00:00Hello everyone, this is Brad Wardell from Stardoc and I'm giving you a brief video demo of what the very
00:05beginning of Elemental looks like.
00:08Elemental is a PC strategy game coming out later in summer and what you're seeing here is the beta.
00:14Now when people ask me how is Elemental different from other strategy games, well the main thing I tell them
00:19is that it's a lot more personalized from experience.
00:22Where I mean literally you design your own character and on turn one, which is where we are right now,
00:28you're right in the game.
00:31Literally, with the character you design both visually and in terms of what equipment and spell points and all that
00:36good stuff.
00:37Now what I want to do here is that this is more of a gamers demo, I'm not editing this,
00:43I'm just going to crank it out here so you guys can see how the game mechanics of this work.
00:48And I'm going to try to be as quick as I can so that we're not sitting here looking at
00:52this guy standing around too long.
00:53The first thing is that in most strategy games you want to build a city as quickly as possible.
00:58In Elemental that's not quite the case because these guys around here are non-player characters.
01:04If you ever play D&D or any RPG you know what NPCs are.
01:09Every turn these guys get more expensive because you're competing with other kingdoms for their services.
01:16So if I'm spending time building up my city, I'm not spending time going out and recruiting these guys.
01:22So I can walk over here and if I mouse over I can see she's a merchant, that's what the
01:28little card on the right does, tells me.
01:31She produces two Gildar which is the game's currency per turn.
01:35Over here we have a Loremaster, she produces spell points, that's very handy because you can't get spell points until
01:41much later normally.
01:42And V, he's a scholar, he produces research per turn.
01:47So it's pretty tempting all the way around because spells are very important to get because magic is something that's
01:58quite powerful in this game.
01:59And over here is our Loremaster, a lot of Loremasters in this particular sandbox.
02:05I'm going to try to get this guy though, so I'm going to literally walk across here, come over here,
02:13talk to him, and get on the shirt, come on over.
02:19So now I'm going to have research next turn which makes me very happy.
02:23And then I'm going to walk over here because there's an equipment cache.
02:34And there's a shield.
02:37Shields are very good.
02:38Oh, and now that I have V and I'm getting two spell points or research points per turn, I can
02:44research technology.
02:45Now in Elemental, there isn't a technology tree in the classic sense, rather you have five categories.
02:51I put research points towards each category.
02:54And at the end of that, I make a breakthrough in which I can choose a technology at the end
02:58of that.
02:59Which technologies show up though is somewhat random, where they're color coded down here, green, yellow, and red.
03:04Green means you're definitely going to be able to choose amongst them.
03:07Yellow means you probably will.
03:10Red will mean that it probably won't.
03:13And then we have what we call gray text, which are ones that are so rare that you only see
03:18them once every several games.
03:20So I'm going to go ahead.
03:21I'm going to go with Warfare because I want to get some equipment as soon as possible.
03:26So I'm going to walk, now, I just got a shield.
03:28So that's very good for my guy.
03:30So I'm going to click on him, come over to Armor, and have him get a shield.
03:35Now you may have noticed, there you go, there's one thing also that's different from your typical strategy game,
03:40especially in an age of cross-platform where everything is going for consoles,
03:44is that my guy actually does change based on what I pick.
03:49So now I'm going to go ahead and build a city.
03:52I'll call it Frogland, to keep with the spirit of my guy.
03:57Now, first of all, you may have noticed the land looks like crap,
04:02because the land has been totally decimated through a war that occurred just before I showed up,
04:08and 100 years before, anyway.
04:10And so I can sacrifice my essence in order to bring back life.
04:16Now, that's a big deal, because the more essence I have, the more powerful the spells I can have.
04:22But it's a necessary, it is a necessary sacrifice.
04:27So there it is, there's my population of two, which is, not counting me, V, and this guy here in
04:35my city.
04:36So now that the land is green and lush and there's a city, people will start coming in.
04:40So it's not that people are born, it's rather people are attracted to my city.
04:44So now that, I'm still on the arm, I just have a shield, so it doesn't really do me much
04:48good.
04:49So, but I will in warfare, I'll have in two turns, I'll be able to start doing something about that.
04:55So I'm going to come over to my city, and click on what can I build.
04:58Now up here, let me explain a little bit about the interface.
05:01I have at the top what resources I have.
05:03Over here is what, my population too, what turn I am on.
05:08My mini-map, which shows the world, this is a tiny map.
05:12This tells me what terrain my mouse is currently over.
05:16So, you know, what land, or if there's a defensive bonus, or what have you.
05:20This is to hear Gemini on.
05:21If I click on this, it brings up, basically, our in-game encyclopedia.
05:26This is something that Galactic Civilizations didn't have.
05:30We've got some criticism, which I agree with them on, and so we're addressing that here.
05:34On the left side, we have the Empire Tree.
05:36If you're familiar with the Sins of the Solar Empire, you know what an Empire Tree is.
05:39It allows me to easily go through and select all of my key units, and eventually all my towns, which
05:46right now I only have one.
05:48On the right side, my various events show up.
05:50So I'm not deluged with dialogue, saying, hey, you got this, and you got that.
05:55We want to keep it clean.
05:56So, like, here I got, this is where V got picked, and then I built a, everything I've done shows
06:03up there, and I can click on it to make it go away.
06:05And it'll fade away on its own after a while.
06:08So I want to go over here and see what I can do about, I see some, anytime I see
06:16something sparkly, it gets me excited.
