00:0136-year-old Wayne Coventry is looking for a partner.
00:05Wayne just wanted to be loved.
00:07But has he found the right one?
00:09Cadillia, she's got an evil streak in her, definitely.
00:13If she couldn't have Wayne, no one else could have him.
00:15Sometimes choosing a partner is the most dangerous thing we can do.
00:19He was absolutely presodic with her. He loved her to death.
00:23His devotion comes at a cost.
00:26Cordelia stabbed him in the back with a broken blight.
00:28Blood everywhere.
00:30She just smacked as if she knew what she was doing.
00:33Wayne Coventry, Cordelia Farrell, a fatal match.
00:53A bird's eye view of an ordinary town,
00:56which in 2019 saw an extraordinary love story involving a man called Wayne Coventry.
01:03A man close to his family.
01:06I was quite overprotective of Wayne.
01:10I was nine when he was born, and I loved it, having another little brother.
01:18Always got a smile on his face, like a Cheshire cat.
01:22I've never known anyone who smiled so much, to be fair.
01:25He just always had a grin on his face.
01:31He was bubbly and a normal child.
01:36He used to make us laugh a lot.
01:40Even as he grew up, he still used to make us laugh.
01:45Occasionally, the brothers overstepped the mark.
01:48I'd done something wrong when I was younger.
01:52I'd nicked loads of archery equipment.
01:54Police come out and search my mum and dad's eyes.
02:00Stolen some bows.
02:02And they did them behind the shed in the garden.
02:06Police couldn't find nothing.
02:08I'm just about to leave, and then my little brothers popped up and goes,
02:11I'd be all in the shed.
02:13And obviously, that was it.
02:16Yeah, got nicked there and then on the spot.
02:18And that's one thing that always stuck in my mind.
02:21He got away with it until he opened his mouth.
02:30As a teenager, Wayne falls for a local girl.
02:34According to older brother Sean, they have a good relationship.
02:38The first girl he went out with, he was with her for roughly 18 years.
02:44He was like a one-woman man, which was really good.
02:47When he was with someone, he was devoted to them.
02:50He was only 16, I think, when they had the first child.
02:54He ended up with three children.
02:56A girl, then a boy, and then a girl again.
02:59He did love the kids' mum to bits.
03:01Always had done.
03:02His kids meant the world to Wayne.
03:04He absolutely adored them.
03:11I lived together, and I moved down Devon together.
03:15Yeah, he moved there with his partner and his kids.
03:19Didn't see him for years after that.
03:23They were great together until, I don't know exactly what,
03:26I think they just petered out.
03:28In June 2017, the end of the relationship marks a painful turning point for Wayne
03:35as he faces the reality of leaving his children 200 miles behind.
03:42Then, obviously, when he moved back, moved up to Bronze Grove.
03:46He had his children stay with him at weekends and stuff like that.
03:49He doted on his children.
03:52His kids meant the world to him.
03:53He missed them when he weren't around them.
04:04Wayne will have been dramatically impacted by losing the family that he built up in his first relationship.
04:13This is somebody whose meaning, purpose in life, is now gone.
04:18It's somebody who now needs a strong figure, a dominant figure, somebody to lead him, give him direction.
04:26That somebody would be Cordelia, sometimes known as Delia Farrell.
04:31Wayne told me once and twice he'd been speaking with Cordelia.
04:37They lived in the same area, so they bumped into each other.
04:44He brought her up here.
04:45They had Sunday dinner and that.
04:48I mean, they're quite funny as a couple as well.
04:50My brother used to have this hot sauce that I don't know where he used to get it from,
04:54but it's the hottest thing I've ever tasted in my life.
04:56And they used to play each other up.
04:58And when they'd done them a Sunday dinner and that, my brother's come in and got it.
05:01And he squirted it into a roaster.
05:03He was like...
05:05Yeah, he seemed very happy.
05:08He just fought for that one person.
05:11And he did.
05:13He proper fell for her.
05:15There was no getting them away from each other.
05:18He absolutely fought the world over.
05:21To start with, he did introduce me to her.
05:24And we did talk.
05:28Wayne and Cordelia were mostly laughing together and enjoying each other's company.
05:32But then there was then that part of her that just was totally different.
05:41I took an instant dislike to her with her attitude and everything.
05:46She used to hide from me.
05:48I mean, locking herself in the toilet or in the bedroom just because I was there was ridiculous.
05:54I mean, I've never armed a female.
05:57She couldn't think that I'd knock her about or anything.
06:00I've never hit a female in my life.
06:02So I used to think he was stupid.
06:05Every time Wayne's father visits, we have Cordelia hiding, staying well out of the way.
06:12For me, it's as if she doesn't want to fully understand Wayne.
06:17She doesn't want to hear more about Wayne, to meet his family, because to do so would humanise Wayne.
06:24And at the moment, Wayne is just playing a particular role, a particular character within a melodrama that I think
06:32the two of them have created.
06:34Sometimes they could be excellent together.
06:36When they got on, they did get on.
06:39But then when they didn't, it was bad.
06:44Cordelia's behaviour can in part be explained by the fact that she was diagnosed with an underlying personality disorder.
06:52And the personality disorder that she got diagnosed as having was emotionally unstable personality disorder,
06:59which used to be in my day called borderline personality disorder, the borderline between neurosis and psychosis.
07:06But in layperson's terms, what that means is simply you're riding an emotional rollercoaster with somebody that has this diagnosis.
07:17They're volatile.
07:19They're self-destructive.
07:20And that's partly because they have no sense of self.
07:24And so some days they're really kind.
07:26Some days they're really pleasant to be around.
07:29And the very next day, sometimes within an hour, they can be a completely different personality because they have no
07:38fixed sense of who they are.
