00:05on the ground on the ground
00:11guys don't know they're starting through yeah roger
00:30we appear ever closer to a full-scale war with russia
00:36but are our forces battle ready
00:43with russia testing nato's resolve all along its eastern borders
00:48we have exclusive access to the war games testing our defenses against a
00:52russian attack tonight
01:00nato soldiers are challenged to race across europe to support the front line
01:05obviously the plan is leaving the zero six hundred
01:12and we're on estonia's vulnerable border with russia
01:17as soldiers showcase their military might to deter putin
01:23it's been tough it's certainly been a real test of character
01:27a lot of the borders with russia are vulnerable and that's why we tested
01:32we're with the british cooks feeding the frontline soldiers we've met about one
01:37and a half thousand people within this week so the hours do rack up like the other night
01:41i did 25 hours straight and we're in the skies right on russia's border
01:49with the pilots keeping watch the fighters that are being controlled right now we can see beyond
01:55what the fighters can see with their radar
02:02as forces across europe
02:07mobilize their troops
02:11we are behind the scenes on land
02:14at sea and in the air with the men and women training to be our first line of defense
02:24protecting our borders
02:29and stopping putin
02:34from expanding his war in europe
02:54this is the very edge of europe
02:59of the united states
03:00sharing over 180 miles of border with russia
03:04estonia is where western military chiefs believe vladimir putin
03:08could attack next if he succeeds in ukraine
03:14so right now we are approximately 10 meters from russian territory
03:23staring directly at the russian threat border guards like peter moran are the west's eyes and ears
03:30they are the first line of defense
03:38so as you can see there's the estonian border marker the russian border marker and the border line
03:47is uh between those two border markers
03:53situation has become but a lot more tense and we are you know fully expecting that something will happen
04:03maybe a military invasion from russia
04:07before dawn this morning president putin unleashed a full-scale invasion
04:12not since the end of the second world war has europe seen a darker day
04:18that was february 2022
04:21the moment russia stormed through ukrainian border posts
04:25now countries bordering russia their history is about to repeat itself
04:32a fear exacerbated recently by russian fighter jets brazenly violating estonian airspace
04:40this is where it's feared things could suddenly explode
04:45and right on cue a russian border guard appears
04:49reminding peter just how close danger lies
04:53yeah i think we should uh be more discreet
05:01peter and all the defense forces here know that they won't be able to hold off a russian invasion
05:06alone but fortunately for estonia they are not alone
05:15unlike ukraine estonia has been a member of nato
05:19the world's largest military alliance since 2004
05:24when russian forces seized crimea in 2014
05:29nato stationed soldiers from across the world here
05:34we saw what transpired in ukraine and we need to be prepared for further incursions or further moves
05:42from russia into other nato territory
05:46putin wants to achieve his aims he wants to get the territory that he believes is rightly his
05:53and we need to be prepared for that we are surging our presence in all of those bordering
06:00countries with russia this threat is very real and we have to take it seriously moving forward
06:11nato calls their permanent deployment here enhanced forward presence battle groups
06:17supporting all of estonia's land air and sea defenses
06:24in europe since 2017 the nato battle group here in estonia has been led by britain
06:31which has around 1300 soldiers permanently based here
06:37the deputy supreme commander of all nato forces in europe at the time when these forward land forces
06:43battle groups were created was general richard shereff
06:49the enhanced forward battle groups they were put there as a sort of tripwire force from any
06:55objective military judgment russia is not going to be deterred by a thousand allied soldiers
07:01from a military perspective they might pause from a political perspective because they would
07:08put it would know that if he attacked estonia he's at war with nato
07:16get the good up here
07:21nato's estonian base sits just 90 miles from the border with russia
07:28the soldiers stationed here trained throughout the year
07:32in conditions which mirror that which they're likely to experience if facing an invading russian army
07:42we're going to start clearing to the right side to the driver six
07:45roger we're out here in estonia as part of the forward land forces battle group and we're out on
