In the 1997 television movie The Love Bug, down-on-his-luck racer Hank Cooper (Bruce Campbell) finds Herbie in a junkyard and restores him to win a racing contest against villain Simon Moore III. Simon uses an evil black Volkswagen named Horace—the "Hate Bug"—to sabotage them, but Herbie eventually wins, destroys Horace, and secures a happy ending.

00:00:00And now, our feature presentation.
00:00:17It was a time of love.
00:00:19Love was everywhere.
00:00:21In our homes, in the streets, even in our cars.
00:00:27Especially in one little car.
00:00:30He was known as Herbie.
00:00:31He was amazing.
00:00:33Full of love.
00:00:35Able to do incredible things.
00:00:37He was a daring little car.
00:00:39Wild.
00:00:40Willing to try almost anything.
00:00:42All for the love of his owner.
00:00:44Jim Douglas.
00:00:47But that was then.
00:00:49You little piece of worthless junk!
00:00:53This is now.
00:00:54I don't believe you!
00:00:56Come on and move it!
00:01:00Come on, and show me something!
00:01:02Come on, and bring it up to the rear in number 53.
00:01:09Simon for the third.
00:01:12Last.
00:01:14Yeah, I'm going to be kidding me.
00:01:18Wow.
00:01:19Last.
00:01:21I mean, second place is one thing, but last.
00:01:25That's a first, Simon.
00:01:28I mean, I don't understand.
00:01:29I mean, this is the Jim Douglas car.
00:01:32It's the one you asked for.
00:01:33It's the one that won all those races.
00:01:36Hey, so it's not much of a racing car anymore.
00:01:38That's not your fault.
00:01:41I thought you'd be angry.
00:01:43No.
00:01:44No, not at all.
00:01:45But you need to do me a favour.
00:01:47Yeah, sure.
00:01:48Good.
00:01:48Get rid of it.
00:01:50Get rid of it just like that.
00:01:54Now, I know I spoke clearly,
00:01:57and I know I used proper English
00:01:59since we invented the bloody language!
00:02:02Yes, you did.
00:02:02Yes, we did.
00:02:03So, remove this heap from my sight.
00:02:05Now, take it to the junkyard!
00:02:18Well, Veronica,
00:02:19that was a bit of an embarrassment, wasn't it?
00:02:23I should be racing Formula One again, that's all.
00:02:25They never proved I sabotaged anything,
00:02:27so they had no right to boot me down
00:02:29to this ridiculous class of tiny cars.
00:02:31It's outrageous.
00:02:32I deserve more.
00:02:33I need a car that's worthy of me.
00:02:35A car that wins, no matter what.
00:02:38Ripper, hurry up!
00:02:39We're going!
00:02:42Okay.
00:02:43End of the road, little car.
00:02:53Demoted driver Simon Moore III
00:02:54crawling in, dead last.
00:02:56That's right, Tim.
00:02:57It was a crazy day, Adam.
00:02:58Saugus Motor Speedway?
00:02:59But the real story, Dave,
00:03:01in front of the pack was veteran driver,
00:03:03get this, Rudy Walters.
00:03:05Oh, Walters?
00:03:07Oh, come on.
00:03:08Rudy Walters.
00:03:10I gotta tell you, though, Dave,
00:03:11it's tough to believe Simon Moore
00:03:12to lose a race that bad.
00:03:14What was he driving out there?
00:03:19This is coming out of your paycheck, Hank.
00:03:21No, this is your paycheck.
00:03:23It wasn't even a good race.
00:03:24I mean, come on.
00:03:25Rudy Walters?
00:03:26I used to race circles around guys like Walt.
00:03:28I think they called that spinning out.
00:03:30Hey, Hank, hey, Chuck.
00:03:31Rudy here.
00:03:32Now, he's a freeloader.
00:03:33I know that, and I accept it in him.
00:03:35Artist.
00:03:37Installation artist.
00:03:38Freeloader.
00:03:39The difference is,
00:03:40I've known him since he was a kid,
00:03:41and strange as it may seem,
00:03:44I trust his judgment.
00:03:46He says you need a job.
00:03:48I give you a job.
00:03:49He says you need a place to stay.
00:03:51I give you a place to stay.
00:03:53Now, what you need right now
00:03:54is a big kick in the head.
00:03:55Well, maybe now's a good time
00:03:57to stop giving me stuff.
00:03:58Here, Chuck.
00:03:59What, you've never seen a guy
00:04:00get hollered at before?
00:04:01Hey, if it isn't the wage slave.
00:04:03Knock it off, Roddy.
00:04:05Now, I know this shop is a joke,
00:04:07and I know the guys who work here
00:04:08are fools, including you,
00:04:09if you must know.
00:04:10I don't have to know that.
00:04:11What I'm trying to say, Hank,
00:04:14I mean, I really think
00:04:16this could be something someday.
00:04:18Now, that's where you come in.
00:04:19Come in how?
00:04:26What, you want me to whip up some art?
00:04:27No, no, no.
00:04:29That's Roddy's deal.
00:04:30You, Hank,
00:04:32you're gonna enter that.
00:04:34The big fix-off?
00:04:35Chuck, that's tomorrow.
00:04:37Hank, let me lay it out for you.
00:04:38You don't enter, you fire.
00:04:41Then you're gonna be a washed-up mechanic,
00:04:42as well as a washed-up driver.
00:04:46Oh, come on, Chuck.
00:04:47You can't be serious.
00:04:50Oh, I get it.
00:04:51This is one of those
00:04:52tough love things.
00:04:55Right?
00:04:56Okay.
00:04:57You're gonna pick your junker
00:04:58in order of your
00:05:00magic lotto number.
00:05:02So,
00:05:03who's got
00:05:04number one?
00:05:08Hey, there he is.
00:05:11Now, you know if you win,
00:05:13you get to keep it.
00:05:15So pick your junker well.
00:05:16Well, if I win.
00:05:22I don't get it.
00:05:23How can you compete
00:05:24against other mechanics
00:05:25when you're all working
00:05:26on different cars?
00:05:27Number two, where are you?