07:41And of course, if you're riding a rollercoaster, emotionally, some days you want to love and care.
07:49But the very next day, you might want to kill.
07:54With Cordelia knowing that Wayne was a decent chap, wanting a loving relationship, this gave Cordelia the upper hand.
08:03It gave her the opportunity to control that relationship.
08:08If he went anywhere, she'd have to know where or why.
08:11She didn't want him being around other women.
08:15Even though he weren't into other women when he was with someone, he wasn't that kind of person, Wayne wasn't.
08:19But Cordelia obviously thought he was.
08:23Wayne might not have been that type of person, but he does begin to make up stories of affairs with
08:29other women, which triggers Cordelia's jealous streak.
08:34There was a jealous streak with Cordelia as well, which is extremely worrying and surprising, really, when you think if
08:39Wayne doted on her that much, why would she be jealous?
08:42Because he's the one for her.
08:45If she didn't want him doing something, she'd stop him.
08:50It kind of paints a picture of this controlling, coercive behaviour by Cordelia.
08:55It stopped him doing a lot of things and seeing a lot of family members.
08:58Very controlling.
09:08During this time, Wayne has few pleasures in life.
09:11Wayne loved his motorbike.
09:13He loved them.
09:15Always tinkering about with cars or bikes, he was.
09:1845, he was bikes.
09:20He loved his bikes, Wayne.
09:24He loved his motorbike.
09:26He got it while he was living down Devon.
09:30Then, one day, the motorbike is stolen.
09:35So, when it's stolen, his motorbike, they dismantled it.
09:40We found it further up the road in an alleyway.
09:44Dismantled.
09:45Around this time, Luck just didn't seem to be on his side.
09:50So, we never got to ride the bike again.
09:56Those who know Cordelia and Wayne are increasingly concerned.
10:01Sometimes fuelled by drugs and alcohol, they often fight.
10:05Because, of course, drugs and alcohol are going to make them disinhibited.
10:10And some of those underlying tensions come to the surface.
10:18They'd had a number of arguments.
10:20She would wind him up on occasion.
10:22She would watch YouTube videos that starred her ex-boyfriend in there
10:26to try and get a rise from him.
10:28And almost sort of looking for a fight with him.
10:34She'd get dressed up and then say that she's going out to make blokes and that
10:37because she knew it had wind him up.
10:40I mean, she used to phone him up while having sex with other men.
10:45Just so he could hear it and everything when it would get to him.
10:50What Cordelia does, this calling him while she's having sex with other men
10:55and watching videos of ex-partners, tells me two things.
11:00One, that to Cordelia, sexual power is incredibly important.
11:07And number two, that she doesn't feel she can achieve this
11:12through normal, healthy means.
11:14Every time Cordelia carried out some kind of abuse on Wayne,
11:19the inhibitions were reduced further.
11:23Each and every act just set the scene for the next.
11:35The more you allow and permit this toxic behaviour to continue,
11:41the more normalised that toxic behaviour becomes.
11:46You forgive it.
11:47You expect it.
11:49To be in a controlling and coercive relationship for a long time
11:54normalises what is actually toxic within the relationship.
12:00And of course, if that is allowed to continue,
12:03that's very dangerous indeed.
12:06If you've tried to explain to him that you've got a wrong one,
12:11he wouldn't listen.
12:13As far as he was concerned, she was the right one.
12:16He was that posotted with her.
12:20He absolutely loved her to death.
12:23But his father, Barry, becomes increasingly concerned.
12:27Some of the things he overhears are extremely worrying.
12:31She used to threaten him a lot over the phone.
12:34I've even heard her turn around and threaten to kill him.
12:37The fact that he expects this kind of treatment,
12:40so when he receives it, it's just what he anticipates.
12:45And he blames himself to some degree,
12:48and it triggers him to seek her approval more,
12:52rather than having the effect that it should have,
12:55which is to make him immediately leave the relationship.
13:01Wayne never thought about leaving Delia.
13:04He even turned round and said,
13:06would he come and live with me?
13:08I'd got a bed in the conservatory,
13:10could have stopped in the conservatory, live with me.
13:13But no, he wanted to be with Delia.
13:17Everybody tried the hardest.
13:19Everybody tried to explain, this is bad for you.
13:21You can't keep on going through what you're going through,
13:23but he stuck with it.
13:25That time much he loved her.
13:27He used to say, look, I can't, Sean, I love her.
13:30You just can't do nothing, can you?
13:32It's increasingly clear Cordelia and Wayne
13:35are in a toxic relationship that they are both wedded to.
13:40It's quite clear that Wayne was keen to continue
13:43with the relationship with Cordelia.
13:45As she was with him,
13:47so it's very difficult to try and manage that situation
13:49when both parties don't want to leave.
13:51Having only recently separated from his partner of 18 years,
13:56Wayne doesn't want to be alone.
13:58They work together in a relationship,
14:01but in a very dysfunctional, pathological way.
14:06Most people would run for the hills
14:08when experiencing this kind of psychological abuse
14:12within an intimate relationship.
14:14Only Wayne's family know about the abuse
14:17he claims to suffer at the hands of Cordelia.
14:20In this situation, we've got a man
14:23who hasn't reported domestic abuse.
14:26And of course, there are some overlaps
14:28with why women don't report domestic abuse,
14:31fear of shame, for example.
14:33However, there are added elements
14:36when the man is the victim
14:38and the woman is the perpetrator.
14:40And of course, that relates to ideas,
14:42often outdated ideas of masculinity.
14:46By being seen as being the victim of a woman
14:50who is domestically abusing the man,
14:52the man's sense of who he is
14:55is fundamentally altered,
14:58he believes, in the eyes of our culture.
