Game of Wool Britains Best Knitter S01E04
Transcript
00:02Previously, during holiday week, knitters tackled their third solo challenge to create glamorous swimwear for Team GB.
00:11The pants, they're not quite going according to plan.
00:15Before using their crochet skills to make a deck chair.
00:18Can someone grab me a pina colada, please?
00:21Lydia was named Big Knitter of the Week.
00:24You should be proud because the fit is lovely.
00:26A feat of engineering.
00:28Simon lacked a plan.
00:30Just trying to make it up as I go along.
00:33Tracy missed the mark.
00:35I'm not sure the flowers have worked terribly well.
00:38But it was Stephanie who was cast off.
00:41Thank you very much indeed. Thank you.
00:46Now, it's week four and our seven remaining knitters better have brought their creativity, their A-game and of course,
00:53some adorable baby lambs.
00:55Because it's kids week on Game of War.
01:05Hello knitters and welcome back.
01:07I hope everyone's up for a bit of fun this week because it's kids week.
01:11So, for this week's solo challenge, Di and Sheila would love for you to make a costume that a toddler
01:18can wear to a kids fancy dress party.
01:23So, everyone, for this solo challenge, we would like you to make a unique outfit, a standout design and lovely
01:33stitch work so that when we look at it, we're wowed.
01:39So, crochet only.
01:42Your outfit should have three elements to it.
01:47It should be an instantly recognizable design and, as Di said, the best possible choice of crochet stitches.
01:58By now, in the competition, we really expect to see a range of stitches used.
02:05Later on, we are going to have some feral two-year-olds wearing your outfits.
02:10You've got 12 hours.
02:12So, let's get this party started and let's get hooking.
02:18This solo challenge will test the knitter's ability to use crochet stitches alone to bring a character to life.
02:27Nearing the halfway point of the competition, the judges expect originality, structural strength and maximum impact.
02:35Only the best are in with a chance of securing the coveted sheet badge.
02:40My first goal was to be here and then I was like, well, now I have a new goal. I
02:45want to get one of those sheep.
02:47First, the knitters must crochet the main body of the garment, carefully considering stitches and fastenings to ensure the best
02:55possible fit.
02:57Next, they must complete a piece of characterful headgear to really bring their outfit to life.
03:03Finally, knitters must add embellishments and accessories, which can withstand the rough and tumble of playtime.
03:10The judges will be expecting all three elements to work together to create an original and imaginative character.
03:17Designs like these might take more than 30 hours, but in the yarn barn, they have just 12.
03:26We only have seven knitters left. What are you expecting to see when you walk into the yarn barn?
03:31That it's really imaginative. Also, that their technical ability is shining through too, because it's always a balance.
03:39It's always the two, Tom. It's always creative and technical.
03:44You've got to be able to do both to win game of war.
03:49Still buzzing from her first big knitter win last week, mum of two Lydia is starting to create the body
03:55of her outfit in this, our first solo crochet challenge.
03:59I gave the choice to my girls. I said, what would you like mummy to make? And they said a
04:04lion.
04:06Lydia is making a lion romper suit using double and treble crochet worked in the round.
04:12A technique that builds up from a central point to create a seamless shape and flexible fit.
04:18She's also making a tail, wrist cuffs and a hood using the loop stitch. A technique which forms decorative loops
04:25of yarn to create her mane.
04:28Lydia, what inspired the lion?
04:31My girls.
04:32Aww.
04:33So this is my very detailed plan.
04:36Oh, okay.
04:37The girls help.
04:38Did they draw it?
04:42That is so cute.
04:44Are you planning to do it in the round?
04:45Okay, in the round.
04:46Completely in the round.
04:46So for kids, that's great.
04:48They can pull it on and there's no sewing up at the end.
04:51Exactly.
04:51Well, I wish you the best of luck with your roar and purr.
04:55Oh, my God.
04:58Also kicking off with the body of his outfit and determined to make it count is Isaac.
05:03I was talking to my mum and I was like, man, I really need an idea for a kid's costume.
05:07And she said, Explorer.
05:09And I was like, okay, we can work with that.
05:12I'm putting an intagio globe on it.
05:13I've just finished South America and getting to the top of Africa.
05:19Isaac's Explorer wears a pocketed safari jacket.
05:22He has carefully charted a globe using the intagio technique and plans to create a canvas-style fabric using a
05:29time-consuming spike stitch.
05:31To make a spike stitch, you work down into the row below, pulling the new loop up to the height
05:36of the current row to create a longer vertical stitch.
05:40He's accessorized with binoculars, a compass, and an ambitious pith helmet demanding clever engineering.
05:49For this crochet-only challenge, the judges have specifically asked for creative crochet stitches to elevate basic fancy dress into
05:58full-blown characters.
