00:01Only biological female athletes, whose gender has been determined by a one-time gene screening test, will be eligible to
00:09take part in the female events at the Olympic Games.
00:12The International Olympic Committee unveiled the new policy on Thursday, which essentially stops transgender athletes from competing in female events.
00:22They were previously eligible for the Games once they had been cleared by their respective federations.
00:28At the Olympic Games, as you know, the smallest little bit of an advantage can be what makes you a
00:37gold medalist or not.
00:39And for me, that comes back down to protecting the field of play and to having that field of play
00:46being safe and equal for all.
00:48I really believe that this policy is foundationally based in science and it's been led by medical experts.
00:57And it's been done with the best interests of athletes right at the heart.
01:04We know that this topic is sensitive and we hope that you've all seen the policy and we hope that
01:12you can read the policy knowing and understanding that we have taken into consideration all of our stakeholders from around
01:21the world, all the multiple views.
01:23This policy comes after an 18-month consultation phase, and it will now be applied for the Olympic Games, Youth
01:31Olympics and Games qualifiers.
01:33It will be in line with the principles of the United States government's policy, which bans transgender athletes from competing
01:41in school, college and professional events in the female category in the U.S., which is hosting the Olympics in
01:482028.
01:49U.S. President Donald Trump later hailed the IOC decision.
01:53Many of you know me quite well and were following me along the campaign and know that this was a
02:00priority for me way before President Trump came into his second term.
02:06So there's not been any pressure from us to deliver anything from anybody outside of the Olympic movement.
