How long will Alex Cora manage the Boston Red Sox?
Transcript
00:00It was about Alex Cora and I wonder if this will get other people's heart rate up.
00:03So Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe, he had an exclusive sit down with Alex Cora last week and
00:09I saw this Friday, I believe it came out in the Globe Friday. He asked him a lot of questions
00:15about what he sees as his end date as manager of the Boston Red Sox. So first he asked him
00:21a little
00:22bit about his future plan. I'm just wondering how you guys decipher these quotes. First thing Cora
00:27says is the cool thing is we're not talking too much about the future. We're talking about
00:32the present. And then when asked about an end date for him as manager, Cora said, we have
00:37to talk about it. We made a decision on the last contract to keep it at three years and
00:42there was a reason. I like where the team's at. It's fun again. We have a good chance to
00:47do what the group did in 18. They only won one, but we can get to the playoffs consistently
00:52and that's what you want. So a lot of fun again. Yeah. Is that because Heimblum is
00:57gone and because they couldn't stand each other? Maybe because Devers is gone and the
01:01locker room is lighter? Maybe because Devers is gone. Yeah, maybe. I don't know if I'm
01:05just, you know, got media brain, but those comments and having talked to Cora in the past
01:11with this station, hearing him talk about his interest in maybe the front office, other
01:17aspects of the game, knowing that he's only under contract through the 2027 season. He has
01:23young kids. I do believe he's getting married in the near future. I just wonder if he's
01:30going to sign another contract extension past 2027 or if he's going to try to Pat Riley slash
01:36Brad Stevens it and do something else.
01:40Well, this is the year for him, right? Because this is something that we were talking about
01:44maybe when we were down in Fort Myers. When you start to look at this baseball team and
01:50the direction that they're going in, it's coming to the point where it's like, all right,
01:55can Alex Cora get this team to another World Series or is it time to find new blood, a fresh
02:04face in that clubhouse? And I feel like this is the season that's either going to make or
02:09break. If they're another one and done or if they get, you know, like they were last year,
02:13was it the wild card game, the playing game, whatever the hell they're calling that.
02:16If he's not able to get them into a deep playoff run, aren't people saying, well,
02:21is it time for a new manager? Oh, so you think that he could, his seat could be getting a
02:26little
02:26warm. Oh, I think his seat is extremely warm. I think it is not hot at all. And my thing
02:33is,
02:34if I were Cora, I would like to go to the front office because you have far more say and
02:39discretion
02:40as a GM of a baseball team than you do as a manager right now. All he does, we talked
02:44about it with
02:45Breslow. What up with it? Crochet, the 85 pitches last season. Like he is being directed by AI and
02:52bots about how to manage the team. Whereas if at least you're the president of the baseball
02:57operation, then you have a say in how the roster is made. Please call driveline. Ha ha ha.
03:05Yeah. I mean, I think he has a job here for as long as he wants it. Don't you, Curtis?
03:11Yeah. Like I can't see them saying goodbye to him. I would be shocked. And I, I actually read
03:18those quotes at Meggo as like, wow, it sounds like he's not near the end that he's finally
03:23enjoying this. Last year was a slog, but this off season has revitalized him. I mean, when we
03:28talked with him in Fort Myers, Wiggy, Greg, and I also, or me also the same thing after, like
03:33he is such a different guy this season. Yeah. He was so chill. He was so optimistic. He was
03:38totally at peace with himself. I think it's just, he'll be here for several years if he
03:43wants to. I do think that there's a trend with him over the last couple of years where
03:46it seems like he's healthy. Like, you know, he's doing the running thing and he seems a
03:51lot happier, but I just wonder, he still seems like he's a young guy. What is he? 50 for
03:58decide. He always said that he doesn't want to be like Terry Francona and managing, you know,
04:04into his sixties. Now, somebody else around here said something similar back in the day
04:10in Bill Belichick. So who knows? You don't know how you're going to feel until you get
04:13there. I know a lot of people, Curtis, read those quotes like you. The first part I just
04:19thought, wow, yeah, like he, either he's taking a strong negotiating starting point of saying
04:24like, well, we did three years for a reason last time because I don't really trust this
04:29organization or he's thinking, I don't know what I want to do next. And I, I still think
04:35that he's a good, really great manager. So that would be a loss. It's going to be very
04:38interesting, Meg, because you do bring it, you bring up some good points that he's only
04:4250 years old, right? And he's got, he just re-ups. So I believe he has two years left
04:49through 27 next season. Right. So what does he want to do? I mean, I feel different than you
04:56guys, as far as like, I think the Red Sox, if, if they struggle and they don't do well,
05:00I think that they'll be looking to make a change at manager because you know, when you've seen
05:05of what core has been able to accomplish his time here, the past few years, he hasn't been
05:10great. And I think that they might want to change that. Well, there also may not be a baseball
05:15season next year. So that's a good point. That may change, but that's a good point. But I guess
05:19to my point, he's so young. And like you said, if he doesn't want to manage in his sixties,
05:24is he going to say, all right, I'm going to walk away from managing by the time I'm 53.