07:52the training area alongside our polish estonian american and french colleagues
08:03in the event of a russian invasion these infantry soldiers know that fighting will take place in
08:09networks of trenches just like this
08:25and we're out here in the end of a seven-day exercise deep in the forests of northern estonia
08:32practicing how to storm and clear trench corridors meter by meter
08:38what we are seeing today in the modern battlefield is that the trenches have not
08:44disappeared anywhere they're still there they're still valid if you want to protect yourself you
08:49kind of have to dig in a platoon company of around 30 soldiers methodically make their way through one
08:57of the trench networks that could soon litter this entire border area just as they've scarred the front
09:04line in ukraine it looks like something from the first world war
09:14but trench combat is a massive part of the conflict in ukraine
09:22the donbass region alone has over 250 miles of front line marked by fortified trenches
09:32it's a brutal oppressive and protractive form of combat
09:39but it's something these nato troops must be prepared for
09:46this is about getting your infantry with the bayonet in to kill the enemy in exactly the same way the
09:51romans did
09:53it's as brutal as that it's still a war in which men have to fight brutally face to face this
10:01is total
10:01war a war of absolute utmost brutality warfare on a scale not seen in europe since 1945
10:11we're out here understanding the ground understanding how the conditions are in these baltic states if
10:18anything wants to happen not just understanding surviving in these conditions if something did
10:23happen we are ready and the conditions are set for us to go despite the british-led presence here
10:31at sea nato simply does not have enough troops stationed in estonia to hold off russia
10:40major military reinforcements from across the alliance are going to need to arrive fast
10:44if russian president vladimir putin were to launch another invasion i would imagine it might be at
10:52least a couple of weeks before any external forces that got up into estonia depending on the amount of
11:00warning we had if you're in estonia you could be two weeks without any additional reinforcements
11:09and this is why throughout 2025 nato has been testing its brand new allied reaction force a rapidly
11:18deployable major land army able to respond to crises within days anywhere in europe and show moscow that
11:25aggression against any member state will meet an immediate heavy response
11:36coming up
11:37start it up we're with the british army mechanics keeping nato's new allied reaction force on the move
11:46come on it's your time to shine and this is estonian warship part passing seven three two
11:54a major escalation in tensions between nato and russia on the baltic sea alter your force to 105 immediately
12:12in the shadow of mount vesuvius in southern italy sits one of the world's top military sites
12:21it's the nato headquarters for allied operations the epicenter of the west's defense against all military threats to europe
12:36welcome to joint force command naples
12:46so this is the slightly longer way to work but it's like a right turn right turn right turn
12:53now we're going to make the next step to the operational command where we're going to go into
12:57joint force command naples which is the operational command for nato south
13:03a great opportunity to look into the headquarters and see what it actually looks like from the inside
13:10meet commander carl harwood 36 years in the navy he plays a key role in nato's military deterrence
13:18across europe heading the media ops team the headquarters is about 950 people
13:27from about 25 of the 32 nato nations and of the 950 around about 100 bricks
13:37to enter this building requires high level security clearance cameras are rarely allowed inside
13:48since the war in ukraine headquarters like this one have overseen a significant increase in the number
13:55and scale of military exercises nato runs
13:59in regions right up against the alliance's border with russia
14:05so this floor is logistics so we talk about that big machine that move people machines
14:13armor ammunition food so they they sustain and maintain that that um that fleet of personnel
14:20that fleet of vehicles in order to support those operations
14:23at the heart of jfc naples are the ops centers highly secure command hubs manned 24 7.
14:33the largest military exercise of this year called steadfast dart
14:38is being run from inside these safe bunkers so this is where we talk about crisis management the
14:44uh sodana room so the showcase exercise is exercise steadfast dart so it's the biggest exercise for the nato alliance
14:54for 2025.
