00:00You can only cut a diamond using another diamond.
00:04It's the hardest natural material on our planet.
00:06Between retrieving the stones from the earth and the finished products you see in jewelry stores,
00:11a diamond goes through a complex process.
00:14Before they cut it, people need to consider which shape is best for the stone,
00:18so they don't throw too much of it away.
00:21One town in Norway, located north of the Arctic Circle,
00:25wants to become the first time-free zone in the world.
00:30The sun doesn't go down there at all between May 18th and July 26th.
00:35The locals don't want to follow the classic concept of time to get the most out of their 24 hours.
00:41Since they have constant daylight, they can't just act like the rest of the world.
00:46You can sometimes see people playing soccer in the middle of the night there
00:49or mowing their lawns and painting their houses at 2 a.m.
00:54The Leaning Tower of Pisa is tilted because the soil under the building's surface is really soft.
01:00This was probably frustrating for the people who constructed it,
01:02but they eventually figured out the soft soil is part of the reason why the tower is safer from earthquakes.
01:08Because of the softness of the soil and the tower's stiffness and height,
01:12the tower doesn't resonate with earthquake vibrations.
01:15So the reason the tower is tilted is exactly why it's still standing,
01:20even in such an unusual position.
01:22You don't actually see pitch black in a pitch black room.
01:26It's a specific phenomenon where you see dark light,
01:29or as people also refer to it, brain gray.
01:33It's a dark gray background many people see in the absence of light,
01:37and some even call it visual noise,
01:39since it's like an ever-changing field of small black and white dots.
01:44Watermelon is definitely one of the most refreshing and hydrating fruits,
01:48especially during hot summer days.
01:50But if you try some watermelon-flavored candies like gummy or hard candies,
01:54they're usually either mouth-puckeringly sour or very, very sweet.
01:59They aren't at all like the actual watermelon.
02:01It's basically impossible to replicate the great taste
02:04in the overly acidic-tasting watermelon candy.
02:07That's because its main chemical compounds are rare,
02:10and watermelon flavoring uses blends of cheap synthetic artificial flavors.
02:15Making high-quality realistic flavoring for candies and juices is possible,
02:20but would cost businesses a lot.
02:22Some people love the fake watermelon flavor,
02:25but most stick to their perception of how that fruity taste should be,
02:29and are not fans of it.
02:31Why is there an expiration date on a water bottle?
02:34Of course, water doesn't go bad,
02:36just like salt or sugar.
02:38But even though water doesn't go bad,
02:40the plastic bottle does.
02:42When it starts expiring,
02:43it leaches chemicals into the water.
02:45It won't make the water toxic,
02:47but it can change its taste,
02:48so you might not get the mountain spring fresh water you expected.
02:53Another reason for the expiration date on bottled water
02:56is there's a rule all consumable food products,
02:59including water,
03:00need to have an expiration date.
03:02Also, many companies that produce these bottles
03:05use the same machines for bottling sodas and some other beverages,
03:08and these do expire.
03:11So, it's way easier to just put a stamp on all bottles,
03:14whether necessary or not,
03:16than to buy new special machines just for bottles of water.
03:19How come identical twins don't have identical fingerprints?
03:23The pattern of ridges on your fingers is unique
03:26and stays the same throughout your whole life,
03:29which is why fingerprints are a valid feature
03:31when it comes to identification.
03:33Two people could be sharing identical fingerprints,
03:36but the chances here are less than one in 64 billion.
03:41Identical twins have slightly different fingerprints
03:43because the patterns are affected by both environmental factors
03:46during prenatal development and genetics.
03:50Fingerprints are not just something that's unique to humans.
03:53Gorillas and chimpanzees have fine ridges on their fingertips, too.
03:57They also seem to be unique to individuals,
03:59so we all probably inherited this from a common ancestor.
04:03Why does a green screen come in green and not some other color?