05:59Isaac's hoping his choice will help navigate him into the next round.
06:04My eye has been caught.
06:05Yes.
06:06I've chosen to do a spike stitch in the main fabric of the vest.
06:10It's going to take a lot longer for it to work up, but I do think it provides, like, a
06:14slightly more elegant look.
06:15It does look much more like a woven fabric.
06:18Yes, because they're typically made of, like, canvas.
06:20Yes, exactly.
06:21It seems a really considered stitch to use.
06:28It's so much harder when you don't have a huge arsenal of crochet stitches.
06:33Oh, I've never crocheted before in my life.
06:35Did I say that?
06:36I said I was a novice.
06:38I didn't say I haven't crocheted.
06:40Yeah.
06:40Because I obviously have.
06:41Crocheted a debt chair, okay?
06:43Yeah.
06:43Not many of us can say that.
06:46No stranger to making outfits, fashion designer Holger is reimagining a childhood friend.
06:52As a three-year-old, I had a little fox.
06:56Fox in German is fuchs.
06:58As a three-year-old, I wasn't able to pronounce the K sound.
07:01So whenever I wanted to say fuchs, I said foots.
07:04Of course.
07:06Holger's Foots the Fox costume is made up of striped dungarees secured with a shoulder strap and hand-crocheted buttons.
07:14His foxy elements include cuffs, a bushy tail, and a headpiece using a brushed yarn technique to create whiskery sideburns.
07:23Just started a second panel of my trousers.
07:27For her solo knit, librarian worker Dipti has been inspired by children's novel The Day the Crayons Quit.
07:35Once the child puts it on, hopefully they will look like a crayon.
07:39The hat is a tip, and I'm going to make a little bag that looks like a crayon in which
07:43to put all your crayons in.
07:45So it's crayon, crayon, crayon, crayon.
07:49Dipti is creating a crayon-shaped outfit in a basic double crochet stitch.
07:54She's looking to impress with intricate lettering using intarsia crochet on the front, a technique she's not tried before.
08:02The hat will be a crayon tip, and her third component is a matching bag for actual crayons.
08:08Instead of shaping around the body, Dipti has got started with just a simple tube.
08:15Shaping-wise, it is really simple. You know, I'm changing the shape of the child. The child is going to
08:20look like a crayon.
08:24Two hours into the challenge, knitters should be well into the body of their costumes, and starting to consider how
08:30to add characterisation to their outfits.
08:34Last week, it was Tracey's lack of embellishments with her bikini that put her in the danger zone.
08:39What are we here? This is a bee. I'm working on the body at the moment.
08:44Can I just see which different stitches you've been using?
08:47So I've used trebles and clusters.
08:49Treble stitches are tall and loose. Cluster stitches add raised texture.
08:53I do like the cluster effect. It's giving a really nice added texture to it.
09:01Tracey's bee outfit has a stripy body in two stitch techniques, and this queen bee will also wear a crown.
09:08To construct the wings, she has decided to use two hair curling bands, which she will wrap in yarn.
09:15What's the structure of the wings?
09:17Well, I'm bending these. I'm going to wrap round and tie them.
09:20Hair curling bands will add weight to the wings, making them trickier to attach.
09:26How will that attach?
09:28I'm going to attach like that, so then I will crochet that bit on.
09:37Yeah, okay.
09:42Elsa!
09:44I've got the body piece.
09:46It's so cute.
09:47It looks random, but it's actually quite calculated.
09:54Elsa's zebra costume will feature a hat with added facial features and leg warmers.
09:59On the body, she will use multiple stitches of different sizes, creating a natural-looking stripe, inspired by a knitting
10:07pattern she unearthed from the 1950s.
10:11I like the way the stitches were done, and I managed to do this in such a way that I'd
10:17create sort of irregular stripes.
10:19Creating that weird flow to make them irregular makes it like an actual zebra, right?
10:24Yeah.
10:26By the four-hour mark, knitters should have moved on to their second element, crocheted headgear, to really transform the
10:34toddlers into their characters.
10:35Ta-da!
10:38He's going to have a little ears on.
10:40I'm going to add a little bit of extra material, so it gets really, really fluffy when you brush it
10:45out.
10:46This is a little pith hat.
10:48I love it.
10:49I think it suits you.
10:51It might fit.
10:55You look amazing.
10:58Well, shucks.
11:01Last week, Simon's lack of planning led to him being marked down by the judges.
11:06It's definitely a more focused week.
11:09Currently on the helmet, I'm using a double crochet.
11:14Simon's night costume will feature body armour, crocheted in a beginner-friendly granny square stitch, to mimic chainmail.
11:21There is more complexity in the helmet, but unlike last week, Simon's written a pattern.
11:26His accessory is an ambitious mace, with interlinking chains, all made from tight double crochet stitches, perfect for intricate shaping.
