00:06From Television City in Hollywood, CBS presents America's most exciting new show, The Joker's
00:12Wild.
00:22Now, here's the host of our show, Jack Curry.
00:31Thank you very much.
00:32I'm very proud to welcome once again to The Joker's Wild, a program where knowledge is
00:36king and lady luck is queen, a program where winners can win up to $25,000 in cash and
00:43prizes.
00:43And yesterday, on our program, we were right in the middle of a very exciting game when
00:47our time ran out.
00:48In just a moment, we're going to finish that game and see if our current champion can retain
00:52his crown or whether he'll be defeated.
00:53So, Johnny Jacobs, would you reintroduce our two players, please?
00:57That'll do, Jack.
00:58Our champion from yesterday, a former college student who'd like to win enough money to
01:02go back to school, Ed Hackey.
01:05And here's the challenger, a former Internal Revenue Service employee, Mary Sprouse.
01:14Welcome back to the program, Ed and Mary.
01:16Ed, you did very well yesterday.
01:17You won one game.
01:18You were $550 for the good, and you won a number of prizes, and then you decided to risk it
01:22and go on and play against Mary.
01:24Mary, how are you feeling?
01:25Fine.
01:26You accumulated $450 on the program yesterday, and you were very, very close to a win.
01:32And, Ed, you have $300.
01:33That's the score right now.
01:35When our time ran out, both of you feel like getting right to it and see who is the winner
01:38of this game?
01:39All right.
01:40Ed and Mary will be finishing this game in just a moment.
01:42But first, we have these messages.
01:44Let's get to the record.
01:52My perm?
01:54Okay, players.
01:55In just a moment, we'll resume our game.
01:56But for people who are watching the first time, let me once again go over the rules of
02:00the Joker's Wild.
02:01You players, of course, pull those levers in front of you, which activate our category
02:05wheels, make them spin.
02:06Now, if the players come up with three different categories, like this, they answer one question
02:11correctly on any of the categories, and they score $50.
02:14If they come up with a pair and a single, like this, a correct answer on the single gets
02:18$50.
02:18A correct answer on the pair gets $100.
02:21If our players make a triple, like this, all they have to do is answer one question on
02:25that category correctly, and they score $150.
02:29Now, the name of the game is the Joker's Wild, and the Joker's are on the wheel, and they are
02:32wild.
02:33So players, as you know, you can use them to make any combination you like.
02:36First player to score $500 or more in proper turn wins the game, keeps the money, and plays
02:41a bonus round for some lovely gifts.
02:43One other thing.
02:43If at any time you get three Jokers like that, you automatically win the game regardless
02:48of what the score is, you win it right then and there.
02:51Now, as a continuation of yesterday's game, we'll be using the same categories.
02:55The categories we're using are Wild West, Ornithology, Rock Groups, Women's Lib, and
03:00Democrats.
03:01Once again, the score 300 for Ed, who was our current champion, against Mary's 450, who
03:05was the contender.
03:06And as our game ended, it was your turn to go, Ed, with your $300.
03:10We ask you now to spin the wheels, and we wish you both good luck.
03:16Women's Libs, Democrats, Rock Groups.
03:20Three different categories.
03:21You're going to have your choice of any of the three for $50.
03:23Which will it be?
03:24Rock Groups.
03:25Rock Groups for $50.
03:28Gimme Shelter is a movie dealing with a concert tour of what rock group?
03:33The Rolling Stones.
03:34Right.
03:34You go to $350.
03:38As you know, you have to get the 500 to win, and you're very close to it.
03:42You're at $450, Mary, trying to take the champion's crown away.
03:45Spin them, and good luck to you.
03:50Ornithology, Joker, Democrats.
03:52As you know, any one correct answer would give you a victory, because all you need is $500.
03:57How do you play it?
03:58Well, I'm going to use my Joker and go off the board again.
04:01You're allowed to go off the board, if you don't like the categories, which you don't,
04:04and pick one of the five categories in use.
04:06Which do you pick?
