00:00Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you the Luska.
00:05This giant cephalopod-like sea creature, half octopus, half shark, is, many believe, the stuff of fantasy.
00:14The kind of fictional monster Jules Verne might dream up.
00:18But then, there are those more open-minded souls, like myself, who believe this gigantic cryptid to be as real
00:26as you or I.
00:27I will present to you the evidence I have collated, proving this animal is no mere figment of the imagination.
00:33And it all begins with the first sighting, off the coast of St. Marie in 1823, by this man.
00:42A pirate by the name of Pierre Lafitte.
00:52Pierre Lafitte was my great-great-great-grandfather.
00:56I'll tell you no lies.
00:58Still got the journal he had when he was pirating away.
01:01Passed on from generation to generation.
01:04And that's why this is the only boat trip where you can experience the exact place my ancestor witnessed.
01:12The Luska.
01:14Roll up, roll up!
01:16You know you want to.
01:17And I promise you guys, you will not be disappointed.
01:22So, how was it?
01:24You're a believer now.
01:26To be honest, I think I'm even less of a believer than I was before.
01:32I don't know why you're bothered.
01:34Because I want to be prepared.
01:37I'm afraid nothing can prepare you for my ex-husband.
01:46Either that's him, or we've come to a soup kitchen by mistake.
01:53Hello, Giles.
01:55Cara.
01:56It's been a while, hasn't it?
01:58Death?
01:58Oh, er.
02:01Stop me.
02:07This is Rory.
02:10Ah, yes.
02:11Didn't realise you were bringing him.
02:14Nice to meet you, Rory.
02:16It's great to finally meet you, Giles.
02:18Can't wait to hear all your stories about the Luska.
02:20Absolutely fascinated about it.
02:22Ah.
02:24Would you like a glass of wine?
02:26Just a cup of coffee will do me, sir.
02:28Um, let me see if I can find a waiter.
02:32Sit down.
02:39So, how are you?
02:41I mean, you know, the anniversary.
02:45Feels strange to be back.
02:48Like it was only yesterday.
02:51I'm taking the boat out later to where it happened.
02:55Fancy joining.
02:56You remember him together?
02:57No, I'd rather stay here with Rory.
03:13Come on.
03:19Poor guy.
03:29All right, we'll let her.
03:48All right, we'll let her.
03:49Then we'll let her.
03:57It's just a bad dream.
04:03Yeah.
04:06How have you been?
04:07Just went for a walk.
04:09That's all.
04:12Thanks.
04:14And.
04:16Oh, my God.
04:46Oh, my God.
05:16What's wrong?
05:17Turns out I am an uncle.
05:20Yes, Mum.
05:21Yes, I understand.
05:22What, I came to visit Uncle Merv anyway?
05:26That's Eloise.
05:27The niece I didn't know I had.
05:28So you're her Uncle Merv.
05:31No, I'm not.
05:33I mean, yes, I am her uncle, but not Merv.
05:35Never Merv.
05:36Understood?
05:36Okay.
05:37Clearly touched a nerve there.
05:41Well, I kind of miss him.
05:42So she's Solomon's daughter?
05:44I don't know why he couldn't just tell me that in the first place.
05:46He could have just said, well, as it happens, I do have a daughter.
05:49Are he and her mother together?
05:51Yeah, not for some time, apparently.
05:52She's supposed to be staying with her Auntie Vondra.
05:55Well, she doesn't like it there, so she ran away and came here.
05:59They've got a case, I assume?
06:01Oh, my God.
06:02It's not a murder case, is it?
06:05Please let me come on a ride along, Uncle Merv.
06:08Please.
06:08Right, so firstly, you're not coming on any ride along.
06:12And secondly, it's not Uncle Merv.
06:15It's Mervyn, remember?
06:18Hi, I'm Naomi, by the way.
06:21I work with your Uncle Merv.
06:25Right, go pack your stuff, young lady.
06:27You've got a boat to catch.
06:29I am sending you back home to Antigua.
06:31Whatever you say, Uncle Merv.
06:33And it's not...
06:37I like her.
06:43Victim's name's Giles Parry, 58 years of age.
06:46Body was found floating six miles out at sea.
06:49Sergeant Fletcher's with the Coast Guard now.
06:51A couple of fishermen going out early this morning came across the body.
06:55But paramedics reckon he'd been in the water since last night.
06:59Thing is, this is already causing a stir on the heart.
07:03Why is that?
07:04Because of those marks on his body.
07:07They're all over his front and his back and the bruising here.
