08:52It helps me
09:19So we're talking about
09:26So we're talking about
09:52We're talking about what that is
09:53We're talking about what that is
09:53We're talking about what that is
09:55We're going to make examples
09:59Because the sheriff, he wants to see people build a program that helps people to help themselves
10:16I'm in this pod for the road
10:23I'm in this pod for the road
10:38And I'm in this pod for the road
10:52And so we're talking about
10:55I'm in this pod for the road
10:59Let's be sure the first time you're on the road
10:59He's in this pod for the road
10:59I never thought that I really had an anger problem,
11:02but I guess deep down inside, I do.
11:06And I was just learning how to fix it as the days go on.
11:11It takes so much energy to be angry, to frown,
11:16and this program, this right here, it's beautiful
11:20because the sky's the limit when it comes to love.
11:24Like, I love you, bro, I don't even know you like that,
11:27but guess what, I love you.
11:28You see what I'm saying?
11:29Like, I love y'all.
11:31I just want you guys to know that.
11:33Wait, say, hey, hey, hey, hey.
11:40I've learned so much about myself and about others.
11:44We're all trying hard.
11:45We're all trying to work together and keep it going.
11:49Get over here.
11:50I don't want to fight.
11:52Like, my knuckles are already scarred,
11:53and I got scars all over myself.
11:56So I got to change for the people that love me
12:00and for the people that I love.
12:01I got to change for the people that I love.
12:04Let's get to this.
12:04Let's get to this.
12:06Let's get to this.
12:06Let's get to this.
12:08Let's get to this.
12:08Let's get to this.
12:09Let's get to this.
12:10Let's get to this.
12:12Tomorrow is the last day of the experiment,
12:15and I have staff that are still not on board with this.
12:18I have not made up my mind yet.
12:20I'm expecting the inmates to provide me the information
12:23on why this program should continue.
12:29Sorry I'm late.
12:35Today determines if this program stays or goes.
12:40So I guess it's how we reflect to him how it has changed us.
12:45It all comes down to this moment.
12:50I probably think it will continue.
12:52I mean, it's probably too much for the COs
12:54and too much for the staff.
12:58The H-100, it kind of went how I expected it to go.
13:02That pod has become incredibly disrespectful,
13:05and it doesn't really sit too well with me
13:08in a structured environment like how this is supposed to be.
13:12So I'm not overly excited, I'll say.
13:18All right, guys.
13:19I'm here today to talk about what we said
13:21we were going to talk about today.
13:22So I'm here for you guys.
13:24You tell me.
13:28Sheriff, first of all, you know,
13:30I come from a long line of being in prison
13:34and live in the segregated racial lines my whole life.
13:39We've came together as a group,
13:41and we dissolve those in this plot.
13:45You know, we all put those differences aside,
13:47and we accept one another as human beings,
13:50and we came together, and we worked together,
13:52and it worked out.
13:57Politics is something that we fought about
13:59and we'll fight about until long after I'm gone.
14:02But really, I like what they are trying to accomplish here.
14:05Any kind of positive change is commendable.
14:08So we did talk last night,
14:10and I know that a lot of us,
14:12most of us have programmed
14:13and really want this to continue.
14:15We also understand that
14:17the harder we make your officer's job,
14:19the harder it's going to be for us, you know,
14:22as far as we don't want to hold up the staff,
14:25disrespect the staff.
14:28I'm from DLC, and this pod,
14:31we get $50 a week with my compensation
14:33so I can stretch my shit out,
14:34you know what I'm saying?
14:37That's not why I came into the program.
14:39I came in to change myself and help myself
14:41and help the rest of the guys in here.
14:43So that's, I'm just letting you know,
14:45me personally, that's what I'm doing.
14:47I appreciate your candor.
14:48But thank you.
14:49Thank you so much for giving this a chance,
14:51for giving me a chance to be in the program.
14:54I've never lasted in a pod this long.
14:56in any facility.
14:56You can look at my name,
14:57it doesn't matter, you know?
14:58This is the first time in my life
14:59when I actually plan on doing better
15:00and changing,
15:01and it's thanks to this program,
15:02and I get out with actually trying
15:04to put things in place
15:05to do better when I'm out
15:06rather than put things in place
15:07just to self-destruct.
15:09That was actually my next question.
15:10For those of you that have been down before,
15:13what makes this time different?
15:15Take a look at all the men
15:17you see in front of me, sir.