04:07When you film someone in front of a green screen,
04:10it's a technique known as chroma keying.
04:13The green color gets digitally filtered out
04:15so that you can replace it with any footage you want to add.
04:18If the subject you're filming is wearing something green,
04:21the background image fills that in as well.
04:23That's why it gives the impression the person you're filming has holes in them.
04:27And green is good for this,
04:29since it resembles human skin tones the least.
04:32Why do you feel dizzy after spinning?
04:35There are hairs lining the sides of tiny tubes
04:38filled with fluids that are located in your inner ear.
04:40When you move your head, these hairs detect acceleration,
04:44which means a change in the speed of a certain object.
04:47If you spin for long enough,
04:48your brain can't deal with the constant turn signals from your ear.
04:51And the way it adjusts is to zero them out.
04:54At the moment you stop,
04:56your ears report zero turning correctly,
04:58but your brain is still in the mode where it actively cancels this out.
05:02It actually thinks that you have now started spinning in the opposite direction.
05:07So, how can ice skaters do all those amazing things on the ice and not feel dizzy?
05:12When doing a pair of wet,
05:14they lock their eyes on a fixed point and keep it that way.
05:17They whip their head around really fast when they're not able to twist their neck further.
05:21Their spins are really fast,
05:23so they gradually train to overcome the feeling of dizziness
05:25and learn how to keep their eyes horizontal.
05:27That way, the view is spinning around one axis only.
05:32Bun stars aren't that heavy.
05:33They're just really dense.
05:35So dense that just one teaspoon of a neutron star would weigh 1 billion tons.
05:40They are the densest and the smallest type of star we know of.
05:44Imagine squeezing 1.4 times the mass of our sun into a sphere no bigger than 6 miles across.
05:51They're dense because of the way they form.
05:53The balance between an outward pressure process in its core
05:56and the gravitational force that tries to contact a star hold it together.
06:00When a star loses its supply of fuel,
06:03gravity wins,
06:04contracts the star,
06:05and eventually makes it collapse.
06:08When stars between 8 to 20 masses of the sun collapse,
06:12this squeezes their core to be super dense.
06:15Their outer layers rebound and BAM!
06:17Here's a supernova.
06:18It leaves behind an extremely dense neutron star.
06:23If a star has 20 solar masses or even more,
06:26the core doesn't collapse into a neutron star, but into a black hole instead.
06:31When you spend a day at the beach playing volleyball,
06:34swimming, or doing some other physical activities, you expect to be exhausted.
06:38But even when you spend a whole day just chilling around, you'll probably end up just as sleepy.
06:44Your body still gets very tired because it's doing a lot, even though you can't see it.
06:49First, it's always working to maintain your internal temperature.
06:52When it's hot outside, it requires way more effort, and your body cools off in a way it dilates your
06:57blood vessels.
06:58This boosts blood flow and helps your blood get closer to your skin.
07:02Over there, it can offload excess heat.
07:05That's also why some people blush when they're hot.
07:08You sweat more when it's hot outside, again, to cool down.
07:12And your metabolic and heart rate both increase,
07:14so you lose a lot of energy even when you're just lounging around at the beach.
07:19Why do animals have differently shaped pupils?
07:22The pupil is a hole in the iris of your eye that lets light pass through the retina.
07:27The iris muscles change the size of the pupil, which affects the amount of light that passes through.
07:33Because our muscles are placed in a ring that contracts equally towards the center, our pupils are round.
07:39This brings certain benefits.
07:41It provides consistent focus over the whole field of view.
07:44But circular pupils are unable to constrict as tightly as some other shapes of pupils.
07:50Animals that hunt or are a prey to bigger animals evolve to have big, sensitive eyes at night.
07:56Bright daylight is just overwhelming for them.
07:59That's why they have an extra set of muscles that pull the pupil into a narrow slit shape in daily
08:04light.
08:06Predatory animals have vertical slit pupils, like many snakes and cats.