04:06Wild West.
04:07You want the Wild West.
04:09Yes.
04:09If you answer this correctly, you will have $500, and you will become our new champion.
04:16Here is the question.
04:17Tell us the name of the New York newspaper editor, who is credited with advising,
04:21go West, young man, go West.
04:24Horace Greeley.
04:25You're right.
04:26You're the new champion for $500.
04:33There you have it.
04:34$500, Mary.
04:36You're the new champion.
04:37And in just a moment, I'll give you an opportunity to spin the wheels on our bonus game for some
04:42lovely prizes.
04:43We have a lot of things to give away to you, Ed.
04:46But first, if we're not winning this game, we have some lovely prizes anyway.
04:50Would you tell us, Johnny, about the prizes he gets anyway right now?
04:53Right, Jack.
04:54Jack, a new electric wok from West Bend, this modern-day version of the ancient Oriental
04:57cooking vessel is great for frying, simmering, and stewing.
05:00And for dessert, we also have for you delicious Villanee Ready Crust.
05:04Your dessert will seem like it came from the pastry chef.
05:06Ready Crust, a special treat, just Villanee's.
05:09Well, if that's not enough, and I'm sure you have a lovely girlfriend who's a new son of
05:15those, as you know, as we warned you yesterday, if you go ahead and play, and you do take a
05:19risk, because you do lose the $550 that you had won on yesterday's game, but you do take
05:25home the three prizes you won yesterday.
05:27A color television set, which is worth $500.
05:30We have a vacuum cleaner, which I'm sure you can use for your bachelor apartment, for
05:34$283 and a $25 gift certificate, about $808 worth of prizes altogether.
05:39You've been a lovely champion, although a very quick one, and I know everybody joins
05:43me in saying goodbye to Ed Hackney.
05:45Goodbye, Ed.
05:49I'd like to point out, at this time, about our Joker's jackpot.
05:54We started our Joker's jackpot with $2,500.
05:56The rule of the game is, if somebody loses after they've been the champion, the money we
06:00take back from them goes into the jackpot.
06:03So, we add the $550 to the $2,500, and we have now, in our Joker's jackpot, $3,050, if
06:11my calculations are correct, and that'll go to any player who wins four games in a row.
06:16All right, Mary, now it's time for you to play our bonus game.
06:20As you know, you get two spins.
06:22If you don't like what you see in the first spin, you spin again.
06:25We have prizes on the wheel, not categories.
06:27If you, the second spin, of course, whatever comes up there, you have to take.
06:30Now, we have prizes ranging anywhere from $10 or $20 all the way up to hundreds and hundreds
06:35of dollars.
06:35One other thing, some of the prizes have circles around them, like that color TV set.
06:40If you should get three prizes, all of which have circles around them, not only will you
06:45get the prizes, but you will get another handsome gift.
06:49Here it is, Johnny, tell her about it.
06:53Chevelle Malibu Coupe fits more families, more budgets, and more garages.
06:56This is the popular mid-sized Chevelle from Chevrolet, building a better way to see the
07:00USA.
07:04I'm sure if you can get three prizes with three circles around them.
07:08All right, Mary, you get two spins, remember.
07:10Spin number one coming up.
07:12Give them a good whirl.
07:13Good luck.
07:16The Whirlpool bath.
07:17A dinette set.
07:19And a couple of cases of coffee.
07:22You want this?
07:23Or do you want to spin again?
07:25I'll spin again.
07:26You want to spin again?
07:27You understand?
07:30You understand those prizes are gone.
07:32Whatever comes up next are yours.
07:34Okay?
07:35Here we go.
07:35Spin them again.
07:39Whirlpool bath.
07:40Refrigerator freezer.
07:41And frozen food.
07:43All those three are yours.
07:45Johnny Davis, will you tell her a little bit about the prizes she's won?
07:48A Jacuzzi Whirlpool bath.
07:51You'll love the refreshing feeling of gentle, luxurious water massage in your own home with
07:54your Jacuzzi Whirlpool bath.