11:37My biggest concern is my knowledge of crochet and the simplicity of the stitches.
11:43The judges said about using different stitches, but I've only got a few in my arsenal.
11:50I think everyone is taking this challenge a little bit too seriously.
11:55Luckily, I'm on hand with the party games.
11:58Game of woolly pinata, anyone?
12:03Oh!
12:04Oh!
12:06Oh!
12:08Oh!
12:11You have six hours to go.
12:13By now, knitters should be finishing their bodies and headgear, and moving on to the accessories.
12:19At this stage of the competition, every element must embody technical prowess for knitters to stand out.
12:26Stiff competition this week, what do you reckon?
12:28Something arguably good will have to go.
12:33Dipti is struggling with the lettering on the body of her crayon.
12:36I think I've gone wrong some more.
12:43This is Intagia Crochet.
12:45Yes.
12:45I had to learn just for this, and it's been quite a learning process.
12:49Yep.
12:49I hope the lettering will be clear.
12:54And you weren't tempted to surface crochet, or afterwards, the lettering?
13:01No, because I wanted to be able to show you that I could use this technique.
13:05Yes.
13:05Do you mind if I have a little look?
13:07Of course you can, yeah.
13:08Very much so.
13:18Just tidy it up a little bit.
13:20Smarten them up.
13:21Smarten them up.
13:21Yeah.
13:22Good luck, Dipti.
13:23Good luck.
13:36It's kids week in the yarn barn, and while I get the party started outside, so we go in
13:41the stitch, round the needle, pull it through, and off.
13:46Got it?
13:49Inside, knitters are more than halfway through their solo challenge.
13:53Original, crochet only, fancy dress outfits for kids.
13:57Some are well into the third and final stage of the challenge, the accessories.
14:01I'm making the second monocular to form my binoculars.
14:05The tail will be crocheted.
14:07These are little egg warmers.
14:10I'm making a mace.
14:11Mace handle.
14:13This is the bit Tracy's worried about.
14:15Very worried about.
14:20But others are still working on the main body of their garment.
14:24My priority is to try and take Di and Sheila's advice and work on the front of the outfit
14:29to make it look tidier and a bit more defined.
14:35I can't decide whether that's better or worse.
14:39Lydia's face said it all.
14:45That actually doesn't look too bad from far away.
14:48Yeah.
14:48She's told that consistently.
14:50Hilarious!
14:57Simon!
14:58Oh, this looks fun.
15:00Oh, wow, look at that.
15:01So these are lots of loops that you made in double crochet?
15:04Yeah, double crochet, foundation chains.
15:06Fantastic.
15:07This is great.
15:11Instead of using crochet alone, Tracy chose hair curling bands to create shape.
15:17But they've made the wings much heavier and harder to attach.
15:20I'm going to put a crochet plate across the back and put it in place.
15:24So put it right the way round both sides to hold it.
15:27Flutter, flutter.
15:32Mostly finish the romper.
15:35I'll start my tail here.
15:37Just a tube.
15:37Like, you're literally looking around and there's all these incredible costumes coming to life.
15:46Knitters!
15:47You have one hour until this paddling wool is going to be full of toddlers trying out your outfit.
15:56That kind of ramps up the pressure nicely.
15:58That's what we want.
16:00You know, more pressure.
16:01In this final hour, the knitters must complete their three elements ready for judgement.
16:07Dipti is working on her hat.
16:10So the hat is going to tie under the child's head.
16:15Not long to go now.
16:17What's going on?
16:18Getting there.
16:19Putting some facial features on.
16:21There's a wee bit of eye shadow.
16:22Isaac, where are you at?
16:23I'm just making my compass.
16:25That is adorable.
16:26Oh, my gosh.
16:26Okay, Lydia.
16:28Yeah?
16:28Where are you at?
16:29I will attach a tail here.
16:31Let's have a look at the tail attachment.
16:33Lovely.
16:34Okay, and Holger?
16:35I am attaching the tail to the trousers.
16:38You look at that tail!
16:45I don't know whether it will be enough for the judges.
16:48I've given it my best shot.
16:50All finished.
16:55Time is up.
16:56Playtime is over.
16:58I'm down, baby!
16:59Yay!
17:03I had the opportunity to see everyone else's and they are really fantastic.
17:07The stakes are high this week.
17:10The stakes will be even higher when our seven costumes face their true test.
17:17Toddlers.
17:42Toddler test passed.
17:44It's judgement time.
17:45It's now time for Di and Sheila to get critical with the crochet.
17:50So, first up, we have Holger.
17:59So, Holger, lots of nice stitch details, design details.
18:03You're teaseled.
18:04It is a bit of fluff.
18:05Works incredibly well.
18:07So, three elements.
