00:05This time, on Highway Through Hell, a pricey load puts reliable in a pinch.
00:19Merv tries to land a riverside catch, and Otto is under pressure.
00:29On a chip truck recovery, on British Columbia's Coquihalla Mountain Pass, freight on its way
00:49to the coast, must survive the shifting conditions.
00:55You can never underestimate Mother Nature on the Coquihalla.
00:58One day it could be sunny, the next day it could be a snowstorm.
01:0350 kilometres north of Merritt.
01:06This route's about to get busy.
01:1210-4-1 on the ditch sideways.
01:18Heading to the crash in a reliable 50-ton record.
01:22We're on our way.
01:24Operator John Toggs.
01:28Where are you now?
01:30Just past the name of Merritt exit.
01:32All perfect.
01:34Andy's just behind me.
01:36Between me and Andy, we've got the truck power out here.
01:39I have no doubt that we'll be able to get this job done.
01:44It's go time.
01:45Lead operator Andy Cullum follows in the 50-ton tri-drive, heavy metal.
01:52Always get a rush when you pull up.
01:57He went in with quite a bit of speed, and he's pretty far down off the road.
02:08The semi is outfitted with a refrigerated sea-can trailer full of meat.
02:14Good old sea-cans.
02:16Downside to sea-cans is they're more solid steel, solid walls.
02:21How much weight?
02:22I was told it's 55,000.
02:25They usually pack a little bit more weight into them,
02:27so there's a lot that can go wrong when you're pulling them over.
02:35Heading south to the port of Vancouver,
02:38the driver lost control, swerving into the ditch
02:44and landing his cargo 30 feet down the embankment.
02:52Three axles, heavy.
02:54After the impact...
02:56Broken tie rod.
02:58Not gonna steer very well.
02:59The truck and trailer are in rough shape.
03:04Really gonna be fun.
03:06And the premium load has a price tag...
03:11Of a quarter million dollars.
03:15It's extremely expensive meat, and we cannot let this spoil.
03:19Oh, ouch.
03:44Oh, ouch.
03:47You like between bird and cowl.
03:50High on the Coquihalla.
03:52How much weight?
03:53I was told it's 55,000.
03:56John and Andy face a heavy weight recovery.
03:59We'll get one of us on each side of it and get it over.
04:02But the initial call...
04:04Is that what Jazz's plan was?
04:06Went to Coquihalla Towing's Jazz Saran.
04:10What's up, buddy?
04:12What's the plan there, Big Shoots?
04:14How's it going?
04:15John and Andy are pretty experienced operators.
04:18But at the end of the day, it's my reputation.
04:20My name on the door.
04:24It's on top now.
04:26Launching his company just two years ago...
04:29We're done.
04:30You did it.
04:31Jazz purchased Mighty Moe from Jamie Davis...
04:35Let's get her going.
04:36...and has been learning the ropes of the tow biz...
04:40Get it to your truck and then hold it.
04:42I'll get the front end over.
04:43...with help from outfits like Reliable.
04:48Back in business, baby.
04:52Jazz is younger, but he's secured this wreck.
04:55We're just here in support.
04:57If he's got questions, I'm going to be there to answer for him.
04:59Stand it up, pull it back.
05:01Okay.
05:02Between the weight of the load and the distance away from the roadway...
05:08It's pretty steep, Noel.
05:09You got 250 tons for a reason.
05:11I don't think Jazz has handled something like this before.
05:15Double.
05:16Singled.
05:17Also here is an extra pair of hands...
05:20Singled right through.
05:22...reliable's Dalen Golish.
05:25With containers, rigging points are an issue.
05:28We only have corner pockets.
05:30Yeah.
05:31The weight is an issue.
05:32It's very heavy.
05:35It's going to be a challenge.
05:36Definitely glad we have 250 tons.
05:39We're going to use a low line...
05:41...to help keep the truck level as we pull on it.
05:47Unless you got a better idea?
05:48No.
05:51Jazz is a good guy.
05:52He's learning.
05:55They're all learning good.
05:57Low lines to the axles...
05:59...and high lines to the corner.
06:01They'll just stand right up like nothing.
06:04John and Andy start the rollover.
06:15Hey, John.
06:18But moments in...
06:20You might want to have more pressure on the top line.
06:23I can't get any.