07:12Some people are saying it was caused by the Luska and that's what killed him.
07:17Sorry, what?
07:19It's a sea monster.
07:20A sea monster?
07:21Like a local legend kind of thing.
07:24Half shark, half octopus wraps its tentacles around you and drags you under.
07:28Hence...
07:29A sea monster?
07:30Not everybody believes in this thing.
07:32Most people don't.
07:34Do you?
07:34No, but it's still part of our history, part of our culture.
07:40Right.
07:40Well, we can knock that theory on the head as a possible cause of death, all right?
07:44Except there's a little more to it than that, sir.
07:47That's why he's here.
07:55I've always wondered whether this would come back to haunt me.
07:59Seven years ago, yesterday, Giles Parry's 16-year-old son, Benjamin, drowned at sea.
08:08In the exact same location as Giles' body was found this morning.
08:14A local fisherman told me that Mr. Parry had sailed out to that spot yesterday to pay his respects.
08:24Then he ended up dead himself?
08:26Mm-hmm.
08:28Was he stormy yesterday?
08:30Called the harbour master.
08:32It was come for the last 24 hours.
08:34And do we know what time he left the harbour?
08:36Just before 7 o'clock, according to the GPS.
08:40Also, there's a boat mechanic who's been fixing Mr. Parry's engine.
08:43He saw him leave.
08:45He says there was definitely nobody else on the boat with him.
08:48It's arrived at a final destination half an hour later.
08:51Radar shows no other boat near it at any point.
08:54So what happened to him?
08:56How did he end up dead with all those weird markings on him?
09:00Unless, you know, it was the Luska.
09:06I hate to break it to you, Officer Rose, but sea monsters don't exist.
09:09No, yeah. I know.
09:12But it would be cool if they did do all right.
09:15What's that?
09:24It's a bullet.
09:26Our victim wasn't a shock, right?
09:29No.
09:30And there was no gun found on the boat?
09:32Not that I've found so far.
09:38So what is that doing here?
09:48I don't know what happened on that boat.
09:51But the fact that we found this on it means it's suspicious.
09:55I think someone else was there, you know?
10:02I'm going to talk to Catherine.
10:04From what I know, James Parry was an isolated figure, but he did drink at her bar and he would
10:11talk to her.
10:13I'm also going to contact the Guadalupe police and request the Benjamin Parry case files.
10:19So the search back then wasn't led by the St. Marie team?
10:23As it was, the Guadalupe Coast Guard, who was first contacted when the empty boat was discovered, they staked there
10:31clean.
10:33I bet that rankled.
10:34I did push for us to have a role, but the senior investigating officer wasn't interested.
10:44There's some people on St. Marie who think I should have pressed harder, especially when they ran into a dead
10:52end earlier on.
10:55It's always been felt more could have been done from by me.
11:05Considering I am already persona non grata, I would like to do my bit to try and solve this case
11:14now and win back the community's trust.
11:18I've located the victim's ex-wife.
11:21She and her partner are staying at a hotel just outside town.
11:32We arrived here two days ago to mark the anniversary of Kara's son's passing.
11:38And I'm sorry to ask, Miss Smart, but your son Benjamin, why did he take the boat out on his
11:45own?
11:47Giles had always been into UFOs and aliens, that kind of thing.
11:52Our holidays were spent visiting Loch Ness or the Bermuda Triangle.
11:57The Losca here on St. Marie.
11:59Ben was getting even more fanatical than his dad.
12:02That's why he snuck out on his own and took the boat we'd hired out for a last-ditch sighting
12:09of the Losca.
12:10The weather turned bad.
12:12The sea was rough.
12:14He never came back.
12:20I kept hoping they'd find him alive with a life jacket on, just floating somewhere.
12:25As time passed, you have to accept that he's not coming back.
12:31So you returned home to England?
12:34After ten months, Giles and I were arguing non-stop by then.
12:38I just needed some space, some time to process it all.
12:44Whereas he...
12:47Giles was convinced the Losca took their son.
12:52He became obsessed.
12:53That's why he stayed on here when I left.
12:56To try and prove the Losca exists.
12:59And he really, truly believed in it.
13:05And yesterday, did you see Giles at all?
13:09We had an early dinner at five.
13:11It's great to finally meet you, Giles.
13:13And how was that?
13:14How was Giles then?
13:16It was fine.
13:17You know, quiet.
13:18Giles was Giles still as delusional as he ever was.
13:23Did Giles ever own a gun at all?