18:09The head.
18:10The little dungarees.
18:11I love the tail.
18:12You thought about the construction, the weight of this fabric.
18:16Yeah.
18:16And the crocheted button is great.
18:19I think it is a success.
18:21Yes.
18:23This challenge wasn't just about creating a toddler's outfit.
18:28We were looking for something that was original and special and that's what you've done.
18:35So, thank you.
18:37Thank you very much, Holger.
18:38Next up, we have Tracy.
18:43Queen Bee.
18:46You have cleverly used clusters here to give it really nice texture.
18:52And also breaking up the fact that they are essentially yellow and black stripes.
18:56Buttons.
18:57Slightly sad these aren't crocheted.
19:03I'm not sure that the wings work.
19:06I think they're a bit too heavy.
19:08Because of the weight of these, you needed to compensate.
19:11It's pulled it right away from the back.
19:14They don't quite look like wings.
19:19Next up, we have Lydia.
19:24Wow.
19:25That is a real romper suit.
19:27Good.
19:28There's some great embellishments to this.
19:31These lovely cufflets.
19:33The echo on the bottom.
19:35The mane.
19:35The tail.
19:36It does all tie together.
19:38It ties together really well.
19:40Very nicely.
19:40The tail has actually got quite a nice shape, hasn't it?
19:44I know it's a small detail.
19:46Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
19:47But again, crocheted please.
19:50Those are quite important details.
19:52Okay.
19:52That you've made everything yourself.
19:54Yeah.
19:55Obviously a lion suit is not super original.
19:57Yeah.
19:58But I think it's got your mark on it, which I like.
20:01Thank you, Lydia.
20:02Thank you, Lydia.
20:03Next up we have Simon.
20:08The helmet is a good, solid piece of construction.
20:12You thought this through, didn't you?
20:14I tried.
20:15You planned?
20:16Yeah.
20:16Which is unusual for me.
20:18When it comes to crochet, literally everything I've got is in that.
20:23So I can see you've really tried hard here and different crochet stitches.
20:28You're adapting what you know you can do to fit all the different requirements.
20:33There is more that you could have done, I'm sure.
20:38I actually really love this.
20:40Very pleasing historical object.
20:42And a great success earlier in the toddler arena.
20:48Go on, Di.
20:49Give it a swing.
20:50You know you want to.
20:51There you go.
20:53The detail you put into this defines this costume.
20:57Engineering like that really makes me happy.
20:59I think you really stepped up making this.
21:03Next up we have Ailsa.
21:09She's quite something, isn't she?
21:13Lot of fun.
21:15I mean a child's imagination can run wild wearing something like this.
21:21One of the striking things is how you manipulated your crochet stitches to uneven lines.
21:28You have, I would guess, very carefully worked out the height of each crochet stitch.
21:36Yeah, that's right.
21:37It's a cracking pattern.
21:41The detail in the eyes is exceptional.
21:44The eye shadow with this offset top section.
21:48So you could then put the eye on top to raise it out.
21:52The intention of fine detail in there is really, really amazing.
21:59Love it.
22:00And next up is Isaac.
22:07I love this Isaac.
22:10This lovely textured crochet stitching which looks like a woven fabric from an explorer's jacket.
22:17This is really complicated crochet in tarsia.
22:22And the countries are beautifully shaped.
22:25It's very clear and it's very good.
22:27In your fifth helmet.
22:30You have worked a set of spirals to your centre.
22:35Very nicely engineered.
22:38Got some really amazing little elements.
22:41Compass, which is a lovely surprise for a child.
22:44But more exciting for a child to have is a pair of binoculars.
22:49I could see a child loving getting into character.
22:52A small explorer.
22:54Yeah.
22:55Next up, it's Dipsy.
23:01So we've got a crayon.
23:06Great wee hat.
23:09This is your little third element.
23:11Yes.
23:11The crayon bag.
23:13Yes.
23:13Which is very sweet.
23:15Nicely engineered.
23:17So you have been exploring intarsia.
23:22Crochet, yes.
23:24You've chosen to outline the letters.
23:33It's difficult to see.
23:38I think when we were thinking about making these letters clearer, I wouldn't have expected such long lengths of yarn.
23:50So I think it's oversized.
23:55It does gape at the back.
23:57It gapes at the back.
23:58I find the concept just slightly too simple.
24:01Yeah.
24:02It's not allowed you to create shape and form.
24:07Mm-hmm.
24:08Which I would have liked to have seen more of.
24:11Mm-hmm.
24:12Thank you very much, Dipty.
24:13Thanks, Tal.
24:15I just threw whatever I knew at it, which isn't a lot when it comes to crochet.
24:20So, yeah, just gave it what I had.
24:24After looking at everybody else's makes, mine is really, really quite simple.