06:25John's wrecker is struggling.
06:27He's off the ground, Andy.
06:29We have to keep our booms pretty low...
06:31...because we're pulling as far as we are...
06:33...and they're leaning in the trucks pretty good.
06:35I'm pulling my truck over.
06:40Heavy load here.
06:57You're training from Kilowack in.
07:00300 kilometers southwest.
07:02Tell you, it's like driving up a river.
07:07Aggressive towing's 50-ton rotator follows the Fraser River.
07:12An old boat sank.
07:14With lead operator, Chris Mervin.
07:17They called and said they needed a hand getting back to shore.
07:20Mad props Marine go around and recover sunk boats.
07:23Every now and then he runs into one where he just needs a little extra pulling power.
07:27So they need you on standby down here.
07:29And backing up Merv tonight, Rob Lewis.
07:32This boat has been in the spot for about a month.
07:36So now we're going to get in there and get this thing hauled up.
07:41On the northern tip of Anasis Island...
07:48I think something is starting to show right there.
07:52The dropping tide starts to reveal tonight's salvage.
08:00There's the boat.
08:01There's the boat.
08:03I think it says low tides right around midnight.
08:06This boat, they had it tied to a piling.
08:09It eventually got a leak.
08:10The water took over and that was it for that boat.
08:14They're here.
08:16The Mad Props Marine crew arrives, led by owner Jeremy Birch.
08:24We can start to see the roof.
08:27We got a problem on the south coast with, you know, direlect and abandoned vessels.
08:32This is one of them.
08:33We've removed dozens and dozens of direlect vessels and materials from the river netting and sunk docks and vehicles and
08:43the list goes on.
08:45Let's go!
08:47Let's move it.
08:49Working BC's rugged coast and the Fraser River,
08:53Mad Props specializes in difficult cleanup operations.
08:58A boat is stranded.
09:01Tonight, they're governed by the tides.
09:05Float it before it gets grounded out so that we don't have to stay here all night.
09:09Game A is to try to refloat the boat.
09:11We hold it upright while the tide's receding and then find out why it sunk, plug the holes.
09:18They'll need to finish before the tide dips too low to remove the boat.
09:23Get the containment all ripped apart, get them out of the way.
09:27And then we'll do the salvage.
09:35North of Merritt on Highway 5.
09:38I'm pulling my truck over.
09:41The reliable team up is struggling.
09:44Come on John, boom up, lift that thing.
09:47With a meaty sea can.
09:49Boom up!
09:51This load is probably worth around $250,000 to $300,000.
09:55So the customer has requested us not to unload it, just pick it up and put it on the road.
10:02Hey bud, go ask for the real manifest.
10:05This is definitely heavier than you're being told it is.
10:08We got two 50 ton winches on it.
10:11150,000 pounds of pulling power and it's not even budget.
10:15She is heavy.
10:17Hold on.
10:19Let it down.
10:23Working on the live highway, we have limited space.
10:27Angles are a little different than what you need.
10:29Why are you so high off the ground?
10:31That's what I'm asking you.
10:32You're not getting any lift.
10:34No.
10:36Straps would do all the work if we can get one over the top, you know what I mean?
10:40Dalen...
10:40I bet you it would just roll right up.
10:43Suggests a different approach.
10:45Yeah.
10:46It's my opinion anyway.
10:48Cross-strap to the top of it.
10:52Wrapping straps across the far side of the container will give each wrecker a straighter angle on the pole, maximizing
11:02their winch power and cradling the semi upright.
11:09We ready?
11:12With the straps in place...
11:16Yeah, look at that. It's already coming.
11:19Round two begins.
11:31Is he going through the roof?
11:34He going through the roof?
11:38If we rip open a wall, then his load of meat is now garbage.
11:44Is that just snow or is he going through the roof?
11:46I can't tell.
11:51Hang on, hang on.
11:52Hang on, hang on.
11:55What's going on with the Highway 5?
11:58North of Merritt.
12:00Looks like somebody had a boo-boo in the district.
12:04Is that just snow or is he going through the roof?
12:06Andy and John's sealed sea can is buckling under pole pressure.
12:12It's going to break.
12:14Hang on, hang on.
12:17I'm scared to go look.
12:20I'm scared to go look.