08:11Such pupils help them to have sharper focus across the horizontal field of view
08:15and determine better how far their prey actually is.
08:19Animals with horizontal slit pupils, like sheep and horses, don't have sharp focus at the right and left edges,
08:25but they have wider peripheral vision.
08:28That way, they can spot predators coming after them a lot better.
08:33You're staring at the supermarket shelf, thirsty for some water.
08:36You'll probably pick the brand you always buy or get the cheapest one there.
08:41But wait, next time you buy a water bottle, make sure to check this out.
08:46Now, did you know that before you purchase anything that comes in a plastic bottle,
08:50the first thing you should do is look at the bottom?
08:53That's right, turn it over and look for the recycle symbol with a number inside of it.
08:58These numbered triangles actually indicate what kind of plastic was used in the production of your bottle.
09:04So, if it's marked with the number 1, know that it's only safe for single use.
09:09It means that if you let your bottle be exposed to sunlight and warmer temperatures,
09:14it will most likely start releasing toxic substances into your liquid.
09:18And drinking that will not be fun for you at all.
09:22Now, if the number inside is a 3 or a 7, best to avoid it in general.
09:27This is so because these bottles will most likely already be releasing chemicals that penetrate your drinks or food.
09:34And, as we know, lengthy exposure to it can result in severe health problems.
09:40Best to keep on the lookout for numbers 2, 4, 5, or the letters PP.
09:46These are the safest ones to consume from.
09:49They are suitable for multiple uses, and you can store them for a long time.
09:53But remember, store mainly cold water inside of them, and disinfect them from time to time.
09:58Putting any type of hot liquid inside of water bottles will mean the liquid inside will absorb the chemicals from
10:05the plastic.
10:06And still on the topic of plastic bottles, when you see packs of them bundled together by plastic, don't be
10:12shy.
10:13Open it up and grab as many bottles as you planned on buying.
10:18Supermarkets do this as a strategy, since they know that consumers are oftentimes lazy to rip the plastic and end
10:24up taking an entire pack of water or soda just to avoid the extra hassle.
10:30Now you've moved on to the refrigerated section of the supermarket.
10:33You look at all the cheese and wonder which one to take.
10:37Well, don't buy the ones that come in little slices, separated by plastic.
10:41Maybe we shouldn't even call this cheese, as the content of actual cheese is less than 51%.
10:47The manufacturers actually have to label them cheese product instead of cheese.
10:53And if you look for the fine print, you'll find this stamped somewhere in the packaging.
10:58When you're buying hard cheese, you should pay attention to its color, textures, and above all, the holes.
11:05First, the cheese must be uniform and without a white crust.
11:09First, and instead of picking cheese that has uneven and asymmetrical holes on it,
11:14you should go for the ones whose holes are evenly distributed on the whole chunk of cheese.
11:19Oh yeah, and before buying, try squeezing the cheese.
11:23It should immediately restore its shape.
11:25And there you go, you've got the perfect cheese to buy.
11:29Then fish.
11:30When picking it, make sure you take a good look at its eyes.
11:34And no, it shouldn't be love at first sight.
11:36You just need to check if the fish's eye is bright.
11:39Clouded and bulging eyes mean that the fish is old and probably past its consuming period.
11:45And for the meat lovers out there, make sure you're not buying glued meat.
11:50Oh yeah, you heard it correctly.
11:51Meat manufacturers have developed the habit of gluing together some pieces of meat before selling them.
11:57With the help of a little white powder, manufacturers glue together small pieces of meat in order to sell higher
12:04quantities of meat.
12:06It stretches the meat supply and helps meat producers to save money by reducing the waste of smaller pieces of
12:12meat.
12:12To make sure you're not buying glued meat, make sure to look for cracks in packaged meats.
12:18Even if that glue can put together meat fiber, it won't hold the fat.