14:58steadfast dart is an exercise designed to test just how fast an army of thousands of reinforcements
15:04can get across europe to support frontline soldiers on nato's eastern borders
15:1010 000 troops 1 500 fighting vehicles 2 000 miles to cover a land and sea force big enough to
15:19send a strong
15:20deterrence message to putin this is not for fun it's a race against time every minute crucial to defending europe
15:34we had the british contingent headed up by the yorks so they're based in york transiting across to
15:41the ports across to netherlands through germany at the same time with vehicles loaded down at marchwood
15:46and we had the strategic roll-on roll-off ferries going around transiting through the mediterranean
15:52into greece where they're offloaded the starting gun for steadfast dart has been fired
16:07first stop is this greek port the british army is arriving from southampton to face the challenge
16:14of offloading hundreds of fighting vehicles at speed something they'll have to do for real if putin
16:20attacks a nato country
16:26boss i want to say attack is it um anything up there already yeah my name is sergeant paul heath
16:35at the moment we had 256 vehicles and different variants of vehicles plus um three containers that
16:42is coming out
16:46uh my role is to ensure that uh the kit that's coming off on the cargo gets off safely enough
16:51um and with um out any damage or anything like that i've gone now 34 years it will be military
17:00yes i start serving the queen her majesty and um from then so i've been doing military service since then
17:07uh these british army vehicles are rolling off the ship as part of the first ever deployment of nato's
17:14new allied reaction force
17:20steadfast dart is challenging this new high readiness force to deploy to the eastern fronts of europe
17:25in support of countries bordering russia within 10 days or fewer
17:32in command of these land forces for this first major trial are the british
17:40the allied reaction force is designed to respond to crisis on behalf of nato
17:45we've sent hundreds of vehicles and troops all the way across europe 2 000 miles driving from germany
17:52into romania we've sent thousands of troops in by air uh hundreds of vehicles by ship into both germany
17:59and here in greece are really demonstrating our capability to go exactly where nato needs us at very
18:05short notice
18:08with the kit finally off the ship it's time for the vehicles to get a proper once over
18:14waiting in the wings the royal electrical and mechanical engineers
18:20their job check over every engine in a matter of hours as they would have to do in a real
18:26war
18:29morning corporal classper meet craftsman peters she's an army vehicle mechanic
18:37it's her first deployment and her job is to make sure all these vehicles are battle ready
18:44the team's got just 24 hours to inspect all 256 warfighter machines that rolled off the ship
18:51it's a race against the clock can they pull it off
18:57the guys have been doing their first parade on the vehicles to make sure that everything is good
19:01and the vehicles are prepped and ready for the road
19:05there have been a few issues with the trucks where the trans oil has been overflow and we've been
19:10draining that oil and making sure that it's at the correct level
19:14starting up
19:20craftsman peter's job is a vital part of a war fighting army
19:27so if there's not enough air pressure which is here then you'll hear a beeping soul
19:37she's checking these heavy transporters as well as the lightweight protected foxhound
19:44and more heavily armored mastiff patrol vehicles
19:49leave it running come here switch
19:55and she needs to fix any faults fast here on the side of the port without having a garage full
20:01of
20:01high-tech equipment at her disposal
20:06being a vehicle mechanic it's hard work and a lot of dedication towards it because
20:14we are us like the vehicles the basically stay non-task worthy
20:24we're looking to see the level of the trans oil at the moment to make sure it's not overflow
20:30so once he revved up the engine a bit he get it warm all the circulation of the oil will
20:35go
20:35through and then we'll check the um level of the oil to make sure it's not overflow
20:43oh peteers yeah grab the master switch put it in fact it's done
20:47i think it's on yeah it's on
20:55so we probably might need a breaker bar got it got it i wouldn't say i think i would have
21:04end up as
21:04an army mechanic but i always wanted a job where i can wear a uniform
21:1017 years ago i was probably running around thinking that i'm gonna be accounting in some bank and
