00:08My name's Denby Grace
00:09And I'm going to walk you through today's demonstration
00:13Anyway, we don't have much time
00:14So we're going to jump right in
00:15Here we are in a diner in Empire Bay
00:18This guy in front of us is Vito Skeletta
00:21He's the main protagonist in Mafia 2
00:22He's the player character
00:24You know, our game has an epic story
00:26And it spans 10 years of Vito's life
00:29From where we are today in February 1945
00:32All the way to the mid-1950s
00:34Now Vito is an Italian-American immigrant
00:37He's from a very poor upbringing
00:40And this very poor upbringing is what drives this guy
00:43To sort of like be pushed to a world of organised crime
00:48So where we are right now in the demonstration
00:50Is we're halfway through a mission
00:52Now we're going to go take the scenic route
00:54On the way to that mission
00:55So I can give you a few more details
00:57About the location where this game actually takes place
01:00So the city that the game is based in
01:03Is called Empire Bay
01:04It's a fictional US city
01:05But it has its inspiration
01:07And real US cities from the era
01:08And it's roughly 10 square miles in size
01:11And features some 20 diverse different neighbourhoods
01:16That's about double the size of the city of Lost Heaven
01:19From Mafia 1
01:21The neighbourhood we're driving through right now
01:22Is a place called Sand Island
01:24It's a poor, run-down, desolate area
01:26And if we were down in some of the more wealthier part of town
01:29Such as downtown area
01:30We'd see a very different picture indeed
01:32Things like shops, restaurants
01:34All these different things that you'd expect to see
01:37As you would in any real city
01:40So the other thing that you're probably recognising
01:42And seeing right now
01:43That you've not seen before
01:44In any of the Mafia 2 gameplay footage
01:46Is obviously
01:46The first part of the game
01:48As I said it's February 1945
01:49It's played against this winter backdrop
01:51Now whilst the winter looks very cool
01:54It also feeds into our narrative very well
01:56The start of the game is a pretty bleak time for Vito
01:59He's just returned from the war in Europe
02:01As I've already said he's penniless
02:03And actually he's injured
02:04You know like I said it's bleak you know
02:06And small details like this throughout the game
02:08Sort of play in and strengthen our narrative
02:11Now as well as the winter been very cold
02:13And looking very nice
02:14And playing into this narrative
02:15It also has gameplay implications as well
02:18You know
02:19Our driver here is doing a very good job
02:21Of keeping the car on the road
02:22But as you can see you know
02:23Sliding these 40s vehicles around
02:25In these icy conditions
02:26Is really fun and exciting thing to do
02:28And it's these small details
02:30That really make Empire Bay come alive
02:31You know it's the war propaganda on the billboards
02:34It's the clothing that people are wearing
02:36It's these authentic 1940s vehicles
02:38That you can see driving around today
02:40All of these small details
02:41Really make Empire Bay come alive
02:43And be this key character in the game
02:46Almost as key as say Vito or Joe
02:48The leading characters in our game actually are
02:51Anyway
02:51At this point we're making good progress
02:53Towards this mission's actually going to take place
02:55So I fill you in in a bit of background
02:58And a bit of context
02:59So you know what the hell's actually going on
03:00At this point in the Mafia 2 main story
03:02Vito's a nobody as far as the mob's concerned
03:05You know he's just a hired gun
03:06He's not a made man or anything like that
03:09So Vito's actually been hired
03:10To perform a hit on a guy called the Fat Man
03:12Now the Fat Man
03:13He runs a distillery here up on the left
03:17And the Fat Man is running this distillery
03:19On Mafia turf
03:20He's repeatedly been asked to pay his protection money
03:23But he's blatantly refusing
03:25So everyone knows what Mafia folklore dictates
03:28That eventually
03:29If you refuse to pay your protection money
03:30Someone like Vito will come around and ask for it
03:33And invariably the results are never pretty
03:35So Vito's making his way up these stairs here
03:39To this apartment to meet up with his accomplices
03:41Henry and Joe
03:42Now Henry and Joe have sort of arranged for an ambush
03:45To take place so they can lie and wait for the Fat Man
03:49I'm going to shut up now
03:50And let you see how this all plays out
03:51As it gets quite noisy now