07:56Relax and enjoy it.
07:57From Gibson, a Foodmaster refrigerator freezer featuring picture frame doors, cantilever shelves,
08:03custom interior rollers, and Gibson's exclusive frost clear system in both the refrigerator
08:07and freezer sections.
08:08Now, Kellogg's say good evening with two cases of these tasty frozen snacks.
08:1316 for package, choice of shrimp, lobster, chicken, pizza, sausage, and pepperoni filling.
08:19There you have it.
08:22All right, Mary.
08:23You won those three lovely prizes.
08:25You have $500 in the game, and now you have a big decision to make.
08:28You can quit right now.
08:29Take $500 home and take those three prizes home.
08:31They're worth about $850.
08:33Or you can go on and play another game.
08:35But if you go on and play another game, and if you lose, you lose the $500.
08:39You do keep your prizes, however.
08:41Let me give you a little incentive, however.
08:43If you go on and play and win four games in a row, not only will you keep all the
08:47money
08:47you accumulate and all the prizes that you get, because you keep spinning those wheels
08:50after every game you win, but you will, after four successful games, take home our jackpot,
08:56which right now stands at $3,050.
09:01What is your decision going to be?
09:02Do you quit now with the prizes and money or meet another player?
09:06I want to stay.
09:07Thank you, Mark.
09:08I want to stay.
09:09I want to stay.
09:10Okay.
09:12In just a moment, we'll find out who the next player is, but first, we have these messages.
09:26Mary Sprouse is our champion, and in just a moment, we'll find out whether she can retain
09:29her championship as we introduce the next challenger.
09:33Johnny?
09:33Jack, he's a writer out of El Paso, Texas, and his name is Sid Crown.
09:41Welcome to the show at the bar, Sid.
09:44Glad to have you here.
09:45Always nice to have a writer.
09:46Have you been writing anything currently?
09:47A lot more than people have been reading, Jack.
09:50Well, I'm sure that you write as well as you look so handsome, but I'm sure you'll sell
09:56many, many of your stories.
09:58Sid and Mary, in this next game, here are the categories which we'll be using.
10:02We'll be playing with animals, Shakespeare, femme fatales, movie monsters, and chess.
10:09Champion always goes first.
10:10That would be you, Mary.
10:11Remember, you have to get the $500 or more in profit turn to win the game.
10:14And if you will, spin the wheels.
10:19You've got Shakespeare, Joker, Joker.
10:23Ooh, how are you going to play that?
10:25As you know, you can have a triple on Shakespeare if you like.
10:27I'll take Shakespeare for $150.
10:30Sure, all the way.
10:31Shakespeare for $150.
10:33Shakespeare described a mischievous and merry, fawn-faced fellow as a wanderer of the night.
10:39Name this delightful fairy-type character who appears in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
10:45Puck.
10:45Right, for $150.
10:50And you are off to a flying start.
10:52Sid Brown, this is your first spin.
10:54Good luck to you.
10:55Let's see what the wheels have in store.
10:59Movie monsters, animals, animals.
11:02Now, you can play a pair of animals.
11:03One question will get you $100 if it's right.
11:05Movie monsters is only a $50 question.
11:08I'll take the animals for $100.
11:10$100 on animals.
11:12This aquatic mammal derives its name from the Greek words meaning river horse.
11:19For $50, what is it?
11:21A hippopotamus.
11:22Right, for $50.
11:26$100, it's worth it right there.
11:27For $100, score $150 or $100.
11:29Right back to you, Mary.
11:30Spin them if you will.
11:34Animals, movie monsters, movie monsters.
11:38How do you play it?
11:42I'll take movie monsters for $100.
11:44All right.
11:44Here's the question.
11:46Charles Edward Pratt achieved stardom in the early 30s when cast in the role of the monster
11:50in the original version of Frankenstein.
11:53For $100 more, by what more popular name do we know this English actor?
11:59Boris Karloff.
12:00Right.