13:26Not like we were together.
13:28And I struggled to leave.
13:30He bought one while he was out here.
13:32What exactly happened to Giles?
13:34You said that he was found dead at sea.
13:36I assumed it was an accident.
13:38But is there more to it than that?
13:41Well, we're not sure yet.
13:43We're still working on that one.
13:54Hey, my friend's dad swears he saw the Losca one time.
13:57Okay, son. Come on.
13:59It's never the same afterwards.
14:02Let's keep our focus on the keys.
14:31Auntie Vondra.
14:32I mean, Vondra.
14:40Vondra, Vondra.
14:41It's all right.
14:42She's back at my place.
14:43She's safe.
14:44Thanks.
14:44Okay, look, I'll call you back in a bit.
14:47Mo?
14:49Hey, Uncle Mo.
14:51Hope you're hungry.
14:52I ordered lots.
14:54Which reminds me,
14:55I borrowed your credit card this morning.
14:57Needed it to pay for the boat ticket back to St Marie.
14:59And dinner.
15:00You really are your father's daughter, aren't you?
15:03I know, right?
15:04What's going on, Eloise?
15:06Why are you back here?
15:09Because we need to talk about Dad.
15:12We could have done that this morning.
15:14Why didn't you mention it then?
15:15I was waiting for the right moment.
15:17And before I know it,
15:19you're shoving me on our boat back home.
15:23All right.
15:24What about you, Dad?
15:27We need to work out a plan, Uncle Merv.
15:29A plan for what?
15:30To get him out of prison.
15:32To find evidence that proves he's innocent.
15:36OK, um,
15:38what exactly did your dad tell you
15:40about him being arrested?
15:41Just that he was set up
15:42and shouldn't be in jail.
15:45That it's a miscarriage.
15:48A miscarriage of justice.
15:51So,
15:52we need to help him, right?
15:57Why don't you go and get some plates and cutlery, yeah?
16:06I'm sorry.
16:08You idiots.
16:11You idiots.
16:35and held me hostage he's dressed it up like he was the victim and she obviously idolizes him
16:43what are you going to do i should just tell her the truth right just tell her in a nice
16:52way
16:52not in a your kind of way what is it my kind of way you know sometimes you can be
17:01a tiny bit
17:03insensitive insensitive me insensitive that is rubbish i mean if anything it's everyone else
17:11who is too sensitive sure that's totally what it is
17:18hey louise
17:22right um i'm off to work now so we can have dinner later yeah and we'll um we'll talk
17:33okay uncle mark
17:37old school i like it
17:45right where we at with the case anything from the lab yet
17:50postmortems estimating time of death between 7 30 and 8 p.m
17:53so the victim leaves the harbor at 7 dies between 7 30 and 8 out at sea just after he
18:02drops anchor
18:03and cause of death was internal bleeding due to a ruptured spleen which in theory could have been caused by
18:12something gripping him tightly like the tentacles of the lusk
18:18or more likely something else
18:23same with the red markings kinda like friction burns
18:26but there's nothing at the scene to suggest what might have caused it
18:30what about the search of the victim's house
18:33mattia and seb are just starting
18:49mattia and seb are just starting
18:51sarge you have to see this ten-year-old seb will be losing his mind right now
18:58oh
18:59like sea monster central in here
19:04this is gonna be the best search ever
19:06all right officer rose you start on the computer i'll hit the cabinets
19:10ah cool
19:18you all right sarge
19:20yeah it's just my old boss from jamaica i'll call him once we're done with this
19:34so what do we know about our victim
19:36giles parry worked as a paramedic back in the uk until he moved out here seven years ago
19:42spent all his savings buying a boat and earned a small income giving talks about the legend of the luska
19:49what about these two any sniff of a motive yet
19:51we're still waiting on mr lions's background and financial checks
19:56but he and kara have been together just over a year met on a dating app
19:59now as he only met the victim for the first time yesterday
20:04i'm struggling to find a reason for him wanting mr parry dead
20:07but she's a different story
20:09miss smart previously worked as a teacher before giving that up to write a book a few years ago
20:15a memoir about losing her son
20:17i skim read it and she's very honest about how hurt and angry she felt about giles's behavior
20:24when i needed my husband's love the most he disappeared down the rabbit hole of fantasy
20:30casting me aside for his futile belief in a mythical beast
20:34i mean the guy had gone full-on looney tune didn't he
20:38what was that you said earlier about not being insensitive
20:42look i'm not
20:43where it gets interesting is the books no longer bringing in any money
