00:27RETURNAL
00:30Hey, great to be here as well.
00:33So here we're seeing Selene crash-landing onto Atropos and starting her first loop.
00:40Specifically, we're using footage from a couple of different run-throughs, so there will be some edits through this playthrough.
00:48But how does it differ from every single run, Harry? What are we seeing here for the first time?
00:54Yeah, so every time that you exit the initial crash-landing room, you will immediately be confronted with a fairly
01:03freshly generated level, right?
01:06So, we've designed RETURNAL to be consistently fresh and surprising for players, and every run is designed to be unique
01:15and provide memorable player stories.
01:18But some of the factors, some of the modules, if you will, might get familiar in a way. So, there
01:25are some handcrafted environments that are being recycled, right?
01:29Yeah, for sure. So, each of these individual levels or areas has been handcrafted, so we can achieve the desired
01:36mood and quality of lighting and just get it balanced to perfection.
01:42However, how these rooms are interconnected is completely randomized in each run. And even after you familiarize yourself with some
01:49of these environments, they will always be populated with unfamiliar content.
01:55So, we can see some of that unfamiliar content here. The first enemies coming at you, some quick action. Greg,
02:03how do you feel about these enemies? Are they going to be tough to battle?
02:07Yeah, so here are the Kerberons. They're definitely, if you let them get close, they can take you out and
02:13they also shoot out their own projectiles to give some of that housemark bullet hell flare.
02:18But yeah, they're tough. I wouldn't stick around too long with them.
02:33And here you have some sort of a ghost of another Selene. Does that activate something, or...?
02:40So, basically, what you see here is a projection, and this is actually another player who's played Returnal. And at
02:47this point, you can either choose to scavenge to get a quick gain, or avenge. And if you avenge, get
02:52ready for what you're about to see.
02:57Is that an elite, or is it a boss fight, or...?
03:01Correct. It's like a stronger hostile that you need to take down. In this case, it's the Kerberon we saw
03:06before, but this one's even stronger and malformed.
03:10I wouldn't jump in and try to take this out this early in a cycle, but let's see how it
03:14goes.
03:36Clearly, that risk did not pay off.
03:40Right on. So, Selene died now for the first time?
03:47Starting back at the same crash landing hub, but with the same pistol as you had before.
03:56There's something looming on the left hand here.
04:00Yeah, so this is our mysterious device called Thonos.
04:04And what happens here is, as you play the game, you accumulate this permanent currency called Ether.
04:10This is something that persists across multiple sessions of the game.
04:14When you start each run, you are able to deposit this Ether into this device and accumulate progression towards unlocking
04:22new items.
04:22So this is one out of the multiple ways that we are unlocking more content for players the more they
04:29play the game.
04:33And I saw you picked up some sort of malignant key here as well. Is that for specific doors?
04:40Yeah, so keys are used for both doors and for our treasure chests.
04:45The malignant ones do carry a bit of that risk and reward again.
04:49In that particular case, it was picked up without triggering any malfunctions.
04:54Right.
04:56So that was a successful, that was a gamble that paid off.
05:11Am I assuming right that these are some sort of art pieces from previous civilizations?
05:19So what you're seeing here are Xeno archives. So these are essentially, in Returnal we cover the story of Selene,
05:25why she comes to Atropos, and what she's trying to achieve.
05:29And she's not alone here, there's also been another civilization. And these Xeno archives tell you their story.
05:36And these are largely visual storytelling, so it's something that you need to piece together.
05:45And I suppose finding a lot of loot from crates is very central to how you play the game.
05:53Seems like we have some sort of a malfunction being activated now. Harry, how does this work?
05:59Yeah, so now you've got a specific malfunction which, in this case, triggers a corruption of the map system.
06:06So you can see there's a lot of artifacts now on the screen, making it hard to discern at a
06:11glance where the exits are, which can of course be quite an obstacle in a game that's exploration heavy like
06:17Returnal.
06:18We do have the menu here, and you do have the weapons that you just discovered. And you can always
06:23do a deep dive there to get more narrative backstory.
06:28Now I do like the style of the menu, sort of old CRT screen with visual distortions and everything.
06:38For our tech in general, we're inspired by this kind of retro-futuristic aesthetic. So how the future was imagined,
06:45you know, 20, 30 years ago.
06:47You can see the bottom right hand corner here as well, the minimap is being scrambled as well. So that
06:53gives you some incentive to get rid of that malfunction.
06:56Yeah, and these are completely randomized by the way. So the malfunction that you will get and also the condition
07:04that will be required to repair that malfunction are completely randomly chosen. There's hundreds of permutations there as well.
07:14What is this? This is like a hidden room?
07:18Selene dropped into a treasure room here. This is just one out of many different possibilities for what can happen
07:25here.
07:25Currently, it seems like we had a choice of a fabricator to pick between two very valuable items.