21:19walking in heels and all that bits but it never happened right we'll go and start her up do the
21:26gearbox check again starting up
21:32my stepfather is a vehicle mechanic my dad is also a vehicle mechanic my dad he hasn't trust me since
21:39he doesn't believe i'm actually a vehicle mechanic to be fair just let him know what he's got
21:44and then potentially just stick that two liters straight into sordi's truck
21:50it's the basics of what we do in the army though some of those vehicle checks are things that we
21:55will be doing wherever we are in whatever part of the world we need to make sure that our capability
21:59is ready for whatever eventuality we could be rolling into the war in ukraine has demonstrated
22:06the criticality of logistics and sustainment of the force
22:13testing how fast troops and firepower can reach the front line to reinforce national defenses
22:19it's what exercise steadfast dart is all about it's not just training it's preparing for war
22:28they are going to need reinforcement really quickly and it's a simple equation the readier you are
22:36the less time they're going to have to hold on the less ready that thin line is going to crack
22:42pretty
22:46quickly coming up we go inside the cockpit of nato's state-of-the-art intelligence-gathering
22:53aircraft nato zero six perfect takeoff and we can clean for takeoff perfect
23:03and can a makeshift kitchen in a freezing tent feed 400 famished fighters
23:10my oven is literally just a metal box with the door on it so yeah literally 400 out of that
23:15it's hard
23:16going it's not
23:26we're on the road with the british army
23:30right so obviously the plan is leaving the 0600
23:35hauling troops and tons of war fighting kicked thousands of miles across europe
23:43it's certainly the largest deployment in the nato context and certainly from the british army in the
23:47last 20 years with over 1500 vehicles deploying from the uk and over 10 000 personnel
23:56this is nato's biggest war game of 2025 exercise steadfast dart
24:04the mission to test if this was a real war how quickly nato's new allied reaction force can reach
24:12and support frontline troops in the event of a russian attack
24:17steadfast start is a very important proof of concept for that deployment of troops and equipment
24:22to the eastern flank a 2 000 mile journey to the eastern borders of europe requires a series of pit
24:31stops to rest and refuel today the british are arriving at their final transit camp still 100 miles from
24:48their destination
24:49this is camp konstanta a former soviet red army barracks
24:55over a thousand british soldiers have passed through this camp in the last week
24:59they eat sleep and move on in a matter of hours
25:06i don't care if your friends are in other rooms okay you're just going to go into them two rooms
25:09because the building's nearly clean to hand over tomorrow scoff tonight is a meat feast with
25:13like chips burgers there's loads of stuff going on turn around follow me we'll go that way we'll go to
25:18the accommodation
25:23meet sergeant hayes in charge of camp konstanta
25:28it's known as a convoy support center or csc
25:34the purpose of the cscs is to give the soldiers the amount of rest before they deploy they've been
25:39driving a long way to fix any of their vehicle problems they've got uh allow them to uh to eat
25:45okay so one of the main things we do here would be feed them so the cookhouse is uh just
25:49behind
25:51the biggest thing for them to do now is they are an enforced rest cool finding find a bed space
25:57both bed spaces we'll top up up in here we got the old question can we leave camp can we
26:02go and
26:02do this on the other but most of the time it was no you're here to rest you've got you
26:06know you're
26:06going on exercise tomorrow you're going to do more driving it didn't sit well with some people but
26:10most people just understood understood what they what they were meant to do
26:15it's not just shut-eye the troops need at camps like this keeping them fueled with hot grub is a
26:21mission all of its own this is the cookhouse this is where the soldiers got their meals they had
26:26they had two meals with us so they had dinner and breakfast so we've got the got a chef of
26:33action
26:33here so we got corporal spencer on the burgers uh we've got private goodacre over there and then you
26:40got corporal brooks corporal brooks is the head chef this is corporal brooks army chef extraordinaire
26:47with 23 years service well we've fed about one and a half thousand people within this week so we've
26:55literally gone through uh probably about two ton of potatoes um gone through about 2 000 burgers