20:47she's basically broke
20:49i spoke to her literary agents in the uk and apparently a us tv production company has offered to make
20:56a documentary about her and joss's son going missing
20:59it's worth a quarter of a million dollars
21:02oh i'm sensing a but
21:04what
21:05it going ahead
21:06was dependent
21:07on mr parry agreeing to appear in the documentary too
21:11don't tell me
21:25don't tell me
21:41he didn't want to
21:41be stubborn
21:42because i know what they'll do
21:43make me have to look like some mad conspiracy theorist
21:46i hate you charles
21:47so much
21:51i didn't just lose a son seven years ago
21:54i lost my husband as well
21:56he never once thought of me
21:58that maybe he needed to be there for me
22:02and even now years later i asked for his help because
22:05yes i need the money
22:07i thought at least he owed me that one favour but
22:11no
22:12not even that
22:12thing is miss mark we checked with the production company
22:15and that documentary's officially got the go ahead
22:17so now with joss dying in suspicious circumstances
22:21and even the locals saying it was the lusker that did it
22:23well it's an even more tantalizing proposition than it was before
22:26you get exactly what you wanted
22:28no you're wrong
22:29i didn't kill chance to get some documentary made
22:33i'm not that desperate
22:36i'll hesitate this
22:39so you want to tell me where you were two nights ago between 7 30 and 8
22:43we were here at the hotel
22:46we were together in our room
22:49it wasn't me it just wasn't
22:54sir
23:00that was my tissues with the commissioner
23:02they've got something
23:12this is the closest i've come to actually seeing it
23:14the lusker
23:15i'm still shaking from what happened
23:19if ever there was proof she's out there this is it
23:21i've moored my boat a few miles out
23:23that coordinates are
23:2516 degrees 32 minutes 29.8 seconds north
23:2861 degrees 55 minutes 01.8 seconds west
23:32there's a sinkhole on the seabed there right
23:34previously identified as a possible home for the creature
23:37amazing
23:38it was just getting dark
23:40i heard it
23:41felt it
23:42a thud
23:43as it hit the bow of the boat
23:44and again
23:45and then again
23:46i could hear it dragging itself along as it tried to pull away
23:49it was her
23:50i know it was
23:52the lusker
23:54i'm going to go back again tonight
23:57totally amazing
24:04just to confirm
24:06no one here actually thinks it was the lusker that was underneath giles parry's boat
24:11well i'm not ruling it out inspector
24:13apart from officer rose
24:14no of course we don't
24:16but
24:17there is more to it
24:18giles parry uploaded this vlog to his website two days before his death
24:23we checked his gps and he went back to the same exact location the next night
24:28here
24:31and this isn't the same location giles's body was found
24:34where his son benjamin went missing
24:37no that was two miles away here
24:39but the thing is
24:40when giles got back he deleted this video straight away
24:44so why
24:45catherine spoke to him shortly after
24:48and he seemed troubled
24:51everything all right giles
24:55he asked me about the commissioner
24:57knew i was friend with him and
24:59said he might need to speak with him
25:02is it to do with benjamin's disappearance
25:05i don't know
25:07maybe
25:16hang on
25:17hang on these are the same colden as he talked about in his vlog
25:19i don't know what happened there
25:20but it's clearly
25:22of significance
25:25we should go out there
25:27do a reenactment yeah
25:28same time
25:29same place
25:30same boat
25:31find out what this x
25:32is all about
25:33i was so hoping you was gonna say that inspector
25:35i can't believe you're going on a monster hunt
25:38that's not what we're doing
25:40that's not what you're doing
25:49i don't understand
25:51if you're going on a boat trip
25:53why can't i come
25:54because it might be dangerous
25:56well then i really want to come
25:57well you can't
25:59you're staying with catherine tonight
26:00we're getting you home first thing in the morning all right
26:03but
26:03we need to talk about dad still
26:09okay
26:11look about your dad
26:12i don't know what he told you
26:14but
26:14it certainly wasn't factual
26:15what he was arrested for
26:17it's serious
26:19and i should know because i was there when it happened
26:22what are you saying?
26:26hey louise
26:29listen
26:29there was no miscarriage of justice
26:31all right
26:32he wasn't falsely accused
26:34your dad
26:34is guilty
26:36so no
26:37i can't help you find new evidence
26:40and he'll be in prison for a while
26:43i'm sorry
26:46so what happens now?