00:05:29Come get your car.
00:05:30This is a joke, man.
00:05:31Hey.
00:05:35Get your car.
00:05:37Number three,
00:05:39come on down and see me.
00:05:41How come no one's
00:05:42picking that one?
00:05:44Because it's a piece
00:05:45of junk, Rod.
00:05:48Number four.
00:05:50Good luck.
00:05:56Number five.
00:06:01You know, this is like
00:06:03when you're a kid and
00:06:03they're picking up sides
00:06:04for kickball.
00:06:06Number six.
00:06:09I was always picked last.
00:06:13I always hated that.
00:06:21Number seven.
00:06:32Here he comes.
00:06:37Pick a winner, pal.
00:06:44I'll take this one.
00:06:51All you said was
00:06:52I had to enter.
00:06:53I like him.
00:06:58He'll get over it.
00:07:00Okay, if everyone's ready,
00:07:02ladies and gentlemen,
00:07:04fix your engines!
00:07:10Okay, little car.
00:07:11Let's see what you got
00:07:12under the hood.
00:07:13I gotta go.
00:07:17Screwdriver.
00:07:19I think he said this one.
00:07:22Hey, buddy.
00:07:27I'll take this one.
00:07:27Oh, wait, I can't wait.
00:07:28You can't wait.
00:07:29No get that for a while.
00:07:31No get that for a while.
00:07:36No get that for a while.
00:07:38You can't wait.
00:07:44No get that for a while.
00:07:45No get that for a while.
00:07:45I think he said the distributor.
00:07:49That's what it sounded like.
00:07:50Oh, did it?
00:07:51No.
00:07:57Well, the distributor's cracked.
00:08:00See?
00:08:01He was right.
00:08:08You're going to be okay.
00:08:12Just need a little help.
00:08:16A little TLC.
00:08:19Yeah.
00:08:21So here we go.
00:08:24Let's meet our panel of distinguished judges.
00:08:28First, from Shot Specialty Auto,
00:08:30the master of the custom car,
00:08:33Mr. Donnie Shaw.
00:08:38Hey, you know me, buds, huh?
00:08:41Oh, crazy.
00:08:43Go ahead, Rob.
00:08:45Second lady from the Moore family of modified motorworks,
00:08:49it's team triple-M driver,
00:08:52Mr. Simon Moore, the third.
00:08:59Thank you, thank you, thank you.
00:09:02Control yourselves.
00:09:05All right, kill it.
00:09:06Last judge is also reporting on our little event.
00:09:09You'll be sure to kiss her behind, won't you?
00:09:13From Car and Track magazine,
00:09:16Alex of Woodford!
00:09:27I'm really excited.
00:09:32Know her?
00:09:34Dated her.
00:09:42They wouldn't send a photographer.
00:09:44Really?
00:09:45So, Alex,
00:09:47haven't seen me in your magazine for a while.
00:09:50You're barking up the wrong skirt, Simon.
00:09:52I just worked there.
00:09:53Oh, come on now.
00:09:54Surely you have some sway with your higher-ups.
00:09:57Just because I am no longer racing Formula One,
00:10:00it doesn't mean I am not newsworthy.
00:10:02No, it means your daddy can't buy you everything.
00:10:06Oh, besides,
00:10:07we just ran the issue on jerks that have too much money last month.
00:10:10Oh, and I missed it?
00:10:11Yeah, and you could have been the cover.
00:10:13Damn.
00:10:13Yeah.
00:10:16Wait.
00:10:18I know that mechanic.
00:10:22And I know that car.
00:10:25Okay, folks,
00:10:26it's one lap around the track
00:10:28to find out who the best one is.
00:10:31So, without further ado,
00:10:34mechanics,
00:10:35have your junker!
00:10:40All right, this is it.
00:10:43Ladies and gentlemen,
00:10:45attempt to start your engines!
00:11:08Come on, car.
00:11:11Whoa!
00:11:13Say that down to the hill.
00:11:15Two!
00:11:17Three!
00:11:20Two!
00:11:27Hey, get those dead drops off the tracks
00:11:29before the others cover out!
00:11:30Get them out of there!
00:11:32Get over out!
00:11:33Get out of here!
00:11:34What do you mean here?
00:11:35Let's go, boys!
00:11:37Push it!
00:11:38Go, boys!
00:11:42I'll just see you kick some tailpipe.
00:11:45We could both use a bit of a boost.
00:12:14Well, all right, let's go!
00:12:21What are you doing now?
00:12:24It's really fun!
00:12:39We have a winner! We got a winner!
00:12:42Number 3 is the winner!
00:12:54All right, and this year's best and fastest mechanic representing Chuck's Car Shop, in case any of you folks need
00:13:02any car work done, Hank...
00:13:05Cooper.
00:13:05Cooper! Hank Cooper!
00:13:09Well, thanks. This is just so, uh, so big. Really awfully big.
00:13:15I don't know how you did it, man. Did you do it?
00:13:17Come on, we got some judges on to meet you.
00:13:19Yeah, gotta meet some judges.
00:13:23Well, I've never seen such a tiny car do such huge things, bud. You must be one primo mechanic. We
00:13:29got some things to talk about. I'm gonna give you a call, huh?
00:13:32Okay.
00:13:32Come on, Tate. Come on.
00:13:34Uh, Mr. Morris, anything you'd like to say to this year's winner?
00:13:38Uh, no, not really.
00:13:41Except I happen to know your car, and I don't believe what I just saw.
00:13:45Yeah? Well, believe it. As I kind of fixed it, then I went out and drove the snot out of
00:13:51it. Of course, that's probably when you recognize me. I used to drive. Formula One, we used to race together.
00:14:00Ha! We used to what together?
00:14:03Race. I drove. Cooper. Hank Cooper.
00:14:06Cooper.
00:14:10Nope. Can't place it. Of course, you probably never won against me, did you?
00:14:15Well, no.
00:14:16Ah, well, then there you have it. You see, I make it a point never to remember the names of
00:14:20those that I've trounced. Keeps my mind clear for winning and all that. But hey, look at you. You found
00:14:27something you're good at.
