00:12Welcome to StarCraft II Battle Report.
00:15My name is Dustin Browder, I'm the lead designer on StarCraft II.
00:18And I'm Robert Simpson, an esports team member.
00:21We've got a great game for you here today.
00:23We've got two of our players at the studio,
00:25Yanho Li playing as the Zerg and David Kim playing as the Protoss.
00:30They'll be playing on Scrapyard.
00:31This is a new map we have for StarCraft II that's got a lot of really interesting features on it.
00:35And we can see here, we've got Yanho as the Blue Zerg in the upper left part of the map.
00:40And as we move across the map, we'll see both of these players are actually very close to one another,
00:45right across this narrow gap of space.
00:46And here we come up on David Kim playing as the White Protoss.
00:50There's a lot of interesting terrain features on Scrapyard,
00:53the first of which is going to be this rather large front ramp that leads into your base.
00:59It's a lot harder to block than the rest of the maps that we've seen in any of the battle
01:03reports.
01:03Yeah, absolutely. A lot more challenging for the Protoss player on this map to block that ramp
01:06and defend themselves from any early aggressive Zerg moves.
01:09Coming down to this part of the map, we can see there's a natural expansion.
01:12This is a place both players are likely to try to look to lay down some additional buildings
01:16and start collecting some additional resources.
01:18And right up here in the middle, there's a small group of vents putting up some smoke.
01:21Units can't see past that smoke, so it's a great place to hide your units.
01:24Now the map continues to lead down into another expansion as well as a very important point of interest
01:30in the center of the map. This is a Zelnaga Watchtower.
01:32When a ground unit gets by one of these, it illuminates a large area of vision around it.
01:37And surrounding that Zelnaga Watchtower is also those vents that block line of sight.
01:41Yeah, so you can see, just move past the Watchtower and very briefly there while you activate it,
01:44you saw exactly how much vision that thing revealed.
01:46It's a very critical strategic resource for both players to try to control.
01:50Control of that Watchtower can be the key to victory on this map.
01:53And you can see, David Kim's got his first probe moving very aggressively across the map
01:57and right into the Zerg base.
01:58Ooh, and it looks like David Kim just barely caught sight of Yunho Lee,
02:01moving his drone out of his base, looking like he's going for a natural expansion currently.
02:05He is saving up those resources, as you can see in the overlay in the top left corner of the
02:09screen,
02:09and David Kim blocks it right as he gets up to that 300 mineral marker.
02:13We can see Yunho Lee sending out another drone, trying to scare off David Kim's probe,
02:17but David Kim is resilient in his harassment.
02:20Just keep dancing that probe around, he's blocked the building,
02:23the Zerg player's trying to place another hatchery there,
02:25he really needs to get another hatchery down so he can start resourcing from that location.
02:29Instead, the Protoss player has blocked the expansion,
02:32has prevented him from putting that building into play,
02:34and you can see the Zerg player has just given up on it,
02:36he's returned to his base to continue harvesting,
02:38and the probe is just loose, running around the Zerg base,
02:41seeing whatever it wants to see, totally scouting the Zerg, even counterattacking there,
02:44looking to sort of harass this Zerg player and just keep the pressure up
02:47at this very, very early part of the game.
02:49David Kim's doing a great job with that probe right now.
02:52For every time that he pulls off just a few of those drones off of Yunho Lee's minerals,
02:56it really puts Yunho behind for a good portion of the game.
02:59Absolutely, just harassing his economy is very important in the early part of the map.
03:02Now you can see there is a way for these players to approach each other,
03:04it's a lot closer than going around that Zelnaga Watchtower,
03:07those destructible rocks there across that narrow bridge,
03:09and players can move over, they can use their forces to destroy those rocks,
03:12and once the rocks are down, you can move freely back and forth across that bridge.
03:16It's a very, very powerful way to sort of surprise the enemy.
03:18They're expecting you to come from a different direction,
03:20and instead you snap those rocks open and you push right through the middle,
03:24and we'll see if that's a factor in this game.
03:26Now, David Kim's base, we can see him build a Cybernetics Core in addition to an assimilator,
03:30so we're very, very likely to see some early stalkers out on the field.
03:33Back over at Yunho's base, David Kim is not giving up,
03:36he is getting the most money harassment possible out of this probe,
03:41and oh, we can see him actually chasing, looking like Yunho is again going for the natural expansion,
03:45and will the probe make it in time?
03:46No!