24:30Maybe I've reached my peak.
24:31I don't know.
24:32Maybe I'm out of my depth.
24:33I don't know.
24:40It's time for the Team Knit and one final chance to claim the prized Big Knitter badge and avoid being
24:48cast off.
24:52So, for this week's group challenge, Di and Sheila would love for you to make a wall hanging for a
25:02children's bedroom.
25:04We're looking for something really imaginative.
25:08Think fantastical beasts, think cosmic characters, superheroes, whatever you can dream up.
25:13Now, it wouldn't be Game of War without something extra interesting thrown into the mix,
25:17because Di and Sheila have devised a little game.
25:19It's a game we've all played when we were younger.
25:21So, here's one I made earlier.
25:25First person will design the first part.
25:29The next person will then design the second part until the final design is revealed.
25:35We'd like you to make it as imaginative as you can.
25:42We'll also be looking for interactive and sensory elements.
25:48And as always, the challenge is judged blind.
25:50So, Di and Sheila, I'm going to have to ask you to leave the armbar.
25:54OK. Good luck.
25:55Now, for the teams. In team one, Dipti, Holger, Lydia and Simon.
26:01In team two, Tracy, Isaac and Elsa.
26:05You have eight hours to complete this challenge. Let's get knitting.
26:13For this team challenge, they'll need their imaginations and stitches to run wild.
26:19Each knitter is creating their own interactive decorative panel,
26:23which will then all be joined together to form one wall hanging.
26:27Team one's piece will be made up of four panels, while team two's will have three.
26:33But their first task is playing the game.
26:37I really want to look.
26:38I want to look.
26:43Oh!
26:46This is, like, really out there, isn't it?
26:48We're really going for shapes.
26:50Yeah.
26:50That's really important, for children to recognise shapes.
26:53Actually, I had a thought.
26:55Cos it's so varied, it might be worth having the same background colour,
26:59so that it is cohesive across the whole design.
27:02Is everyone cool with that?
27:03Yeah.
27:05The shapes team have created a geometric creature on a cream stocking stitch background.
27:12Tracy's striking triangular face features intarsia, applique eyes, sparkly yarn hair, beads and buttons for sensory impact.
27:23Isaac's circular caterpillar body mixes waffle and cable knit with textured yarns.
27:28Plus, I-cord legs that push and pull.
27:32Ailsa finishes the design with a colour-block intarsia skirt, tie-able lace-up shoes and a furry friend with
27:39a jingly bell.
27:40The whole wall hanging is framed in neat garter stitch.
27:43Instead of just jumping straight in, the other team are coming up with a character before taking pen to paper.
27:50What immediately comes to your mind for a character?
27:53Could be under the sea, like a sea creature.
27:56A sea creature will give us more opportunity to make it, like, interactive and fun.
28:00OK.
28:01Right.
28:02Should we just draw?
28:06Go for it.
28:08Start again.
28:10I mean, I like it.
28:15The sea creature team are building an ambitious underwater world, complete with a monster rising from the depths, panel by
28:22panel, packed with interactive features.
28:24Above the surface, Simon's human head sits on a blue stocking-stitched sky, with a zipped mouth, pom-pom nose
28:31and applique sunglasses.
28:33Below, Lydia's torso has bobbly yarn tentacle arms and a working crochet zip-up vest on sparkly seaweed yarn.
28:41Dipti's fully crocheted panel adds textured legs and removable swimming trunks.
28:46At the seabed, Holger's intarsier feet rest on richly stitched textures with tactile pom-pom toenails.
28:55With the two creatures dreamt up, the team's cast on, but with two very different approaches.
29:02I like the idea of doing four distinct backgrounds.
29:06I think as long as, like, the background colours are the same throughout, it can sort of look like it's
29:10one thing.
29:11Yeah.
29:14When you were growing up, what was your favourite game?
29:16This was one of mine.
29:17Really?
29:18Yes.
29:19Create something as outrageous as we could get away with, basically.
29:22Oh, I can only imagine what went through your mind, Sheila.
29:25Oh, well.
29:26What kind of designs are you hoping for in this challenge?
29:30I'm looking for something really creative.
29:32Is there a chance to communicate fun?
29:36What do you think could go wrong?
29:37The working out of how it's all going to hang together, how they actually decide to make all the panels
29:45join.
29:46We have asked for playful and wildly imaginative, but, of course, people could tip over the edge.
29:54The knitters had started by creating their individual panels.
29:58What colour shall I do the face?
30:00Yellow might be nice.
30:02I'm thinking yellow would be nice.
30:04Necklace, bubbles for the hat.
30:06I'm never more happy than when I'm surrounded by glitter and things and stuff.
30:10I'm doing the crazy belly of our creature.
30:13I'm using a lot of different textures of yarn.