00:14:29Hey, come on, Hank. There's another judge. I know she wants to meet you.
00:14:34Now, don't tell me you don't remember me.
00:14:37Sure I remember you. The love of my life. Or was it just a month?
00:14:43All I know is your car shouldn't be able to do what it did. Then again, it did it, so
00:14:48I don't know what's going on.
00:14:52Thanks for coming, folks. And please, drive safely.
00:15:02Hey, ladies. Nice car.
00:15:06Thanks.
00:15:10So...
00:15:11I want to ask you something.
00:15:13As long as it's not about us.
00:15:15No. It's about how come nobody believes I drove this stupid car one stupid lap around a track?
00:15:22Because you started that lap with a standing start wheelie. Which, given the horsepower to weight ratio of a car,
00:15:28is impossible.
00:15:30Well, sure it's impossible. Stock. But this car's been sort of improved. And I can drive, if you remember.
00:15:40Hmm. I remember you quit driving.
00:15:46Well, somebody did that wheelie.
00:15:53This better be good. And fast.
00:15:56Well, we can't do it here. We need more room.
00:16:00Now, if nothing amazing happens, I don't have to give that back to you. I... I kind of dig it
00:16:05now.
00:16:06I just want to know what I saw is real.
00:16:18...
00:16:23...
00:16:30...
00:16:45I just want to pick up my car.
00:17:05Oh, my God.
00:17:22No, no, I think it's the end of the day.
00:17:24I'll call you back.
00:17:37Oh, that's great.
00:17:43Very cool, wow.
00:17:45Excellent.
00:17:47When did you ring it to do that?
00:17:49I didn't.
00:17:57How can that car do those things?
00:18:03I'm asking you.
00:18:14Okay, you can knock it off now.
00:18:15Yeah, I'd love to, believe me.
00:18:16I really would, but I can't seem to stop this thing.
00:18:19Oh, don't give me that, Cooper.
00:18:23Oh, hey, what's going on here?
00:18:26I don't know.
00:18:32Danger road?
00:18:38You could have killed us, Cooper.
00:18:40Alex, easy, easy, Alex, wait a minute.
00:18:41Now open this door.
00:18:43Open it.
00:18:43I'm keeping it closed.
00:18:44Yeah, right.
00:18:45Alex, wait, whoa, whoa, stop.
00:18:48Obviously, we can just roll the windows down and crawl out.
00:18:52So let's just calm down.
00:18:56All right.
00:19:00And while we're being calm, why don't we talk about us?
00:19:05You didn't want to talk about us.
00:19:07Changed my mind.
00:19:09So why are we here while you decided not to go out with me anymore?
00:19:12Please.
00:19:15You know, I'll bet I can get this open.
00:19:18Sorry.
00:19:19Stuck.
00:19:20Why?
00:19:21I mean, it didn't bug me much.
00:19:22I moved on with my life.
00:19:24I'd just like to know why.
00:19:28All right.
00:19:31I didn't want to go out anymore because all you could talk about was racing.
00:19:38That's it?
00:19:39Yeah.
00:19:40But you said you loved racing.
00:19:42You couldn't get enough of racing.
00:19:43Hell, you were a race driver.
00:19:46Let me give you a little dating tip.
00:19:48Never blow off women who show an interest in what you do.
00:19:50An interest?
00:19:51Now, wait a minute.
00:19:52You brought up every crash I had, every blown engine, every mischief.
00:19:56You threw my entire failed career at me.
00:19:58Well, I'm sorry.
00:19:59But you didn't basically wipe out every car you drove.
00:20:02Three years in the circuit and you finished in what?
00:20:04Five races?
00:20:06I thought it was kind of funny.
00:20:07Oh, really?
00:20:08Well, let me give you a little dating tip.
00:20:10Don't tell a guy his life's ambition is funny.
00:20:14Well, I liked you.
00:20:15Yeah, well, I liked you too.
00:20:16So there.
00:20:19What are you doing?
00:20:20Looking for the ejector seat.
00:20:30Well, Veronica, it may have looked like flirting, but try to remember her father owns most of France.
00:20:37Yes, that's right, the country.
00:20:41No, no, no, I'm not mad.
00:20:43Not at all.
00:20:44Yes, I realise it's a problem.
00:20:47Mm-hmm.
00:20:49Well, of course I'll work on it.
00:20:51Yeah, fine.
00:20:53Love you too.
00:20:55Find out who that one is.
00:20:57Mm-hmm.
00:20:58Now, more importantly, where is it?
00:21:01Where's what?
00:21:02The little car you got rid of.
00:21:04The one that won that fix-it contest.
00:21:07I thought you hated that car.
00:21:08Well, yes, but I saw it do some rather amazing things.
00:21:12Things it didn't seem to do when I had it.
00:21:13Now, I know cars, and I know what they can and can't do.
00:21:17Yet, for some reason, this car can do whatever it wants, and I want to know why.
00:21:21So find out the location of its garage.
00:21:22It had some idiot's name.
00:21:24Chexer.
00:21:25Chax.
00:21:27Chucks.
00:21:27Find it.
00:21:29Hey, Hank!
00:21:30Come on!
00:21:34I want to show you something.
00:21:36Look at this.
00:21:37You did it.
00:21:42Hey, Hank!
00:21:43It's just great!
00:21:45We can't handle all the work.
00:21:46They can't handle any work.
00:21:48But, Hank, the point is you did it.
00:21:49You brought honor to our humble shop.
00:21:52Congratulations, Hank.
00:21:53You guys look good out there.
00:21:55You guys?
00:21:56Yeah!
00:21:56You guys.
00:21:58You, and especially that little car.
00:22:02Since when did you start liking cars?
00:22:04Don't.
00:22:05I like this one, though.
00:22:07Besides, I think he digs it here.
00:22:09Oh, really?
00:22:10Did he tell you that?
00:22:12In so many words.
00:22:15Oh, yeah, Hank, I'm going to give you a raise.
00:22:17Oh, Chuck, you don't have to do that.
00:22:18I know I don't have to do it.
00:22:20But now that I got you motivated, I don't want to lose you just yet.