15:19None of us are the same person
15:20that walked through these doors
15:21six weeks ago.
15:23See, I've been coming in
15:24out of these jails for a long time,
15:27and this is the first time
15:29I've wanted to change,
15:31you know?
15:31And I wouldn't have had
15:32that opportunity if it wasn't.
15:34Understood.
15:38Like, maybe we're all just
15:40blowing smoke up your ass
15:40to get these benefits,
15:41you know what I'm saying?
15:42Maybe that is what's going on.
15:43Maybe we're all just like,
15:44you know, saying all these things,
15:45doing all these things
15:45just so we can get these benefits
15:47and, like, get the rewards
15:48from, like, what we're putting into it,
15:49you know?
15:51But I don't think that's the case,
15:52you know what I'm saying?
15:53We're initiating our own groups out there
15:55and running them ourselves.
15:56So, like, instead of just doing, like,
15:58what you guys expect,
15:58we're going to try to go above and beyond,
16:00you know, and do our own thing,
16:01you know?
16:02It's our voice.
16:02It's what we think, you know?
16:03I think that's the biggest thing.
16:05Sir, you had something?
16:06We're going to have to go
16:07through a lot of bumps,
16:09and what we're trying to tackle here
16:10is not just for ourselves.
16:12It's for the people that come next.
16:14Here it's our mission
16:15to make the world a better place,
16:17and that's why we feel like
16:19this program has some merit to it
16:21and shouldn't stop.
16:23Good job, bro.
16:24That's good.
16:30After they presented me
16:31with their ideas,
16:32I was actually impressed
16:34that they had some grounded,
16:37realistic expectations
16:38of the program,
16:39but, of course,
16:40we've had a lot of problems
16:41over the last six weeks,
16:42and today doesn't erase all of that.
16:44So, right now,
16:45I don't know what we're going to do.
16:47Well, guys, let me go out
16:48and speak to my command staff,
16:50all right?
16:50I appreciate you guys' input.
16:52Obviously going to be input from them,
16:53and I'll be back tomorrow, guys,
16:55all right?
16:55Thank you, sir.
16:56Thank you, guys.
16:57Appreciate it.
17:01Initially,
17:02I didn't want it,
17:04but now that I see
17:05that the pod is doing well,
17:07the program as a whole,
17:08I think it's great
17:09for the community
17:10and for these guys
17:11that want change
17:12within their life.
17:14Look, we stood up as men,
17:15and we fucking went
17:16through the program,
17:17we changed our lives,
17:18you know,
17:19and we did it
17:20with honor and dignity.
17:22You follow me?
17:23I think that
17:26the staff has something
17:27to say about it.
17:29They don't want
17:29to deal with it.
17:31I think he's going
17:32to come back
17:32with good news.
17:35I mean,
17:35we did work hard.
17:36It's nice to watch
17:37the fruits of our labor pay off.
17:38Like, I hope
17:40it continues
17:40because it gives us
17:42a chance to continue
17:42to do what we're doing
17:43and continue to grow.
17:44I like to learn from you.
17:46I like to learn from everybody,
17:47so if he stops it,
17:49it's going to stop us
17:50from growing.
17:50I like to learn from you.
17:51Yeah.
17:52Fuck.
17:53I've been lost in my life
17:54for a long time
17:56in doing just things
17:57because I didn't know
17:58the direction
17:58I was going in.
18:00So, uh,
18:02for someone that has made
18:03a bunch of terrible mistakes,
18:05I'm grateful that
18:06I'm in the program
18:06and that, you know,
18:08I hope that the program
18:09continues after all this.
18:21So, basically went in
18:22and talked to the inmates
18:23and wanted them to tell me
18:25why the program
18:26should continue,
18:26but at the end of the day,
18:28I wanted to find out
18:29from you guys,
18:30was there enough positive
18:31that it outweighed
18:32the negative
18:33that happened with it?
18:35Well, it's been a long six weeks
18:36so I'm going to the end
18:37right now.
18:37It's been six weeks.
18:38We've had some ups and downs.
18:40Um, it was pretty bad
18:42at first, you know.
18:43It seems like
18:44in the last few weeks, though,
18:46you know, they came together.
18:49Yeah, I agree.
18:51They talked about
18:51the positive programming,
18:53however they can get
18:54the experience
18:55and get the life skills
18:56that they're going to need.
18:57Yeah.
