00:00I'm going to be 601. Kevin is so happy the Rangers won't go 162-0.
00:04Is that your favorite part of opening day if they lose?
00:07Now I don't have to deal with this crap.
00:09I go back to this, and Bochy backed me up.
00:12It is almost statistically impossible.
00:14And also, the amount of pressure on your baseball team going into the playoffs
00:20would be off the page.
00:22I really did think about it last night, how silly Bochy must have thought I was being.
00:27But also how he was like, no, I know these guys.
00:30But when I presented that to him, in his mind he was going through,
00:34do you know how good you have to be?
00:38How elite you have to be?
00:40And that word isn't superlative enough.
00:43Elite isn't superlative enough for how excellent you have to be all season.
00:47All your pitchers have got to be healthy.
00:48Or as a manager, you make all the right moves.
00:51It's very difficult.
00:53And he must have been like, are you kidding me right now?
00:56Because of all my experience.
00:59But I'm going to go to, are you kidding me right now?
01:03That's not the exact verbiage you use.
01:05But give me cut number one.
01:07And that's essentially what Corey said in a cleaned up way about when this happened in the game.
01:11Evaldi, a glance over his left shoulder at first.
01:14We're scoreless in the first inning.
01:16Whoops.
01:16And here's the pitch.
01:18Schwarber swings and it's a long drive to left field.
01:20Way back goes Hagerty.
01:22To the wall.
01:23And that ball is gone.
01:26An opposite field home run for Kyle Schwarber.
01:29From the 2-1-4.
01:31LOL.
01:32That was a good joke.
01:33From the 9-0-3.
01:34That bookmark joke made me laugh out loud by myself in the car.
01:3810 out of 10.
01:39And from the 8-1-7.
01:41I thought it was a great joke, Kevin.
01:43Almost as funny as the Rangers' offense.
01:45Too soon?
01:46Yes.
01:48Their offense was terrible yesterday.
01:50How often do you think as a broadcaster, they go,
01:53Ted Gummett, why did I say that?
01:54Yeah.
01:55Oh, yeah.
01:55Scoreless in the third.
01:57And that's what I always think.
01:58That seemed like he threw that in because he was like,
02:01I need to fill one second.
02:02See.
02:04But that's the thing.
02:05Whenever they talk about the broadcaster's curse,
02:07again, shocker, I go back to probability.
02:10You talk so much.
02:12It's inevitable that that is going to come up.
02:15And people don't point out the 8 million times
02:18when you say something and nothing happens right after that.
02:23And in that moment, yes.
02:25That was definitely, I was keeping track of things
02:27and I was like, oh, come on.
02:29And you know how I feel about Schwarber.
02:30Yeah.
02:31For sure.
02:31You wanted him on the team.
02:32I think he's always doing something that I'm like,
02:35wow, I'd love to have Kyle Schwarber.
02:37And then he did that because that's what Kyle Schwarber do.
02:39And it wasn't the greatest game for Evaldi.
02:43And I wonder how much of him was looking at the scoreboard
02:45on the other side going,
02:47they aren't going to score any runs today, are they?
02:50But he's, he's, it's game one.
02:54Christopher Sanchez was very good.
02:56As we expected.
02:58And the Rangers, they did better in this,
03:02after they got him out of the game,
03:04which I expect and anticipate for a long time.
03:07They did better in the ninth inning.
03:09Right?
03:09Well, was it, he threw what, 87 pitches?
03:14And then they got 61 from the bullpen.
03:16So I'll take that.
03:17And yeah, the ninth inning was definitely better.
03:19They have to be more patient with their approach
03:22earlier in the game.
03:23But they were antsy and wanted to hit, man.
03:26Sanchez's changeup yesterday looked really, really good.
03:29And then Schumacher, he had a breakdown that I thought,
03:33well, that's probably always going to be difficult.
03:35He said, all the guys were telling him,
03:37you couldn't see a difference in the spin rate
03:39between the fastball and the changeup.
03:41And I thought, well, that has to be pretty difficult
03:43to navigate when you're up at the plate.
03:45You're like, ooh, pitch looks the same.
03:48I wonder how much of that is the way the sun was yesterday.
03:53Because, you know, it was going from shade, sun, shade, sun, weirdly.
03:57So I wonder how, or if that's just the way that Sanchez do.
04:01Yeah, I mean, probably.
04:02Like, you could make a really strong argument.
04:05He's top five, if not at least, top ten pitcher in the game.
04:09But the thing I immediately was worried about is,
04:12can we still not hit lefties?
04:14Uh, no.
04:15And maybe that's probably unfair.
04:17I just said, top five, surely we'd all think top ten pitcher in the game.
04:22So maybe that's an unfair metric.
04:25But when you watch it, I mean, the Rangers had eight hits,
04:27but four of those were in the first eight innings.
04:30And the other four were in the last inning.
04:33And I appreciate the fact that they showed some fight in the ninth inning,
04:37because if we're going to be honest,
04:39how often did you see a Rangers game or listen to a Rangers game right here
04:43on 105.3 The Fan last year, when they fell behind and you thought it's over?
04:48Yes, many times.
