05:15So Team Fortress 2 is the sequel to the granddaddy of class-based multiplayer action games.
05:22Also developed by then students in Australia, Robin Walker and John Cook in the mid-90s as a mod for
05:30Quake.
05:36The inspiration for the art style of Team Fortress 2 came from our internal playtesting.
05:40We had a version of the game up and running.
05:42It was very rough and abstract.
05:44But the more we played it, the more we realized the game was about sort of this over-the-top
05:48action where everything's a little exaggerated.
05:50And we wanted a visual that sort of matched that feeling.
05:53After nine years of working on Team Fortress 2, I'd have to say the biggest challenge is shipping on time.
05:58But beyond that, balancing the classes took us a significant amount of time.
06:01When we started Team Fortress 2, one of the first things we were interested in doing was trying to make
06:05sure that all the classes were more unique than they were in Team Fortress 1.
06:09There are nine different classes in Team Fortress 2, sort of roughly divided into three different groups.
06:14The offensive, the defensive and the support roles.
06:16The soldier is sort of the backbone of the offensive group, carrying a lot of firepower in his shoulder-mounted
06:20rocket launcher.
06:21The scout, on the other hand, is all about maneuverability.
06:24He needs to dodge as much as he hits enemies.
06:26The pyro is sort of much more about ambushing.
06:28His flamethrower is extremely lethal but has a very short range.
06:31In the defensive category, you've got guys like the demoman and the engineer and the heavy.
06:35The demolitions guy is all about destruction.
06:36He has a lot of explosive weaponry.
06:38The engineer, on the other hand, builds sentry guns and they kill the enemy for him.
06:42The heavy weapons guy doesn't need a lot of explanation.
06:44He's got the biggest gun and the most firepower.
06:46And then in the final group, you've got the support guys, who are the medic and the spy and the
06:50sniper.
06:50And they're sort of much more specialized roles.
06:52The medic is everyone else's best friend.
06:54He's the guy who keeps you alive before you're under enemy fire.
06:56The spy is outwitting opponents.
06:58He's stabbing them in the back when they think he's their friend.
07:00And finally you get to the sniper.
07:02He's the longest range class, of course.
07:04He's picking off opponents from miles away.
07:06I hope Team Fortress 2 is worth the wait.
07:07Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
07:10Grave some more!
07:24Putin Fortress 3 is a winning player of the game.
07:29Good job!
07:31Look anytime Nixon, you have been in the game position!
07:34If you were to advance your seat, it started heinous and only real league.
07:36che sono stati a graduare di DigiPen
07:38Institute of Technology
07:39in Redmond, Washington.
07:41Every year DigiPen holds
07:42un expo per i raggiungi seniors
07:44per portare a dare a vedere
07:45a prendere a vedere
07:45a student's project
07:48and hopefully get them jobs.
07:50So a couple of people
07:51from Valve swung by
07:52and took a look at our project
07:53and apparently thought
07:55it was interesting enough
07:55to invite us to come to Valve.
07:57They came in and demoed
07:58the game for us
07:59and about halfway through
08:00their demo Gabe just
08:01stopped them cold
08:02and said you guys
08:02must come work at Valve
08:04and create your next project
08:05here on the Source engine
08:07and two years later
08:08we have Portal
08:09as the experimental piece
08:10of the orange box.
08:11Portal is a mind-bending
08:12puzzle game
08:14that allows you
08:15to manipulate
08:16and bend 3D space
08:18to your will.
08:18The story in Portal
08:19is that you are
08:21a test subject
08:22in the Aperture Science Laboratories.
08:24You're basically used
08:25as a rat in a maze
08:26to try and test
08:27the Portal weapon.
08:28The Portal gun works
08:29by giving you the ability
08:30to create two dynamically
08:32linked portals.
08:33You have an orange portal
08:34and a blue portal.
08:35If you go in the blue portal
08:36you'll come out the orange portal
08:38and if you go in the orange portal
08:39you'll come out the blue.
08:41One of our favorite
08:41portal techniques
08:42is called the fling.
08:45So what you do
08:45is you place one portal
08:47close by your feet
08:47and you place another portal
08:49behind you
08:50high up on a wall.
08:51If you jump in the portal
08:52you'll come flinging out
08:54the portal that's really
08:55high up in the air.
08:56We use this for all sorts
08:58of puzzles later on
08:59in the game.
08:59We hope that the Portal gun
09:00will change players' expectations
09:02much in the same way
09:03that the gravity gun did
09:04for Half-Life 2.
09:05With the gravity gun
09:07players were able
09:08to manipulate physics
09:09in a way they never had before.
09:11And in Portal
09:12you're able to manipulate
09:133D space in a way
09:15that you never had before.
09:16This next test
09:17is impossible.
09:22Have we been surprised
09:23by the success
09:24of Half-Life?
09:25Absolutely.
09:26We had no idea
09:27when we were starting off
09:29that the rules
09:30that we had taken
09:31out of the community
09:32about how to build
09:33a game like this
09:33were going to have
09:34such a large impact
09:35both in terms of the sales
09:37and the critical success
09:38of the game.
09:39I wouldn't say
09:40that the best-selling
09:42action franchise
09:43of all time
09:44on any platform
09:45is a critical, darling.
09:46Yeah, it's been
09:48heralded by the critics
09:49and won more
09:49Game of the Year awards
09:50than probably any other
09:51action franchise
09:52but it's also sold
09:53more copies.
09:54So I think when you have
09:55the fans voting
09:56with their dollars
09:57and the critics voting
09:58with their awards
09:58you have something
09:59that is truly a phenomenon
10:00and something that
10:02can be recognized
10:03as best of brief.
10:05The Orange Box
10:05is set to ship
10:06on October 10th
10:07for the PC and the 360
10:08and in time for the holidays
10:09on the PlayStation 3.