00:22:22Lose me to what?
00:22:24Well, uh, remember that guy with the space car yesterday?
00:22:29Yeah.
00:22:31Well, he's putting together a new racing team, you know?
00:22:33I mean, new car, new drivers.
00:22:34I mean, the whole works.
00:22:35And, uh, well, he called and he was going to offer you a job driving.
00:22:39He is?
00:22:39Well, I told him no.
00:22:40You did?
00:22:41Well, I said you'd think about it.
00:22:43That way I could give you a raise, and then you could turn him down.
00:22:47Great.
00:22:48Another job offer for Hank.
00:22:50Chuck.
00:22:52Uh, Alex from Car and Track?
00:22:56I thought she hated you.
00:22:57Well, I guess she had a change of heart.
00:23:03You know, I'm learning a very weird lesson here.
00:23:06What's that?
00:23:08Everybody loves a quitter.
00:23:13Hello again.
00:23:14Hello again yourself.
00:23:15Yes, yes.
00:23:16Uh, don't mind my garage mate.
00:23:18It's his big opening tonight.
00:23:20No, no, no.
00:23:20And, uh, if it's all right, I sort of promised him that we'd stop by.
00:23:24Perfect.
00:23:24Sure.
00:23:25Hi.
00:23:26Hi.
00:23:27This is kind of embarrassing, but I just haven't been able to stop thinking about this car.
00:23:34I mean, I'm the last person to get obsessed about anything.
00:23:38But I'm even thinking my magazine could do a piece on it.
00:23:41Cars that shouldn't be able to do wheelies, but do them anyway.
00:23:44Or the little car that could.
00:23:47Or, uh, well, I just think it's very interesting.
00:23:53An article on Herbie.
00:23:54I like it.
00:23:55His name's Herbie.
00:23:56I like that.
00:23:57I like how the crazy artist knows the car has a name.
00:24:00Go ahead.
00:24:00Ask him.
00:24:01How do you know?
00:24:01He told me.
00:24:02And it's inscribed on a plate under his hood.
00:24:05I'm not deranged, you know.
00:24:06No, no.
00:24:06Of course not.
00:24:07Come on, Alex.
00:24:07Let's go.
00:24:08Well, aren't we gonna take Herbie?
00:24:10Oh, yeah.
00:24:11He needs to get out, too, Hank.
00:24:12Now, wait a minute.
00:24:13Hold it.
00:24:14It's a car, okay?
00:24:15It's not going to get mad if we don't invite it to join us.
00:24:18He's not gonna be mad, but he is gonna be a little hurt.
00:24:23He likes you, Hank.
00:24:25He thinks you're real special.
00:24:29Oh.
00:24:32That's very nice.
00:24:34Thanks.
00:24:35Now I'm talking to the car.
00:24:36That's right.
00:24:37Because he's alive, and he's got, uh, do you remember feelings?
00:24:40Uh-huh.
00:24:40Well, if that's true, then I'm sure the car shares my feelings, that you've gone a little psychotic.
00:24:44Oh.
00:24:44Yeah.
00:24:45Yeah?
00:24:45Yeah, that's right.
00:24:46You.
00:24:46Yeah, the guy with the projector.
00:24:47No, don't think.
00:24:47No, I'm talking to you.
00:24:48The guy's waving a thing all over the place.
00:24:50No soul.
00:24:50Yeah, no soul.
00:24:51No heart.
00:24:51No comb.
00:24:52Did you hear that?
00:24:52Hey, did you guys just see that?
00:24:57Well, we can, uh, we can just take my car.
00:24:59I mean, it's no Herbie.
00:25:01No, it's a Porsche.
00:25:02Let's go.
00:25:04Roddy, we'll see you at the show.
00:25:11The belt doesn't match the pants, Hank.
00:25:29He doesn't mean that he'll come around.
00:25:31He doesn't mean that he'll come around.
00:25:32You know what?
00:25:35You come with me.
00:25:45Yeah, you're, you're definitely coming with me.
00:25:55Thanks for picking up dinner, by the way.
00:25:57Well, thank the magazine.
00:25:59You actually qualify as a write-off.
00:26:01Well, still after yesterday, I wasn't sure if you'd want to see me again.
00:26:05Everyone deserves a second chance.
00:26:07Of course, you're on your fifth or sixth, but hey, who's counting?
00:26:10So, which one's Roddy's?
00:26:12Oh, you'll know.
00:26:20Would you excuse me for just a moment?
00:26:26No.
00:26:28Hank, you did make it.
00:26:31Yeah, I sure did.
00:26:31Just a quick question, huh?
00:26:34What is the car doing here?
00:26:36I told you he needed to get out.
00:26:37And look, he's perfect for this.
00:26:40I thought you liked the car.
00:26:42I, I love Herbie.
00:26:44He's artistic counterpoint to make these awful things more tolerable.
00:26:49I mean, come on, man.
00:26:50Irony.
00:26:51It's the 90s, Hank, boy.
00:26:53Excuse me.
00:26:55It's what had to be said, Fred.
00:26:57All I can say is, thank you.
00:27:05It had to be said.
00:27:07What had to be said?
00:27:09Do you ask to believe them?
00:27:10It says what it said.
00:27:11Said what?
00:27:11I don't hear anything.
00:27:12Say what?
00:27:12What does it say?
00:27:13Hey, you know, he looks pretty good here.
00:27:14Moron.
00:27:15Bumper and beret magazine.
00:27:17Oh.
00:27:18Oh, okay.
00:27:20So you rigged him to respond to voices.
00:27:22Very clever.
00:27:24I didn't rig him to do anything.
00:27:26I just drove him here and parked.
00:27:28Do you mind if we go upstairs?
00:27:30Yeah.
00:27:30I'll do it.
00:27:32I'll do it.
00:27:32I'll do it.
00:27:32I'll do it.
00:27:33I'll do it.
00:27:34I'll do it.
00:27:35I'll do it.
00:27:35I'll do it.
00:27:36I'll do it.
00:27:38You're welcome.
00:27:39I'm sorry, but I just had to get out of that.