15:09In 2019, the police received a telephone call
15:12from Wayne complaining
15:14that he'd been attacked by Cordelia.
15:19She went round to his flat and that,
15:21and they were having a bit of food
15:23and a bit of drink,
15:23and then she sort of pretended
15:25that she wanted to have sex,
15:27so she put her hand down his pants.
15:30The next thing he knows
15:31is she's grabbing on his testicles,
15:33really badly pulling down on it.
15:37It was a vicious attack.
15:38He described being grabbed by the testicles
15:40and literally pulled around the room.
15:43Because of the pain and everything of that,
15:45my brother actually passed out at that stage.
15:48And the next thing he remembers
15:50is coming round with her
15:51literally trying to bite it off.
15:54She was scary when she wanted to be very.
16:05Cordelia is violent
16:07because, in her case,
16:10her underlying personality disorder
16:12doesn't give her a fixed centre
16:15that she's comfortable with.
16:17She's constantly frightened
16:19that she's going to be abandoned.
16:21And therefore,
16:22that sense of being emotionally volatile
16:25is because it comes from a place
16:28where she doesn't actually know
16:30who she is.
16:32When you look at photographs of Cordelia,
16:34it's quite clear
16:35she's a very sexual woman.
16:37And she would be very conscious
16:39of how she could use
16:40her looks
16:43in relationships
16:45as a means
16:46by which
16:47she could control
16:48her partners.
16:49Add to that
16:50her emotional volatility.
16:53That's a very
16:55dangerous combination
16:56of factors.
16:58Eventually,
16:59when he got around,
17:00he thought the police
17:01and the ambulance had turned up
17:02so he was going to open the door
17:03and that's when
17:04she stabbed him in the back
17:04with a plate as well.
17:12When the police actually arrived,
17:13what they established
17:14was that not only
17:15she had bitten him
17:16but also stabbed him
17:17in the back
17:18with some broken crockery.
17:19So this was quite serious.
17:22I mean,
17:2358 sets of teeth marks
17:24the other were all in his bits,
17:25his testicles.
17:26So at that point,
17:27Cordelia was arrested
17:28and taken into custody
17:29for questioning.
17:32She said she was defending herself
17:34from an attack from Wayne.
17:36But what was surprising
17:37was there were no injuries
17:39on Cordelia.
17:40At the conclusion
17:41of that interview,
17:42she makes a chilling statement.
17:44And one of them
17:45will end up dead.
17:51He called me from the hospital
17:52while he was in the hospital bed.
17:54You knew it was going to happen
17:55eventually,
17:56you know what I mean?
17:57She just went that far
17:59with things.
17:59It was just unbelievable.
18:02This wasn't a usual domestic dispute
18:05whereby the couples
18:06have had a row
18:07and just fallen out
18:08and raised voices.
18:09This was a particularly vicious,
18:11nasty physical assault
18:12on a man by a woman,
18:14which is unusual in itself.
18:16It was embarrassing
18:18to say that you're getting beat up
18:20and terrorized by a woman.
18:23I mean, he didn't lock
18:24sign it to me,
18:25but you could see
18:27and it was hard to watch
18:29when it was happening.
18:31When it's a male victim,
18:33often there's a deep-seated
18:34sense of shame
18:35and embarrassment
18:36at being attacked
18:38by a female perpetrator.
18:41We hardly spoke
18:43on the way back.
18:45I asked him
18:46if he wanted to come
18:47and stay at mine,
18:49but no,
18:49he wanted to go back
18:50to his own flat.
18:53So I took him back there,
18:55but he didn't say much,
18:56he didn't speak much about it.
18:59Cordelia would one day
19:00tell a court
19:00she suffered
19:01at the hands of Wayne too.
19:03He was never charged
19:04with an offence,
19:05but there's little doubt
19:07theirs is a highly volatile
19:09and toxic relationship.
19:12Having interviewed Cordelia
19:13and had her account
19:15where she is claiming
19:16that she was defending herself
19:17from an argument,
19:19the police don't have
19:20sufficient evidence
19:20to charge her
19:22and so she's released.
19:24The police need
19:25to investigate further.
19:26While they do,
19:27safeguards are put in place.
19:31Cordelia was actually
19:32under two different
19:33non-molestation orders
19:35from things that she was doing
19:36to my brother.
19:37Non-molestation orders
19:39issued by the courts
19:40protect her victim of abuse
19:42by preventing their abusers
19:44from contacting them.
19:46But Wayne and Cordelia
19:48are still seeing each other.
19:50Oh, he was at risk,
19:52but you couldn't tell him.
19:55He wouldn't listen to anybody.
19:58There was no getting him
19:59away from each other.
20:00He absolutely fought
20:01the world over.
20:02When you look at the assault
20:03that took place
20:04on Wayne by Cordelia,
20:05any normal person
20:06would step back from that
20:07and think,
20:08that's it,
20:08that's the end of the relationship,
20:10you know,
20:10I've had enough.
20:11But that didn't happen
20:12with Wayne and Cordelia.
20:16The pattern we see here
20:18is Cordelia
20:19being the one
20:20to attack Wayne.
20:22He reacts,
20:23he responds,
20:24but he's rarely proactively
20:27initiating violence.
20:32However,
20:33around this time,
20:34Wayne reveals
20:35a shocking incident
20:36to his older brother.
20:38I received a message
20:39of him saying,
20:39I don't think
20:39we need to speak.
20:42And then,
20:43all of a sudden,
20:43I was in a picture
20:45of my brother
20:45that I didn't even recognise him.
20:47He was just all black and blue.
20:52Seeing pictures of him,
20:53I couldn't stand him
20:54being beaten up like that.