18:58I mean, you would think
18:59that they would have been
19:00asking about more visitation
19:02like we gave them,
19:03you know, more commissary
19:05like we gave them,
19:06stuff like that,
19:06but if they're coming to you
19:07about the programs,
19:08then maybe
19:09if we steer it towards that,
19:11maybe it's something
19:11that really works.
19:12So we have definitely
19:14seen a change from the start.
19:15A lot of their concerns,
19:16you know,
19:17it sounded like
19:18it was, um,
19:20legitimate.
19:21Uniform staff doesn't
19:22get that a lot
19:23with those guys.
19:24They don't really
19:24open up to us
19:26with legit concerns
19:27other than that stuff
19:28that they want
19:30around here
19:30and extra stuff
19:32that they can get.
19:32so it was actually
19:33good to see.
19:34I understand
19:35we had hurdles.
19:36I understand
19:37we had hiccups.
19:38That's going to happen
19:39with an experiment
19:40when you try something new,
19:41but let's be honest,
19:42a lot of our line-level staff,
19:44they were not for this
19:45when it started.
19:46Well, you saw our faces
19:47in the first meeting
19:49when you advised us,
19:51so, you know.
19:53I mean, there's still
19:54going to be some staff
19:54that are reluctant
19:55just because they're
19:56going to see this
19:57as extra work
19:58that they didn't
19:59really ask for.
20:00Weighing the pros
20:01and cons,
20:02there were two aspects
20:02of this experiment
20:03for it to be successful.
20:05I wanted the inmates
20:06to accept more responsibility
20:08for their well-being
20:09and step up
20:10and become productive
20:10members of their neighborhood,
20:12which is now that pod.
20:13But I also don't want
20:14to burden my staff
20:15with extra work
20:16that prevents them
20:17from their primary duties
20:18of security
20:19and getting home safe.
20:20So, I appreciate the talk, guys,
20:22and I'll make a decision,
20:24and I appreciate
20:25all the input.
20:26Sure.
20:27Thanks for meeting with us.
20:28Thank you, guys.
20:37While they wait
20:38for the sheriff's decision,
20:40the inmates are trying
20:41to take advantage
20:42of the remaining time,
20:43knowing that tomorrow
20:44the experiment might be over
20:46and their privileges gone.
20:53Hey, Dad.
20:55How you doing?
20:56Good.
20:58So, when my son, William,
20:59wasn't able to make the visiting,
21:01I thought it probably
21:02would be a good thing
21:03to talk to him about it,
21:04let him know
21:04what my feelings were
21:06at the time.
21:07I got all fresh dup and stuff.
21:11Okay.
21:12That's good.
21:14I got all fresh dup.
21:20How's everything going?
21:21Were you able to make it?
21:22Nah.
21:23The thing is,
21:24I don't even have enough money.
21:26Okay, okay.
21:28Yeah, I'm broke right now.
21:30If anything,
21:30I got, like, what?
21:31Like, like, a hundred.
21:33And with an Uber,
21:34I mean, most people
21:36are not willing
21:37to go that far.
21:39I really wanted
21:40to see you, though.
21:42My son, he knows a lot.
21:45I'm glad he'll follow
21:46in my footsteps.
21:47He's a college student now.
21:49So, I'm very, very,
21:50very proud of him.
21:51I'm trying to get
21:52a virus off my computer,
21:53that's all.
21:54Oh, yeah?
21:55Oh, that stuff I fired.
21:59Wait, so, wait,
22:00when did they say
22:01you would get out?
22:04Right now,
22:04I don't know
22:05my release date.
22:06They told me
22:06that I had a 2.5,
22:082.5 to do in prison.
22:11Okay.
22:11We're just gonna fly by
22:12real quick.
22:14Even though
22:14I didn't get to see him,
22:15I was able to talk
22:16with him on the phone,
22:17and I was just letting him
22:18know that it was okay,
22:19you know what I mean?
22:20You didn't get to show up.
22:22I'm still here.
22:23You're still in my heart,
22:24and I'm still thinking
22:24about you.
22:25But it's okay, though.
22:27Okay.
22:28All right.
22:29Thank you, man.
22:29I love you.
22:30Love you, too.
22:38This will be my first visit
22:40ever, ever.
22:41All the fucking time I've done
22:42in all the county jails
22:43and all the fucking prisons
22:45in the different states.
22:46I never got a visit.
22:48But today is the day,
22:50you know?