12:20It would be a pretty bad thing if we ripped open a wall because they're not allowed to expose that
12:25load.
12:31It's not true, it's kinking though.
12:34That definitely speaks to the weight of this, pulling crossways on a steel box.
12:38To be able to kink it like that, you're pulling on some serious weight.
12:44They'll need more might to finish the job.
12:48I think if we add Mo to it.
12:50Okay.
12:51Because you can get Mo square here.
12:54Square?
12:54Yeah.
12:55Okay.
12:56John and Andy's trucks, they're strong trucks but this is 50 or 60 feet away from the curb and that
13:02would mean that we would need more pulling power.
13:07So, we're going to put Mighty Mo in there and do it right.
13:11Let's get the lines on, let's go.
13:18With Mighty Mo's lines on the top corners, they'll spread the force of all three wreckers across six points to
13:28lift the sea can without breaking it.
13:35That's good.
13:39Ready?
13:41Yeah.
13:43Okay, let's get this done.
13:45It's definitely old school.
13:47But Mighty Mo is a pretty powerful truck.
13:50Good to have it here.
13:58Pull!
14:03It's not the fastest truck but it pulls hard.
14:12Got to get that back end up.
14:18Can't keep up to you.
14:23John, get tight!
14:43You see that? You just need some old iron here.
14:46Saved the day, Jazz.
14:47Looks like it.
14:54Oh.
14:56But with the trailer upright.
14:58Look at the axles.
15:01Andy spots trouble.
15:03I don't think this thing can go down the road.
15:05No.
15:06No.
15:06Those are broken.
15:08The trailer's in pretty rough shape.
15:09I don't know if it's going to hold together.
15:11If we have to try to pull it up the bank.
15:14Where's the adjuster guy?
15:16Andy brings in Wayne Dubow.
15:19Yep.
15:21Look at the axles.
15:23To assess the valuable load.
15:26Wayne is the insurance adjuster for this.
15:30He is in charge of how we do things.
15:35We can't get it out because the trailer is compromised.
15:38The wheels will not turn to get it back up onto the road.
15:42What if we just transfer it?
15:45If we open the doors, we're $250,000 gone.
15:48It's better to pay for the rotator for anything.
15:51Or a crane.
15:54A 200-ton crane, you're only going to need one.
15:57Okay. I can find someone right now.
16:00Jazz makes the call to delay the recovery and save the load.
16:06I'm going to call my buddy up down the coast.
16:08He has a bunch of cranes.
16:10Our plan is to lift the container out with the 250-ton crane
16:15that's going to be here in the morning.
16:17Once it's on the land, we'll come back and pull the chassis out.
16:20Sounds like a plan.
16:22Jazz made the decision to let the crane finish it tomorrow,
16:25and that's a lot easier on us, so he did pretty good.
16:30We'll see how it goes.
16:3310-4, we'll see you in the morning.
16:39Three hours southwest on the Fraser River.
16:43All right, I'll move my truck, buddy.
16:44Okay.
16:46Aggressive is in a race against the falling tide.
16:50We're going to connect to this boat.
16:52We're going to try to hold it upright so that it's sitting level under the water.
16:56We've got it rigged once we get them hooked up.
16:59If everything goes as planned, we'll pull it and ride it.
17:08Okay.
17:09Rotting an old derelict boat.
17:11They don't like being pulled on real hard, that's for sure.
17:15Hopefully what we can hook up to on it is willing to hold up to the forces we're going to
17:19apply.
17:24With a strap already rigged to a cleat on the stern,
17:29and a new strap shackled to the bow,
17:32Merv will upright the boat for Jeremy to pump out the water and float it off-site.
17:45Okay.
17:46Okay, Merv?
17:48I'll feed you some cable here, Jeremy.
17:51So, let's just put some tension on and see what it does.
17:54Okay.
17:56Okay.
18:00Got her?
18:01Yep.
18:06We're moving.
18:07Keep going?
18:08Yep.
18:09You know, I'm a land tow truck and he's a marine tow truck, so it works.
18:13Yep, we're coming.
18:17Keep going.
18:21We've got the bow of the boat almost out of the water here,
18:24and the stern's coming up now, so...
18:28The tide's working with us, everything's working out.
18:31Boats are kind of finicky.
18:33It's very hard to know exactly what you're playing with,
18:37or if you're going to break a piece off the boat.
