00:02In a world teetering on the edge of chaos, with old empires just crumbling to dust, a leader from
00:08a little-known tribe on the frontier would rise up. He'd lay the groundwork for something new,
00:13an empire that would stand for nearly 700 years. This is the story of its founder, Osman I.
00:20I mean, that quote really says it all, doesn't it? It just perfectly captures the scale of what
00:25we're talking about here. So how in the world does a small, overlooked tribe on the fringe of a dying
00:31empire become a global superpower? Well, it all kicks off with the vision and the sheer will of
00:37one man. Okay, so to really get a grip on Osman's incredible rise, you've got to understand the
00:44world he was born into. The late 13th century, it was a total mess. The old powers that had run
00:50the
00:50show for centuries were falling apart, and that left this huge power vacuum right in the heart
00:55of the medieval world. Just look at this. The whole region was basically a pressure cooker.
01:00Coming from the east, you had the Mongol storm. They'd already sacked Baghdad and completely
01:04shattered the Seljuk sultanate, basically turning it into their puppet. And then for the west,
01:09you had the Byzantine empire. It was weaker, yeah, but it still held this chain of super strong
01:13fortresses. So the Seljuks, they were stuck, squeezed from both sides, and their state was just
01:18disintegrating. And in all that chaos, well, that's where opportunity lives. And right into this
01:24chaos steps Osman. He's only 24 years old when he takes over leadership of the Kayi tribe from his
01:31famous father, Ertigrol. Their people, they're living right on that razor's edge, the border with
01:37the Byzantine empire. I mean, talk about a heavy burden for a young guy. But he was absolutely
01:43determined to build on what his father had started. So you're probably thinking his first big move would
01:49be against the Byzantines, right? Well, not so fast. Before Osman could even think about expanding
01:56outward, he had to deal with a serious threat that came from inside his own family. Can you believe
02:02it? His own uncle, Dündar, decided he should be the leader and even teamed up with local Byzantine
02:08governors to try and take him down. This was Osman's first real test. And he didn't hesitate. He acted with
02:15incredible speed and skill, completely crushing the rebellion and uniting the tribe under his
02:20command. It sent a crystal clear message. Before building an empire, you've got to secure your own
02:25house first. So with the home front locked down, Osman could finally turn his attention outward. And
02:32this, this is where we really start to see his genius. He wasn't just another warrior. He was a
02:38brilliant strategist who thought outside the box in ways his enemies just couldn't see coming.
02:44Now, Osman's first targets weren't the big Byzantine armies. Nope. He went after the local fortresses,
02:51which were run by these governors they called Tekfers. And these guys, they completely underestimated
02:56him. They just saw some minor raider, a small-time nuisance. They were about to find out just how
03:01wrong they were. The way he took Kulakaya Sarcastle is the perfect example of his clever tactics.
03:07Instead of a long, bloody siege, he used his brain. Get this. He had a small group of his best
03:13guys dress
03:14up as Byzantine soldiers. They slipped into the fortress at night, took out the guards, and just
03:20opened the main gates from the inside. His main army poured in, and the whole thing was over before the
03:25garrison even knew what was happening. It was pure psychological warfare. So you see, every one of these
03:31victories sent a powerful signal. This wasn't just about grabbing loot and running. Osman was telling
03:37everyone, his followers, his enemies, and the Byzantines, that he was building something to last. He was laying
03:44the foundation for an actual state. But look, these early wins, they were just the warm-up. They were setting
03:51the
03:51stage for the most important moment in Osman's life. His big leap from being a tribal chief, or a bay,
03:57to becoming
03:58the founder of his very own independent state. All right, the year is 1299. This is a huge moment.
04:05The Seljuk Sultanate, which had been under the Mongols' thumb for ages, finally collapses for good. And Osman,
04:11he seizes the opportunity. He declares his territory, his bailik, totally independent. This is it. This is
04:18the official birth of what would become the Ottoman state. Now, declaring independence is one thing.
04:24That's a bold move. But defending it? That's the real test. This was a direct challenge to the
04:30Byzantine emperor himself, and he could not let it slide. The empire decided it was time to crush this
04:36upstart leader once and for all. And it all leads to the Battle of Baphias in 1302. Just look at
04:43these
04:43numbers. It's a classic David versus Goliath story. You've got Osman with 5,000 warriors, mostly speedy
04:49light cavalry, and he's up against a professional Byzantine army of 12,000 soldiers led by a top
04:54general. On paper, this should have been a walk in the park for the Byzantines. But Osman was not
04:59about to fight on their terms. He started things off with a surprise attack on their camp in the
05:04middle of the night. Then, during the main battle, he pulled out his signature move, the feigned retreat.
05:10He had his cavalry act like they were running away, which tricked the overconfident Byzantine cavalry
05:15into a reckless chase. It was a perfect trap. Osman's forces swarmed the disorganized pursuers,
05:22surrounded them, and wiped them out. That single blow just shattered the morale of the whole Byzantine
05:27army, and they were completely routed. So yeah, the Battle of Baphias was a massive military win,
05:33but it was so, so much more than that. This was the moment the Ottomans put the world on notice.
05:38It was the first time an Ottoman leader had ever defeated a professional imperial Byzantine army.
05:44A lot of historians argue that this battle, maybe even more than the declaration in 1299,
05:49was the true founding moment of the Ottomans. So after that incredible victory at Baphias,
05:54Osman's power just explodes. He starts consolidating his grip on the whole region. But there was still
06:01one great prize left to take. A city that would become the obsession of his final years.
06:06And that prize? It was the city of Bursa. I mean, this was the crown jewel of Byzantine Anatolia,
06:14a huge, wealthy, and heavily fortified city. For Osman, taking Bursa wasn't just about winning
06:19another battle. It was the key to guaranteeing his state had a future.
06:24Now, he knew he couldn't just storm the walls, so he played the long game. The siege began way back
06:29in 1317. For years, his men took over the smaller forts around the city, slowly cutting off its supplies.
06:36But by 1320, Osman himself was getting old and was in agony from severe gout. He couldn't lead the
06:43fight himself anymore, so he passed command to his son and heir, Orhan, trusting him to finish the job.
06:48And finally, after almost 10 years, Bursa surrendered in 1326. And here's the part that
06:54sounds like it's straight out of a movie. The news that Bursa had finally fallen reached Osman
06:58just as he was lying on his deathbed. He lived just long enough to hear that his life's greatest
07:04ambition, the dream he had chased for decades, had finally come true. And the results of his life's
07:10work? They really speak for themselves. He started out with this small piece of border territory,
07:15about 4,000 square kilometers. By the time he died, he had quadrupled it, turning it into a powerful,
07:21growing state of 16,000 square kilometers. But you know, Osman's legacy was never just about land.
07:28It was about purpose. In his final words to his son Orhan, he laid out the core belief system that
07:34would fuel the Ottoman Empire for centuries. It wasn't about personal greed or just conquering for the
07:39sake of it. It was about a higher spiritual mission. This was the powerful vision he passed on.
07:45And that kind of leaves us with this final big question. Osman never even called himself a
07:50sultan. He lived a pretty simple life. And yet, the state he built, founded on this incredible mix
07:56of strategic genius, political smarts, and deep faith, would grow into one of the most powerful
08:01empires the world has ever seen. It really makes you think, how can the vision of one person end up
08:06shaping the destiny of millions for hundreds of years to come?