22:53All right,
22:54so who's here to visit?
22:55All right,
22:56if you guys want to come with me,
22:57you're going to need to sign in,
22:58and then we'll meet you guys next.
23:01What do you want,
23:02all right?
23:04Murphy!
23:05Murphy!
23:06Yeah, boy!
23:08Woo-hoo!
23:09My dog right there!
23:10Love you, brother.
23:12I'm a good one, bro.
23:13Woo!
23:15All right!
23:19All right!
23:20Good job!
23:21Good job!
23:21Good job!
23:21How do you like that?
23:21Good job!
23:22Take your tissue!
23:23Take your tissue!
23:23It's a really emotional moment,
23:25and just understanding
23:26that I'm going to get the chance
23:27to see Akili and Crystal.
23:29It's really,
23:30really important to me.
23:32I'm, you know,
23:33I'm already sitting here thinking
23:35about what to say,
23:37you know?
23:39All right.
23:43Okay.
23:46Here we go.
23:47That's it.
23:49Woo!
23:50Woo!
23:55You're playing, right?
23:57It was fun.
23:58I cried in the beginning, though.
24:01You gotta give me a minute.
24:02I swear to you.
24:04I'm coming.
24:04I'm doing.
24:04I swear.
24:05She's crying.
24:08I just want to say,
24:09I'm sorry for not being there
24:10for so long, okay?
24:12You are just such an amazing
24:14young lady,
24:15just in the letters
24:16and talking to you.
24:17I'm just so fucking proud of you.
24:18You don't even understand,
24:20I am, okay?
24:22Oh, Arizona tore my life apart
24:2410 years ago, so.
24:28Hey!
24:29Hey, Stolta,
24:30how you doing?
24:32I'm all right.
24:33I had to kind of get that
24:35out of my sister.
24:36I told you you were going to cry.
24:37I told her she was going to cry.
24:39I told you.
24:39I don't even know why
24:40I fucking bothered
24:41wearing goddamn makeup.
24:44I was just really nervous,
24:46and then I didn't know.
24:48Yeah, when we were sitting
24:49in the lobby,
24:50and my stomach was, like,
24:50all turning and stuff.
24:52Keeley is an amazing young lady,
24:54and just, like,
24:56the way she carries herself,
24:58and Crystal, too,
24:59just, like I said,
25:01the willingness
25:02that they took time
25:03out of their lives
25:04for somebody
25:04that hasn't been present
25:06in it for so long,
25:08you know,
25:08shows a lot.
25:10Fuck, I don't even know
25:11what to say right now.
25:11I'm sorry.
25:13This is insane.
25:14It feels unreal, honestly.
25:18Just, you guys,
25:19I'm really sorry
25:20for being selfish
25:21and only worrying
25:22about my own needs
25:23these last 11 years,
25:25and I can't describe enough
25:27how much,
25:28how sorry I am for it,
25:29like, really.
25:30And I want you to tell
25:31your sisters that, too.
25:35I feel like he's really
25:36trying to get back
25:38in our lives
25:39no matter what,
25:40and I feel like
25:42this time he's really
25:43going to follow through
25:45with his plan, hopefully.
25:46I'm trying to do
25:47the best that I can in here
25:48to better myself each day
25:50for you guys, okay,
25:51and for myself.
25:52And I'm sorry,
25:53and I can't change anything,
25:55but I'm definitely,
25:56I can't change the past,
25:57and I'm not gonna promise
25:58anything,
25:59but I'm gonna try every day.
26:00And we'll be here
26:01rooting for you.
26:04Yes, sir, yes, sir.
26:05I love you guys.
26:06All right.
26:07I love you.
26:08Love you.
26:08Thank you for coming.
26:09Tell your sisters
26:10I love the fuck out of them,
26:11okay?
26:11I love you guys.
26:26I see my old husband.
26:35I can, I can, I can see the man
26:37that I fell in love with
26:3820 years ago
26:39starting to come back,
26:40and that's nice.
26:49I was crying.
26:52I was crying.
26:52I was crying.
26:52I was getting there
26:53waiting for it fucking
26:54didn't.
26:54I told you as soon as you
26:56walk in,
26:57break the tissue.
26:57Yeah, I know.
27:00Like, it was fucking awesome.
27:02Yeah, super happy.
27:04It is fucking life-changing
27:06having that human connection
27:08with people in your family
27:10that you love.
