Annah White tells the story of the death of her daughter Pippa from sepsis at age two.
Transcript
00:05Pippa died just before her third birthday.
00:09Her favourite colour was yellow.
00:11She was fun, she was happy, she was the best kid.
00:15Pippa usually goes to Ready, Set, Dance over Friday
00:18and Pip decided that she was feeling a little bit off
00:21and didn't want to go.
00:24On Saturday, she got a temperature and had a vomit.
00:28She was a little bit off her food but pretty well considering.
00:32At about 10.30, 11 o'clock, I woke up to Pip in the room.
00:37So I jumped up out of bed and told Brock
00:39that I'd take her down to the emergency department.
00:42That motherly instinct had me on red alert.
00:46When you take your sick child into hospital,
00:49you're at your most vulnerable, scared state.
00:51But I knew we could not go home.
00:55I knew something was wrong.
00:56I tried to escalate my concerns but I wasn't hurt.
01:02About 4am, they called for blood tests.
01:06It all came back that she had all the inflammatory markers up.
01:10And by about 5am, it was pretty obvious that she was in septic shock.
01:15Then they pulled us into her office and told us that she was going to die.
01:20I am an experienced mum.
01:23I knew something wasn't right.
01:25I escalated my concerns and they weren't heard.
01:29When Pip died, I felt like there was a lot of room for improvement
01:34with the current system that was in place.
01:38It's proven that before any medical diagnosis, we can pick up on things
01:43and changes and deterioration in our loved ones.
01:48Raising is a statewide clinical escalation procedure for loved ones
01:54when they feel like their loved one's not getting any better in a healthcare setting
01:58and they can raise their concerns.
02:00You know yourself or your loved one best.
02:03Trust your gut.
02:04It is okay to speak up and it's really important that you do
02:08for you or your loved one and the team caring for you in hospital.
02:12Raise It is a simple process available in all New South Wales public hospitals
02:16for carers and patients to escalate their concerns and get help fast.
02:23Pip's death has rocked me to my core.
02:26I lived in this perfect little bubble.
02:29But one thing it's given me is like drive to make sure it doesn't happen to anyone else.
02:35And that's why I'm so privileged and happy to be a part of the Raise It program.
02:40Every single person in this state should say the number in their phone
02:43so that if they are in that position they can be confident to call the number.