12:00You go to $150.
12:03All right, Sid.
12:04Your turn is spin if you will.
12:09Movie monsters.
12:10Animals.
12:11Shakespeare.
12:12Movie monsters for $50.
12:14It's a $50 question.
12:15Three different categories.
12:16James R. Ness played a monster found frozen in the polar ice in what famous Howard Hawks
12:22motion picture?
12:23The Thing.
12:24The Thing is right.
12:25You go to $150.
12:26$150.
12:27$150.
12:27$150.
12:28Right back to Mary where I know he's classed.
12:33Chess.
12:34Joker.
12:36Chess.
12:37Now what do you do?
12:38I'll take a chess for $150.
12:40Chess for $150.
12:42You go all the way with you.
12:43You get you up to $400.
12:44One chess man is restricted to diagonal moves only.
12:49For $150, name it.
12:52Bishop.
12:53Right.
12:53You're at $400.
12:56We're very close to going out once again.
12:59All right Sid, spin them if you will.
13:03Shakespeare.
13:04Movie monsters.
13:06Animals.
13:07Movie monsters.
13:08$50 because it's a single once again.
13:11The latest craze in movie monsters is not in the weird, bizarre category, but rather found
13:16in the everyday things and creatures around us.
13:18In keeping with this, what were Socrates and Ben?
13:25Rats.
13:25Yes.
13:26For $200 in total.
13:28For now, $400 to $200.
13:31Mary, you could conceivably go out.
13:33Go over $500 and please remember, Sid has one final turn.
13:37Spin them if you will.
13:40Movie monsters, femme fatale, Joker.
13:44Now, what do you do?
13:45I'll take femme fatales for $100.
13:47If you answer correctly, you will have $500, which is all you need, but you remember that
13:52Sid does get a final turn.
13:54Here is your question.
13:55She is known as the beauty whose face launched a thousand ships.
14:00For $500, name her.
14:02Helena Troy.
14:03Right for $500.
14:05$500.
14:06$500.
14:09All right, you're very close to a second victory with this one exception.
14:13Sid, you have $200.
14:15Under our scoring system, there is only one way you could still win the game.
14:19That is, if you come up with three jokers.
14:23As you know, three jokers automatically gives you a victory.
14:25Otherwise, there's no possible way for you to win.
14:27So, with your heart in your mouth and a trembling hand, give it one last spin.
14:36The game is over, and the champion is Mary Sprouse.
14:39Congratulations, Mary.
14:43Stay right there, Sid.
14:44Stay there.
14:45Stay right there, Sid.
14:46I have something for you.
14:48Indeed.
14:49Mary Sprouse has won another $500, and she is now winning her second game.
14:53She is winning $1,000, and in a moment, Mary, we'll give you a chance to spin those prize
14:59wheels once again.
15:00But, Sid, you don't go home empty-handed at all.
15:01We do have some prizes for you.
15:04Johnny, would you tell us about them?
15:05Right, Jack.
15:06It's Charm Glowette, the completely portable gas grill that goes anywhere.
15:09Camping, beach, patio, or poolside.
15:11Instant flame without stutter fluids or charcoal.
15:13Charm Glow products, Antioch, Illinois.
15:16And to add those outdoor gatherings, an assortment of party-time cocktail mixes.
15:19Party-time is tops in quality, tops in variety, and now everyone can make a perfect drink
15:24every time.
15:25There you are, Sid.
15:27I know everybody here is trying to be saying, I'm sorry you couldn't even more, but thanks
15:31for being with you.
15:31Come on, Sid Brown.
15:32Thanks for being with you.
15:35All right, Mary.
15:37You have yourself $1,000 in winnings, and as you know, you have a chance now to spin the
15:41wheel once again, two times.
15:43Now we don't have categories up there.
15:45We have prizes ranging in value from $20, $30, $40, up to hundreds of dollars.
15:49You want to take spin number one?
15:51Go ahead.
15:52Here comes spin number one.
15:53Let's see what you get.