20:57I wanted to get him there
20:58and keep him safe as well,
20:59so I didn't get a taxi
21:00from the hospital,
21:01which was in Birmingham
21:02all the way up there.
21:04After the mysterious beating,
21:06Wayne's family rallies around.
21:08We sort of kept lying up there,
21:10being a bigger brother and that.
21:11I just wanted to try
21:12and protect him
21:13as much as I could.
21:14In fact,
21:15Wayne is now staying
21:16with his brother,
21:17Sean,
21:17in an attempt
21:18to keep him away
21:19from Cordelia.
21:21But he can't resist her.
21:22He kept on disappearing
21:24and that,
21:25because he was staying
21:26and he was staying
21:26in a hotel
21:27with one of his mates.
21:30We put two and two together
21:31and we realised
21:31it was Cordelia.
21:34And Cordelia
21:35couldn't do anything wrong
21:36in his eyes.
21:38That's how much
21:39he thought of her
21:40and how much he loved her.
21:41He didn't want to be
21:42apart from her.
21:44Their relationship
21:46is like an addiction,
21:48something they feel
21:49they need,
21:50yet it brings them
21:52emotional
21:52and increasingly now
21:54physical pain.
21:56And it's a difficult cycle
21:58to break,
21:59growing more intense
22:01over time.
22:02And it's an addiction
22:03that is heading
22:05towards disaster.
22:17Wayne Coventry's bond
22:19to Cordelia Farrell
22:20is too strong.
22:22Despite promises
22:24to family
22:24that he would,
22:25he can't
22:26stay away.
22:28The couple
22:29are meeting
22:29in secret.
22:30They've been sleeping
22:31in the tent together.
22:32After what happened
22:33in September
22:34and all the other
22:35things that she'd
22:35done with him.
22:37When we found out
22:37that there was
22:38staying in the tent
22:39we did say to
22:40Wayne, my brother,
22:41to bring Cordelia
22:42up and stay here.
22:44Because we thought
22:44he'd be better off
22:45staying here
22:46because we could
22:46keep an eye on him.
22:47She said to my partner
22:48and myself before
22:49that she'd like to
22:50bicker with him
22:50to keep him
22:51on his toes.
22:53She used to dollop
22:54and say to him
22:55that she was going
22:55out even if she
22:56weren't going out
22:57just so she could
22:57wind him up.
23:03The one thing
23:04Cordelia needs
23:05more than anything
23:06is to feel
23:06powerful within
23:08her relationships.
23:09Wayne needs
23:11to be with
23:11somebody valuable,
23:12somebody dominant,
23:13somebody powerful,
23:14somebody significant.
23:15So the more
23:16she abuses him
23:17through this behavior
23:18the more he wants her
23:19and the more
23:20he wants her
23:20the more powerful
23:21she feels.
23:23They work together
23:24in a relationship
23:26but in a very
23:27dysfunctional,
23:28pathological way.
23:30It's a very
23:31effective relationship
23:32but one that is
23:33heading for disaster.
23:36She looked at us
23:37one day
23:38and she went
23:38my name's Dee
23:40and then she sort
23:41of turned around
23:41to him and went
23:42my name's Cordelia
23:43as if she brought
23:45two different sides
23:46to her.
23:48She's developing
23:49different strategies,
23:50different personas
23:51with different names
23:53are coming forward.
23:54When she was loving
23:54and bubbly
23:55and that,
23:56it was good
23:57but then she could
23:58just snap
24:00and then everything
24:01just went to pot.
24:02It will be evident
24:03to other people
24:04that this is somebody
24:05very changeable,
24:06unpredictable,
24:07that they don't know
24:08what they're going
24:09to get
24:09and it's because
24:10there is no
24:11stable core
24:13to Cordelia.
24:14This is somebody
24:15who is forever
24:17poised for battle,
24:19ready to be triggered.
24:24One minute
24:24she'd be fine
24:25and the next minute
24:26she'd be a totally
24:26different person.
24:27People with this
24:28personality disorder
24:30are incredibly
24:31reactive,
24:32triggerable,
24:33they are volatile
24:34emotionally.
24:35They're not able
24:36to cope with
24:37any kind of
24:39disrespect
24:39or dishonour
24:40or any kind
24:41of assumed
24:42attacks on them
24:43and who they are
24:44at all.
24:46My partner
24:47actually said
24:48to Cordelia
24:48if you're having
24:49fun to Wayne
24:49you're going to
24:49end up killing
24:50him, you are.
24:52She just smirked.
24:55Behind the closed
24:56doors of
24:57Sean's home
24:58the matters of
24:59Wayne and Cordelia
25:01are coming to a head.
25:02They got up in the
25:03morning,
25:04there was sort of
25:05bickering.
25:06Ever willing to
25:07taunt her boyfriend,
25:09Cordelia spots
25:10an opportunity.
25:11My daughter came
25:12here,
25:13she was a prison
25:13officer,
25:14so obviously she
25:15used to turn up
25:15with her prison
25:16gloves and
25:16everything like
25:17that.
25:18And Cordelia
25:18tried it on
25:19with my daughter
25:20in front of
25:20my brother
25:21to try and
25:21wind him up.
25:23She just kept
25:24on putting it
25:24on her,
25:25trying to sit
25:25on her lap,
25:26trying to flirt
25:27with her.
25:31She started
25:31doing him
25:32upstairs in
25:32the bedroom
25:34where she
25:34scratched all
25:35his face
25:35and ripped
25:36his T-shirt.
25:37I've had to
25:37run up and
25:39sort of say
25:39Wayne come
25:40down and
25:40leave it.