03:47The probe does not make it in time,
03:49and David Kim had managed to keep that expansion off the map for a huge amount of time,
03:53but the Zerg player finally does get it into position,
03:55and here you can see there's the Zelnaga Watchtower,
03:57and then this Zerg player, he doesn't control it with that Overlord,
03:59but he can watch it, so he'll know if David Kim has control of the Watchtower,
04:03and he'll know whether or not David can see him coming,
04:06and you can see the probe moves into position,
04:08and it's activated the Watchtower,
04:09so the Protoss player really wants to make sure that he sees what's going on.
04:12You can see in the overlay there are now six Zerglings in production about to move out of the map,
04:16and two of them are already on the way,
04:18so the Zerg are beginning their aggressive move,
04:20the Zerling a very fast unit, very aggressive, very dangerous,
04:23and here come the Zerg in small numbers starting to swarm across the map.
04:26That Overlord knows exactly where the probe is,
04:28so those Zerglings are going to be able to run right through those vents,
04:31and start harassing that probe. Will the probe be able to make it back to his base?
04:33We have a couple more Zerglings chasing in behind him,
04:36but it looks like the probe moves just fast enough to barely escape those Zergling attacks.
04:40It's just going to go to wind. There's not a lot defending.
04:42David Kim's base right now, the Protoss is looking a little weak.
04:44Here come a couple of Nullifiers. This is a new unit to StarCraft II.
04:47It's got a very powerful ability called a Force Field that it can use to block terrain.
04:52You can see the Nullifiers are moving out, but they don't want to get trapped.
04:55They don't want to get surrounded, so they move back up the ramp,
04:56and you can see the Zerg are hiding in the vents, gathering their forces, sort of waiting.
05:00Here comes some more Zerglings, it looks like, from the south, moving up into those vents,
05:04and the Zerg is lurking there, waiting for enough forces to move in,
05:06and here they go, moving into the Protoss base.
05:08Right now, that's eight Zerglings trying to move up to the Protoss base,
05:10but those are two beautiful Force Fields set out by David Kim.
05:14He can now micro one of his Nullifiers around,
05:16while the other one continues to lay down Cover Fire.
05:17The Zerglings know they have no chance and start heading back into the base,
05:20but it's not looking like two Zerglings are going to pose a very large threat
05:24against those Nullifiers and all the probes in the base.
05:26Even the probes could turn and fight if they needed to,
05:28and you can see the Zerglings are trying to remain a threat, trying to harass it.
05:31They don't really get much out of it, they're quickly destroyed by the Nullifiers,
05:33and the Nullifiers are sort of free to move back to protect the front of the Protoss base.
05:37Meanwhile, the Zerg have gathered in the smoke, are trying to hide,
05:40and that's a Zealot and three Nullifiers moving out to engage.
05:43It looks like the Zerg are going to have to run for it,
05:45they're not going to be able to hang out there and survive.
05:47Ooh, it looks like David Kim might have just barely seen that one Zerglings move around.
05:50Oh, and he was going for his natural expand as well, and that probe was able to see
05:54all of those Zerglings moving around.
05:55Now the Nullifiers see them, but they're very slow,
05:58so those Zerglings are going to be able to make it up into David Kim's base and harass.
06:02And there goes some Zerglings, see what kind of damage they can do.
06:04Moving in, there's the warp in, bringing in some additional forces,
06:06another Nullifier in play, and there's a force field trapping those Zerglings,
06:09preventing them from right away.
06:10The probes turn to counter-attack, and they quickly destroy all of those Zerglings,
06:15and the Protoss are still perfectly safe right there in their base,
06:18despite that very clever and very fast harassment by the Zerg.
06:22So generally, you see force field used as more of a defensive measure,
06:24but in that case, David Kim actually used it to trap his enemy within his base to kill his forces.
06:29Yeah, absolutely. Against a force like the Zerg that's so speedy and so quick,
06:32force field can be used both offensively and defensively.
06:34As we've seen time and time again in our early versions of this game,
06:38force field's just a very, very powerful weapon against the Zerg,
06:40especially when playing against them when they're swarming.
06:42Any kind of map where there's a lot of open space.
06:45It's a very powerful weapon to control and channel the Zerg,
06:47and of course, it's also very powerful to prevent the Zerg from escaping,
06:50should they try to do so.
06:51And you can see that Overlord getting a little bit harassed there by the Nullifiers,
06:54but the Nullifiers don't quite have the range,
06:56and the Overlord is going to escape.
06:58Now, David Kim is massing his forces over by that Zelnaga Watchtower.
07:01He can now see that large area of vision, which is very strong.
07:04He sees no units coming.