30:15I've got sparkle, I've got fluffy, and then I'm also doing waffle stitch.
30:19Knitting doesn't like to hang vertically, so the shapes team are knitting a border to avoid the entire wall hanging
30:26curling in on itself.
30:27We're doing garter stitch at the side so that we have a cohesive pattern going up the side of the
30:32panel.
30:32This frame not only gives it a uniform frame that we don't need to worry about when we've completed it,
30:38but it also helps to prevent the stockinette from curling as much.
30:42Has anyone ever made a panel for a wall before?
30:45I have not.
30:47I've got a big tapestry crochet in my kitchen.
30:50And how long did it take you?
30:52Er...
30:52Please tell me under eight hours.
30:58Because I'm quite a slow knitter, I have opted to crochet.
31:02It will look different, but it's supposed to look different,
31:04because everybody's panels are going to look different when they get put together anyway.
31:09Knits and crochet stitches differ in size and tension.
31:12Making the panels match requires careful swatching, measuring and adjusting stitch counts.
31:18I thought I'd measured it, but it's come out too big.
31:20Can we lay it together, so...
31:24Quite considerably smaller.
31:26I'll start again and I'll reduce it to see if I can get it to fit Lydia's better.
31:32I hope this doesn't mean that I don't finish it, I really do hope, but yeah.
31:37Okay team, where... where are we at?
31:39God knows.
31:40I'm lagging vastly behind.
31:42The more varied the stitches, textures and yarn weights,
31:46the harder it will be to join the individual panels and for it to hang smoothly.
31:52Okay, so what is this? We have a human head. What is that?
31:56It's like tentacle arms, okay?
31:58Tentacle arms.
32:01Which part are you doing... so which part is the... red?
32:05Arms. The arms.
32:06The arms are red, but the body's purple.
32:09Yeah. Okay.
32:10Why not?
32:12It's playfully imaginative.
32:14And the interactive bits were gonna be stuck on top.
32:17Okay.
32:18Lydia's going to do a jacket for her body.
32:21I'm gonna try and do some trunks.
32:22It's always good to include as many different things as possible.
32:26Okay.
32:26Is there any part of anyone that's a little bit worried and concerned about time?
32:30I mean, absolutely. It's delirium.
32:33Well, I will leave you to all of your beastly activities and I will see you soon.
32:41How's it going team?
32:44So, how did you come up with that?
32:46As soon as we opened it up, we saw there were circles there and then we thought shapes. Shapes just
32:51come to mind.
32:52Educational.
32:53Absolutely.
32:53It all kind of matches and like you say, you found a common ground.
32:56Like, yeah, it's supposed to look like it was done by three different people.
32:59Yeah.
32:59But by having the same background across all three parts, when we joined them together, it's a bit more cohesive.
33:05What are some of the interactive ideas that you've got as part of your wall hanging?
33:12Has anybody got any interactive...?
33:14Yeah.
33:14It's got a bit of glitter and a bit of fluff here.
33:17Also be adding shoelaces so that the kids can learn how to tie shoes.
33:21Yeah.
33:21We decided to keep it simple just because our design has a lot of colour and a lot going on.
33:37She's got a little bit of a face like a lemon now. Sour-mouthed.
33:41How are you, Isaac? How's it going?
33:44Um, it's going.
33:45So on this pink one that I've done down here, I've done a waffle stitch and then I've got this
33:49like really sparkly stuff over here.
33:50Oh, Isaac, that is fantastic. That is so lovely, Isaac.
33:55This is so fun.
33:56But while the shapes team are focused on the sensory, the sea creature team are leaning into interactivity.
34:02Now it's just adding as much interactive nature as we can.
34:05He'll have a jacket with a zip.
34:06I am embarking on hair.
34:08We'll have applications of toes and seaweed and anything that's on the seabed.
34:14I'm going to put some velcro on the swimming briefs so they're going to be removable and put on a
34:18ball.
34:22Knitters, you're halfway through this challenge. You have four hours remaining.
34:27Well, clearly nobody wants to play with me.
34:34In the final four hours, knitters should be finishing their interactive elements and joining their panels to make a creature
34:41that hangs as one.
34:42I'm very glad we went with the same background colours with each other.
34:47Yeah. Although I do look at this now and think, oh God, it's so plain, I don't know if I
34:50like it.
34:52The whole team has been very cohesive in terms of the background colour and also created a border factored into
34:58each panel, so it will sit flat.
35:00My slight concern is that having like a plain cream background doesn't scream imagination and fun and excitement to me.
35:09This team has spent more time on the interactiveness of it.
35:12There's the embellishments and all the little bits.
35:14They haven't necessarily thought about how everything links together.
35:19It's looking a bit of chaos over here.
35:21I've got 25 rows left. We just haven't got that time.
