00:11Elite Dangerous is a fantastic game which spans back over pretty much four decades now.
00:17It's a massively multiplayer game in its current iteration,
00:21where you get to become a space pilot and fly around the Milky Way,
00:25and that Milky Way is represented one to one.
00:28It's a fantastic technical achievement.
00:32With Odyssey, it's the development of everything that was cool and great and unique about the original game,
00:38but taken forward with a new dimension added,
00:40and that new dimension is that you are now able to traverse this environment on foot.
00:45The first time even that you get out and you actually see your ship in front of you,
00:49and you understand how massive these ships actually are, is kind of awe-inspiring.
00:54It's actually really quite dangerous.
00:56You know, you are millimetres away from the vacuum or from a thin atmosphere that could kill you in an
01:01instant.
01:02So the idea that you were enclosed in this suit and you could hear your own breathing
01:07was a really important part of the experience as far as we were concerned.
01:10One of the key things I really wanted to push was the idea that you'd kind of get that Neil
01:14Armstrong moment
01:15when you actually set foot on a planet for the first time.
01:18It had to have a slight emotional resonance to it.
01:22It had to feel like you were literally touching the ground for the first time.
01:25It's something we've hinted at with the ships, but now you can really do it.
01:29Exploration has always been a huge part of Elite.
01:32What's new is the fact that for the first time you'll be able to visit planets with light atmospheres.
01:37We have all of the data for these worlds that we create.
01:41Which planets have what types of atmospheres, their surface pressures, composition, their temperature.
01:48Now we get to recreate it for you to explore.
01:52We're really striving to make our planets look fantastic from an on-foot perspective
01:57where you can get much, much closer to them.
02:00This is both with new rocky planets and new ice worlds which look absolutely incredible.
02:05Worlds heavy in ice will end up with ice world-specific formations.
02:10You'll end up with linnae, palimpsests, cryovolcanism.
02:15Worlds which are more rocky, you'll end up with your mountains, your canyons, your ridges, your seas, basins like on
02:23the moon.
02:24The rocky planets have been upgraded to the point where now even the distant view looks so different.
02:29You're getting details that were never there before.
02:32Another exciting element of these new planets and these new terrains
02:36which the light atmosphere affords are some more vegetation, some more flora.
02:40The flora that we're producing, we've been really interested in making sure
02:44that they feel like convergent life.
02:46So that they're recognisable to us as different genuses and species.
02:51But they are also quite alien in themselves.
02:54We want them to be plausible though.
02:56The first time a player encounters one of these new organic life forms,
03:01they'll be able to sample it and extract genetic data from that organic life form.
03:06They can then log that in their codec, but also take back some of that genetic information as data
03:13and then trade that for rewards back at star ports and planet ports.
03:17Elite has always had a great heritage in allowing people to explore and rewarding them for finding things.
03:24And obviously we're going to continue that on foot.
03:26So we've got billions and billions of planets out there and we're really wanting our community to engage.
03:32Go into the black, set foot on new planets, get that moment where they are the first to set foot
03:38there
03:38and be able to report that back in.
03:41Exploration in particular, I think, generates those kind of magical moments
03:44where it's very, very difficult to get anything close to that, playing anything else.
03:51It's something that's really unique to Elite.
03:53I think what Odyssey really represents for our players is the fulfillment of the promise that we made
04:00right at the very start of Elite, that we would finally allow people to get out of their ships
04:06and walk on planetary surfaces.
04:09We have the full scale where you can fly from one end of the galaxy to the other
04:13and now you can land on some of the planets and explore them on foot.
04:22I am not going to be in the galaxy to the other planets.
04:25I am looking for it now.
04:28Let's go.
04:31Let's work on the galaxy.