27:04hot dogs probably about the same today corporal brooks has just four hours
27:10to rustle up dinner for several hundred freshly arrived soldiers
27:16and he's got to have it on the table for 6 p.m sharp so the troops can rack up
27:21the rest they need
27:22to hit the road again at first light so today we're doing some uh breaded prawns for the guys dinner
27:30tonight
27:30so we're literally just panning in it from the prawns into the floor into the eggs into the breadcrumbs
27:38it is the same um an army can't move on its empty stomach so yeah so
27:44the morale is low they come in they get a nice hot scarf they come in the mood straight up
27:49again
27:52corporal brooks has multiple different dishes to cook and hundreds of soldiers to feed
27:57all with just a single gas stove which also heats his only oven
28:04my oven is literally just a metal box with the door on it um so literally you're in and out
28:10that oven
28:11every couple of minutes so literally i've got two number five cook sets which is designed for 50
28:16uh 50 people per per cook set so we've only got two um so yeah literally 400 out of that
28:22it's hard going it's long
28:28the hours do rack up like the other night i did 25 hours straight uh that's called the spence as
28:34well he done 20 20 hours the other night so it depends on the mission you know if if you
28:40need
28:40to be in you'll have to be in because it's literally just you
28:45hey guys you can have two burgers this chicken prawns and there's one choice right
28:53with the troops filing in for dinner it's mission accomplished for corporal brooks and his chefs
29:01corporal brooks has been unbelievable fillets and prawns some nights uh some of the stuff he's made
29:07in literally two little cook sets over there in a small oven he'd uh he put gordon ramsay to shame
29:13honestly wouldn't you brooks here it's only mitchell and star only in there isn't it yeah
29:23in a war situation transit camps like this serve a vital purpose ensuring troops en route to the
29:31front line arrive having had sufficient rest medical care and food to be in the best possible shape to
29:41fight we've got about two and a half thousand uk service personnel here all the things that you need
29:45to survive food water medical treatment but it's also the fuel for the vehicles it's the spare parts
29:52for when things break down it's the ammunition for our weapons and all of the other bits that sort of
29:56go
29:56with that while these well-fed soldiers now bed down for some kit before pushing further east
30:08our cameras are allowed inside a live operational classified briefing
30:15this one at a nato airfield in northern germany
30:19circling counterclockwise over to baltic back here 25 knots as an average
30:25listening in the crew of one of nato's most important intelligence gathering assets
30:31there might be some more laws on hf uh frequencies especially during the night
30:39meet the awax nato's flying radar station providing surveillance command control and communication
30:48capabilities across allied countries
30:54from 30 000 feet the awax's giant spinning radar dome allows nato to watch an area the size of poland
31:03tracking 300 targets at once
31:08nato zero six paper takeoff here open to stand by okay we're ready last time yes that's fine
31:20perfect
31:20perfect
31:25each plane can monitor troop movements from up to 500 kilometers away
31:44the awax serves as a flying air traffic control and battle management center
31:51today it's on a live operation keeping a close watch on russian activity
31:57in the baltic sea russia's long been suspected of damaging and destroying vital infrastructure cables
32:03deep underwater and that's what today's mission is all about
32:09if you would have said like half year ago like oh we're going to sabotage all that internet cables or
32:16whatever everybody would have said ah you're crazy that's not going to happen but it is actually
32:21happening that somebody thinks it's a good action to lower an anchor and plow through the cables
32:28i mean all of a sudden it's a reality and we have to do our job not to prevent that
32:35the moment the crew spots a suspicious ship
32:38they're straight on the radio calling in the local navy and air force to check it out
32:46what we are trying to do is first detect if there are vessels of interest
32:50are they performing any suspicious behavior
32:53the ship going from port a to port b and that starts loitering somewhere in the specific area
32:59why would you do that huh that that kind of stuff is what we're specifically looking
