00:03It was way more active than I think I had considered what a sperm whale birth
00:07might look like and all these animals sort of actively diving under and
00:11lifting the calf into the air onto their backs or their noses you know sets of
00:17two or three or four animals doing it at the same time it was unbelievable I mean
00:21we had been there for almost an hour at that point when delivery happened and
00:25the little one showed up and that first little boop of the head came up and out
00:29of the water and the boat had been silent and they weren't that far away maybe a
00:34few hundred meters initially but then they came and swam right by the boat
00:38lifting the calf out of the water I mean it was it was incredible
00:46never before have we had all of this technology to record from the air on a
00:52drone to record from underwater using underwater microphones all of the
00:57details of the interactions between the animals during a birth you know who was
01:03supporting the mom who physically lifted the baby and how they were related
01:07because we've known this family of sperm whales for the last 20 years right so it
01:12wasn't just animal a touching animal B we knew that it was the grandmother
01:16supporting the mother during the labor process
