00:06This week, I have an SUV I have really enjoyed. It's the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 580,
00:18the flagship SUV in the Mercedes lineup, and the most powerful of the GLS models.
00:24I was pretty familiar with many of the features. You see, I have this SUV in my garage, except
00:31it's a 2022 GLS 450, the six-zoned version.
00:37This is a sharp-looking SUV with a sculpted hood, distinct lines running throughout the
00:42body, beautiful 21-inch wheels, chrome dual exhaust tips built into the rear bumper, and
00:48a nice spoiler. The emerald green metallic paint is simply stunning.
00:53Under the hood, there's a four-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with a mild hybrid assist that is
00:59mated to a nine-speed shiftable automatic transmission. Together, they produce a heart-pounding 483 horses
01:07and a strong 516 pound-feet of torque. Acceleration is not an issue with this SUV, and it sounds
01:16great. This is the 4MATIC, which signifies it's all-wheel drive.
01:21As you enter the luxurious cabin, it is all Mercedes. The GLS has one of the most spacious
01:28and comfortable cabins I've tested since I had its little sister, the GLE model.
01:34Leather seats are inviting and slightly bolstered, and they're firm, but not too firm. These power-adjusting,
01:40massaging seats are also heated and cooled. It was nice to see a light-colored interior.
01:45You get mostly black these days. There's a 12.3-inch gauge cluster that is one of the most configurable
01:53I've ever seen, and it connects to another 12.3-inch digital dash.
01:59Mercedes has their MBUX infotainment system, which still utilizes a console touchpad when
02:06navigating the system, but the touchscreen for me was easier to use, although I hate the
02:12fingerprints on it, but it's unavoidable. The learning curve was not bad, and the screen is
02:18colorful and vibrant. The infotainment system is where you operate the navigation system,
02:23Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, the amazing Burmeister sound system, voice activation,
02:30ambient lighting, Bluetooth, and it houses a terrific rear-view camera.
02:35Beautiful dark wood runs throughout the cabin from the door panels, and it continues across the dash.
02:41The center console houses the drive modes, shortcuts to the infotainment screen, and the trackpad if you
02:47prefer. You can choose from individual, sport, comfort, or eco. There are USB-C ports, a couple of big
02:56cup holders that are heated and cooled, and there are very comfortable grab handles for both front seat
03:02passengers. There's also a cell phone charger. Moving to the back seat, it's very roomy with two heated
03:08captain's chairs, and those occupants get their own air conditioning vents and controls, and more USB-C
03:15charging ports. The third row seat will hold two adults very comfortably with good leg and headroom,
03:22and you can fold it down quickly with the push of a button. The tailgate is power operated from the
03:28key
03:28fob or from a pull switch on the driver's door. Cargo area is spacious with up to 84 cubic feet
03:36behind the
03:36front seats. Also from the rear, you can lower the GLS for easier loading of cargo. Under the floor is
03:44the
03:44full-size spare and a small amount of storage. This is a bend, so it comes extremely well equipped with
03:51a
03:51start-stop disable button, brake holds, ambient lighting, the Burmeister sound system, a massive
03:57panoramic power sunroof, power tilt wheel, soft closing doors, side steps, all power assist, and a lot more.
04:07On the safety side, you get active steering assist, active lane change assist, emergency braking,
04:13blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, and traffic
04:20sign recognition. Fuel economy is okay given the size of this SUV. It's rated at 16 in town,
04:27and 21 on the highway. The GLS 580 came out late due to the chip shortage, so I've not gotten
04:35a window
04:35sticker yet, but duplicating it online, the MSRP is about $120,000, which is well in line with other
04:43large luxury SUVs. I don't find the price out of line at all looking at the competition. This SUV is
04:52truly a joy to drive. Handling is amazing, and it just feels heavy and substantial. If you need to
04:58tow something, it can handle up to 7,700 pounds. It is incredibly quiet inside, and acceleration is
05:06fantastic. It's a wonderful, roomy, daily driver. Thanks for riding along with us today for another