25:41And he'd
25:41come down
25:42and he'd
25:42sit in the
25:42living room
25:43with me.
25:43And she'd
25:44just carry on
25:44up.
25:45Just trying
25:45to get a
25:45reaction out
25:46of him.
25:48But she
25:49couldn't get
25:49a reaction
25:50out of him
25:50and I kept
25:51on pulling
25:51him away
25:51to stop
25:52it getting
25:53any further.
25:55There was
25:56a point where
25:56she kicked
25:57him down
25:57the stairs
25:58and I had
25:59to run
25:59out and see
25:59what was
26:00going on
26:00again.
26:00She turned
26:01around and
26:01said that
26:01it kicked
26:02her up
26:02the stairs
26:03but it
26:04was Wayne
26:05to come
26:05flying down
26:05the stairs.
26:08It just
26:09got worse
26:09through the
26:10day.
26:12My brother
26:12did retaliate
26:13and sliced
26:14some of
26:14her clothes
26:15was up to
26:15with her
26:15jackets
26:16that she
26:16had.
26:18Wayne's
26:18retaliation
26:19makes her
26:20behaviour
26:20worse.
26:22This is
26:22everything
26:23that she
26:23cannot bear.
26:25This is
26:25everything
26:25that she
26:26is fighting
26:26against.
26:27This sense
26:27of feeling
26:28overpowered.
26:30The move
26:31wasn't
26:32one
26:32Farrell
26:32was
26:33going
26:33to
26:33accept.
26:35My
26:36brother's
26:36coming in
26:37through the
26:37gate
26:37and my
26:3811-year-old
26:38Stoney
26:39stood in front
26:40of my
26:40brother
26:40like that
26:41as if
26:41protecting
26:42him.
26:44Even
26:44some
26:44witnessed
26:45what was
26:46going on
26:46and was
26:46obviously
26:47trying to
26:47protect
26:47his
26:47uncle
26:48Wayne.
26:49There's
26:49a few
26:50people
26:50at the
26:50house.
26:51Wayne
26:52and
26:52Cordelia
26:52go into
26:53the
26:53kitchen
26:53and
26:54an
26:54argument
26:55ensues.
27:03Standing
27:04up for
27:04himself
27:05is not
27:05what
27:06Cordelia
27:07expects
27:07of
27:08Wayne.
27:08The
27:09feeling
27:09of being
27:10challenged
27:11would have
27:11overwhelmed
27:12her,
27:13triggering
27:13every
27:14instinct
27:14to fight
27:15back.
27:16And in
27:16the heat
27:17of the
27:18confrontation
27:18in the
27:19kitchen,
27:19the most
27:20commonplace
27:21in
27:21Britain
27:22where
27:22somebody
27:22will
27:23be
27:23killed,
27:24Cordelia
27:25reacts.
27:26Roughly
27:27about
27:27seven
27:27o'clock.
27:29I had a
27:29commotion
27:30from in
27:31the living
27:31room,
27:32so I've
27:32come to
27:33the gate
27:33there and
27:34as I've
27:34got to
27:34the gate
27:35Cordelia
27:36grabbed
27:36a knife
27:37out
27:37the
27:37knife
27:37block
27:37that
27:37was
27:38on
27:38the
27:38side
27:38just
27:38there.
27:40She
27:40was
27:41stood
27:41at
27:41the
27:41cooker
27:42with
27:42the
27:42blade
27:42in
27:42her
27:42hand
27:43and
27:43it
27:43was
27:43the
27:43biggest
27:44one
27:44out
27:44the
27:44block.
27:46She
27:46was
27:46stood
27:47here
27:47with
27:47the
27:47knife
27:47behind
27:48my
27:48brother's
27:48back
27:48obviously
27:49because
27:49I've
27:50seen
27:50the
27:50knife
27:50I've
27:50shouted
27:51way.
27:52He
27:52sort
27:52of
27:52took
27:53a
27:53couple
27:53of
27:53steps
27:53forward
27:54and
27:54then
27:54it
27:54was
27:54literally
27:54as if
27:55she
27:55was
27:55waiting
27:56for him
27:56to
27:56turn
27:56round.
28:00As
28:01he's
28:01sort
28:01of
28:02turned
28:02round
28:02she's
28:03plunged
28:04the
28:04knife
28:04straight
28:05in
28:05in.
28:08My
28:09brother-in-law
28:09shouted
28:10don't pull
28:10the
28:10knife
28:11out.
28:13But
28:13she
28:13just
28:13pulled
28:14it
28:14out
28:14and
28:14smirked
28:16as if
28:16she
28:16knew
28:16what
28:17she
28:17was
28:17doing.
28:18And
28:19my
28:19son
28:19was
28:19stood
28:19right
28:20by
28:20the
28:20side
28:21of
28:21her
28:21when
28:21she
28:21done
28:21it.
28:22A
28:22little
28:2311-year-old
28:23boy.
28:27It was
28:27like my
28:27brother
28:27didn't
28:28realise
28:28what
28:28had
28:29happened
28:29at
28:29that
28:29time.
28:31So
28:31he's
28:31carried
28:32on
28:32and
28:32walked
28:32to
28:32here
28:33and
28:34then
28:34he
28:34sort
28:35of
28:35must
28:35have
28:35realised
28:36so
28:36he's
28:36turned
28:37round
28:37and
28:37just
28:38shouted
28:38Sean
28:38and
28:39that
28:39was
28:40it.
28:40sort
28:40of
28:40fell
28:4583
28:45I
28:45never
28:46understood
28:46it
28:46before
28:47but
28:47I
28:48literally
28:48was
28:49stuck
28:49I
28:49couldn't
28:49move.
