00:25I had read a book called Journey to the West
00:28which is a 400 year old Chinese novel it's been adapted into lots of
00:36different mediums there was a TV show in the UK which was massive Damon Albarn
00:40just did an opera so it's always had this kind of undercurrent of coolness
00:43about it to me when I talked about possibility of doing a game which is
00:53driven by two characters and it's quite a big and quite an ambitious thing to do
00:57to actually want to invest in an emotionally complex journey just
01:02between the two characters
01:09as soon as the project started I grabbed a copy of Journey to the West and we sat
01:13down read through it and just kind of looked at what elements we could use
01:18so we took that book and based it in a post-apocalyptic North America
01:26replaced all the magic of the old book with technology and the demons with military droids
01:36there are going to be many games in the future in the next five to ten years I think which
01:39which as I say they'll stop just being classified as films and they will be events
01:46no matter how hard we've been trying to make stories work they're at the level of B movies
01:51compared to the best movies so we wanted to kind of attempt to bridge that gap
01:56so it was an immense challenge but we had a terrific writer Alex Garland who came on board
02:02he's done some great books and films the beach 28 days later
02:05we actually sat down with Alex through a series of workshops so we got the main story arc going
02:11we decided what locations we were going to use
02:13we had worked through the story and the level designs together
02:17strung together this road trip effectively
02:19when I originally agreed to do this project
02:22it was actually to come on board as a director
02:25and then some way down the line
02:28I was looking at some artwork and saw the original drawings from Monkey
02:33and thought actually you know that would be quite a cool character to play
02:39the other character is trip and she grew up in a community that her father set up
02:45I absolutely see some of myself in trip I mean it's it's certainly in a different medium
02:50but I still I still really am her
02:57so the journey actually begins with both monkey and trip captured on a slave ship
03:02trip escapes at the beginning
03:04in the process of escaping she actually shorts the whole system
03:07and causes it to crash
03:11monkey survives because he's so strong so he punches and fights his way through
03:16after the ship crashes they both end up in New York
03:19so she spots her main charles who is this big brute
03:22while monkey's unconscious trip sticks this slave headband
03:26which is used to control slaves onto his head
03:30you put this on me
03:32let me explain
03:33get this thing off
03:34or I'm gonna rip your head off
03:36and he has to obey her orders
03:38or else she causes him an immense amount of physical pain
03:42please stop me
03:46she does this because she knows that the city is teeming with inactive mechs
03:51what she wants him to do is to take her back to her community which she's been plucked out
03:57you know she's not doing it because she hates him she's doing it because she has to
04:00I die
04:02you die
04:04oh
04:06and so they start this uneasy journey together
04:21she's the brains if you like and you're the brawn and together you can defeat pretty much anything you come
04:26across
04:35Grazie a tutti.