30:52he run the boat excursion business in the harbour
30:55there's some sort of box under there
30:57it looks like it's time to wait
30:58stop it moving
31:00stop it moving
31:14Inspector, here's the box for salvage from the sea.
31:19Your gun. We found on your jet ski, Mr Mason.
31:26Your keys. Let's see if one of these fits, shall we?
31:33Your box.
31:45Cocaine, I'm guessing. Around two kilos. You'll be charged for this.
31:53Look, I'm just a middleman, all right?
31:56I don't sell it. I don't buy it.
31:59I just make some extra money moving it from A to B.
32:01Giles Parry was on to you, wasn't he?
32:03At first he thought it was the Luska making those noises beneath his boat.
32:10I didn't know he'd moored above me. Couldn't stop myself from hitting it when I came back up.
32:16That's what he heard. Me banging against the bottom of his boat.
32:19And when he went to the same location a second time to try and cut sight of it...
32:24Sir, the Luska. I'm gonna go back again tonight.
32:27He discovered what you were up to. That's why he was talking about going to the police.
32:32Said he might need to speak with him.
32:35I didn't know he'd seen me. When I went back to the harbour...
32:39I know what you're up to, Kelvin.
32:41I pleaded with him not to say anything to the police.
32:45Got to know Giles quite a bit over the years.
32:48Helped him with his research a couple of times, so...
32:50I thought he might give me a chance.
32:53And?
32:54He told me he'd think about it.
32:58But didn't reckon he could ignore it.
33:01The next thing he's found floating six miles out at sea, dead.
33:04I didn't do that to him, I swear!
33:06This gun of yours. What calibre is it?
33:10It's a nine millimetre. Why?
33:12Because we found a nine millimetre bullet on Giles Perry's boat.
33:15Is that a coincidence, Mr Mason?
33:17Yes, it is. I wasn't anywhere near his boat when he died.
33:21Mr Mason, you were questioned seven years ago...
33:24when Giles' son disappeared as a witness.
33:28Everybody around the harbour was. Was that got to do with anything?
33:32So, that also is just a coincidence?
33:35Yes, it is.
33:38Look, if it wasn't you then, where were you at 7.30 the night Giles Perry was murdered?
33:43Um...
33:44I was taking a drink with a guy who works for me.
33:47Um...
33:48A fella named Jackson.
33:50You fancy another?
33:51Call him, ask him, he'll tell you. I swear!
33:57But...
33:59There's something else you all need to know.
34:01Something that happened before Giles took his boat out.
34:05Poor guy.
34:07I went to speak with him.
34:09Jackson, I'll be back in a minute.
34:09To see if he changed his mind about talking with the police.
34:13When I turned the corner, he was arguing with someone.
34:18Giles called him Rory.
34:20I know your game, Rory.
34:22Giles said he had evidence of some kind.
34:25I didn't hear what.
34:27But he took out this folder and he gave it to him.
34:30Now that the Rory fella, he didn't seem too happy.
34:33Got a bit physical.
34:35He shoved Giles.
34:37Giles fell over and hurt himself.
34:40Then what did you do?
34:41I turned and left.
34:58Right, let's get over to the hotel.
35:00Let's interview our new suspect.
35:06Sir, with respect, shouldn't we just focus on solving the Giles Perry case right now?
35:13This isn't a cold case investigation.
35:15And we've got a new lead now.
35:17I just have this feeling the answer lies right here in front of me.
35:21If only I knew what it was.
35:23Okay.
35:28I admit we argued, Giles and I.
35:31It was more than an argument, Mr Lyons, from what we were told.
35:35Things might have got a bit physical, but what he was saying upset me.
35:39Which was what exactly?
35:41That I was only with Cara for her money.
35:45Rory only told me about this last night.
35:49Giles had to scrabble together enough money to pay a private investigator to look into Rory and his ex.
35:57That's what he found.
36:01So your previous partner invested in your business, which went bankrupt.
36:09She's still chasing you for money?
36:11It was a total mess I made.
36:14Financially.
36:15And personally.
36:17Everything in that file.
36:18It's all true.
36:20Apart from the suggestion that I'm doing the same again with Cara, because I'm not.
36:24I think that's why Giles wouldn't agree to the documentary.
36:27He thought that Rory would take the money.
36:29But I don't want a penny.
36:31I just want to be with Cara.
36:34So why did you follow Mr. Perry down to the harbour after dinner?
36:38Because he was being so unforgiving towards Cara.
36:41Saying that she was using their son's tragedy to line her own pockets.
36:44I wanted him to know the truth.