28:52And
28:53then
28:53that's
28:53when
28:53I've
28:54come
28:54running
28:54in
28:54phoning
28:55999
28:56for the
28:56ambulance
28:58and the
28:58police
28:59and that
28:59and
28:59obviously
29:00I've
29:01had to
29:01get
29:01down
29:01on
29:01the
29:01floor
29:02and
29:02start
29:02counting
29:02my
29:02brother's
29:03last
29:03breath
29:04as if
29:05it was
29:05on
29:05the
29:05floor.
29:08So
29:09having
29:09stabbed
29:09Wayne
29:10Cordelia
29:11immediately
29:12flees
29:12the address
29:13and we
29:13don't
29:13know
29:13where
29:13she's
29:14gone.
29:14This
29:15leaves
29:15Wayne
29:15in a
29:15critical
29:16state
29:16in
29:17his
29:17brother's
29:17arms.
29:18She had
29:19literally
29:19dropped
29:19the knife
29:20and walked
29:20out.
29:21My
29:21brother's
29:21dying
29:22on the
29:22floor.
29:25And
29:26then
29:26obviously
29:26you've seen
29:26all the
29:27colours
29:27start
29:27to drain
29:28out.
29:31All his
29:31breathing
29:32had gone
29:32funny and
29:33I was on
29:33the phone
29:33to the
29:34ambulance
29:34and they
29:34were asking
29:35me to
29:35count
29:35his
29:35breaths
29:36and
29:36it was
29:38hard
29:38and I
29:39couldn't
29:39do it.
29:40I had
29:40to come
29:41and do
29:41it.
29:55Sean
29:56found me
29:58and says
29:59that Delia
30:00had stabbed
30:01Wayne and
30:01she'd gone.
30:09When the
30:10ambulance
30:10turned up
30:11I did
30:11run out
30:12there and
30:12try and
30:12say
30:12look
30:13he's
30:14not
30:14grieving
30:14because
30:14he had
30:15actually
30:15stopped
30:15grieving.
30:16My
30:16brother-in-law
30:17was doing
30:17CPR
30:18and that.
30:18I was
30:19on the
30:19phone
30:19for
30:21three
30:23or four
30:24hours.
30:24During
30:25that time
30:25the
30:26paramedics
30:27were there.
30:28They revived
30:28him for a
30:29couple of
30:29minutes.
30:34They kept
30:35him in
30:35here for
30:36hours and
30:36they'd done
30:36open heart
30:37surgery in
30:37the kitchen
30:38but they
30:38stated that
30:39when they
30:39got his
30:40heart out
30:40there was
30:41no blood
30:41left in
30:41his body.
30:42She had
30:43severed the
30:43main
30:43artery to
30:44his heart.
30:47Eventually
30:47when they
30:49had finished
30:49doing the
30:49work in
30:50here with
30:51Wayne
30:51they'd
30:51literally
30:52come in
30:52and
30:52pronounced
30:53him
30:53dead
30:53at the
30:54time.
30:56Heart
30:56breaking.
31:04I
31:05couldn't
31:05sleep
31:06that
31:06night
31:06after
31:06that.
31:08I
31:08was awake
31:09couldn't
31:09sleep
31:10and then
31:11the
31:12following
31:12day
31:12I
31:13come
31:13down
31:14shore
31:17but of
31:18course
31:18there
31:18was
31:18nothing
31:19I
31:19could
31:19do.
31:30all
31:30his
31:31bruising
31:32and
31:32everything
31:32that he
31:33had
31:33from the
31:34previous
31:34fight
31:35because it
31:35was only
31:35a couple
31:36of weeks
31:36before
31:38all
31:38come out
31:39on him
31:40when he
31:40was dead
31:42so
31:43it
31:44wasn't
31:45my mind
31:46at all
31:49didn't
31:49look like
31:50him
31:50at all
31:50covered
31:50in
31:51bruises
31:53for
31:53Wayne's
31:54brother
31:54and
31:54father
31:55their
31:56worst
31:56fears
31:57had
31:57become
31:57a
31:58reality
31:59she
31:59kept
32:00saying
32:00that
32:00she
32:01would
32:01murder
32:02him
32:02she
32:02even
32:02told
32:03my
32:03brother
32:03in
32:03the
32:03morning
32:04my
32:04partner's
32:05brother
32:05Wayne's
32:06dead
32:06today
32:06I'm
32:06going to
32:07kill
32:07him
32:08but
32:08you
32:08don't
32:09think
32:09nothing
32:09of
32:09that
32:10you
32:10know
32:10I
32:10mean
32:10but
32:11obviously
32:11she
32:11meant
32:12it
32:14no
32:15I
32:15never
32:15thought
32:16it
32:17would
32:17actually
32:17happen
32:18I
32:18need
32:19to
32:19protect
32:19him
32:20and I
32:22couldn't
32:22last
32:23thing
32:23he
32:23shouted
32:23with
32:24Sean
32:26I
32:32couldn't
32:32do
32:32nothing
32:36although
32:36it was
32:37a single
32:37stab
32:38wound
32:38the
32:38attack
32:39was
32:39particularly
32:40vicious
32:41requiring
32:41significant
32:42force
32:43to pierce
32:44through
32:44the chest
32:45Cordelia
32:46was clearly
32:47enraged
32:48and intended
32:49to cause
32:50harm
32:50when she
32:51picked up
32:51the knife
32:52so this
32:53has now
32:53become a
32:54murder
32:54investigation
32:55with Cordelia
32:56as the
32:57prime suspect
32:58and she's
32:59on the run
33:00is anyone
33:01else at
33:02risk
33:03scared
33:03the living
33:03day
33:04looks like
33:04my son
33:05I mean
33:05after witnessing
33:06what he
33:06witnessed
33:07watching his
33:08uncle get