27:11I really appreciate being
27:12a part of this program
27:13and getting me in contact
27:14with my kids.
27:16I'm not the same person
27:17that I was four months ago.
27:19I can't change the past,
27:21you know,
27:21and I can't promise tomorrow,
27:23but, but I can work on today.
27:25And this is only the beginning.
27:27If I can do this in six weeks,
27:29you know,
27:29what can I do in six years?
27:31How bad did you cry, though?
27:33I'm about to cry.
27:34Like, it was just amazing.
27:35It was fucking awesome.
27:35You're crying right now?
27:36No, I'm not.
27:37I'm fine.
27:38I love it.
27:45While waiting to hear
27:47the final verdict
27:48from the sheriff,
27:49the pod decides
27:50to come together
27:50for what might be
27:51the last time.
27:53We gotta put all that
27:54fucking black, white,
27:55Mexican bullshit aside
27:56and just fucking
27:56dig in and eat.
27:57And I'm with it.
27:58Like, I'm not against it.
28:02Political rules,
28:03they're set in stone
28:04in some of these
28:05higher, you know,
28:07custody institutions
28:07or prison
28:08or anything like that.
28:09But us making a difference
28:11here in the people
28:13that are behind us's lives
28:14is what I'm focusing on.
28:17What I'd like to do
28:18is throw a spread
28:19and we're taking
28:20all the race cards
28:21out of it, okay?
28:22And we're gonna have
28:24food on the table.
28:25We're doing it now.
28:26We're just taking
28:27a collection
28:27and then we're gonna
28:28cook in a tub
28:29and then we're gonna
28:30put it out there.
28:31I'm gonna go put
28:32something there right now.
28:33Hey, hey,
28:34if you can get out
28:35of all that,
28:35then there's more power
28:36to get out there.
28:39We're trying to break
28:40that racial divide, man.
28:43All right, thank you,
28:44I'm gonna throw in.
28:46I'm not saying
28:47that this is gonna
28:48change everything,
28:49you know,
28:49but it's a start
28:50for us, you know,
28:51for some of us
28:52that have been
28:53down some pretty
28:54rough roads, man.
28:56And if I can lead
28:57by example
28:57and say,
28:58hey, look,
29:01this is just
29:02a county jail.
29:03It's not prison
29:03and it's a total
29:04different entity,
29:05but if we start
29:06here,
29:08you know what,
29:08things can really
29:09happen over there.
29:10Trust me,
29:10I used to be a dietitian
29:12to cook for 358
29:13patients a day
29:13and two meals.
29:15Yeah, I got you.
29:16I told you I got you.
29:17Don't even worry about it.
29:18It's done.
29:20What we're trying to do
29:21is bring inclusion
29:22to everybody there.
29:24Unfortunately,
29:24you know,
29:24in Arizona,
29:25a lot of times
29:26it don't run that way.
29:27And just for us
29:28to be able to come
29:29together as a community
29:29actually
29:31and show
29:32sheriff people
29:33that there are people
29:34that are trying
29:34to do something different,
29:36just to be a part
29:36of this change
29:37is amazing.
29:38So I got two
29:38fucking oysters this time,
29:39two tunas,
29:40a rice,
29:41and a fucking,
29:41so you can put it in a log
29:42and your two soup
29:43and you can put it in a log
29:44and soup
29:44so it can be fucking amazing.
29:48It might be the last night
29:49of the program,
29:50kind of like
29:51the last supper,
29:52you know?
29:56Real quick, man,
29:57I want to,
29:57first of all,
29:58I want to thank you guys
29:59for coming down
30:00and this is a show
30:02of gratitude.
30:03Solidarity.
30:04Solidarity.
30:05Look,
30:06we're going to sit here,
30:07we're going to break bread,
30:08man,
30:08and we're going to
30:08come together as a pod
30:10and to show the world,
30:12man,
30:12that you know what,
30:13we can do this, man,
30:14we can do this.
30:17Woo!
30:20It was super cool
30:21to have every race
30:22sit down
30:22and then cook
30:23and you'll never see that.
30:25I've never seen that
30:25on any yard ever.
30:28We don't do that.
30:29It's unity.
30:30That's what every yard
30:31is supposed to be.
30:32That's what we're supposed to be.
30:36Dear Heavenly Father,
30:37please bless this meal
30:38we're about to receive, Lord,
30:39and thank you for your blessings
30:40throughout the day.