00:27:41I mean, sure, Roddy's one of my best friends, but sometimes, oh, he really bugs me.
00:27:46You sure it's him?
00:27:47Not Herbie?
00:27:48No, I would have car bugged me.
00:27:51Well, maybe he gets too much attention.
00:27:54We don't have to be so observant, you know.
00:27:55We can just chit-chat.
00:27:56Sure.
00:27:57Yeah.
00:27:57Can we talk about racing?
00:27:58Yeah, we can.
00:28:00Yeah, we can.
00:28:14He has took the little car.
00:28:31Yes, please.
00:28:36I'm going to go over here.
00:28:38Yeah.
00:28:39Please.
00:28:50Then I was in a band, Spew Bucket.
00:28:53We rocked maybe a little too hard.
00:28:56Then I was in Mom & Chance, MU.
00:29:00Enough said there.
00:29:02Then I got into installations.
00:29:08Can I help you with something?
00:29:12Well, you can begin by pointing out the genius behind this masterpiece.
00:29:18Well, seriously, congratulations.
00:29:20You have a true sense of clutter.
00:29:25You're the judge from that contest, right?
00:29:28Well, the little fix-it thing.
00:29:29Do you mind if I have a closer look?
00:29:30No.
00:29:32Sure, whatever.
00:29:40I got to say, Cooper, I'm loving this.
00:29:44I mean, you know me.
00:29:45Obviously, I love cars, but this is weird.
00:29:48I've seen driven or taken apart practically every car there is, from Duesenbergs to Ugo's
00:29:53Formula One Ferraris, and yet I can't stop thinking about that little bug.
00:30:00And his owner.
00:30:01Oh, yeah.
00:30:02As long as I'm in there somewhere, sure.
00:30:06I was right, wasn't I?
00:30:08You're jealous of him, aren't you?
00:30:11Well, yeah, okay.
00:30:14I'm a little tired of people being more interested in it than me, yeah.
00:30:19Face it, Hank.
00:30:20You have a very interesting car.
00:30:22Oh, well, I feel all better now.
00:30:23Well, why can't you accept that Herbie's, you know, special?
00:30:27Because Herbie is an it, and it's a car.
00:30:29That does wheelies.
00:30:30Oh, yeah, of course, I had nothing to do with it.
00:30:31That can jack itself up and down.
00:30:33Yeah, sure, we all know Hank can't drive.
00:30:34He can go over 100 miles an hour on four cylinders.
00:30:35Oh, yeah, all Hank can do is crash.
00:30:36Well, he's an amazing little car.
00:30:39Here's a little bit of information you might want to absorb.
00:30:41When something good comes your way, you should try to appreciate it, okay?
00:30:46Is this still about the car, or am I getting another dating tip?
00:30:49I don't know.
00:30:51Maybe both.
00:30:53Luke!
00:30:55Hold that.
00:31:00Move, please.
00:31:02Rudy!
00:31:05Now, now, you'll be criticized if I can't explore it.
00:31:08Installations these days are supposed to be interactive.
00:31:10I'll deal with the critics.
00:31:11Just get out of there.
00:31:13Get out of...
00:31:16Get...
00:31:20You know, I...
00:31:23Hank?
00:31:41All right, that's it.
00:31:43Whoa!
00:31:45Well, well, Cooper.
00:31:47Cooper, isn't it?
00:31:48Yeah, you know exactly who I am.
00:31:49What are you doing to my car, pal?
00:31:51Honestly?
00:31:52Yeah.
00:31:52Well, I've been trying to see how it's been modified, because it couldn't have done what
00:31:56I've seen it do, especially given it's driver.
00:31:58Oh, really?
00:31:59Yeah, really.
00:31:59Okay, let's talk about driving you and me.
00:32:01Yeah, how about it, huh?
00:32:02Oh, I am terrified.
00:32:03Yeah, you should be, pal.
00:32:04Terrified.
00:32:04Yeah, come on.
00:32:05Let's drive.
00:32:05I've got five speeds for you, pal.
00:32:07Yeah, you thinking about that?
00:32:08Yeah, right.
00:32:08Oh, I am quaking in my boots.
00:32:11Whoa!
00:32:12Oh!
00:32:15Oh!
00:32:17Oh!
00:32:27You know what?
00:32:28You're out of here.
00:32:29Let's go.
00:32:30Fine, fine, fine.
00:32:32I've got what I need.
00:32:34Oh, you never know.
00:32:35Oh, sure.
00:32:41What did I miss?
00:32:42Oh, you're out of here.
00:32:45Rupert, get to the airport.
00:32:47You must locate a German engineer by the name of Stumpfel.
00:32:50No, I don't know where.
00:32:51That's your job with your little high-tech gadgets.
00:32:54Just find them and bring them to me.
00:32:55Dr. Gustav Stumpfel.
00:33:07What did I miss?
00:33:13I found him.
00:33:14Of course you did.
00:33:16But I specifically told you to go to Germany and get him.
00:33:20He doesn't live in Germany.
00:33:22He lives in Pomona.
00:33:24Pomona, but that's right here.
00:33:25And so I got him.
00:33:32Presenting Dr. Gustav Stumpfel.
00:33:40Dr. Stumpfel?
00:33:43Yeah, that's me.
00:33:47Of course it is.
00:33:49Of course it is.
00:33:51Please, please.
00:33:52Come in.
00:33:53Come in.
00:33:53Sit down.
00:33:55We must talk.
00:33:56We must talk.
00:33:56I have so many questions for you.
00:33:58So very, very many.
00:34:00Well, it was much easier then.
00:34:03Over 50 years ago, I was employed by my government
00:34:07to develop what was to be the simplest of cars.
00:34:11Simple to drive.
00:34:12Even easier to maintain.
00:34:15A people's car, we came to call it.
00:34:18And so it was just the cutest little thing.
00:34:23But after the war, the American military heard about our work
00:34:28and they insisted I come over here to discuss it with them.
00:34:31So I came.
00:34:35I didn't know I was young.
00:34:39And they kept me for days.
00:34:41They were so insistent, so loud, so...
00:34:45American.