33:08there are warnings of a possible serious escalation between nato and russia after an aerial
33:13confrontation of the baltic sea and accusations russia violated nato's airspace
33:21the importance of these ongoing awax operations became clear when an oil tanker suspected of being
33:27part of russia's shadow fleet entered estonian territorial waters sanctioned by britain
33:34the estonian navy immediately attempted to seize the vessel
33:39this is estonian warship papa 6732
33:43this is estonian warship papa 6732
33:44your request will be denied
33:48follow my instructions alter your course to 105 immediately the russians film from the tanker's
33:58bridge as the estonians attempt to redirect the vessel to a nearby port for an inspection
34:07the ship is refusing to follow the navy's instructions
34:30this is exactly the kind of flashpoint that could easily
34:35spiral into full-scale war
34:44out of nowhere a russian su-35 fighter jet suddenly appears crossing into nato airspace
34:53its purpose it would seem is to intimidate the estonian military to back down from seizing the tanker
35:01the estonian authorities said that it violated nato airspace for close to a minute it was then
35:08escorted back to russian waters by the estonian navy
35:17russia looks to be probing nato's nerve testing whether the alliance really will stand by every member
35:24with its shadowy campaign of undersea sabotage in the baltic sea
35:32coming up steadfast dark gets serious as marines storm the beaches in a show of force
35:39right on the edge of the heavily contested black sea region
35:44dozens of ships dozens of aircraft thousands of soldiers we were able to demonstrate our capability
35:51across huge geographic spans of land
36:04today i'm heading off to mount whitney to meet the uh captain the mount whitney or the uss mount whitney
36:11has just come back from the baltic operations as a nato exercise
36:17uss mount whitney has a command and control platform controlling a whole multitude of ships
36:24and forces across the nato alliance we're with royal navy commander carl harwood
36:32and today we've been invited on board the us navy's europe-based sixth fleet command ship
36:55of the united reaction force grinds its way across europe
37:06the arf's amphibious units are running drills to see how fast they can hit the front lines from the sea
37:13as well as showcasing their naval power as a deterrent to russia
37:20one of the unique capabilities and why mount winnie is probably the most capable command and control
37:24ship in the world is because we have that capability and the ability to support both the
37:29us and nato forces here on melbourne we are just there as a command and control platform working to
37:36practice command and controlling amphibious forces and we need to be ready to go day one and so every
37:41time we do these exercises for our tactics and techniques procedures change we want to be up to date
37:46so when something happens on day one we are ready to go enter and operate together you know seamlessly
37:51uh with no problems around the mediterranean coast from naples and up into the aegean this immediate
38:01response from nato's naval forces to any russian provocation is about to be put to the ultimate test
38:13this is exercise steadfast dart from the sea nato's biggest most complex live exercise of 2025
38:26our cameras have been invited onto the spanish commanding aircraft carrier juan carlos the first
38:31to witness a trial seabourne assault and storming of an enemy-held beach firsthand
38:38if we do go to war this will be the d-day landings of the modern age
38:47on deck harrier junk jets stand by
38:53below deck marines from across the alliance are poised ready and waiting to board dozens of landing
39:01craft and zodiac rib boats from the flight deck we have multiple aircrafts so we operate seahawks we
39:10have also uh harriers on board and the harriers uh they do uh also protection uh against any threats uh
39:17more coming from from the land inside
39:22and use operation is normally the most difficult
39:25of military operation that can exist so we have to coordinate many many aspects of it like air
39:33operations and uh we also had an integration of a special ops team we had a landing force which is
39:40like the core of amphibious operations in the event of a russian invasion this type of full-scale amphibious
39:49landing could be how nato forces seek to rapidly reclaim land lost to russia
39:57the first wave of this operation
40:01hundreds of heavily armed spanish and greek marines launched to attack the shoreline
40:06on zodiac rib boats once the operation starts we we should get a lot of excitement and tension