18:44What?
18:49It's very hard here.
18:51On the Fraser River's Anasis Island...
18:57Whoa.
18:58Too much.
19:01...Merv loses his grip on a riverbank recovery.
19:05The whole cleat let go.
19:07Something's going to let go.
19:08Something always lets go and solve it.
19:09I don't know.
19:10I don't know.
19:11We were only hooked up to a cleat.
19:13And it's into a rotten boat, so...
19:16The cleats are attached through fiberglass,
19:18generally into a little piece of wood.
19:20Much different than us grabbing a diff or a frame rail,
19:23trying to pull a semi-oak.
19:25With the cleats ruled out...
19:27We've got to re-rig the stern.
19:30Jeremy looks for something stronger.
19:40Okay, come up alongside here.
19:42Don't lose that strap.
19:43That's a pretty beat up boat.
19:45Pretty rotten.
19:45They're never nice to work on.
19:47Particularly when they're half sunk.
19:50Okay, now send me.
19:51Send me it.
19:53Beauty.
19:54We're just trying to add an extra point wrapping around the cabin there
19:57and see if we can share enough of the load and the force
20:00to try to finish getting this boat upright.
20:04With Bertha rigged to the cabin...
20:08Okay, just take the weight, Merv.
20:10Merv can pull harder and make up for lost time.
20:24Okay.
20:35And right on schedule...
20:37It's sitting perfect.
20:39The boat uprights.
20:42We've got a huge dropping tide tonight, so...
20:44Right now Mother Nature's assisting us.
20:47We'll get pump in.
20:48We'll get it floating.
20:51Oh, it's moving out quicker than it's going in for sure.
20:55It's floating.
20:59have a look have a listen where the water's coming in we'll patch it float it and tow it
21:03out of here that's a nice boat rob yeah this boat wasn't in very good shape when it sank
21:11and it was in worse shape when it came up with the water pumped out of the interior
21:19there she is right there jeremy locates the source of the leak that is why the boat sunk
21:26that hose blew out so we're gonna patch it with trusty spray foam and uh then we'll cover that
21:32foam with plywood and screw it in we're out of here thank you man team aggressive did awesome
21:39the merv always pulls through he's gonna tie it up to his other boat and take it up river and
21:45get it
21:45hauled out marine salvage is fun it's like keeping a highway open you want to keep the rivers open
21:50and free-flowing all right robbie rivers open let's get out of here buddy
21:56and we're on our way home
22:15oh bill in there right on the north side of the coquihola pass
22:24a 200 ton crane has arrived to finish the sea can recovery looks like they got the weights all good
22:33to go jazz is responsible for the quarter million dollar lift under wayne's watchful eye
22:41should be a easy lift now hopefully
22:49last night the driver went off the highway sending his lucrative load of meat
22:57into the ditch
23:00now jazz is on a deadline
23:02we're ready to go
23:04to keep the cargo on route to its overseas destination
23:09this load has got to be inspected and shipped out so we are on a tight timeline
23:15we're all rigged up looks like yeah
23:17the pressure's on
23:26the crane crew has rigged straps to all four corners
23:31up up and away
23:35yeah she's starting to come now
23:38but with the sea can over 30 feet away
23:42it's kind of leaning over
23:44oh yeah
23:46oh
23:49at a weight of 70,000 pounds
23:53he's got to boom in a little
23:55yeah
23:56it's just within the load limits
23:59of the crane's 200 foot boom
24:05swing it out
24:06you can't have that swing
24:09gets the heart pumping
24:14single lane for record recovery
24:16on highway 5
24:19oh
24:20three hours from the coast
24:22you can't have that swing right
24:24jazz has enlisted a crane
24:28there he goes
24:29he's getting her up now
24:30to get the 70,000 pounds he can
24:33stay clear
24:34back on its way to port
24:37it's nice being back in the daylight
24:39but
24:40there's much more traffic as well
24:42i'll watch out for that
24:44briefly holding traffic
24:45good
24:49the quarter million dollar container
24:53is swung safely on deck
24:56yee-haw
24:58finally man
24:59let's get that delivered
25:00the load's safe
25:02the seal's still intact
25:03and it's gonna make it on time
25:05to the shipyard
25:09let's get her rigged up
25:11but jazz still needs to recover the tractor and trailer
25:15we have this big crane here
25:17we're just like why not just lift it up
25:19put it onto the road right
25:21crane's way better than a wrecker here
25:23just because we don't have to move any barriers
25:26and we can just pick it up
25:27put it on the side
25:29with traffic still flowing
25:32the crane swings the trailer
25:38up onto the road
25:41there you go
25:42but the empty trailer chassis
25:45yeah that's good right there
25:47is the easy part
25:49give it a whirl and see if we can lift that truck up here
25:52it'll save a lot of time and effort
25:54the mangled truck is much riskier
25:58it would be better if we could get something in
26:00like a frame rail or something
26:01your call on this one
26:03what you want to try lifting it out
26:05or you want to just pull your cables and suck it out
26:08if we rip the tractor open right now
26:11while pulling it up
26:12all the liability would be on us
26:14yeah i can rig it up for you guys
26:18it'll be fine
26:20placing his trust in the crane crew
26:23ready to run the leaf spring?