30:41We come to you humbly
30:44asking thanks
30:45for bringing this
30:47peace to this pod
30:48the whole six weeks
30:49we've been in here
30:50and we haven't had
30:50hardly any problems, Lord,
30:51and we want to put
30:52a hedge of protection
30:53around each and every
30:53one of these men.
30:54Lord, I'd really like
30:55to put a hedge of protection,
30:57Lord, around the drug addict
30:58that still suffers
30:59in and out of these jails,
31:00Lord.
31:01Watch their families
31:02and watch our families
31:03as well.
31:04In Jesus' sweet name
31:05I pray to you, amen.
31:06Amen.
31:20And each and every one of you
31:22I can look at
31:22is different
31:23in a little way
31:24than when you guys
31:24first came in here
31:25but really you guys
31:27just thank you
31:27for being part of my life
31:28right now, honestly.
31:29And my recovery
31:31and what I'm trying to do
31:32and just everything
31:33and I've messed up
31:34all that stuff.
31:35We love you too, Woody.
31:36All right, I'm going to
31:37shut up and eat
31:37and fuck you guys.
31:38Go to home.
31:39Thank you, I'm good enough now.
31:42Yeah, so like,
31:43we sad to you.
31:44I've been pushing that
31:45since I got here,
31:46like, we was already on this.
31:49Dang, like,
31:50this program really changing
31:51us for the better.
31:52Like, if y'all want
31:53to work the program
31:53and become a community
31:55and united,
31:56like, that's part of it.
31:58I'm trying to change
31:58the whole world
31:59in memory of my granny.
32:00Like, that's all I could
32:01do at this point.
32:02From the first time
32:03we did it from now,
32:05you know,
32:05it was a lot different
32:06for sure.
32:06Like, everyone just was
32:07just another normal day,
32:09you know,
32:09so it's cool.
32:42So for all you guys
32:43who ate mustard,
32:45I love mustard.
32:46Just understand something.
32:49So we're going to sign this.
32:50You let it sit for 10 minutes
32:53and then you wipe it off
32:55and it'll be like that forever.
32:56It's never going anywhere.
33:03This is it.
33:04Hard to believe we're here.
33:06Last day of a six-week experiment
33:08and it's all come down
33:08to the end.
33:11We didn't go into it
33:12thinking it was going
33:13to be a runaway success.
33:16There were times
33:17during this experiment
33:18I was just like,
33:19oh.
33:20Yeah.
33:23There were moments
33:24of conflict.
33:25Gentlemen, lock down.
33:26We got to go.
33:30But the inmates
33:31worked through them.
33:32I take this fucking shit
33:34serious right here.
33:35This is my fucking life.
33:36They are definitely
33:37the most responsible pod
33:38that we have.
33:39We've come a long way,
33:40me and you, huh?
33:42But at the end
33:43of the day,
33:43did they really make
33:44enough progress
33:45to keep this program going?
33:46Oh, my God.
33:47That's what I've been
33:48trying to decide.
34:11That's what I've been trying
34:17to decide.
34:17You know, I don't believe
34:18that people are going
34:19to put this kind
34:20of time and effort,
34:21us included,
34:22into this for it
34:23to just end.
34:24So maybe I'm looking
34:24at the positive side
34:25of it and hoping
34:26for much.
34:27But, you know,
34:28that's where I'm at
34:29right now.
34:29I want to see the positive
34:30in anything that I can.
34:34So, I talked to my staff
34:36and I'll be honest
34:38with you guys,
34:39I liked a lot of the input
34:41that I had
34:41when I came in here
34:43talking to you guys.
34:44I will also be honest
34:45with you guys,
34:46I think there's
34:47some people in here
34:48that are really,
34:49really, really working
34:50hard to better themselves
34:51and better this community
34:53and there's people
34:54in here that are
34:55just in here
34:55to get the freebies,
34:57the free phone calls
34:58and their game
34:58in the system.
35:01That's the God's honest truth.
35:04One of the things
35:05that I liked developing
35:06there was is
35:07they were actually
35:08using societal
35:10self-governance,
35:11not internal
35:11politics self-governance.
35:13They were starting
35:13to think like a neighborhood,
35:15not thinking about
35:15solely their race.
35:17Based on my experience
35:18working in the prison
35:19system for 12 years,
35:21seeing them all sit down
35:22at the same table
35:23and pray together,
35:24holding hands,
35:25is not something
35:27you ever see
35:27in the Arizona prison systems,
35:29especially when you
35:30account for the racial
35:31politics that exist.