36:50We're adopting a baby.
36:53Starting a family.
36:55And it's taken all the courage in the world for her to do this.
36:58And you told him.
37:06All Cara wants is to be a family.
37:13I think it threw him.
37:15Then he picked up his things and got on his boat.
37:19And that's the last time you saw him?
37:23Mr. Lyons?
37:24Rory?
37:27He phoned me.
37:29And I got back to the hotel about half an hour later.
37:33He was out at sea.
37:35What did he say?
37:38He asked if I loved Cara.
37:41Like he needed to get it confirmed.
37:44And you said?
37:49Yes, I do.
37:50So very much.
37:57Then he just hung up.
38:17So a few minutes before he dies, Giles Perry phones his ex-wife's new partner to ask if he loves
38:23her.
38:23That doesn't sound like he was being attacked by a sea monster or murdered.
38:28Nope.
38:29It sounds to me like a guy who'd finally made his peace with the world.
38:33Which kind of makes me wonder.
38:35You know.
38:37Did Giles Perry take his own life?
38:39But then try to make it look like it was the Lusker that did it to prove to everyone that
38:44he was right all along?
38:46That doesn't feel right.
38:48Anyway, that doesn't explain the bullet.
38:49Why was that there?
38:51So what happened?
38:53He was alone on that boat, six miles out at sea, and our three suspects were all on dry land
38:59when he died.
39:00How and why could he end up dead?
39:05Maybe these two have the answer.
39:09Just come straight from the lab.
39:11Please tell me it's good news.
39:12There are no striation marks on the bullet.
39:16So they can't match it to Kelvin Mason's gun.
39:19Same make, same calibre, but...
39:20Hang on. No striation marks at all?
39:23Said they've been worn away by...
39:27...incrustation of marine organisms.
39:29Corrosion patterns suggest that bullet has been on the seabed for six to eight years.
39:34Basically, they're just saying the bullet is some sea debris.
39:36But that doesn't explain how we ended up on the boat in the first place.
39:47Did Giles Pire take his own life?
39:49The two liferings there are missing their ropes.
39:52Giles Pire worked as a paramedic back in the UK until he moved out here seven years ago.
39:57Now that the Rory fella, he didn't seem too happy.
40:00Got a bit physical.
40:02Is it to do with Benjamin's disappearance?
40:04I don't know.
40:06He asked if I loved Kara.
40:09Bingo.
40:10I know what happened to Giles.
40:12And how he ended up dead like that.
40:28Sir.
40:30We crack the case.
40:31Benjamin Parry's disappearance.
40:32I think I know what happened.
40:38Spot the difference.
41:01We have a lot to thank this little bullet for.
41:04It's helped us make sense of the present and the past.
41:08In the present, it's what solved the mystery of your ex-husband's death, Miss Smart.
41:13Leading me to finally understand why and how Giles Parry's body was found dead in the water,
41:19looking like the Lusker, the legendary sea monster he'd spent seven years searching for, had finally caught up with him.
41:26And in terms of the past?
41:29We'll come to that shortly.
41:31We'll come to that shortly.
41:32Throughout this case, we've worked on the basis that whatever happened to Mr. Parry, it all happened at the same
41:38time while he was out at sea.
41:40But we've now realised that his injuries were actually sustained in two separate locations.
41:48The first injury, the bruising to his stomach and the rupturing of his spleen, that happened on dry land, down
41:56by the harbour, when you and he tussled Rory.
42:00You're saying it was me?
42:02You will be charged with involuntary manslaughter.
42:05We know you didn't mean to kill Giles. Far from it.
42:09However, his subsequent fall from your push caused a serious internal injury.
42:17He just didn't know it at the time.
42:20Oh, my God.
42:22Giles was totally unaware that his life was slipping away.
42:25That's why he walked away from you, got on his boat and went out to sea.
42:31He was probably already a few miles out when he started to feel ill.
42:37Initially, some discomfort in his abdomen, feeling faint, feverish.
42:43But it was only by the time he reached his destination, six miles from land, that he fully comprehended what
42:51was happening.
42:52We know Giles used to be a paramedic, so it's safe to assume he worked out what was wrong, that
43:01he had minutes left to live.
43:04I'm so sorry.
43:06And if his imminent death wasn't a grim enough prospect, Mr. Parry also realized that if his body was found
43:12on deck, we would start to question how he was fatally injured.
43:16And the post-mortem would more than likely lead back to the altercation he had with you, Mr. Lyons.
43:21And subsequently, some time in prison.