35:26Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay.
35:28The end result is what counts. We need to get it finished.
35:38It's kids week and the knitters are working in teams to create interactive children's wall hangings.
35:44By now, each team should have completed their individual panels and be attaching them together.
35:49I am now casting off my panel and I'm going to get ready to put these all together.
35:54Can you hang it under mine, Isaac? Is it good?
35:57It's matching up, yeah.
35:59But the sea creature team are drowning.
36:02We're all individually trying to finish our panels at the moment.
36:06Knitters, one hour to go.
36:09Oh, no.
36:10In the final hour, knitters must complete their wall hanging and attach them to dowels to be hung from the
36:15yarn barn roof.
36:16But the sea creature team haven't even finished their panels, let alone worked out how to join them.
36:22It might just be a case of a quick invisible seam to join them all together.
36:26We don't know.
36:27How this thing is going to end up on the frame, I don't give a flying whatever about.
36:33Monkeys.
36:34Monkey. Good idea.
36:36How's it going over here? You're sewing together.
36:39Embellishments are done. We're sewing together.
36:41I'm doing mattress stitch so that the seam is invisible, just because I want the stitches to look as if
36:45they're knitted into each other.
36:46We are calm.
36:47You are very calm.
36:48We are the zen group.
36:48That's true.
36:49I feel like the frantic is coming from over there.
36:52Good.
36:55I'm going to go check in on the other team, so I'll see you in a bit.
36:58Bye Tom.
36:59Bye Tom.
36:59Oh, okay.
37:00We're doing that now.
37:01Let's start thinking about getting the pieces together.
37:03Yeah, this is not coming along, is it?
37:06Yep.
37:07When is the plan to start joining?
37:08I see one panel is being joined right now.
37:10About 25 minutes ago.
37:11You do know that you have to have this on the pole, right?
37:13Yep.
37:14And there's not much time left, right?
37:16Yep.
37:16Yep.
37:19How do we think we want to attach this to the rod?
37:22When I made my wall hanging, I just took one long thread and went round and round the dowel.
37:28With whip it.
37:29Whip it.
37:31The whip stitch wraps around the dowel and the edge of the fabric, holding both securely in place.
37:36But it takes time to do well.
37:40The sea creature team are now attempting to sew their panels together, whilst finishing their interactive elements at the same
37:47time.
37:47I really need my panel to put my embellishments on.
37:51I've got to put...
37:53I need, like, some small sharp scissors.
37:56I need small sharp scissors.
37:57Yes, possibly.
37:57Here, small scissors.
37:59Here, here.
37:59Oh, here.
37:59Got them, got them, got them, got them.
38:01If you can sew one end while I sew it onto the pole.
38:04Um, sew what when...
38:08The sea creature team have no option but to roughly sew their top panel to the dowel.
38:13Yeah, roll like this.
38:14Yeah, that's their job, really quickly.
38:19We've finished it.
38:20Well done, guys.
38:22Well done, Will.
38:23Done it.
38:26How long have we got?
38:27It doesn't match, slow as fast as you can.
38:29OK, OK.
38:29At this point.
38:30Yep.
38:31My pants are on.
38:32Well, it's better than your pants are off, so...
38:36Knitters, finish your rows, needles down, time is up.
38:40Who's earned their pudding and who is having an extra serving of sprouts?
38:45I love sprouts.
38:48No matter whether we win or lose, I'm really proud of this.
38:52Ta-da!
38:54Oh, dear.
38:56Eight hours and approximately 36,000 stitches later, the teams have pulled off two intricate interactive wall hangings worthy of
39:06a child's bedroom.
39:08Well done, knitters.
39:10That is two interactive wall hangings complete.
39:13Come on in, judges.
39:18Oh, my goodness.
39:19Look at this.
39:27Shall we look at this one first?
39:28Yes.
39:29Yeah.
39:31On the top panel, Simon's created a head with a zip-up mouth and applique sunglasses.
39:36Lydia created tentacle arms and a zip vest.
39:41Dipti, a crochet panel with Velcro trunks.
39:44Holger's contribution, intarsier feet with pom-pom toenails.
39:49Well, it's a lot to unpick here.
39:52There is a lot.
39:53Lots of different texture, stitches, lots of different colour, obviously.
39:58Super bit of textured knitting at the bottom there.
40:01Yeah, very nice.
40:03Pants.
40:04Oh.
40:07Obviously, we have a different edge here because it's a crochet panel.
40:13It has come in narrower.
40:15We have this bulge, slight bulge.
40:18Yeah.
40:19Yeah.
40:19Don't we?
40:21A zip!
40:22Putting zips into knitwear can be really challenging.
40:25What you always want is for it to sit flat and that's what this is doing.
40:29It's sitting beautifully.
40:30And then we get to another zip.
