00:00Trees in California's Sierra Nevada Forest are cheating death and no longer
00:04matching their climate. Researchers at Stanford University found a fifth of
00:09the conifer forest in the mountain range are now stuck in weather that is
00:13too warm for them. The trees that refuse to die in these new weather
00:17conditions are referred to as zombie forest and they are creating a vegetation
00:22climate mismatch. The lead author of the study mentioned that in the event of a
00:27major disturbance likely to be wildfire but also extreme drought or a logging
00:32event, these trees won't rise again. Insider reports about 20% of conifers in
00:38the Sierra Nevada are currently experiencing a vegetation climate
00:42mismatch and that number is likely to double in the next 77 years.