15:55Air conditioner, soup, piano.
16:04Hold it one second, audience.
16:06Those three are yours right now in addition to everything else, or you can spin once more.
16:10If you do, these prizes are gone.
16:12What do you want to do?
16:13Three, four, three, four, I'll keep it.
16:17You want?
16:17She's going to take it.
16:19Those three prizes are yours, Johnny.
16:21Tell her a little bit about the lovely prizes she's won.
16:23Right, Jack, from Frederick, a portable room air conditioner for quiet, dependable, big-capacity
16:27cool.
16:28Your Frederick works right when you get it, works right when you use it.
16:32And two cases of Lipton Onion Soup, combining fresh-tasting onions with blended seasonings,
16:37great for tips, sauces, and burgers.
16:39Steaks and roasts come alive with Lipton Onion Soup.
16:42And a Kimball Spinach, combining big-quality cone with Kimball-style cabinetry.
16:47Fashion is selected, how it's been professionally crafted in every detail from the Kimball Piano
16:51and Organ Company.
16:52There you are.
16:53Lovely prizes all.
16:54And all of you will come back and find out whether our champion is going to quit or continue
16:58playing.
16:58But first, we have these medals.
17:10I like it.
17:13All right, Mary, now you are faced with a decision.
17:15You've won twice in a row.
17:17You have $1,000 in cash.
17:18You have almost $2,000 in prizes.
17:21And as you know, if you go on, you take a risk.
17:24Because if you go on, and if you should lose to the next player, the $1,000 that you have
17:29won so far will be taken from you and will be put into our jackpot, the Joker's jackpot.
17:34However, if you do stay on, and if you do win two more games, that's all you need is two
17:39more.
17:40You have two already.
17:41Not only will you keep all the money you've won and all the prizes that you're winning,
17:44but in addition, you will break the Joker's jackpot, which now stands at $3,050.
17:50And that money will be yours.
17:52Think about it very carefully.
17:54Do you want to quit now with your money and prizes, or do you want to take a risk and
17:58play on it?
18:01I think I'll keep playing.
18:03You've got to keep playing.
18:09As they said in 76, that's the spirit.
18:12All right.
18:12In order to play another game, we have to have another player.
18:15So, Johnny Jacobs, would you tell us who that would be, please?
18:17Jack, he hails from a Rancis Pass, Texas partner, and his name is Tex Crenshaw.
18:29Howdy, Tex.
18:31Hi.
18:31What's the name of that town you come from?
18:34A Rancis Pass.
18:36Tex.
18:37Tex.
18:38And you lived a ranch life out there for a while?
18:42No.
18:43Part of the time, part of the time I was here and there.
18:46It's just a little bitty place.
18:48You blink your eyes, you miss it, you know.
18:50We're glad to have you with us, Tex, here on the program.
18:52And you're going to take on a very, very tough champion there.
18:55Mary Sprouse has won two games.
18:57This is her third.
18:58And in this game, here are the categories which we'll be using.
19:01We will be playing with fashions, the Bible, detectives, nursery rhymes, and Republicans.
19:08How does that grab you, Tex?
19:10I dig that action.
19:16All right.
19:18Champion always goes first in our game.
19:20Good luck to you, Mary Sprouse.
19:21Spin the wheels, if you will.
19:26Joker, detectives, passion.
19:29Want to make a pair or substitute a category?
19:31No, I'll take detectives for $100.
19:33$100 at stake, and here's the question.
19:35Gilbert Keith Chesterton wrote many short stories featuring a priest who more or less
19:40moonlighted as a detective.
19:41For $100, name him.
19:43Father Brown.
19:44Right.
19:44You've got $100 going in.
19:47Tex Franshaw.
19:49Ellen from Texas is up.
19:50All right, Tex.
19:50Get in one of those Texas worlds.
19:55Republican, the Bible, and a joker.
19:58As you know, you can make a pair on the Bible, a pair on Republicans, or go into another category.
20:03I'll take the Republican for $100.