26:25yeah
26:26everything rides on jazz's rigging
26:29so we've got to be really careful what we do
26:31and what our next steps are
26:33you want it?
26:34I'll dump right here
26:38jazz sets up a web of chains
26:41hooked to the axles and front tow pin
26:44okay
26:48but even if his chains hold
26:52coming up
26:54there you go
26:55the busted up tractor may not
27:00structural integrity is not really there
27:04moment of truth
27:06i'm just visualizing the fact that we're ready to break loose at any moment here
27:11to jazz's relief
27:17you're good
27:19the tractor touches down in one piece
27:24i wouldn't have done it any other way
27:26working together
27:29it's a win for everyone
27:31hey buddy
27:32missed all the fun
27:35these guys know what they're doing
27:37yeah
27:37i would have done the same thing
27:40a good plan
27:42me making the call to get the crane out here was great
27:45and it built up our confidence as well
27:47we're just ready for the next wreck
27:49so we can tackle it down
27:51makes our life easier
27:53hook it up and tow it back when these guys are done
27:55jazz did really good
27:56he was able to get it over
27:58and he did pretty good at leading the charge
28:01he's figuring it out pretty good
28:04that's pretty much it
28:05it's a wrap
28:06okay buddy
28:07we'll see you at the yard
28:08all right
28:10one of my goals is to bring the industry together
28:13that's the theme that i preach with my team
28:15but the only way it works is that they work together
28:39here's a little bit of flush there
28:41500 kilometers north
28:44treacherous conditions on quennell's highway 97
28:48be extremely careful
28:50have drivers on edge
28:54it's pretty wet and dirty
28:56a 50 ton auto wrecker takes a priority call
29:01it's a pellet plant just outside of town
29:04with owner rob barber
29:07i'm heading out to a chip truck that's fallen over in the ditch
29:10and lost its load
29:13following in a 25 ton heavy
29:15see what we can do
29:17rob's nephew and second in command
29:20kyle langwa
29:22being a connector highway up to alaska
29:25this highway can get busy
29:27highway 97 is the most important route
29:30it's the essential route to get anywhere up north
29:34and you got to keep that traffic flowing
29:37that's not good
29:40trailer slid over
29:41and toppled the truck onto its side
29:46well
29:47let's go see what they get to do
29:53there's a mirror
29:54the semi
29:55was carrying wood chips into the pellet plant
29:58when it misjudged the turn
30:01i mean it's super light eh
30:02it's honest
30:04these walking floor chip trailers are super expensive
30:07and there's probably a waiting list to get one
30:09so we'll try to make sure we don't hurt it
30:11so it can go back into use
30:15you want me up front or
30:17yeah i'll go on the trailer
30:18because i can put my room up high
30:19okay
30:20let's do a quick closure
30:23with just one lane in each direction
30:28they'll have to close down the critical highway
30:33we don't want to close it
30:34so we try to keep it as short as we can
30:38pre-rigging high lines from the 50 ton
30:41to the top of the trailer
30:47the 25 ton will hook to the tractor
30:51just trying to get set up before we go on the road
30:55so there's less time
30:58buggering up traffic
31:00see what happens
31:05we're going to close it for a couple minutes if that's okay
31:09keeping the closure to a minimum
31:14Kyle and Rob
31:17waste no time getting started
31:20other people have places to go
31:22a lot of the times it's essential for them
31:24if it's essential for them it makes it essential for us
31:29that's it
31:30but rushing the flip
31:33could damage the specialized trailer
31:36pull more in the front