33:08murdered
33:09and then
33:10dying
33:10he was
33:11worried about
33:12her coming
33:12back
33:17it's important
33:18to try and get
33:19hold of Cordelia
33:19as quickly as
33:20possible
33:20not only to
33:21ensure that
33:22she is in
33:22custody
33:23and can't
33:24cause any
33:24harm to
33:25anyone else
33:25but also
33:26she then
33:26can't cause
33:27harm to
33:27herself
33:27or destroy
33:28any further
33:29evidence
33:33they've moved
33:34me and my
33:34partner
33:34to a hotel
33:36all they
33:37obviously
33:37was forensic
33:38evidence
33:39and everything
33:39like that
33:42so the police
33:43would be doing
33:43their normal
33:44sort of
33:44inquiries
33:45of door-to-door
33:46speaking to
33:47friends and
33:47family
33:48looking at
33:49social media
33:49if she had
33:50a mobile phone
33:51then they'll
33:51be trying to
33:52track her
33:52through that
33:53and also
33:53any financial
33:54inquiries
33:55in certain
33:56locations
33:56that might
33:57help close
33:57the net
33:57and bring
33:58her into
33:58custody
34:01was Cordelia
34:02Farrell
34:03coming to
34:04terms with
34:05what she
34:05had done
34:05I think
34:06that having
34:07killed
34:08somebody that
34:09clearly she
34:10was intimately
34:11involved with
34:13will have
34:14brought her
34:14face to face
34:15with the
34:16person that
34:16she has
34:17become
34:17and she
34:18now tries
34:19to run
34:19from that
34:20she's not
34:20just running
34:21from the
34:21police
34:22she's running
34:22from the
34:23reality
34:24of what
34:25she has
34:25become
34:30if
34:31somebody
34:31doesn't
34:31want
34:31to be
34:32found
34:32then
34:33it's
34:33fairly
34:34easy
34:34to
34:35go
34:35into
34:36hiding
34:36for
34:36a
34:37considerable
34:37period
34:38of
34:38time
34:38particularly
34:39if you
34:39effectively
34:39go
34:40off the
34:40grid
34:40you know
34:41you turn
34:41off
34:41your
34:41phone
34:42you're
34:42not
34:42on
34:43social
34:43media
34:43you're
34:44not
34:44in
34:44contact
34:45with
34:45friends
34:45and
34:45family
34:46you're
34:46just
34:46hiding
34:47out
34:47somewhere
34:47throughout
34:49the
34:49midlands
34:49as pressure
34:50mounts on
34:51police to
34:51find
34:52Wayne's
34:52killer
34:52Farrell
34:53shocks
34:54detectives
34:55with her
34:55next move
34:56five days
34:57into the
34:58investigation
34:59having
35:00discovered
35:01Wayne dead
35:01at that
35:02address
35:04Cordelia
35:05surprisingly
35:06gives herself
35:07up to
35:07the police
35:11that's
35:12not
35:12unusual
35:12under
35:13the
35:13circumstances
35:13if
35:14the
35:14police
35:14have
35:14been
35:15putting
35:15a lot
35:15of
35:15pressure
35:16on
35:16friends
35:16and
35:16family
35:17who
35:17may
35:17have
35:18been
35:18in
35:18contact
35:19with
35:19Cordelia
35:21but
35:22then
35:22eventually
35:22when
35:22the
35:23phone
35:23call
35:23come
35:23through
35:23to
35:24say
35:24that
35:24she'd
35:24been
35:25got
35:25it
35:25was
35:25a
35:26relief
35:26the
35:27police
35:27still
35:28had
35:28a
35:28job
35:29to
35:29do
35:29so
35:30having
35:30given
35:31herself
35:31up
35:31police
35:32would
35:32have
35:32secured
35:33Cordelia
35:33very
35:34quickly
35:34brought
35:34her
35:35into
35:35custody
35:35and
35:36they
35:36would
35:36have
35:36forensically
35:37examined
35:37her
35:38make
35:38sure
35:39that
35:39she
35:39hasn't
35:39got
35:39any
35:40injuries
35:40herself
35:40you know
35:41was
35:42there
35:42a
35:42fight
35:42has
35:42she
35:42got
35:42any

35:43injuries
35:43that
35:44need
35:44to
35:44be
35:44recorded
35:46has
35:46she
35:46got
35:46any
35:47forensic
35:47evidence
35:48on
35:48her
35:48that
35:48would
35:48suggest
35:49she
35:49is
35:49responsible
35:50even
35:50though
35:50we've
35:50got
35:51eyewitnesses
35:51that
35:51say
35:51she
35:52was
35:52she
35:52could
35:53still
35:53argue
35:53that
35:53and
35:54so
35:54is
35:54there
35:54any
35:54forensic
35:54evidence
35:55that
35:55we
35:55need

35:56and
35:56also

37:04with
37:05well
37:05we've
37:06got
37:06Wayne
37:07dead
37:07we've
37:08got

37:09who's

37:09and
37:10we've
37:10got
37:10Cordelia
37:11who's
37:11been
37:11on
37:11the
37:11run
37:14the
37:14only
37:15assumption
37:15we can
37:15make
37:15from
37:15that
37:16is
37:16that
37:16she's
37:16murdered
37:16Wayne
37:17and
37:17she
37:17intended
37:17to
37:18kill
37:18him
37:19and
37:20so
37:20they
37:20go to
37:20the
37:20Crown
37:21Prosecution
37:21Service
37:21for
37:22an
37:22authority
37:23to
37:23charge
37:23her
37:23with
37:24murder
37:24of
37:24Wayne
37:28Cordelia
37:29opened up