43:24And knowing what you told him about yourself and Kara wanting to start a family, well, he didn't want to
43:31inflict any further suffering on you both.
43:33That's the way he phoned.
43:35And asked Rory if he loved me.
43:38That's why he needed to know, to be sure.
43:42Do you love her?
43:43He could protect you both by making it look like he'd killed himself.
43:52It was Dias Tomasi who noticed the ropes were missing from the life rings on Giles's boat.
43:57The two life rings there are missing their ropes, so let's hope no one goes overboard.
44:02I didn't think anything of it at first.
44:04But then when I started to understand what happened that day, that's when I realized why those ropes weren't there.
44:16And hopefully this call will confirm it.
44:20Yeah?
44:21They found the ropes tied to the boat's spare battery on the seabed.
44:25Okay. Thank you, Sergeant Fletcher.
44:29So, we think Giles knew that if he tied those ropes around his body tightly enough, then leave red markings.
44:38Friction burn.
44:39And therefore, when his body was found, he hoped this would also explain his internal injuries.
44:45The bruising.
44:46All so it would misdirect from you, Mr. Lyons.
44:51Any similarities to the Luska was a coincidence.
44:54If that's what happened, why was his body found floating on the surface?
44:59Because of this.
45:02As Giles sank to the seabed, by some quirk of fate, he saw this bullet.
45:09Maybe it got caught under a rock or wedged in some coral.
45:15We can't be sure.
45:17But there it was.
45:18A single bullet.
45:21In the same spot his son went missing.
45:25And after his recent discovery of the smuggling that was going on out at sea, not far from the same
45:30spot,
45:31Giles is already beginning to suspect that his son's, your son's disappearance might have been for more sinister reasons.
45:37Is it to do with Benjamin's disappearance?
45:41Maybe.
45:42So we believe he loosened the rope, grabbed the bullet, and allowed himself to float to the surface, determined to
45:52cling to life as long as possible.
45:55But by then, it was already too late for him to climb back on board his boat.
45:59So with his life ebbing away, Giles did one last thing.
46:04One final attempt to let everyone know what he discovered on the seabed.
46:10He threw this bullet onto the deck.
46:13A message from him to us to not give up on his son.
46:17But maybe Ben's killer was still out there.
46:22That's what you meant about the bullet helping with the past.
46:25My son's case.
46:28And has it?
46:37That bullet we found, it turns out it's been sat on the seabed for the last seven years.
46:46In the exact same location, Giles and Kara's son went missing.
46:52It was fired from your gun to kill Benjamin Parry.
46:58But he drowned at sea. Why are you no saying he was shot?
47:08This photograph was taken the day before Benjamin went missing.
47:14It's of him and his father outside your office.
47:19And this was taken by one of the Guadalupe police officers the day after he disappeared.
47:28Your witness statement is unremarkable in every way apart from this photograph.
47:36I had to get the magnifying glass out to really notice.
47:42But in this photograph of Benjamin and his father, the wall behind your desk is set farther back from the
47:51window than it is in this photograph of you where it appears 40 or 50 centimeters closer to it.
48:01Which left me wondering why less than 48 hours later, your office had seemingly shrunk.
48:12The only conclusion I could draw was because a new wall had been built.
48:18Leaving Benjamin's body at sea would have meant there was a possibility he could be found.
48:26And if he was, then it would be discovered that he'd been shot.
48:33Whereas if you hid his body and everybody assumed he drowned at sea, then maybe you'd get away with it.
48:45But where to hide it?
48:48We have a team at your office as we speak about to tear down that wall.
48:56So if I'm wrong about what's been hidden behind it the last seven years, you have nothing to worry about.
49:04But if I am right, now is your chance to start talking.
49:24That morning, seven years ago, it was real early.
49:34But when I got back up with the day's delivery, he was there recording me on his phone.
49:42For evidence.
49:44I mean, stupid idiot.
49:47Why would you do that?
49:48Because you left me no choice.
49:51I had to act fast.
49:53So I got the lockbox.
49:55Which you moved to a new location two miles away, where your smuggling continued until Giles Parry discovered what you
50:06were doing all these years.
50:09And Benjamin Parry's body?
50:16I took it ashore.
50:20I put them in one of the cases with all the diving gear.
50:26It's airtight so.
50:28I spent the whole day getting everything I needed for that wall.
50:34I spent the whole night building it.
50:37And I have lived with it every day since.
50:42Mind how you go?
50:43Uh-uh.
