00:30I was the first cartoon company to add sound to their cartoons
00:32If we go back before cartoons, you know, could talk
00:35Music pretty much drove them forwards
00:37The turning point was for the Silly Symphonies
00:40When they started adding music and timing the animations
00:43The music
00:46For us as sound designers and musicians
00:48That's such a wealth of inspiration to draw from
01:01In this specific game, music is very, very important
01:04Because story is so important
01:05Story and music go very hand in hand
01:07It's just another layer on top of everything
01:11That builds emotion and builds connection to the game
01:13It is part of the atmosphere
01:15It is part of the experience that we want you to have
01:18I auditioned like dozens and dozens of composers
01:21And said, what is the Disney sound?
01:25What does it mean? Is it orchestration?
01:27Is it a musical style? I mean, what is it?
01:30Jim Dooley, he immediately got what I was trying to get at
01:34I mean, that Disney style
01:35He was able to describe it in ways that I almost understood
01:38And he was able to capture it
01:43Jim Dooley did an incredible job
01:46Of bringing in the concepts of classic Disney
01:50But, you know, making the tone slightly off-center
01:54This is by far the best music I've ever had in a game
01:58There are moments where he raises you to heights of emotion
02:03That are just incredible
02:04I mean, there's stuff in here that will bring you to tears
02:06I promise
02:18I asked Jim to create a Mickey theme and an Oswald theme
02:22The thing is, it had to be flexible
02:25Because in a game, you change the music based on what the player does
02:29So he needed to create a theme that was incredibly flexible
02:34Frankly, more flexible than I thought was possible
02:39The changes that we have in the music
02:40From the ambient scoring that goes on when you're just exploring a world
02:44To the combat music that kicks in
02:46To the little bits of music that you get from the rides and riding them themselves
02:50Have all catered to changing that atmosphere
02:53And kind of poking at the emotions of the player
02:56We use the music to tell the player what Mickey is feeling
02:59So if he's in a sad mood, the music's going to be sad
03:02If he's happy or feeling triumphant about something
03:04You know, we don't say triumph on the screen like that
03:07We play it with music
03:09So we have our character themes
03:11And then on top of that
03:12We needed themes that would be applicable to each land
03:15Each land you visit has its own unique sound
03:18The music is awesome at capturing the environment
03:22And the feel of the space
03:24So Lonesome Manor has kind of this eerie, dark, haunting tone that goes on
03:31Again, it's a mash-up
03:32Everything in the game is about taking things that shouldn't belong together
03:35And putting them together
03:43The range of emotions in the score is stunning
03:47It's not about an adrenaline rush
03:50It's not about frowning
03:52You know, being really intense
03:54It really has become a game about smiling as you play