00:34:46Yeah, I know.
00:34:47Please.
00:34:48Well, they wanted me to tell them all about the car we had made.
00:34:54We want you to tell us all about this car you've made.
00:34:58Oh, well.
00:34:58So I told them about my work.
00:35:01And they revealed they wanted me to build them their own car.
00:35:05We want you to build us our own car.
00:35:07But they seem to have confused my people's car
00:35:11with some sort of fantastic car that was a people.
00:35:16This is a people's car.
00:35:17Crazy thought that my car was somehow alive.
00:35:20And they wanted such a car for themselves.
00:35:23We want one for ourselves.
00:35:25I took them seriously.
00:35:27I didn't know I was young.
00:35:29So, I worked.
00:35:31I attempted to fabricate a car that didn't exist,
00:35:35but that they thought I had already made.
00:35:38I stalled for years while I toiled.
00:35:41Until I realized the design of the car did not matter.
00:35:46Only the metal that it was made from them.
00:35:50So, I tried every alloy, every amalgam, every conceivable compound.
00:35:55Then, one day, an accident happened.
00:36:03My most prized possession, a photo of my beloved Elsa fell into the mix.
00:36:12Now, I realize this is not very scientific, but I believe that the powerful feelings I had for her
00:36:20were somehow transmogrified into the metal itself, making it possible to create a living car.
00:36:28But, I knew that it would be used for evil, so I decided to hide him.
00:36:34Now, listen, you. We want this living car!
00:36:38I told them I had failed.
00:36:40Once they were convinced, I snuck the little car out and set him free.
00:36:47Later, I learned that he had found a good home with a man named Douglas,
00:36:51and that he had been racing to great success.
00:36:55So, that's the secret?
00:36:58Amazing.
00:37:02Doctor.
00:37:04How would you like the chance to create another?
00:37:11Another little car?
00:37:13Now, of course, but, but it would be impossible.
00:37:17I don't have the facilities, you see.
00:37:19Please, feel free to use mine.
00:37:22No, you don't understand.
00:37:24I would need the ability to forge steel, to fabricate sheet metal at will.
00:37:28I would need the manufacturing capability of a severe nature.
00:38:01Is it clear enough for you, Doctor?
00:38:11it's still impossible
00:38:13I would need a fragment
00:38:15of the original metal from the little car himself
00:38:18well I don't suppose
00:38:19this would do
00:38:20it was original, it was a gift
00:38:28but there's still one thing
00:38:32perhaps
00:38:33you would have something
00:38:35of your own to enhance the mixture
00:38:37a
00:38:39a framed photo
00:38:41of someone you love
00:38:44someone I love
00:38:47yes of course
00:38:48Rupert, get that photograph of that person that I love so much
00:38:51now Rupert
00:38:55doctor, you'll have that and more
00:38:57now can you build the car or not
00:39:06I think I can
00:39:16Rupert, you didn't actually have to go and
00:39:21well maybe we could sneak that into the mix somehow
00:39:24yeah Rupert
00:39:28in fact
00:39:30perhaps we could sneak quite a bit
00:39:32into the mix
00:39:34Rupert, wake up my engineers
00:39:36they've got work to do
00:39:38those other fools think their little car so lovingly special
00:39:41we could see mine
00:40:01Roddy, where's the key?
00:40:02I don't know
00:40:03it wasn't there last night
00:40:05after the show either
00:40:06well how'd you get home?
00:40:10Herbie drove
00:40:13yeah
00:40:14look
00:40:15I really wanted to see the little car do its tricks
00:40:18maybe I should come back later
00:40:20ah Donnie
00:40:20forget about the little car
00:40:21I'm not gonna be racing
00:40:23and I'm gonna be driving your cars
00:40:25drive?
00:40:26you said you were gonna drive anything
00:40:29well
00:40:30Chuck told me that you're putting together a racing team
00:40:32and you need a driver
00:40:34so I'm your guy
00:40:37I've got plenty of drivers son
00:40:39what I need is a funny little joke car
00:40:41to entertain the line at the snack bar
00:40:44you're just the mechanic
00:40:49oh
00:40:54well
00:40:55then you can take your little snack bar
00:40:57and shove it
00:40:59Donnie
00:41:08hey Hank
00:41:10for what it's worth
00:41:11I'm sorry
00:41:12yeah
00:41:13well
00:41:13it would've come out eventually
00:41:17but how come
00:41:18nobody can get it straight
00:41:19that I am the reason
00:41:20this stupid little car
00:41:21does what it does
00:41:22Hank
00:41:23Herbie does what he does
00:41:24for you
00:41:25not because of you
00:41:26okay

00:43:19You must destroy it. You'll do no such thing. He's beautiful. It's amazing. He certainly
00:43:35is. And now I'm beginning to think it would be best to eliminate the competition.
00:43:49A lemonade? I can do that. Good. Do you want to come along? No, no, no, no, no. I shouldn't
00:43:58be there. I don't have any oil in my hands. Uh, what about, uh, Dr. Stumpfel? Hasn't got
00:44:11a clue. Cut him loose.
00:44:27He's gone. I told him you'd come back, but I guess he couldn't wait.
00:44:37Roddy, how could somebody take him without a key? Nobody took him. Okay. So what you're
00:44:49saying is that, uh, Herbie went out looking for me? Yeah, that's exactly it. I know you think
00:45:01I'm whacked out, Hank. But this is real. Think about it. The wheelies. The locked doors.
00:45:11Heck, driving me home last night. Think about it, Hank. He's alive!
00:45:27Nobody would believe I made the car do what it did because he did it.
00:45:51He is alive, isn't he? I've got to find him.
00:46:04He's alive.
00:46:11He's alive.
00:46:14He's alive.
00:46:18He's alive.
00:46:21He's alive.
00:46:23He's alive.
00:46:26He's alive.
00:46:28He's alive.
00:46:30He's alive.
00:46:31He's alive.
00:46:32He's alive.
00:46:33He's alive.
00:46:34He's alive.
00:46:34He's alive.
00:46:38Oh, my God.
00:47:06Oh, my God.