31:46wood chip trailers are not meant to be pulled on on the side
31:52not having a roof
31:53they're kind of flimsy
31:57you can pull through a wall pretty easily
31:59if you don't pull on it just quite right
32:14north of quenelle
32:16on highway 97
32:19there's only one way to go man
32:31auto specialized chip trailer
32:33is upright
32:34it'll wear a weight in the corner than we hoped
32:38but wrenching it onto the road
32:40is risky
32:42these walking floor chip trailers
32:43it's all aluminum so you can't pull on them with any weight
32:47get off the road for a bit
32:48yeah
32:49okay
32:50with traffic building
32:51they pause to recalibrate the plan
32:55when we have to shut the highway down
32:57that's a lot on an operator's mind
32:59we don't want to be there too long
33:10yeah let things blow for a few minutes
33:12and then we'll put the trailer up on the road
33:15and separate it
33:17the damaged tractor is likely a write-off
33:21once that north goes by
33:23I'll do another quick closure
33:25but Rob wants to keep the trailer
33:28as close to working condition as possible
33:33okay
33:36re-hooking to the rear
33:38let's hope it moves
33:41Rob avoids tugging on the fragile wall
33:46it's coming
33:48you just want the trailer to come straight up the banks
33:51so you're not pulling unnecessarily hard on something
33:57that's good
34:01with the trailer back on level ground
34:05it's good for single lane now
34:10traffic is moving again on the critical route
34:15so now that we got it up on the road
34:17we're separating the tractor from the trailer
34:19keep going, keep going
34:23you've succeeded
34:23the public can keep rolling
34:25and they can keep going to where they need to go
34:27and the specialized chip trailer
34:30can soon get back to work
34:33it's been a good day
34:34we didn't do any damage
34:36and we were able to kind of clean things up
34:38as quick as we could
34:39and keep things moving along
34:47it's a little better than Hope
34:51500 kilometers south
34:52in Hope, B.C.
34:55it doesn't last pretty long
35:00a Jamie Davis 30-ton heavy
35:03rolls out on Highway 1
35:06I take pride in my ride
35:09with operator
35:11Quinn Wiley
35:12I've been towing for about 13 years now
35:15this year Jamie put me in a 2020 Peterbilt HR-130
35:21so this is your first wreck using a big truck
35:24yeah it does
35:26Jamie's newest recruit
35:27Maxim Chamberlain Norman
35:29will be assisting on his first heavy recovery
35:33I'm going to show you
35:34teach you
35:36how to hook up
35:37how to recover
35:38how to do all these things
35:39the same way I was taught
35:41perfect
35:43Quinn
35:43he's kind of the go-to guy
35:45in Hope for anything heavy
35:47for Max on his first job here
35:49he couldn't ask for a better place to land
35:52to actually get some training
35:5480 kilometers up the Fraser Canyon
35:57they pull over
35:58just past Boston Bar
36:01oh that's a long ways down
36:06this wreck is steeper than what I was told
36:10and from the looks of it
36:12there's a lot of parts
36:13not attached anymore
36:14wow wee
36:16looks like he rode the rail for a bit eh
36:18I think so
36:20on scene to help fish out the battered SUV
36:24is long haul driver Mark Richards
36:27there's no such thing as a little job
36:29a small job
36:30a big job
36:31can cause you pain
36:33if you don't pay attention
36:36and you're going to pull it out from the back
36:38now we're going to think our best bet's going to be
36:40grab it by the front and pull it up
36:42we got that rock to worry about
36:44between them and the wreck
36:47there's a minefield of boulders
36:49there's some rocks
36:50and there's no wheels
36:52so you have to know
36:54before to pull where it's going to go
36:56have you pulled the drive shafts?