50:44Y'all let me know how it went, huh?
50:46You're with real pirate royalty now, huh?
50:49Knowing that poor boy is stuck behind that wall will haunt me forever.
51:00Galvin Mason, I'm arresting you for the murder of Benjamin Parry.
51:05You do not have to say anything, but it may harm your defense if you do not mention my question.
51:11Something which you do.
51:19This call is from a person currently in prison in Antigua.
51:25Solomon.
51:26I know you said you didn't want anything to do with me no more, but this isn't about me.
51:31It's about Eloise.
51:33I know she ran away from her aunt and came to you because she doesn't like it there.
51:37No, it's because you told her you were innocent and I'd get you out.
51:40You lied to her.
51:41Maybe I was a bit free and easy with the truth, but...
51:44She's there because she needs you.
51:46She doesn't even know me.
51:47She does a bit.
51:49I told her some things.
51:51That you were a good man.
51:56Solomon.
51:57Solomon, I can't...
51:58Because you are a man.
52:00I know I'm not.
52:02I have made a mess of pretty much everything in my life, but that's why I'm asking you this one
52:06thing.
52:07This one fear of her.
52:10Her mom and aunt are cool, but she's her dad's girl, you know?
52:14Me and her...
52:16There's something special.
52:19And her stupid father's got himself stuck in prison, so what?
52:23She really needs her uncle in her life right now.
52:26Because you're the closest thing she's got to me.
52:38So, that's the queen. She's the one to keep her eye on. All you have to do is find the
52:44lady.
52:53This one.
53:02Wrong again was here all along.
53:23I've had people arrested in Covent Garden for that, you know?
53:25Your dad taught you, I assume.
53:31Look, I'm...
53:33I'm not good at this kind of thing.
53:34OK?
53:36Maybe because I've never been an uncle before.
53:42What I'm trying to tell you...
53:43You don't know what you're doing.
53:47When you haven't had a proper family in your life, like I haven't,
53:53you kind of grow up assuming people don't want you or need you.
53:59But when you came to me, I should have been there for you and I'm sorry that I wasn't.
54:05But if you're up for giving your Uncle Merv a second chance, then maybe we can try again.
54:13And I can get to know my niece properly.
54:15Because however it might have looked, I would really, really like that.
54:23You wanna shake on it?
54:25We can do better than that.
54:29After all this time, I'd given up any hope of my son's body being returned to me.
54:35So to stand here knowing my boy will be returned home to England, it means the world to me.
54:43So I'd like to thank the St. Marie Police Force for all their hard work in achieving this.
54:50It's a divert from the station.
54:56Yeah.
54:59But I'd especially like to thank Commissioner Selwyn Paterson for uncovering a truth that no-one else was able to.
55:08I will be forever grateful.
55:17That's good, man.
55:18It's for you.
55:20You're the man.
55:31So, uh, that diverged.
55:33It's for you.
55:34Some guy named Damon?
55:36I mean, said to give him a card when he got the charm.
55:59I'm gonna go eat, Inspector. Sarge, Inspector's niece.
56:03Catherine invited us all.
56:04It feels like there's a lot to celebrate.
56:07And you can build up a hunger when you're hunting sea monsters, you know?
56:11Sea monsters?
56:12You didn't tell me we're hunting sea monsters.
56:14That's because we weren't.
56:15Well, not all of us anyway.
56:18All right, Eloise, this is Commissioner Paterson, my boss.
56:21It's a pleasure to meet you.
56:23You too.
56:25Right, let's go. Come on.
56:26You like playing card games, Commissioner Paterson?
56:29All right, let's not start going down that road, young lady.
56:32It demands seek for himself.
56:33As it happens, I do like playing cards.
56:36Yeah, but not the kind of card she wants to play.
56:39Honestly, Commissioner, in fact, everyone, do not play cards with this girl.
56:42Uncle Mark!
56:51Was she just trying to hustle the Commissioner?
56:54Yeah.
56:56Welcome to my family.
57:00You're wondering now what to do.
57:04Now you know this is the end.
57:09You're wondering how you should be
57:13For the way you did behave
57:20Death in Paradise will return.
57:23Who's watching who and who can be trusted?
57:26That's the question in the new series of The Capture.
57:29Watch now on iPlayer.
57:31Here on BBC One, joining Claudia later,
57:33Jimmy Carr and Jamie Dornan.
57:35That's at 10.40 after the news.
57:38You're wondering now what to do.
57:41Now you'll know this is the end.
57:44Yes, sir!