37:29a plea
37:29for
37:30manslaughter
37:31as an
37:31alternative
37:32to
37:32the
37:32murder
37:35and
37:35what
37:36she's
37:36saying
37:36effectively
37:37is
37:37that
37:37she admits
37:38to
37:38being
37:38responsible
37:39for
37:39the
37:39killing
37:39of
37:40Wayne
37:40but
37:41she
37:41didn't
37:41intend
37:42to
37:42do
37:42it
37:42and
37:43she
37:43didn't
37:43intend
37:43to
37:43cause
37:44him
37:44serious
37:44harm
37:45it's
37:46it's
37:46important
37:47legal
37:47distinction
37:48murder
37:49means
37:50life
37:51manslaughter
37:52can result
37:53in much
37:53less
37:53prison
37:54time
37:54she
37:55just
37:55wanted
37:55to
37:55get
37:55away
37:56with
37:56it
37:56she
37:57knew
37:57she'd
37:57have
37:58gone
37:58guilty
37:58she'd
37:59have
37:59got
37:59longer
38:08and
38:17thought
38:18and in fact
38:18what she
38:19said was
38:19that she
38:19was defending
38:20herself
38:20because
38:21at some
38:22stage
38:22Wayne
38:22had put
38:23a knife
38:24towards
38:24her back
38:26and so
38:27she grabbed
38:27this large
38:28kitchen
38:28knife
38:28the largest
38:29knife
38:29in the
38:29block
38:30and plunged
38:31it into
38:31Wayne's
38:32chest
38:34and the
38:35police have
38:35to try
38:36and disprove
38:37that if
38:37they can
38:38it's very
38:39difficult
38:40when you've
38:40got one
38:41person's
38:41word against
38:42another
38:42or when
38:43your victim
38:44is deceased
38:44and can't
38:45speak for
38:45themselves
38:46and so
38:47you do
38:47your best
38:48to try
38:48and get
38:48corroborative
38:49evidence
38:49and the
38:50police
38:51would be
38:51relying
38:51on bad
38:52character
38:53evidence
38:53where Cordelia
38:54had this
38:55violent
38:55outburst
38:56on Wayne
38:56only a
38:57month
38:57before
38:57the
38:58murder
38:59but
39:00obviously
39:00what Cordelia
39:01is also
39:01painting a
39:01picture of
39:02is that
39:02Wayne
39:02was
39:03violent
39:03and that
39:04she was
39:04merely
39:05defending
39:05herself
39:06and so
39:07it's
39:07quite tricky
39:07for juries
39:08sometimes
39:08to try
39:09and work
39:09their way
39:10through
39:10that
39:10information
39:11and decide
39:12effectively
39:12who's
39:13telling the
39:13truth
39:13and who's
39:14not
39:15Wayne's
39:15family
39:16would be
39:16chief
39:16witnesses
39:17in her
39:17trial
39:19well
39:19when I
39:19was
39:20giving
39:20my
39:20evidence
39:20understanding
39:21I
39:21seen
39:22Cordelia
39:22in the
39:23dark
39:23she
39:23was
39:23actually
39:24smiling
39:24at me
39:24as if
39:25it was
39:25something
39:26to laugh
39:26about
39:28she's
39:28got an
39:29evil
39:29streak
39:29in her
39:30definitely
39:32the jury
39:33is given
39:34an outline
39:34of events
39:35they hear
39:36about the
39:37non-molestation
39:38orders
39:38issued
39:39against
39:39Farrell
39:40even when
39:41she done
39:41them last
39:42two fingers
39:42to him
39:43she was
39:44still under
39:44the non-molestation
39:45so she
39:45could have
39:46gone to
39:46her
39:46remand
39:53on that
39:54the moment
39:55arrives
39:56will it
39:57be murder
39:58or
39:59manslaughter
40:01Cordelia
40:02Farrell
40:03is convicted
40:03of manslaughter
40:04and sentenced
40:06to ten years
40:07for the
40:07killing
40:08of Wayne
40:08Coventry
40:09the judge
40:10instructed
40:11that she
40:11serve a
40:12minimum
40:12of seven
40:13and a half
40:14years
40:14Farrell
40:16was also
40:16given
40:16an 18
40:17month
40:18sentence
40:18for
40:19aggravated
40:20bodily
40:20harm
40:20to run
40:21concurrently
40:23I think
40:24that the
40:25manslaughter
40:25verdict
40:26was a
40:26reflection
40:27of the
40:27fact
40:28that this
40:28was
40:29a
40:29voluntary
40:30relationship
40:31that the
40:31two
40:31were
40:32part of
40:32and that
40:34there
40:34were
40:34escalating
40:36episodes
40:36of
40:37violence
40:38that
40:38continued
40:39over a
40:39period
40:40of
40:40time
40:40therefore
40:42to some
40:43extent
40:43the
40:44manslaughter
40:44emerged
40:45out of
40:46that
40:46destructive
40:48relationship
40:52It wasn't
40:53enough
40:53nowhere
40:55near
40:55enough
40:56I
40:57expected
40:57it
40:57to
40:58get
40:58at least
40:59round

40:59the

41:04I
41:05couldn't
41:05understand
41:06I
41:07don't know
41:07how someone
41:08can get
41:08away
41:08with
41:09that
41:09that
41:10just

41:11that
41:11it's

41:12you're
41:13talking
41:13about

41:39but
41:39that
41:39claim
41:40was
41:40something
41:41the jury
41:41seems
41:42to have
41:42rejected
41:44the
41:45jury
41:45dismissed
41:46any
41:47possibility
41:47that
41:47Cordelia

41:53was