40:36But...
40:39Looks like he's talking.
40:44I do like the idea of the garter stitch edge.
40:48I like that very much, yes.
40:50Yeah.
40:52Although, it sort of stops here.
40:56So, they don't match.
40:59It looks like it's been sewn on.
41:02It's very visible.
41:04You've got this slightly uneven effect.
41:08Here, we've got the join between the panels.
41:12I mean...
41:13It's not brilliant.
41:15Do you know that's one of the things about...
41:18Planning ahead.
41:19Thinking about how you're finishing...
41:20Consideration.
41:21...when you start.
41:22Yeah.
41:23And then what do you think of the second one?
41:28Tracey has made an intarsier face with sparkly details.
41:32Isaac, a textured caterpillar with moveable legs.
41:36And Ailsa's contribution, a skirt with tie-up shoes and a furry friend.
41:43It does actually make me smile the way it follows through with all the different colours.
41:48Yeah.
41:48This is a much neater overall concept.
41:52They've all gone for the same background colour.
41:55Yes.
41:55And created a very uniform wall hanging.
41:59Their garter stitch at the edges.
42:02There's no tension problems.
42:04I mean, I think that's really beautifully executed.
42:09I'm really enchanted by the face.
42:11It's just a fantastic character.
42:14I just love this.
42:16These panels are lovely.
42:19Feels.
42:20All the different textures.
42:21The legs move.
42:22OK.
42:23Look, this is cool.
42:25Yeah, I like that.
42:26And finally we get to this section.
42:28I'm practising my shoelace tying.
42:31And it worked.
42:35There's not as much interactive things happening.
42:40There aren't really any little pouches or...
42:45Surprises.
42:47Mm.
42:49So, Di and Sheila, have you come to a decision?
42:52This week's winning wall hanging is...
43:00..this one.
43:05Which team worked on this one?
43:08I loved it.
43:09I could see a children's book opening with this character...
43:13..running all the way through it.
43:15Well, a huge constitulations to Isaac, Ailsa and Tracy.
43:24It's now up to Di and Sheila to decide who will be cast off...
43:28..based on their performances across both challenges.
43:32What a week.
43:34It's kids week, huh?
43:35Who in particular has impressed you this week?
43:38Isaac has impressed me.
43:41Talking about progression.
43:43From week one, when he made the rather...
43:46..not great in Tarsier, to this week, when we saw...
43:51..planet Earth beautifully defined.
43:53I loved the texture of his Explorer jacket.
43:57I just thought that was one of the best things I've seen.
44:01Very special.
44:02And he also came up with the cohesive element
44:05from the group challenge.
44:07Absolutely.
44:07Yes, he's got a really clear vision.
44:09I feel he's really stepped up this week.
44:12Ailsa.
44:15She has really interesting, quirky ideas.
44:19She's bubbling with imagination.
44:23Who's at risk at being cast off this week?
44:25Dipped is in danger.
44:29She tried new techniques, but it didn't quite work.
44:33She was in the losing panel.
44:35It was too confusing, too many disparate elements.
44:41Simon, we're coming to a crunch point
44:44and speaking about the variety of stitches,
44:47I think he has used every crochet stitch that he knows.
44:50We're at that point in the competition now.
44:52Simon is not the strongest at this level.
44:56Is a mace enough to take him through?
44:59I just don't know.
45:03What a week it's been.
45:04It's time to find out who's knit big
45:06and whose time it is to sit on the naughty step.
45:08So, the big knitter this week...
45:16...is Isaac.
45:18Well done. Well done. Well done.
45:21If you can all join me in giving a big...
45:26...to Isaac. Congratulations.
45:31And as always, this part gets tougher and tougher as the weeks go by.
45:36The person being cast off...
45:41...is...
45:44...Dipty.
45:45I knew.
45:48You've been so fantastic.
45:52I'm going to get a bit tearful because I'm sad to be leaving.
45:55I've made such a good group of friends.
45:58But I was starting to feel out of my depth, to be absolutely honest with you.
46:02I'm absolutely gassed to have this sheet badge.
46:06Group hug. We're in the middle.
46:07Group hug.
46:09Group hug.
46:10Group hug.
46:11Group hug.
46:13Group hug.
46:13Group hug.
46:15Group hug.
46:16Group hug.
46:17Group hug.
46:18Group hug.
46:19Next time, knitted food good enough to eat.
46:22I'm making Sunday roast.
46:24It's my favourite dinner.
46:26And the ultimate textured cardigan.
46:28There you go, beautiful.
46:29Hold on, hold on, hold on.
46:31Something has gone wrong, I think.
46:34Next time, we're back to BATF's book.
46:35Next time, we're back to BATF's book.
46:37Next time, we're back to BATF's book.
46:44Bye-bye.