40:19in a real war these marines are sitting ducks on the water reaching the beach en masse and at speed
40:27is their mission for this exercise they are racing the clock own the beach as fast as possible
40:35and then move inland the second assault wave follows close behind dozens of landing craft carrying arm and
40:42vehicles the marines on board are already at the wheel primed to storm the beach the moment they touch land
40:53the third wave chinook helicopters marines hanging off the back jumping directly into the sea
41:02these marines are the first boots on the ground securing the area and to make sure that the other
41:08parties following them with landing crafts and all the equipment the vehicles can arrive safely at the beach
41:16with f-16 fighter jets capable of flying 1500 miles an hour twice the speed of sound and harrier
41:25jump jets providing air support for the landing force the armored vehicles are able to touch down
41:31and roll off
41:34the landing area here is located to a greece air base and they operate the f-16 here and yeah
41:42you can hear them
41:45the sound of freedom it's nice
41:49the final wave is the most dangerous marines fast roping down from seahawk helicopters within
41:56seconds to avoid being picked off by enemy fire in a war situation both the pilots and the attacking marines
42:04are at huge risk
42:12everything went well all the personnel works perfectly
42:19there's a purpose that we do this in the south eastern flank of nato here
42:22it's a clear signal to the east that nato is ready to defend its territory the message is clear yeah
42:30don't mess with us don't mess with nato
42:35for the generals in charge of the deployment of nato's new allied reaction force on both land and sea
42:42steadfast dart is going according to plan so far
42:48we demonstrated our ability to move large quantity of forces land sea and air across vast expanses of
42:59territory soldiers supplies fuel ammunition aircraft large machinery across many different nations across
43:11many different borders proved our ability to respond quickly to a threat
43:21but with the war in ukraine grinding on
43:24no one here needs a briefing on why these exercises in this region matter
43:32all of us are trying to gauge what happens if ukraine fails russia may see weakness and opportunity and
43:42they talk openly about reclaiming estonia latvia lithuania i could imagine a scenario where they
43:50would launch an attack against nato country senior political and military figures inside nato
43:57including the secretary general now speak frankly about russia posing a credible threat
44:03to member states within a few years
44:06recent border provocations in poland romania and estonia highlight the dangers russia poses to
44:13our peace and security
44:17we assess in nato that russia could attack within five to seven years
44:21only by preparing for the worst case which is war with russia do we deter war with russia
44:29we are at a crossroads in history today this is not a moment for more talk it's time to act
44:38the one thing our history tells us is that if there is conflict in europe it will wash up on
44:45our shores
44:48we've witnessed nato stress testing its ability to hurl manpower and firepower at its borders with russia
44:57at breakneck speed as both a defense and a deterrence but exercises alone won't stop
45:05putin from probing the west's resolve ultimately more men and women may soon have to stand ready
45:15to risk everything to hold europe's front line
45:21armies have to expand to fight wars of national survival what we've got to ensure is that the armed
45:29forces of this country reflect properly the political statements about the first duty of government
45:36being to protect the country and we've got to hold our political leaders feet firmly to the fire to
45:42ensure that happens
45:48next time after almost a month on the road the british finally arrive at their frontline base
45:56and the full-scale war games begin come on six l-118 light guns lays down that suppressing fire to
46:06support the close combat elements
46:11and we join the americans defending the polish border
46:16first team comes in close these two rooms
46:21we're not at war but we're definitely not at peace
46:27we're somewhere in between
46:33and that's at the same time next week now killer whales tongue rot and a 1000 mile challenge to swim
46:40all around iceland beginning tomorrow at half past seven here on channel four where next bridgerton and
46:46the apprentice are getting their homework marked it's a brand new series of goggle box beginning in just a
46:51couple of minutes