35:33But I also need
35:34to acknowledge
35:34all of the problems
35:36we've had along the way.
35:37So you guys wanted
35:38to know what we decided?
35:47We're going to keep
35:47the doors unlocked.
35:48Let's continue on with this.
36:00Even though I definitely
36:01wasn't happy with all
36:03of their actions,
36:03the program as a whole
36:04was a success
36:05because they took
36:07the opportunity
36:08to develop life skills,
36:10making their own choices
36:11that they want
36:12to make their life better
36:13so they don't re-offend
36:15and they don't come back.
36:21We can't say thank you enough
36:28for giving us this opportunity,
36:29Sheriff.
36:37We're still going to continue
36:39to push forward
36:40and bring up
36:42the people behind us
36:43is what it's really all about.
36:45And so we thank you, man.
36:47We're really happy.
36:49Thanks, sir.
36:52The door's been unlocked.
36:53That's fantastic.
36:54It gives us room to move
36:55and create a better program.
36:59People make really bad choices,
37:00you know,
37:01that get us here,
37:02but at the end of the day,
37:04you know,
37:04there are starting to be ways
37:06to better that
37:07and that's awesome,
37:08you know,
37:08like the world's changing
37:10and hopefully it's better.
37:20You can actually get tanned, guys.
37:25Is anybody else's eyes tearing up?
37:28Fuck, that's bright.
37:39It's going good right now.
37:41You know,
37:41I spend my days,
37:42I get to talk to my daughters,
37:44you know,
37:45and focus on sobriety
37:47and getting a degree,
37:49you know,
37:50like it out
37:50that I can maybe get
37:51into electrical work.
37:53And so the program
37:54at Pennell County
37:55has helped me.
37:56I want to experience life now
37:58and I know I need to start now
38:00if I ever have a chance
38:01when I get out.
38:03It's kind of humbling.
38:21People go to college,
38:22they go into fraternities.
38:23Well,
38:23this was like a fraternity.
38:25We were all a family.
38:26We were one family,
38:27we were just trying to do better.
38:28I'm going to hold everybody accountable
38:29because I'm holding
38:30myself accountable.
38:45I want to be a different animal
38:50when I get out of here.
38:51I'm still going to be an animal,
38:52you know what I mean?
38:53But...
38:53Can't change that.
38:54Instead of being a grizzly,
38:55I'm going to be a panda bear.
38:57You know what I mean?
38:57Hey, they're pretty vicious.
38:59I've been a fucking thug
39:01and a fucking gangster
39:02my whole life.
39:03And, you know,
39:04I'm done with it.
39:15I don't want to be
39:16all out no more.
39:17I just want to go home.
39:18I just want to get out
39:19and be with my kids
39:20and just start building
39:22relationships with people
39:23and building relationships
39:24with my family.
39:27Any more questions?
39:42How you guys doing?
39:44Getting better every day.
39:46For the number of infractions
39:48that take place in that pod,
39:50they are significantly less
39:51than the other pods
39:53inside my jail.
39:54I'd like to get over here.
39:55This is one of my pet projects.
39:56Just to get over with you guys
39:58and I'd like to get
39:59a little one-on-one information
40:00from you.
40:01And we're going to keep on with it
40:02and I'm happy to say
40:03it's still working to this day.
40:16So since I've been out,
40:17I've just been working,
40:17going to class, you know,
40:19trying to stay out of trouble.
40:21Spending time with my family
40:22and that shit.
40:26These guys want to leave me.
40:28They want to leave me for nothing.
40:32I was fucking up,
40:33but my eyes got open.
40:36We don't got to keep doing
40:37what we're doing, you know.
40:38It's never late to turn back.
40:41Go throw this inside the back
40:42over there in the closet, please.
40:43With the dirty clothes.
40:46Before I got locked up.
40:47I was putting my kids
40:48and her to the side
40:49for that drug.
40:50This time, you know,
40:51that's all that was on my mind.
40:52My kids, my kids, my kids, my kids.
40:55Walk, walk, walk, walk, walk, walk.
41:02So this is what I accomplished
41:04by doing good, you know,
41:05my family.
41:06I fell, but now I got myself up.
41:09And I just don't want to go back
41:10to that life no more.
41:31I got myself up.
41:33You know,
41:33I got myself up.
41:33Bye.
