00:08Hi, my name's Sefton Hill, Game Director on Batman Arkham Asylum.
00:12Today I'll be demoing one of the Challenge Mode maps to give you just a small taster of the invisible
00:16Predator gameplay in Batman.
00:18Let's start with looking at what is Predator gameplay.
00:23Deep inside Arkham Asylum, Batman is faced with insurmountable odds.
00:26The place is full of Joker's henchmen shipped him from Blackgate, and they're armed and ready for him.
00:32And as we all know, Batman is not superhuman.
00:34They know you're coming, but they don't know where or how.
00:38So Predator gameplay is all about using Batman's advantages, his intelligence, his agility, his gadgets, and his ability to plan
00:45and prepare before striking.
00:50So here we have Joker's henchmen all grouped tightly together, and I need to figure out a way to break
00:54them up and get them moving around the level.
00:56What's that supposed to mean?
00:58So I'll drop down here behind this weak wall and use my explosive gel to set a trap.
01:03If I can explode the gel and use the debris from the wall to knock out the henchmen behind it.
01:08If I can move up here around the vantage points around the top of the room, I look back down
01:13at where I laid the charge before,
01:15and then detonate the charge and incapacitate the henchmen behind the wall.
01:20And what you can see immediately happen is the thugs dynamically react to this.
01:25So the first thug that gets to the down body calls over his buddies, and they set up a perimeter.
01:34And what we're going to see here is an example of the dynamic gameplay.
01:38They're going to start searching for me around the room.
01:40I don't know where I am, but I could be anywhere.
01:43There are no set patrol paths for the thugs, and every time you play the game it's different.
01:47So even me demoing the game for you, I have no idea what's going to happen.
01:59I'm using detective mode to hunt down isolated henchmen.
02:02And one good strategic tip here is that it's much easier for the henchmen to jump down than it is
02:07for them to climb up.
02:08So if you see this henchman on the upper walkway here, he's managed to lose himself from the other guys,
02:13and I can pick him off without any of the other henchmen being able to get to me quick enough
02:17before I can make my escape.
02:23So I'm just checking out where the other henchmen are to make sure there's room enough for me to take
02:27him down.
02:28And I'll use the batarang here to knock him down.
02:30I'm going to go for a headshot because the headshot's going to stun him for longer.
02:34But after I've hit him, I still need to go down there and finish the job after incapacitating him.
02:38So I'll glide down, drop on him, and perform a ground takedown.
02:43And then quickly grapple up to a gargoyle to make my escape.
02:48Now I've managed to take this guy down without attracting any attention.
02:55But Joker's fitted all of his thugs with these suicide collars.
03:02Joker's using these to identify when I knock out any of these thugs so he can direct the other thugs
03:07to them.
03:08So you can see the other thugs have been attracted up to the body, and there's one calling out for
03:11the other thugs to establish a perimeter around it.
03:18Now what I'm actually playing here is the challenge mode.
03:21And the challenge mode has a number of specific takedowns that you need to try and achieve.
03:26Two of those takedowns were a batarang takedown and using the debris from a wall.
03:31You can see the white bats under the time signifying the fact that I've already done those two takedowns.
03:36I have a third takedown to do, which is a silent takedown.
03:40So hiding under these grates, you can see the camera stays up outside the grate and allows me to track
03:44people moving up above.
03:46And I'm going to use this to takedown this thug here, just a quick look around there to make sure
03:50no one else is around.
03:51And as he moves past, I just come up behind him and take him down silently.
03:56Hmm?
03:57Hmm?
03:59Hmm?
04:06So up till now, you've seen I've been quite patient with the different takedowns I've used.
04:10But you can be more aggressive, that's totally your choice.
04:13Let's try a more aggressive takedown here.
04:15There's a few less of them around, so I can be a little bit more confident in the different tactics
04:19I'll use.
04:20So I'll try a glide takedown here on this guy, who's responding to the ground takedown that I've done there.
04:25So he's on his way there.
04:26You can see the bat icon above his head, it signifies he's in range for the glide kick.
04:30I'll just check no one else is around, and then I can drop down, knock him to the ground.
04:37That'll only stun him for a while, so I need to move up and finish him off.
04:41And then again, grapple back, up and out, because that's a very noisy takedown, the glide kick.
04:45It's going to attract people very quickly to it.
04:47So it is a dangerous tactic to use, but it's also a very effective tactic to use.
04:54So now we're down to just a couple of henchmen left.
04:57And when they realise that, you'll see their behaviour starts to change as well, as they become more and more
05:02terrified.
05:03So again, Joker's ordering his henchmen around, but you'll see that they start to become more and more nervous to
05:09follow his orders.
05:10The henchman there's gone up, but the second henchman isn't so keen to follow behind him.
05:15And this, again, is not something that's always predictable, but the way their behaviour changes as you play through,
05:19means you constantly have to adapt your tactics.
05:32So as they get more and more terrified, the thugs lose their discipline.
05:36This does make them harder to track down, because they move back and forward.
05:39But let's see what happens when I drop right in on him here.
05:41I can still use all the combat tactics in the main game and finish him off with a nice combo
05:45takedown.
05:47And again, the noise from this is going to attract another thug.
05:49But even on the ground level, Batman can use cover.
05:52So using this corner cover here, from Batarung the Thug, he doesn't even know I'm there,
05:56and then go round and finish him off.
06:01So I hope you enjoyed this brief look at just a few of the Invisible Predator features in Batman Arkham