37:00it is my first big wreck
37:01it's been maybe at least 10 years
37:04that I'm waiting for what I'm doing right now
37:06so like
37:07I like that
37:08and you know
37:09I'll get better and better
37:10sometimes you can tie it up
37:12with a strap
37:13but
37:13in this case
37:17years ago
37:18I was Max
37:18I was going down the hill
37:20up and down
37:23learning different ways
37:25to hook on to things
37:29Max
37:30make the chain tighter
37:38he's done one or two smaller recoveries
37:41that aren't this major
37:43so it's a good learning experience for him
37:47Mark
37:48Max
37:50make sure you guys are out of the way
37:52scrambling to a safe spot
37:55I don't want to be here
37:56so I can see the truck
38:08Max's lesson
38:09gets off
38:12to a rocky start
38:14nope
38:15that was definitely not a moment I wanted
38:19I got an accident here
38:20just on the other side of this corner
38:21north of Hope
38:24on highway 1
38:25in the Fraser Canyon
38:28that rock is going to be a giant pain
38:31Quen walks Maxim
38:33through his first heavy recovery
38:35a wrecked SUV
38:37down 60 feet
38:39of rough terrain
38:42there's rock
38:43and it's everywhere
38:45and you can't blow the oil pan
38:46or you can't blow the fuel thing
38:53nope
38:54that was definitely not a moment I wanted
38:58but confident in his rigging
39:01hope for the best
39:02expect the worst
39:03Quen keeps pulling
39:09that should get us over the rock
39:13come on girl
39:16keep going
39:18she is
39:20the SUV clears the rocks
39:23keep going
39:23but other obstacles
39:25will be less forgiving
39:27actually
39:28Mark
39:28grab your truck
39:30and run the winch line
39:31because it's getting too close
39:32to those trees
39:33it's not wanting to go
39:35where I want it to go
39:36so I need to
39:37come up with a better plan
39:38so now we're just going to run
39:40the winch line out
39:41hook it on
39:44okay you got the cable
39:46yeah
39:47adding a line to the front
39:49Quen can steer the wreck
39:52should help reduce that
39:54risk of it going into the tree stump
39:59he's going
40:08that'll do it
40:10and at the top of the hill
40:12a concrete no post
40:15remains a barrier
40:17to get this
40:18SUV over the no post
40:20it's going to take a bit
40:27of finessing
40:28Quen must carefully
40:29coordinate the two wreckers
40:31to clear the two foot wall
40:34now that we're right up close
40:36now we're going to start
40:37pulling away from each other
40:38so what I'm going to do
40:39is I'm getting him to move up
40:41and then I'm going to
40:42slowly pull as he's turning
40:44that should
40:45yeah
40:46that way it should
40:47it should come right over gently
40:49because we don't want to be
40:50rough with the vehicle
40:51perfect
40:52I'm not a teacher
40:53in a training school
40:54by no means
40:55but for Max
40:56to be on his first time
40:58swamping and going down the bank
41:00and coming back up again
41:01a little looser
41:04a little more
41:05there you go
41:06there's lots of opportunity
41:07for him to learn here
41:10Quen uses a re-rigged line
41:12to swing the rear over
41:16there okay
41:17but as the back wheels
41:19come over the edge
41:20it's a bit risky
41:22but as long as you're paying attention
41:23you should be fine
41:25the wreck
41:28nearly collides
41:29with the boss's property
41:32heart attack moment
41:35that was close
41:36that was close from the truck
41:37we're a couple inches away
41:39that's a phone call
41:40I really don't want to make
41:41to Jamie
41:43okay
41:44pull
41:47at last
41:50the SUV is out
41:53get the car ready
41:54for transport
41:55and then
41:55we're out of here
41:58everything went really well
42:00we got the truck
42:00out of the ditch
42:01I didn't hit my truck
42:02it's a successful end
42:05to Maxim's
42:06first
42:06big wreck
42:10Max did really well
42:11he'll be one of the guys
42:12I call
42:13when I get a wreck
42:14and need
42:14need a second guy
42:16working with a big wrecker
42:18today
42:18it's a dream
42:19and it came true
42:20so now it's
42:22not a dream no more
42:23you're good to go
42:27old guys rule
42:28but we still need
42:28some young talent
42:29okay
42:30let's get out of here
42:30let's get out of here
42:32that's kind of a new
42:33evolving thing
42:34at our place
42:34so you know
42:35re-energize ourselves
42:38and
42:39hate to say it
42:41but you know
42:42we need that
42:49next time
42:51on Highway Through Hell
42:52a split semi
42:55hold on
42:56hold on
