07:27the remembrance park was built as a tribute to those who were forcibly disappeared during the civil
07:32military dictatorship in argentina three years after the terror period former exiles returned to visit the
07:38graves of their loved ones and honor their memory a correspondent fabian restivo with the story
07:45on the banks of the rio de la plata along one of argentina's border the park of memory was inaugurated
07:52in 2007 it is a monument to the victims of state terror rooms built with 30 000 bricks representing the
07:5930 000 people who disappeared during the dictatorship we went with claudio and anna former exiles who have
08:06many lifelong friends and comrades buried there every year there are people i've been having coffee with
08:14hanging out with praying rabbi tom julio pronsano but sometimes words just aren't enough
08:29in this place with all this history but this part of the history has to start at the beginning
08:39i had just turned 20 and i left with a minor's permit
08:46but things just like the killings took 17 years to settle down
08:51i had to finish my early childhood education degree which is what i was studying and still
09:03had left to complete anyway in a few months when things settle down i'll go back to finish my degree
09:09and fate brought them together more than 40 years ago i met claudio we started a family i studied
09:20in barcelona i worked in barcelona and we came back in 1994.
09:26la tragedia y el horror led to some unexpected coincidences 17 compañeros de promoción tengo
09:33tres amigos de barrio 17 classmates three friends from my neighborhood friends i've known since i was
09:42a teenager there and those are fellow activists tengo amigos hijos de amigos hermanos de amigos
09:50i have friends friends children and friends siblings yes i do and that's what happened with claudio
09:58as we read the walls we kept discovering that we knew people in common the consigna desde el
10:04the guiding principle since the return has been to preserve the memories and at times to overcome our
10:10fear i brought my granddaughters along and the youngest one who was nine at the time and was reading
10:23the signs noticed the word pregnant the dictatorship certainly showed no mercy or humanity
10:36so little
10:41nothing disrupts the tradition of coming even outside of march 24.
10:46every march 24 we come here we come here on days other than march 24 as well we've also brought
10:54our
10:54children here this place really moves me
11:05because beyond everything it tells you let's say the way the tour is put together
11:15it all gives me a real sense of what actually happened and sometimes as eduardo galliano said we have to
11:23help people see it is a place we've explored both on our own and with others
11:39we've even accompanied people who had a missing immediate family member and who had never been
11:47there before and who encountered for the first time a name and a place that was very moving
11:53from buenos aires to telesur fabián restivo and since javier milley took office his government has
12:00implemented policies to challenge historical accounts and facts about the dictatorship through
12:05cuts institutional communication strategies and public discourse silencing and disputing the 30 000
12:10victims of this terrible chapter in argentine history
12:18in his first years in office the government of javier milley dismantled the national commission for
12:23the right to identity a key agency for locating babies who had been abducted by the dictatorship
12:28and modified the script at the navy mechanical school museum to include references to alleged subversive
12:33activities throughout degrees 344 2025 and 496 2025 the executive branch ordered the restructuring of the
12:42national archive of memory and the esma site museum while the institutions were incorporated as national
12:47directorates within the international center for the promotion of human rights on april 3rd 2025
12:52justice minister mariano cuneoli barona announced the suspension of funding for 13 human rights
12:57organizations that manage resources for the maintenance of the former esma site the decision is part of the
13:03government's policy to reduce public spending the government is promoting the concept of complete memory as the
13:08cornerstone of its institutional communication every march 24th the government releases video
13:13challenging the narrative of human rights organizations in 2026 the government is considering
13:18the possibility of granting patterns to military personnel convicted for crimes against humanity however
13:23law 27 156 enacted in 1015 expressly prohibited the granting patterns amnesty or commutations of
13:31sentences to those convicted of crimes against humanity in this context of memories truth and justice let's go
13:41live with our correspondent medelio los santos in argentina buenos aires for all the information of this
13:45important week in the south american nation welcome valentu from the south
13:50and i'm really such a pleasure to meet you from here as you were saying we're just going around
13:56buenos aires and trying to capture some of the key places and key aspects to understand the importance
14:03of this week of course we were there for the great massive demonstration of tuesday march 24th
14:10but you know that this period in argentina speaks to a lot of different aspects you were just
14:16seeing and talking about the number of exiles that had to leave the country and those particular
14:22experiences also the narrative of the government the current government that is going against the
14:29narrative of the human rights organizations that are recognized worldwide and even though that is
14:36the fact well the government is trying to counter that narrative regarding what has been proven to be
14:42a systematic plan of discrimination of violence against its own population that is what we know about
14:51the period integrated with the coup d'etat in 1976 i have now another aspect of this moment to talk
14:58about
14:58we are in buenos aires at what has what has been called for a few months now as the chenly
15:04garcía coroner
15:06here in the city that is the door that's right behind me it's the the place where chenly garcía famous
15:14songwriter and singer and singer in argentina lives and as a tribute to him he continues to live in that
15:21building right where i am right now the coroner has been named following his name and we're bringing
15:29to this place in particular to understand how culture has also played a part in memory in argentina
15:37chenly garcía who already was a famous and important songwriter during the 70s and 80s in particular has written
15:48many songs alluding to the period of the civic military dictatorship and some of those were seen in the
15:57resistance process while that coup d'etat while that military dictatorship was still going on with such a
16:04violent persecution that also targeted artists for example and other figures around the cultural world
16:12well different forms of art were key to in an indirect way maintain the denunciations maintain the
16:22criticism of what was going on the power of art of being able to say what in other words could
16:29not
16:30be spoken at that time of severe persecution that was the case of chenly garcía it's the case for example
16:36of his iconic song los dinosaurios or the dinosaurs that indirectly refers to the military coup the military
16:46leaders that were leading society at that moment with such violent persecution of the comrades that were
16:55fighting at that moment fighting for a better world in argentina and in the world in general and that was
17:04a key song at that moment and also it continued to be a symbol of resistance a symbol of how
17:12culture can
17:13maintain that memory alive as usual at march 24th that song the dinosaurs latinos audios
17:21uh we heard it uh we heard it at mayo square last tuesday it's always a very emotional moment because
17:28we grew up listening to that song and it was for many of us the first instances of understanding what
17:36happened during the 70s and 80s and why that was such an important moment to understand to continue to
17:43denounce and to keep memory alive so that is a little bit of what is happening here we will continue
17:49going
17:49around when excited telling you a little bit of these stories for now i go back to you thank you