07:05He knows that he just killed a bunch of Yunho Lee's Zerglings,
07:09so it's time to take advantage of that window of opportunity.
07:11Yeah, so he's moving in now. He feels like he's got the advantage,
07:13and he wants to press.
07:14He knows the Zerg are down a few Zerglings,
07:16and he thinks he might have enough to do some damage here.
07:18Now, there is a Spinecrawler in play, and a bunch of Roaches.
07:20This is kind of a problem for this Protoss Force.
07:22They don't have really the power to deal with this.
07:24Great use of the Force Field there, trapping half of them.
07:26Wow, and there's the Burrow, the counter by the Zerg,
07:29preventing him taking any real damage there,
07:31as the Nullifiers move into the Zerg base,
07:33trying to do some damage and get some damage out of this attack.
07:36Oh, but there's too many Roaches. The Nullifiers have to continue to move up into-
07:39Oh, wow, and they lock out all of Yunho's defenses,
07:42except for just a Queen and one Roach are up there,
07:45but they have to Burrow, or else they're going to get Focus Fired down.
07:47So now the Nullifiers, again, have free reign over Yunho's base.
07:52What a great move, using that Force Field to block them out.
07:54He's really got inside. Look, all of the Drones are underground.
07:56They're not able to resource. It's a really expensive attack,
07:59but still, oh, more Force Fields, protecting his Nullifiers from any attack,
08:03and the Drones are still underground, not able to harvest even more with the Force Fields,
08:07and now it looks like the Drones are getting very, very aggressive.
08:09They've got to fight back. They've got to get into position.
08:11The Nullifiers are quickly overwhelmed by those Drones,
08:14and, of course, by the Roaches, but still, what a great use of Force Field.
08:17What a great aggressive approach by the Protoss player,
08:20trying to get some damage in there into play and really sort of tear down that economy.
08:24You can see David Kim, of course, is still watching the rest of the map.
08:26There's another Watchtower here in the southern part of the map,
08:29which watches these high-yield resources.
08:31This is a very important thing for players to capture in the game.
08:33Get a lot of money from those yellow Crystals, but you can see now the Zerg are on the move.
08:39David Kim may have miscalculated by that aggressive move.
08:41Here come the Roaches moving on the map.
08:43That's a significant force. Each one of those units,
08:45each one of those Zerg units regenerates very, very rapidly,
08:48and we've got some Stalkers here to counter them,
08:50but that's a very large Zerg force moving into play.
08:54So as you can see, the Roaches very clearly outnumber all of these Stalkers,
08:57but we did see David Kim research the blink ability,
09:00and oh my god, there it is.
09:01He's moving away, blinking just as his Stalkers get to the kill range from all of those Roaches.
09:05He only gets one of the Stalkers down.
09:07We still see a ton of blinks going on.
09:09He only lost one Stalker out of that enormous attack.
09:11We see the Roaches continue to move in to David Kim's base and try to pressure.
09:15We see another Force Field trapping all of the Roaches inside his natural expansion.
09:18David Kim is now able to micro around those Stalkers and continue to take out the Zerg threat.
09:24There was a great use of Force Field.
09:25It didn't look like it was that dangerous,
09:26but you can see even now it's preventing those forces from coming up very, very quickly,
09:29and you can see how badly damaged the Protoss are in this battle.
09:33The Roaches regenerate very, very quickly.
09:34The Stalker is not regenerating almost at all.
09:36Their shields regenerate, but not very quickly at all.
09:38And you can see the Protoss are slowly being worn down by this Roach advance.
09:41There's some more Warpins coming into play there.
09:43Some more Stalkers are coming to the defense,
09:45and the Protoss player is just backing up, buying time, using Blink,
09:49and he's managed to just beat down that Zerg Force.
09:52Oh, what a great use of Blink.
09:53Continuing the pursuit now, pushing right back.
09:55It looked like the Protoss player was in a lot of trouble right there,
09:58but he used Blink very, very effectively and he bought himself time.
10:01That gave him time for more Warpins.
10:03And there's another Blink as he chases down this Protoss Force,
10:06relentlessly wearing away at them until finally the Zerg are forced to burrow underground
10:10and hide from this very, very dangerous Protoss Force.
10:13And here comes the Protoss again on the offensive,
10:16using a Phoenix, an air unit, to hunt Overlords.
10:18This is very, very dangerous for the Zerg player,
10:20as his Overlords are hunted and destroyed in the sky.
10:23And here comes the Protoss pushing against the Zerg.
10:26So we see a ton of Stalkers moving up into now Yunho Lee's expansion,
10:29but there are too many Zerglings.