12:22So if you've got cracks in the fat, that means that someone tried to glue together two or more pieces
12:28of meat.
12:29And even if you spot some cracks on the fiber, that can be the glue wearing off.
12:34Try this shopping hack and never buy glued meat ever again.
12:39Then kiwis.
12:40Don't buy them if they're way too soft.
12:43As it happens, kiwis that are super soft are also extra rotten or overripe.
12:48Well, maybe extra rotten isn't something that actually exists, but you get the idea.
12:54When kiwis get too soft, they release something called ethylene, which gives the fruit terrible acidity.
13:00To know which ones to buy, press your fingers against them and check their consistency.
13:04If your finger dips too much, it's a bad sign.
13:07But if it dips just a little and the fruit quickly recomposes itself, that's the point you're looking for.
13:14Now, if you're trying to eat healthy, don't buy anything packaged that has more than five ingredients to it.
13:21The baseline is the more ingredients in a packaged food, the more highly processed it probably is.
13:28Of course, the quality of these five ingredients also counts.
13:32But do give it a count next time you're choosing what to buy.
13:36Potato chips. Who doesn't love a good crunch?
13:40Well, but did you know that most of the packaged potato chips are actually composed of only 42% of
13:46potatoes?
13:47In the end, it's your choice.
13:49But if I were you, I wouldn't buy them.
13:52Check to see the ingredients before cracking them open.
13:56And those pre-packaged bags of vegetables that tell you they have 8 pounds of potatoes or carrots or apples
14:02inside of them?
14:03Do you think they really carry the amount they're selling you?
14:06As it turns out, no.
14:08You can check each bag with a luggage scale to see how much they actually weigh.
14:13But usually, those 8 pounds turn out to be 6.
14:18It's not that supermarkets are trying to trick us, but it happens that these bags are usually filled in a
14:23hurry by packagers.
14:25Sometimes, they don't really weigh the amount of produce they're putting into these 8-pound bags.
14:31Now, even if you prefer the pink-colored razor blade, don't buy it.
14:36Have you ever heard of something called the pink tax?
14:39As it turns out, goods that are made for women and girls end up costing 7% more than the
14:46same product made for the men and boys market share.
14:49It's believed that women are better customers and will pay the extra price for the same products.
14:56But if you're looking to save some money, just buy the blue ones.
15:00Now, before you buy fresh produce, make sure you take a good look at the PLU codes.
15:06In case you don't know, PLU codes are 4-digit or 5-digit numbers that appear on a small sticker
15:13that is applied to individual pieces of produce in the USA.
15:17A 4-digit code means that the produce was grown in a traditional rather than organic way.
15:24Make sure you do take a look at each individual product before they can get mismatched on the shelves.
15:30Now, 5-digit codes that begin with the number 9 almost always indicate that the product was grown organically.
15:37So, if you're looking for organic produce, these ones are the way to go.
15:44Never buy green potatoes.
15:47Green potatoes are something that actually does exist.
15:50And even if most of them never make it to the store, be aware.
15:54Green potatoes can cause health problems and are far from the best quality of potato to be ingested.
16:00They become green because they weren't stored properly or they were way too exposed to sunlight.
16:06The green in them is an indication of certain levels of toxins that are harmful to humans.
16:12So, steer away from those.
16:16Don't buy coffee that is older than 18 months.
16:19Look at the best before date when shopping.
16:21And if you get the chance, prefer whole beans rather than grounded coffee powder.
16:26The beans preserve the antioxidant properties from the coffee.
16:30And grounding them up just before drinking them is usually the best way to benefit from all the healing qualities
16:35of coffee.
16:37And last but not least, do your online shopping between Tuesday and Thursday.
16:42It may sound strange, but studies have shown that the best way to catch up on really good deals is
16:48to shop between these days.
16:50Prices are as low as they can get.
16:52And if you're looking to save money, forget Sundays.
16:55That's a total no-go.
