00:15to do something really different
00:17with this game, and to give people
00:19things that they've never seen before.
00:21As designers, we're often tasked with
00:23this really difficult problem
00:25of inventing fun.
00:29One of the things we really struggled
00:30on was the tactical nature
00:32of the game, which we're really trying to improve that,
00:34bring it to the next level. We went back, we spent months
00:36looking at, you know,
00:38trying to go back through time about what really represented
00:40the things that we wanted to bring to the game.
00:41I think people want something new.
00:44We've done the real-time
00:46first-person shooter.
00:48We beat that to death.
00:49There's more to strategy than just
00:51landing a headshot. That's talent,
00:54right? But you have to be able
00:56to look ahead. You have to sort of plan
00:58your moves out carefully.
00:59It takes a strategy component
01:01and introduces it to the Halo
01:04universe that we really haven't done
01:06in the past. We've made a number
01:08of sort of big
01:09changes, and this is all part of our new paradigm.
01:12It's all from the ground
01:14up, brand new. They've been really just
01:16driving this from day one. It kind of just
01:18spawned out of this, like, what can we
01:20do with Halo that has not been
01:22done before? We've heard you.
01:24We've reacted. We've listened.
01:28And now what we're doing
01:30is we're bringing chess
01:31to Halo.
01:34Chess is the longest-running
01:36competitive multiplayer game in the world,
01:38and I don't see why our version
01:40can't continue that legacy.
01:42Obviously they're doing something, right?
01:44Like, they've got this game,
01:46doesn't really have many options, and
01:47why don't we give it a try?
01:48We tried to give them each
01:50weapons that really correlated to
01:52the purpose of that particular unit.
01:55You are restricted to the moves
01:57that each of the characters can do.
01:58Everybody brings a little bit of a different
02:00perspective, different experience to the table.
02:03If it's a good idea, we just say,
02:04absolutely, let's change direction.
02:06Let's go with that.
02:07We wanted to figure out something we could do,
02:10sort of bring fun back to Halo.
02:14Chess is about the oldest kind
02:15of slayer there is.
02:16You start off as the monitor,
02:18and when you're ready to make your move,
02:19you go down, you pick that piece,
02:21and then you are actually put
02:23into that character, and then you're
02:25able to control that character.
02:27That, to me, was one of those things
02:28that sparked a little bit of life in the game.
02:33I'm excited to see how it turns out.
02:34I'm really excited.
02:36But, I don't know, whatever.
02:37Every game you think you're doing the right thing,
02:38and that turns out you f***ed something up.