10:31Those Stalkers are not strong enough against enough units that can surround them.
10:35They only have Blink, and that's on a 10 second cooldown.
10:37So those things are going to get surrounded again because the Zerglings are so fast,
10:40and David Kim's assault is thwarted.
10:42Yeah, and you can see just how badly those units were damaged in the previous attack.
10:46The Stalkers were quickly surrounded.
10:47They couldn't really get away.
10:48They couldn't use their speed.
10:49Even the Blink was of limited use.
10:50And here comes a combo.
10:52Here comes a Phoenix and Void Ray combo,
10:54using the Graviton Beam to pick that Queen in the air.
10:57See, she's floating in there helpless right now from the Graviton Beam,
10:59and the Void Ray using his very powerful attack to just power down that Queen.
11:04You can see the Protoss are just on the offensive in the air.
11:07Meanwhile, the Zerg are on the offensive in the ground,
11:08moving in to engage this base.
11:10There's a lot of Zealots and a Photon Cannon
11:11as the Protoss back up and use that very narrow position,
11:15trying to trap the Zerg where they can't get a surround.
11:17The Zerg want to wrap around their enemy,
11:19but the Protoss want to fight in a narrow frontage.
11:21And the Protoss had that advantage there,
11:22so the Zerg didn't like it.
11:23They moved away, and now they're going to see
11:25what kind of damage they can do in what appears to be
11:27a fairly helpless Protoss base.
11:29So it looks like David Kim's main base is very, very defenseless at this point.
11:33So we see a couple of those Zerglings looking to move away from the pack,
11:36and oh no, we see a couple of Banelings getting morphed in
11:39over on that left side of the map.
11:40Meanwhile, all the Zerglings and the Roaches are trying to distract the Protoss units,
11:43make sure that he does not get any units over there to attack them,
11:47because right now, while those Banelings are hatching,
11:49they're extremely vulnerable to any attacks.
11:51That's right, and those Banelings do explode when they get close to the enemy,
11:54and here they come, moving in.
11:55The Zealots have no defense against those things,
11:56they don't want to fight them except in small groups,
11:58try to sacrifice the Zealot, but he fails,
11:59and here come the, moving in, oh my god, took out a ton of those probes with those Banelings,
12:05and both photon cannons are down.
12:07What a great use of the Baneling against that Protoss economy.
12:11Now, despite the fact that Yunho did just make it in there with that many Banelings,
12:16we can still see that David Kim does have the economic advantage.
12:18He has 44 probes out on the field, versus Yunho only having 37 drones out there.
12:23This is really going to make a difference in the long-term play.
12:25Yeah, he's willing to catch up in his economy.
12:26He did a lot of damage, he's helped right a lot of his issues right there,
12:29and got himself back into sort of an even footing, more or less,
12:32but he's going to need to keep building workers if he's going to stay in this game.
12:34You can see he's got Banelings there morphing in that hidden area,
12:37and another expansion.
12:38Meanwhile, in the middle of the map, the Protoss player is tearing through those rocks,
12:42and prepared to make what may be a little bit of a surprise attack on the Zerg.
12:45Ooh, but it's apparently not that much of a surprise attack.
12:48I believe that Yunho had an Overlord somewhere nearby,
12:50so that he could see those destructible rocks going down.
12:52We see David Kim working through that second destructible rock,
12:55only a few more seconds, and he'll be able to move into Yunho's base,
12:57what he thinks will be freely.
12:59He now sees, oh wow, looks like Yunho's going to be tricking him,
13:02trying to bait all of those Protoss forces into chasing only his four ruches,
13:07and BOOM!
13:07Oh no!
13:08Ten Banelings jump up out of the ground.
13:10All of those Banelings just took out all of the Zealots,
13:12and you can see, only by using force field,
13:13that he narrowly escaped total destruction of his force right there.
13:17Still huge amounts of damage done to the Protoss,
13:19all of those Zealots taken out,
13:20and you can see that, once again, the Zerg are in a really great position here.
13:24They've got another expansion going down,
13:26there are other expansions working great,
13:29and the Protoss player just took a ton of damage from those Banelings.
13:33Up on the resource level, we saw just now that David Kim is still resourcing
13:36about double the minerals per minute that Yunho Lee is currently able to gather.
13:42So, David Kim, over the rest of the course of this game,
13:45is likely just going to plain outmass him,
13:47unless Yunho makes good use of that second expansion.
13:50Yeah, he's really going to have to get that up and running to take advantage of it.
13:52And you can see, here we go, moving in again,
13:53a couple of Banelings were taken down before they could morph.