00:47:55Sorry, little car.
00:47:57It's the end of the room.
00:48:34It's the end of the room.
00:48:34Herbie!
00:48:49Herbie?
00:49:10Herbie.
00:49:14What did they do to you?
00:49:20What did I do to you?
00:49:31It'll be okay.
00:49:35We'll fix you up.
00:49:42Hang in there, Herb.
00:49:45Hang on, buddy.
00:49:46Hang on, buddy.
00:50:16Hang on, buddy.
00:50:18Hang on.
00:50:21Hang on, buddy.
00:50:34Hang on, buddy.
00:50:36Hang on, buddy.
00:50:58ORCHESTRA PLAYS
00:51:24I'm Jim Douglas. I was a friend of Herbie's.
00:51:31I think we need to talk.
00:51:39You mind if I take a look?
00:51:43It's worse than you think.
00:51:45Well, don't worry. I've seen pretty bad.
00:51:57Oh, Herbie.
00:52:00Oh, my little car.
00:52:02Uh, I'm sorry, but if you used to own Herbie, then...
00:52:08He built the car 30 years ago.
00:52:14Well, nice job, because, uh, he's amazing.
00:52:18Well, he was.
00:52:25And we'll be again.
00:52:27That'll be a good trick.
00:52:29He's pretty far gone, Mr. Douglas.
00:52:31All we need is a computerized metalworks factory...
00:52:34with Total Parts Replication Facilities.
00:52:37Yeah, well, that's fine, but all we have is Chuck's.
00:52:40Sorry, Chuck.
00:52:42But what are we even talking about?
00:52:47We're going to rebuild him.
00:52:58I've got a parts house that delivers.
00:53:00No, unless we make the new car entirely from the old, it won't be Herbie.
00:53:07Oh, yeah.
00:53:08Any non-original parts will cause him to lose his vital essence.
00:53:15So what are you saying?
00:53:16That we have to reshape these actual parts?
00:53:20That's right.
00:53:26We know a place that makes cars from scratch.
00:53:28I mean, they're stupid cars, but the shop has every kind of metalworking rig there is.
00:53:32That would help, right?
00:53:33Of course.
00:53:35But Hank, he hates your guts.
00:53:39Yeah, I know that, but I've got to try something.
00:53:44Well, now, doing work that fast costs mucho, bud.
00:53:48Especially for guys who make me mad.
00:53:50No, serious mucho.
00:53:52Get it?
00:53:52I get it.
00:53:53Look, I got some money.
00:53:55That's your racing money.
00:53:56You're going to buy a car.
00:53:57I know what I was going to do, Roddy.
00:54:00So, are you in?
00:54:04If you're paying, I'm playing.
00:54:06Okay, I'll load up the pieces.
00:54:08You can start right away.
00:54:11Hey, look, I'm sorry about your car, too.
00:54:13Maybe tomorrow.
00:54:14No charge.
00:54:15We're doing something important in here.
00:54:19Well, at least I think it's important.
00:54:43There you go.
00:54:46So, what was he like when you knew him?
00:54:52Oh, he was...
00:54:55He was everything we'd like ourselves to be.
00:54:58Loyal, giving, pure.
00:55:02Well, I wish I had that figured out before this happened.
00:55:06Well, he'd understand.
00:55:08That's probably what he's best at, understanding.
00:55:11That and soaking up the personality of his owner and then giving it back to him.
00:55:19I'm not exactly following him.
00:55:21Well, he, uh, he becomes like his owner and then helps them get what they need.
00:55:30So, it wasn't Herbie that whipped out to that secluded spot and locked the doors and all that.
00:55:34It was you, trying to get me alone.
00:55:37Me?
00:55:38No, it was the car.
00:55:41Herbie did that to me, too.
00:55:44So, I'm at my wine.
00:55:51Give me a wrench, will you?
00:55:52Yeah.
00:56:02Hey, you didn't eat your fish, witch.
00:56:04Yeah, well, I'll get to it later.
00:56:07Special delivery.
00:56:08Oh, hey, great.
00:56:08Just, uh, put them in place.
00:56:15Looks like you're making some progress.
00:56:17Yeah.
00:56:18I'll get your money now.
00:56:20Uh-uh.
00:56:24Why don't you get it to me later?
00:56:27You serious?
00:56:30I never joke about money, bud.
00:56:33Yeah, I'll get that.
00:56:40So, what time tomorrow?
00:56:45He's still at it.
00:56:48Won't stop.
00:56:59Hank?
00:57:01Is there anything we can do?
00:57:04Nope.
00:57:08Oh, my boy.
00:57:11You mustn't give up.
00:57:13Oh, I'm not giving up.
00:57:19I'm finished.
00:57:22I think you all know Herbie.
00:57:29Herbie?
00:57:31So?
00:57:32Is he the same car?
00:57:34Well, I don't know.
00:57:37The stupid part is we don't even have a key to find out.
00:57:43I, uh, always kept a spare.
00:57:47Just for luck.
00:57:50Oh, no, thank you.
00:57:55Please.
00:57:58The honor is yours.
00:58:00Grace.
00:58:04I love you.
00:58:29Come on.
00:58:40But, is it him?
00:58:50Irby?
00:59:06Good boy!
00:59:16Does he need some kind of service? Get a mechanic in here, Rupert!
00:59:20He's tired of being cooked up in here! He needs some exercise!
00:59:23Of course, of course, a machine of this calibre needs to be run and run hard!
00:59:27Get my driving gloves! Now!
00:59:31Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! Take it easy there, my little friend! Take it easy!
00:59:36Yeah!
00:59:47Well, pal, I...
00:59:50I think you're in the hands of some real fine people here.
00:59:55And yes, yes, they do look good together.
01:00:03It's been great, Irby.
01:00:07I'll see you around.
01:00:09Jim?
01:00:11Uh, what are you doing?
01:00:14It's time for me to go.
01:00:16But what if we need your help?
01:00:18If you have any other questions, ask Irby.
01:00:21He'll know.
01:00:28So you think it's true?
01:00:30What, that Irby has all the answers?
01:00:33No.
