00:06I'm Al Driver from the Chronicles of Spellborn
00:09I work on game design, specifically on combat
00:13And this dev journal video is about a combat stress test we did a couple of weeks ago
00:22Where basically we ask everybody in the office to grab a level 1 character and start hacking at each other
00:29With me is Matthew Florians
00:32Yeah, I just stand around here at the moment
00:35So what you'll see here is the starter area around the respawn point in Hogsmoot
00:41Normally Hogsmoot is not a PvP enabled zone, but for testing purposes we enable that
00:50This wasn't a staged fight, people are just ungrouped, hacking away at others
00:57Mostly it's people with low health so they can get their easy kills
01:01The targeting allows you to pick any target at any time and just start attacking it
01:06You don't have to lock it or designate it or something
01:11You can just start executing skills on it and they will hit if your aim is correct
01:16Regardless of what you have targeted
01:19You can time your movement just right to dodge enemy weapon swing
01:25You'll see here that the player who's executing the skills will get a lot of missed messages
01:30That was bad at aiming
01:32This is from Matthew's point of view indeed
01:34Well, the missed message is also used as a placeholder for some other effects
01:41So it might just be partial damage or a player might be immune to a damage type for a certain
01:48amount of time
01:49The way it will show missed as well
01:52So I am in fact better than it appears here
01:54Yeah, you're hitting more skills than the UI is leading you to believe
02:00Here's a classic piece of furball
02:03I don't expect many of these scenes in the Hawksmith landing without PvP
02:09But this movie wasn't intended to be published to the bat or the public
02:17But it turned out so great and so much fun that we ended up frapsing it
02:22And added a little explanation to it
02:25And just published it for you guys because we were having so much fun
02:29It reminds me a lot of FPS games
02:31Where you're really frantically shooting and running around
02:34And in that sense, combat, which is the heart of our aim
02:37It really does feel like a game
02:39If your aim is right, you'll get him down
02:42Yeah, we try to keep a big draw distance
02:46Especially for the shooting range
02:47We want people to have a bow and think
02:51Well, I should be able to shoot a bear in quite some distance
02:54And actually be able to do so
02:56Another specific thing about the Chronicles of Spellborn
02:59Is that weapons and armor and everything you're wearing basically does not have any stats
03:03So there's no hidden dice rolls
03:05No, even if you're fighting a high level player or lower level player
03:11There's somebody with that pants here
03:13Yeah, it doesn't matter at all
03:16Basically if your sword hits
03:17Then you get the damage that you're doing
03:21You won't have any unfair calculations with chances
03:26Or damage modifiers because someone is of a different level
03:30Or has a different stat which is unachievable for you
03:34And because everybody looks the way they want to look
03:37You can even single them out in a hectic verbal like this one
03:41Yeah, that turned out much better than we anticipated
03:45Hope you enjoyed it
03:46Yeah, I hope you enjoyed it as well
03:48And I hope to meet you all in verbals like these
03:52That will be awesome
03:54Yeah, I hope you enjoyed it
03:57Let's see
03:57Don't
03:57It
03:57It
03:57It