06:19So, all right, back to here.
06:21I want to build a workshop because a workshop provides materials, and I need materials to build almost everything else.
06:27So I'll go ahead and do that.
06:31And there we go.
06:36And I'm going to hit the turn button.
06:39Oh, by the way, the NPCs are all driven by their own AI.
06:43Sometimes they may fight, they may go on their own quests, and they may take your goody huts from you.
06:48So I'm going to need to, well, first of all, I'm going to, since she produces money, I'm going to
06:53go ahead and bribe her.
06:55So come on over.
06:57So now she's my unit.
06:59You go back over here.
07:01While I check out this skeleton.
07:06Ah, and there's a rusty sword.
07:08That makes you really happy because now I'm armed.
07:11So I'm going to click on my guy again.
07:13And now he's a sword, see?
07:16So that is outstanding.
07:18Now there's a spider down here.
07:21He has three attack, three defense.
07:23I've got six attack, one defense.
07:26Ah, that's a little close.
07:28She has, we might be, she and I together might be able to take him out.
07:32But then again, I'm risking a specialist, which I'd rather not do.
07:36I'd rather recruit some sort of champion.
07:39I mean, you know, fighting champion.
07:45So let's see.
07:46This land over here, beehives.
07:50So if I build here, I can get some extra food.
07:52Let's go back to my, my city is ready for me to build more on it.
07:55See, it's lit up.
07:57So now I'm going to build a command pulse, which will let me start building troops.
08:06And, oh, that's right.
08:08Did I get equipment?
08:10What did I pick?
08:13I did.
08:15Okay.
08:18So that means I should be able to, oh, I can't train yet.
08:23I will send, oh, I can come back here and get a little tougher.
08:28Maybe I can take out that spider.
08:31Hang on.
08:32Okay.
08:33I've come back to my city here.
08:34And I've got, I made a party, went ahead and made a party with her.
08:38And I'm going to go ahead and go shopping.
08:39I still got a decent amount of, oh, not enough though.
08:44We'll come back.
08:45Yeah, yeah.
08:45We'll come back to you in a minute.
08:46And let's see.
08:49There's some more goodies up here.
08:51So we're going to come up over here.
08:54One of the nice things, by the way, about the city is that it affects, the bigger you make your
08:59city, the shape of it does matter.
09:01So, like, I try to make my cities almost act like a roadway because it only takes one turn across
09:07your city no matter how many tiles it uses.
09:09And that's on purpose so that there is some, that the shape of your city isn't just cosmetic.
09:17Okay.
09:17Healing nectar.
09:18I don't really need that right now.
09:23So we'll be back in just a moment.
09:25Okay.
09:26I'm back.
09:28Fancy turning on and off my editing thing.
09:30So I just got equipment.
09:31And now I'm going to go to the shop.
09:33I should have some better stuff.
09:34So I'm shopping for, I can shop for Alexandra or Leandra here.
09:39And I'm going to go ahead and get, still nothing great, but I can get a soldier's cloak.
09:46I think I have enough money for two of them.
09:51So I purchased two.
09:53So if I click on Alexander here and look at items, you can see I've got two of them.
09:59One of them I'm going to go ahead and equip.
10:01So he now has a cloak, see?
10:04And the other one I'm going to give to her.
10:08So now when I click on her, I go to her items here.
10:14Let's see.
10:15Oh, it doesn't look like I gave it to her.
10:23I don't know if I, oh, I don't think I can do it within a party.
10:26How ironic.
10:28Or maybe I can.
10:29Oh, I guess I can.
10:30I take it back.
10:31Okay.
10:33So now I can come over here, select that.
10:35And now we're both a little bit tougher.
10:38So I'm going to come over here and deal with that fighter.
10:44Or that, I'm sorry, that's spider.
10:46So we'll be right back.
10:47Okay.
10:48So now we're at that spider.
10:50Ten attack, three defense.
10:51I'm pretty sure we can take this little spider here.
10:55So here we go.
10:57Oop, he's attacking us.
11:02And I killed the massive spider.
11:04I'm a brave guy.
11:05So that is just our brief demo of the first ten or so turns of the game.
11:11If I go over here, I can start a quest.
11:13And I have more NPCs.
11:15And of course, I'm building up my cities.
11:17And meanwhile, I haven't even touched on designing units, getting some spells.
11:22That's right, only spell points.
11:25Diplomatic relations.
11:26My kingdom report.
11:28Building up my dynasty.
11:29In fact, I'm going to go over here and I'm going to ask her to marry me after this great
11:34battle.
11:36Yay!
11:37She's my...
11:37Now I'm married.
11:39So if I go back and look at my dynasty.
11:41Ooh, just in time.
11:45I'm going to go and attack the mom of that spider.
11:51All right.
11:53And I went up a level.
11:54So that's good.
11:55Now I can...
11:56I'm going to increase my moves up to a point.
11:59And...
12:00Ah, so I've went up a level there.
12:02You can see my dynasty.
12:05Lee J. Deary.
12:07Now that I've married her, I should probably know how to pronounce her name.
12:11And I'm going to send her home so that we can start having heirs to my massive kingdom of 12
12:17people.
12:17So that's it.
12:18I hope you've enjoyed what you've seen.
12:20At the very beginning of Elemental,
12:21the beta,
12:23the new next beta is scheduled to hit.
12:24Lee J. Deary.