04:49I would think it's over.
04:51And I hope that they have this, the courage to continue playing games
04:56that they're paid to play.
04:59But, last year, Kevin, the M.O. of this team was they are going to fight.
05:04How many times did we have Bochy on?
05:06He was like, I know things aren't going right, but they're not giving up.
05:09And we were like, you're right about that.
05:11I don't know if I always felt that way.
05:13I think that we felt as fans that we had no – they couldn't win it in the ninth.
05:19They couldn't come back.
05:20And I'm not saying that – I'd love to see them jump on a pitcher early, Kevin.
05:24How awesome would that be?
05:25Yes.
05:25That would be something to take advantage of them in the second or third inning.
05:29The first inning would be awesome.
05:30Be one of those teams.
05:33But they've got to find that approach.
05:35Hopefully they get a little more – because it looked like Sanchez excluded.
05:39They were a little more like they were in spring training after he got out.
05:44And I don't know if that was just a, hey, guys, reset now.
05:47Or once you get into teams' bullpens, usually that's where they have the lesser of the two evils there.
05:54So, hopefully that's what the Rangers' thing is.
05:57They just got to calm down first game, jitters early, and then get back to what they do.
06:03Yeah.
06:04When you talk about getting those runs early, I saw – I don't remember who it was.
06:09So, I thought this was a hilarious response.
06:11They said they would have so much respect for Paul Skeens.
06:14If in the postgame, he said he was just really off and rattled because he had a two-to-nothing
06:19lead.
06:19And, like, I just – I love that.
06:21And that kind of reminds me at times of – I know our pitching staff was great last year.
06:30But, man, you would love it if they had fewer stressful pitches where you put up some crooked numbers.
06:36Not even in the first, first, second, third.
06:38And really got the opportunity to outpace things for your pitcher.
06:42The other thing, too, is, Kevin, Seager and Berger did what you liked yesterday.
06:48They got on base.
06:49They did.
06:50And seeing Seager hustle one out was pretty nice, too.
06:55Nemo, I needed on base a little bit more.
06:57Sure.
06:58Wyatt can't go 0 for 4 with a couple strikeouts.
07:00I think Josh Smith will be better.
07:03But then I looked at his at-bats versus Aaron Nola, and I was like, okay, he's 0 for 1.
07:09Maybe we'll get better than that.
07:10But Aaron Nola against – Kevin, it doesn't look like this Philadelphia series is going to be easy.
07:15Lizardo, Jesus Lizardo against McKenzie Gore is going to be a tough matchup.
07:19The next two pitching matchups are very, very good pitchers.
07:22So figuring out a way to force those guys to throw a lot of pitches early instead of saying, hey,
07:29I'm just swinging it.
07:30Look, man, you got three strikes for a reason.
07:33Use all of them if you can.
07:35And I know if you got one that you're going to groove, if it's in the nitro zone, as Alex
07:38says, make them pay.
07:40Show them something powerful.
07:42And I do see a lot of people saying, I'm not going to worry because, A, it's one game, and,
07:47B, it's Sanchez, and I totally get that.
07:49It is also a shout-out Friday from the 682.
07:52Shout-out to my brother Brandon for getting married in Justin on April 25th.
07:58Well, good luck ahead of time.
08:02What?
08:03What is – I don't know.
08:04Justin Northwest.
08:07Correct.
08:07Got you.
08:08Yes.
08:09Well, or maybe –
08:10Like the boot store?
08:11I'm pretty sure it says in Justin.
08:14Not to Justin.
08:15Okay.
08:16But either way.
08:17I didn't see that one, so I was asking.
08:19Yes.
08:19No, in Justice.
08:20I mean Justin.
08:22And then from the 903, this is a weird shout-out.
08:25My wife said, stop acting like a flamingo.
08:29But I put my foot down.
08:31I want to ignore this joke because I wanted to go back to the Rangers real quick, Kevin.
08:35That's how he – yeah!
08:37Stop it, Aiden.
08:37Aiden likes it.
08:38From the 972.
08:40And I agree with this wholeheartedly.
08:42Funny, Langford's very first pitch was a ball that was called a strike.
08:46It was inside – Kevin, it was a foot inside.
08:48Did you –
08:48It was called a strike, and I was like, why did we not do it right there?
08:52I know the answer.
08:53Did you – again, the discussion was, is apparently Schumacher has not demanded,
09:00but politely instructed that they perhaps wait until more high-leverage situations to use the ABS.
09:07Now, for Wyatt Langford, who it feels like got a job left and right last year,
09:11I don't know how long he'll last with that suggestion,
09:14but it does make sense that straightaway you'd be like, son of a –
09:18I agree.
09:19You don't want to get in your own head too early in a game.
09:22Like, you don't want to already be like, well, they're against us.
09:24But that pitch was like – it was like the umpire was like,
09:27we're going to show you again, Wyatt Langford.
09:30Good luck.
09:30Yeah.
09:31Well, I mean, at the same time, they're complaining about,
09:34we don't want to be embarrassed.
09:35And you're like, I mean, sure.
09:36Call the pitch.
09:37Yeah, do your job right.
09:38Right.