01:00:34That he's trying to bring us back together.
01:00:37Because I've...
01:00:37Yeah, that's crazy.
01:00:39You bet it is.
01:00:41Yeah.
01:00:41Well, I'm just gonna get some more coffee.
01:00:44Yeah, I gotta clean up around here, too. I...
01:00:55Well, if you are gunning for us, pal, you got your work cut out for you.
01:01:01Me!
01:01:07Slow down a bit!
01:01:11Whoa, whoa, whoa!
01:01:12Just where exactly are we...
01:01:19Going.
01:01:24Yes, yes, I see, I see.
01:01:26Settle down, settle down.
01:01:28Look, look, I won't have any more of this.
01:01:32Stay put.
01:01:36I'll be right back.
01:01:38I'm gonna settle this once and for all.
01:01:43Hey, Doc.
01:01:45When was the first time you knew he was special?
01:01:49Oh, from the very beginning.
01:01:53He spoke to me.
01:01:55Hey, he spoke to me, too, Doc.
01:01:57Me?
01:01:59Me?
01:02:06Doc?
01:02:09Doc, where are you going?
01:02:11I must learn the blueprints.
01:02:13The blueprints to what?
01:02:14To the little car.
01:02:16I did... I did something horrible.
01:02:18I must make amends.
01:02:20No, there cannot be another one.
01:02:23Another Herbie? No, that's impossible, Doc.
01:02:25Not only is it possible.
01:02:27It has already happened.
01:02:31Knock, knock.
01:02:41So...
01:02:42This is the home of the nice people's car.
01:02:47What a perfectly ridiculous dump.
01:02:52I've come to offer you a chance to redeem yourself, Cooper.
01:02:55Redeem myself how?
01:02:56By racing again.
01:02:59Against my little car.
01:03:03Your little car?
01:03:06And that's why I'm proposing the following stakes for our little race.
01:03:11The winner takes home both cars.
01:03:14To do with what he wants.
01:03:16Now then.
01:03:18Shall we say tomorrow, little cars at dawn?
01:03:28You make it sound like a duo.
01:03:33That's exactly what it is.
01:03:36And may the best car win.
01:03:57Okay, so where is this jerk?
01:04:00Maybe he had second thoughts.
01:04:06I don't think so.
01:04:28Morning!
01:04:30Ready to lose?
01:04:33I see these two know each other.
01:04:38It's all right, Herbie.
01:04:40It's okay, easy.
01:04:41We're here.
01:04:42Where did he get that car?
01:04:44That's what the doctor meant.
01:04:46He said there was another Herbie.
01:04:48Do you mind?
01:04:50It's not another Herbie.
01:04:52His name's Horace.
01:04:53And he's a vast improvement on your car.
01:04:57Just curb your violence.
01:04:59That's not what this is about.
01:05:01Yet.
01:05:03Now, the finish line is 20 miles through that pass I've arranged for the private use of this road,
01:05:08so you will see neither other cars nor radar-wielding authority figures.
01:05:11You need only worry about me.
01:05:15There's no rules, of course, other than the loser loses his vehicle.
01:05:21And I am so looking forward to owning you, Herbie.
01:05:28Horace is gonna have such fun with him.
01:05:30Are we gonna race here or what?
01:05:33Oh, yeah, we're gonna race all right.
01:05:35Ugh, this is such a guy thing.
01:05:38Doesn't somebody need to wave a flag or do a countdown or something?
01:05:46I didn't actually mean me.
01:05:48See the finish line, Cooper.
01:05:50Don't be too long.
01:05:53Rupert, let's get this over with.
01:05:55Okay, gang.
01:05:59Saddle up.
01:06:00Okay, boys.
01:06:02Very simply, we're up against more horsepower, faster aerodynamics,
01:06:06and one really nasty Scotsman.
01:06:08We could get our tails kicked.
01:06:10Well, then maybe this isn't the best time to bring up the fact that I haven't exactly raced in a
01:06:14while.
01:06:14Oh, come on, guys. We'll do fine.
01:06:19Okay, Horace, this is what you've been built for.
01:06:22Don't let me down.
01:06:38I can't go now.
01:06:43There's nothing, Rob.
01:06:51Guess what we're gonna do.
01:07:02On three, one, two, three, go, Herbie, go, go.
01:07:27They're all gonna die.
01:07:38Come on.
01:07:41Come on, baby.
01:08:22You see Rupert, this is gonna be all too easy.
01:08:28Please.
01:08:44Boy, that car can really move.
01:08:46Yeah, well, he's being driven well.
01:08:48Herbie's just holding back a bit.
01:08:50Any time now he's gonna strike me.
01:08:51Yeah, well, any time would be just fine, Herbie.
01:09:01Oh, it just gets to be so tiring all the time.
01:09:05Women always throwing themselves at me.
01:09:09And again, who can blame them?
01:09:11Yeah, well, you got all that money.
01:09:15Charm and wit.
01:09:18You have a lot of really nice clothes.
01:09:23Now that's more like it.
01:09:26Rupert, perhaps you underestimated them.
01:09:28If you will, hang on.
01:09:40Okay, I'll give you a wash, a wax, and one of those little air fresheners.
01:09:47Deal?
01:10:00They're gaining on us.
01:10:01Oh!
01:10:09Where are you, Ronnie?
01:10:10You're right, you're right!
01:10:17I got him, I got him!
01:10:27And there you blocked me, Cooper.
01:10:39Excellent move, my friend.
01:10:48You ready for this?
01:10:57Oh, he wants to trade paint, does he?
01:11:04Damn!
01:11:05They're passing us!
01:11:08Rupert, I believe it's time to reveal the first modification.
01:11:40Hey, what is it, Roddy?
01:11:41Hey!
01:11:41Hey!
01:11:42What?
01:11:46Aw, you gotta be kidding me.
01:11:51Hey!
01:11:51Hey!
01:11:57He's gonna kill her and do something!
01:11:59I'm trying, I'm trying!
01:12:08Hey!
01:12:09Back off!
01:12:11Back off!
01:12:16This is where we say ciao.
01:12:30Now that's racing!
