
47:04radiators
47:05yeah
47:05yeah
47:05allows the nice comfortable temperature rather than inconsistent fans and coolers blowing
47:10around the place
47:11brilliant stuff
47:12great technology
47:13awesome savings
47:15and i think an idea that the rest of australia could use
47:21beautiful
47:22so this is true grid
47:23yep
47:24mate i love it
47:25basically what the tile is designed to do
47:27is to actually hold the load
47:28it's a surface stabilisation solution
47:30right
47:31so it can replace concrete or asphalt
47:33or any number of different things
47:35yeah
47:35the beauty of true grid
47:37is that once these cells have been put in place
47:39and you fill it full of soil
47:41then you simply lay the turf
47:43straight over the top of it
47:45and no more concrete
47:47more greenery
47:48less runoff
47:50and beautiful driveways
47:52this has to be australia's next driveway
47:55then i take the opportunity
47:58hello champion
47:59to duck into lismore
48:00to my favourite vintage furniture store
48:02oh
48:03how good are they
48:04oh mate that's magic
48:06beautiful isn't it
48:07absolutely magic
48:08done
48:09but i reckon this is perfect
48:10the kids will love this
48:12this is good
48:14how comfy is it
48:15this is beautiful
48:17once again
48:18be a legend
48:19thank you man
48:27all right here she comes
48:29this is a beautiful
48:30seven metre high
48:31majestic
48:32sylvester palm
48:33drought tolerant
48:35very robust
48:36these will be
48:37the perfect flags
48:39either side of the pool
48:40here
48:40as you're looking out
48:42framing this gorgeous valley view
48:44it's got a really nice bend
48:46i just need it to
48:48yeah i just need to lean it away
48:49from the house a little bit
48:50that's going to be a cracker of a tree
48:52absolutely
48:59future house
49:00is all about solving the housing crisis
49:04in this very special event
49:06we've brought our three families
49:07and their builders
49:09all the way here to the steps of parliament house
49:12in canberra
49:13where their houses will be critiqued
49:15by the ceo of the green building council of australia
49:18devina rooney
49:19and our federal minister for housing and homelessness
49:23the honourable claire o'neill
49:25two influential leaders
49:27in our housing debate
49:29and two people
49:30who can really make a difference
49:37i bet you didn't think you'd be standing here at parliament house
49:42this is a really special day
49:44these guys have worked very very hard
49:46and they've built some incredible houses
49:48we are so excited
49:50we've been following along with the journeys of these incredible families
49:53well i think we should get along with this critique shall we
49:57well we wanted to start with what we enjoyed so much about each of your houses
50:01with the jury's house
50:03the jury's are doing something very special and important
50:07a stunning house for your family
50:09and i love your pioneering spirit
50:11it takes a jamie jury to do something no one's ever done before
50:15break new ground
50:16shake this thing up
50:17and you've absolutely nailed that
50:18yeah thank you
50:19the fox family
50:20there was so many great things you did
50:22a complex family journey
50:24and bringing in a couple of buildings on the site that was so efficient
50:28the thing i loved as well was the dollars
50:31building a house in this country is far too expensive for the majority of australians
50:35and wrecks your design it's a really accessible thing for lots of australian families
50:39thank you
50:40and the kachinis like we're in canberra's beautiful home what a great property
50:45and the thing that we loved most was the way that you use the natural environment and built an australian
50:50house for australia and that's really cool
50:52and so much thought went into your highly efficient fully electric your solar your battery very impressed
51:01so it was really hard for us to choose a winner
51:04i fell in love with everyone but i had to call it
51:18our three families and their builders have come to parliament house in canberra
51:22as federal housing minister claire o'neill and the ceo of the green building council of australia
51:27davina rooney are about to decide which of our three houses is australia's future house
51:34so it was really hard for us to choose a winner
51:36i fell in love with everyone but i had to call it
51:41the fox family
51:43oh my gosh
51:46showing that sustainability didn't have to cost the earth
51:49i couldn't have said it better myself up top love that
51:52guys congratulations thank you very much
51:54we've got three revolutionary amazing systems
51:59how do we ensure that prefab construction can be funded through more banks and more financial institutions
52:05because at the moment we've kind of only got one doing it
52:08i think the commonwealth bank has shown massive leadership here and the finance really matters
52:13and we've got to give combank a bit of credit there
52:15thank you so much for your time ladies it's been amazing
52:18we loved it
52:19we loved it
52:20happy to do
52:22well congratulations rex and team high tech
52:25although it's true that all of our houses were off-grid capable
52:29innovative sustainable fast to build
52:32high tech gave us the fastest and lowest cost per square meter
52:39well this is it the last day of the build
52:42and only four days till christmas
52:44i actually can't believe it myself
52:47this is what four weeks can build
52:50with the right team of course
52:52and i have to say i am beyond grateful
52:54for the incredible amount of passion
52:57expertise and skill
52:59that's come out of this northern rivers local building community
53:03i've made some great friends
53:04i've met some incredible characters
53:06and i'm really proud of what we've achieved
53:08this is a concrete home concrete slab concrete roof and 3d printed concrete columns in fact the second in australia
53:17and we've got some incredible environmental engineering that's gone into it 70% reduced carbon concrete
53:23australia's first dual glazed louvers
53:26there's some innovation in here that will absolutely blow you away
53:30and sure we're not quite there yet there's a few tiles to go on there's a few lights to go
53:35in the place and it's going to be a busy summer
53:38however the bones of the house are here and it is absolutely extraordinary
53:43and of course amika and the kids haven't seen this at all
53:48amika's been down in sydney taking care of the kids
53:52whilst i've been on this crusade

56:16but unfortunately buried under bureaucratic red tape
56:20we've found families at breaking point
56:22as they try to realise their building dream
56:25we've also discovered a world of innovative companies
56:28building techniques and products
56:30that are doing great things for the environment
56:32and for building across australia
56:35companies like combank
56:37who are the first major bank
56:38to finance prefab
56:40during its off-site construction
56:42it's a game changer
56:43have we solved the building crisis