07:32However, sometimes you might get unlucky and you might drop into a hellish encounter with another elite enemy, for instance.
07:40So this is again one of the many ways we're trying to keep the runs surprising for players.
07:46Right. So there's a lot of different types of challenges or surprises you might find in these hidden rooms.
07:56Yeah, definitely. We want to keep players on their toes and we want the game to be surprising you.
08:15Now, I see this action going on and she's being grabbed by this tentacles from above, but she's also using
08:23this sort of a blade weapon.
08:25So there's a melee weapon that you can use. I'm guessing that's an unlockable skill with the blade?
08:32Correct. Yes. So that's one of the many permanent progression abilities that Selene can unlock in the game.
08:39It does give you more strategic possibilities in combat and also grants access to new rewards and new areas that
08:47were previously inaccessible.
08:49Here we can see the portal to the next biome, but before that we have to find the anathema key.
08:56Yeah, anathema. So that means damming or curse.
09:07This is the shop area. So here you can use your obolites to buy different things.
09:14Greg, can you jump in and tell us a bit more about the options we have?
09:18Yeah. So basically you can use the ancient civilizations technology to fabricate items.
09:25So it can be things like consumables, which are single use items.
09:29There's also extra pedestals which can give you a health increase to increase your max health.
09:35And there's also a device there that helps interact with the social aspect of the game.
09:41So you get to contribute as a community to certain common goals there.
09:46And the shops in general seem to be sort of maybe a little bit of this calm in the heat
09:53of the storm,
09:54where you can just kind of concentrate on how do you want to upgrade your character for this specific run.
10:01That's something that I'm glad to begin to show here.
10:03In more of an extended look, you can begin to see the flow of Returnal,
10:06that it kind of ebbs and flows between the housemark sort of explosive action,
10:11but also has these more quiet exploratory moments.
10:14Yeah. I could see some sort of a red formation about to be spawned into the world.
10:22Yeah. So every time that you play through these environments,
10:26they will be populated with some unique combinations of enemies.
10:32And the difficulty, of course, will vary, just to keep things surprising.
10:37In this particular case, there was a lockdown triggered when you entered the room.
10:41And there's a central challenge in the middle where there is a slowly spawning large enemy,
10:47while separate waves of enemies are continuously spawning on the sides.
10:51So this is just one out of many examples of how we keep the combat encounters fresh.
10:59The only way to proceed now is to eliminate all of the enemies and the lockdown lifted.
11:35This is just one out of many times.
11:41I don't know.
11:41I guess.
11:41I'm fine.
11:42I'm fine.
11:43I get out of my way.
11:45I believe I'm fine.
11:46I guess what?
11:47You're fine.
11:50You're fine.

20:12come questo si può manifestare
20:14prima che abbiamo visto l'elite
20:23oh
20:24questo è un tipo di saline
20:28che è stato brought back to life
20:30questo è un'infecte scout
20:32può essere un'infecte challenge
20:33e si può anche vedere che l'attacca ha causato malfunzione
20:36quindi
20:36noi try to turnare le tables
20:39con il ritorno
20:40quando pensi che lo vediamo
20:42ci troviamo un po' di varietĂ
20:44molto interessante
20:48quindi ci sono usi
20:49altri player
20:50in un certo modo
20:52in un certo modo
21:14So the Crimson Waste Portal
21:16is now open again
21:17because we unlocked it
21:19on a previous run
21:20so you can choose
21:21directly to go back
21:22to that next biome as well.
21:30And as Harry said
21:32I would recommend
21:32that you should try
21:34to build yourself up
21:35every new biome you go to
21:36increases the challenge
21:37and the skill requirements
21:40and also deepens
21:41your understanding
21:41of the story
21:42but still
21:43it is worth
21:43building yourself up
21:44in the overgrown ruins
21:45and proceeding forward
21:47each time you play in
21:48from my perspective.
21:51Well that's why
21:52you also have
21:53some of these upgrades
21:54as you enter
21:54the new biome
21:56giving you a little
21:57leg up
21:59Here we can see
22:00some sort of
22:01yellow force shield
22:02I think that's
22:03a bit new
22:05Yeah
22:05this is another element
22:07in our
22:08progression
22:08that clearly
22:09you don't have
22:10the means
22:11to overcome it yet
22:14and we'll leave
22:15that up
22:15for players
22:16to discover
22:21Well coming back
22:22to the
22:23Crimson Waste
22:24here
22:24clearly
22:25it's a similar
22:26setting
22:27but there's
22:27some new
22:28things to discover
22:29like you mentioned
22:31the level
22:32does change
22:32upon every entry
22:52Some of the
22:53pesky flying
22:54monsters here
22:55again
22:55I
23:24Grazie a tutti.
23:55Grazie a tutti.
23:58Grazie a tutti.
24:02Grazie a tutti.
