00:00Buongiorno, mi sono Henry Cavill e io gioco Geralt of Rivia in Netflix's new serie, The Witcher.
00:06I'm here to take you back to where we first met The Witcher, in this book, The Last Wish.
00:13Let's begin, shall we?
00:17As usual, cats and children noticed him first.
00:21A striped tomcat, sleeping on a sun-warm stack of wood, shuddered, raised his round head, pulled back his ears,
00:28hissed,
00:28and bolted off into the nettles.
00:30Three-year-old Dragomir, Fisherman Triggler's son, who was sitting on the hut's threshold,
00:35doing his best to make dirtier an already dirty shirt,
00:38started to scream as he fixed his tearful eyes on the passing rider.
00:44The Witcher rode slowly, without trying to overtake the hay cart obstructing the road.
00:49A laden donkey trotted behind him, stretching its neck,
00:53and constantly pulling the cord tied to the Witcher's pommel tight.
00:57In addition to the usual bags, the long-eared animal was lugging a large shape,
01:03wrapped in a saddlecloth on its back.
01:06The grey-white flanks of the ass were covered with black streaks of dried blood.
01:13The stranger was not old, but his hair was almost entirely white.
01:18Beneath his coat, he wore a worn leather jerk and laced up at the neck and shoulders.
01:23As he took off his coat, those around him noticed that he carried a sword.
01:28Not something unusual in itself.
01:31Nearly every man in Wisim carried a weapon,
01:34but no one carried a sword strapped to his back, as if it were a bow or a quiver.
01:40The stranger did not sit at the table with the few other guests.
01:43He remained standing at the counter, piercing the innkeeper with his gaze.
01:48He drew from the tankard.
01:50We'll give you a hand, the pockmarked man hissed.
01:53He knocked the tankard from the stranger's hand and simultaneously grabbed him by the shoulder,
01:58ducked his fingers into the leather strap which ran diagonally across the outrider's chest.
02:02One of the men behind him raised a fist to strike.
02:05The outsider curled up on the spot, throwing the pockmarked man off balance.
02:09The sword hissed in its sheath and glistened briefly in the dim light.
02:13The place seethed.
02:15There was a scream and one of the few remaining customers tumbled towards the exit.
02:19A chair fell with a crash and earthenware smacked hollowly against the floor.
02:24The innkeeper, his lips trembling, looked at the horribly slashed face of the pocked man,
02:31who, clinging with his fingers to the edge of the counter, was slowly sinking from sight.
02:36The other two were lying on the floor, one motionless, the other writhing and convulsing in a dark, spreading puddle.
02:45A woman's hysterical scream vibrated in the air, piercing the ears as the innkeeper shuddered, caught his breath, and vomited.
02:54The stranger retreated toward the wall, tense and alert.
02:57He held the sword in both hands, sweeping the blade through the air.
03:01No one moved. Terror, like cold mud, was clear on their faces, paralyzing limbs and blocking throats.
03:11Three guards rushed into the tavern with thuds and clangs.
03:15They must have been close by.
03:16They had truncheons wound with leather straps at the ready, but at the sight of the corpses, drew their swords.
03:21The Rivian pressed his back against the wall, and with his left hand, pulled a dagger from his boot.
03:28Throw that down, one of the guards yelled with a trembling voice.
03:32Throw that down, you thug, you're coming with us.
03:34The second guard kicked aside the table between himself and the Rivian.
03:37Go get the men, Treska, he shouted to the third guard, who had stayed closer to the door.
03:42No need, said the stranger, blurring his sword.
03:46I'll come by myself.
03:48You'll go, you son of a bitch, on the end of a rope, yelled the trembling guard.
03:52Throw that sword down or I'll smash your head in.
03:54The Rivian straightened.
03:55He quickly pinned his blade under his left arm, and with his right hand raised towards the guard,
03:59swiftly drew a complicated sign in the air.
04:02The clout nails, which studded his tunic from wrists to elbow, flashed.
04:07The guards drew back, shielding their faces with their arms.
04:10One of the customers sprang up while another darted at the door.
04:12The woman screamed again, wild, and ear-splitting.
04:16I'll come by myself, repeated the stranger, in his resounding, metallic voice.
04:22And the three of you will go in front of me.
04:24Take me to the Castellan.
04:27I don't know the way.
04:29Yes, sir, mumbled the guard, dropping his head.
04:33He made towards the exit, looking around tentatively.
04:37The other two guards followed him out backward, hastily.
04:41The stranger followed in their tracks, sheathing his sword and dagger.
04:46As they passed the tables, the remaining customers hid their faces from the dangerous stranger.
04:55And there you have it.
04:57It's not easy being a witcher.
04:58Trust me.
05:00I'd know.
05:01You'd think people would be a little more grateful when you saved them from monsters.
05:05Thank you for joining me for this reading.
05:07But as you know, Geralt's adventure is just beginning.
05:11Thank you.
05:13Thank you.
