00:01What should have been a colourful display of spring flowers has instead become a symbol
00:07of frustration for a Bristol community group.
00:11In St George Park, around 70 volunteers came together to plant more than 30,000 bulbs in
00:19an event organised by the Friends of St George Park.
00:23The group had raised more than £6,000 to fund the bulbs, including through local fundraising
00:30efforts.
00:31Families took part, with children helping to sort and plant, and the day ending with what
00:37organisers described as a shared sense of achievement and anticipation for the blooms to come.
00:43However, less than four days later, the planted areas were mowed by Bristol City Council's
00:50park department, damaging and lightly destroying the bulbs.
00:55Resident, including local volunteer Victoria Bromley, described the incident as causing
01:01great distress to those involved, particularly given the scale of the effort and the involvement
01:07of young children.
01:08Clouds Hill Avenue resident Victoria said, my four-year-old daughter had a fantastic time
01:15with her friends sorting the bulbs and filling the holes.
01:18With a huge effort, nearly all the green bulbs were planted in a few hours.
01:24The planting had been organised over several months and, according to organisers, coordinated
01:30with the council in advance.
01:32In response, Bristol City Council has issued an apology with Deputy Leader Councillor Heather
01:38Mack, saying the situation should not have happened, and acknowledging the value of the community's
01:46work.
01:47The council says it will pay for replacement bulbs and support future planting events.
01:53It's also said it's investigating how the error occurred, and has identified a need to
01:59improve communication between teams.
02:03As part of that, the authority says it's moving towards an online system for allocating work
02:08to grounds maintenance staff.
02:10The Friends of St George Park say they welcome the apology and funding commitment, and hope
02:16the situation leads to improvements in how parks are managed for nature across the city.
02:21While the loss of bulbs is a setback, the group say the response from the community has shown
02:28strong support for local green spaces and the role volunteers play in maintaining them.
02:34Bristol City Council says officers are continuing to investigate the incident and will liaise directly
02:42with ward councillors and volunteers to address concerns and prevent similar mistakes in the
02:48future.
02:49The Friends group say community support has been incredibly encouraging following the incident.
02:57the fact that dramatic need were no more of an intervention from the field of conflict.
02:57As I wanted to listen to people wom z Liuzko, they may only go as well as an employee do

02:57Let's get started.