13:55He's got a few Banelings hit underground.
13:56Oh, that's not good for those Nullifiers.
13:58Wow, what a ton of damage against those Nullifiers,
14:01losing some critical aspects of his force.
14:03He's using the Blink Micro, trying to play Keep Away,
14:05but he's just really having a lot of trouble against this persistent Zerg force.
14:09Oh, and here come an Infester.
14:10He's coming around over here.
14:12They have a Neural Parasite ability, which is that Mind Control,
14:14and we can see a Mind Control, that Immortal,
14:15and now he is using David Kim's Immortal to kill David Kim's Stalkers.
14:20And a Stalker is controlled as well.
14:21A lot of Queens have been destroyed.
14:23That's very important for the Zerg not to lose those Queens,
14:25but still, the damage is done.
14:26The Zerglings are out.
14:27Here comes some more Infestors waddling around the map,
14:29before quickly burrowing underground.
14:30You can see the Stalkers are trying to do some damage,
14:32trying to get into the base, see what they can do.
14:34There's too many Zerglings, and they're quickly overcome,
14:36and another Protoss attack is pushed back by the Zerg.
14:40Ooh, losing three Queens is a really big deal for Yunho at this point,
14:44because he really needs to have those out on the field to give him that extra spawn
14:48of larvae.
14:49Yeah, he really needs that for his economy.
14:50It's very, very important.
14:51But you can see the Protoss player here is also teching.
14:53Oh, here come the Zerg moving in, trying to do some damage,
14:56but the Photon Cannon is going to keep those Zerglings at bay.
14:58They can't get the surround of the Photon Cannon,
15:00and of course, the probes could join in the fight.
15:02And here is the real danger.
15:04Colossus are being built on that high ground location by the Protoss,
15:07so that's a real threat to this Zerg player.
15:10That's right. David Kim's doing a little sneaky tech up there, building those two robotics
15:14facilities and making those Colossus out of anywhere that Yunho was able to see so far.
15:19David Kim is gathering out in front of his base, but because those Infestors are able
15:22to move while burrowed, Yunho knows exactly what David Kim is up to.
15:26Yeah, so he's seen everything that's going on there.
15:27He, of course, hasn't seen the Colossus yet.
15:29He's been using his Scouts on the main base.
15:31He doesn't know the threat of the Colossus.
15:33Potentially, he's even in play at this point, though he could guess.
15:35And we can see over here there is a warp prism over here.
15:38This is a way that the Protoss player could warp in some additional units.
15:42You can see he's hitting it over here for a rainy day,
15:44no doubt hoping to sort of distract the Zerg player,
15:48and then move in and warp in some additional forces down there.
15:50Oh my goodness! Neural Parasite on the Colossus.
15:53The Colossus have been mind controlled, and you can see they've been trapped now.
15:57Using Force Field, they've been trapped by their own forces,
16:00and the Colossus are just destroying the Protoss forces.
16:03What a great turn by the Zerg.
16:05Yungo is using those Colossus to do terrible, terrible damage to David Kim's own army.
16:11We can see the Zerglings are now able to surround those Colossus
16:13as they finish off their Neural Parasite.
16:16What looked like just a brutal, brutal attack by the Protoss was quickly,
16:21quickly turned by the Zerg, but you can see the distraction may have worked.
16:24While the Zerg were all out in front fighting,
16:26there were some additional Stalkers warped in.
16:28Meanwhile, this other part of the map, the Protoss are on the attack.
16:31They destroyed a Zerg expansion, and it looks like the Zerg are in a little bit of trouble here.
16:35They managed to sort of fight back all the threats that they're throwing at them,
16:38but the economy advantage is really starting to show a key advantage here for the Protoss
16:42as they just continue relentlessly attacking.
16:44Here are the Stalkers just tearing up this Zerg expansion.
16:47So we can see a few Infestors and a couple Queens come into play.
16:49We do see that Neural Parasite again coming out and surrounding,
16:53taking over a couple more Stalkers, able to finish off that force.
16:56We see the Queen is trying to take out the Phase Prism, but it looks like four Immortals warp into
17:01play,
17:01and there's just not much that Yunho Lee is able to do to stop it.
17:04What a huge force. Four Immortals.
17:06And there's the GG. The Zerg player knows that game is effectively done.
17:10Good game, he says, to David Kim.
17:12What a great game between those two players.
17:14We saw some excellent micro between Roaches and Burrow, as well as the Stalkers with Blink.
17:19Absolutely. Thanks everybody for joining us for this StarCraft II Battle Report.
