00:02Venture is an arcade game that rarely gets the attention it actually deserves.
00:07Fact is, even when I was a kid I had never actually even seen a Venture arcade cabinet in any
00:12local arcade.
00:13The only time that I got to see this game was playing one of the multiple ports that were available
00:18at the time.
00:20In the game you take control of the character Winky.
00:23He is descended into the dungeons in search of hidden treasure.
00:26Unfortunately, each of the dungeons are filled with various monsters and traps.
00:31You must avoid them at all costs.
00:34The game takes place over three levels, each representing a different area of the dungeon.
00:39Each of these levels has four separate rooms, each containing a piece of hidden treasure.
00:44The rooms are filled with enemies or traps protecting the hidden treasure.
00:48Your goal is to enter each of these rooms and escape with the treasure.
00:53When playing Venture you'll notice that there's two different types of views when playing the game.
00:58The first is an overhead view which encompasses the entire level of the dungeon.
01:03Winky will appear as a small dot and you'll navigate him from room to room grabbing the treasure.
01:09While in that map screen, Winky has no defenses.
01:13And that's a problem as there's multiple hull monsters trying to stop him at every turn.
01:18When entering any of the treasure rooms, the game will then zoom in and give you a closer look at
01:23the room itself.
01:25You'll notice that Winky now has a bow and arrow that he can use in his defense against enemies within
01:30the treasure room.
01:31The goal again once you get into the room is to grab the treasure and get out as soon as
01:36possible.
01:36If you stay in the room too long, one of the hull monsters will enter the room and try to
01:42attack you.
01:43Unfortunately, Winky's bow and arrow is no defense against the hull monsters.
01:47And one hit will cause you to lose a life.
01:51The original arcade version of Venture is a very fun yet extremely challenging game.
01:56The difficulty level gets up there pretty quickly as you move through the levels.
02:00Enemies start moving quicker and evading your attacks more efficiently.
02:05One problem with the game is that occasionally when you leave a room, a hull monster is there right on
02:11the other side and will kill you instantaneously.
02:13There's nothing that you can do to avoid this attack.
02:17Thankfully, this small flaw does not deter from the other positive aspects of the game.
02:24It's really a shame, but Venture never got a big showing on the home market.
02:29There's actually only three ports that I'm personally aware of.
02:33I'd like to take the time right now to show you the three ports and we'll take a look to
02:38see how they compare against the original.
02:41The first port we'll take a look at is Venture on the Atari 2600.
02:45The first thing that you'll most likely notice are the graphics for the game, which are fairly decent for the
02:51Atari 2600.
02:52They very accurately represent the graphics that are present in the original arcade version.
02:59Also like the original, you still have the overhead dungeon layouts and zoomed in views within each of the treasure
03:06rooms.
03:07The rooms remain intact with the same types of monsters and traps that exist within the arcade version.
03:14Unfortunately, only the first two levels from the arcade version have made it into this port.
03:21The third version was not included.
03:25Another thing missing from this version is the treasure collection screen.
03:30In the arcade version, whenever you went to the next level or you lost a life,
03:35you would be brought to a screen that would display all of the treasures that you have collected throughout the
03:40game.
03:40This is missing in the port, however, that does not detract from the game in any way.
03:45One issue that does detract from gameplay in this port, however,
03:49is the sluggish speed that Winky moves within each of the treasure rooms.
03:55On the overhead dungeon view, Winky moves at a quick pace similar to that of the original arcade game.
04:02Once inside the room, however, it's a completely different story.
04:06He moves at such a slow pace that it can seem to take forever for him to get to the
04:11treasure and get out.
04:14This sluggish pace, unfortunately, makes the game quite boring to play at times,
04:19and I personally can't play this port for any long stretch of time.
04:25On a positive note, the control on this port is quite tight and responsive.
04:32You'll never really have any issue with navigating Winky around the dungeon or through any of the rooms.
04:42Due to the lack of the original third level for the game, as well as the sluggish movement for Winky,
04:50I can only really recommend this port to fans of the Atari 2600 system.
04:55If you're not a die-hard fan of the Atari 2600, there are better ports of Venture available for home
05:02consoles.
05:03Let's take a look at one of those now.
05:09So I'm not gonna lie, the first time that I was presented with the Intellivision version of Venture, I wasn't
05:14expecting much.
05:16But to my surprise, I was presented with an extremely fun and addictive game.
05:22One thing that really stood out to me regarding this port was that they included the music from the original
05:27arcade game.
05:28But while the music implementation is very basic on the Intellivision, they do have the exact themes that you hear
05:37in the arcade release.
05:42The overall gameplay for this port is terrific.
05:46First of all, the controls are spot on.
05:49Even with the original Intellivision 16-way controller, you'll have no problem navigating Wimpy through the mazes.
05:55But the speed at which Wimpy moves is the most impressive.
06:00He'll be able to zip around the map screen, allowing you to go from one room to another.
06:04And once entering those rooms, you can quickly zip, grab the treasure, and escape from the room, unharmed.
06:11Making this a very exciting play.
06:14The first time I ever played the Intellivision port of Venture, it was already up and running on the console,
06:20and I was simply handed the controller to continue playing.
06:23And one thing that had stuck out to me at that time was the overall lack of difficulty.
06:28It was unknown to me at the time, but there are multiple skill levels that you can configure when starting
06:34your game.
06:35This is fairly common for games in the era.
06:39The only reason I point this out is just because the lowest skill level setting for this game will literally
06:45allow you to play for hours without ever dying.
06:48If you want a little bit more challenge, simply raise that skill level a bit and you'll be good to
06:54go.
06:55An interesting thing to note is that the Intellivision port is the only port adventure that accurately reproduces the way
07:03that you kill enemies in the treasure room.
07:05When you shoot an enemy, they will slowly dissolve away in the room.
07:11Even while there are a couple of dots of that enemy left, running into the remains of the enemy will
07:16actually kill you.
07:18This is exactly how the original arcade version was run.
07:22On any of the other ports available, when you hit an enemy, it will stay in solid form for a
07:28couple of seconds before completely disappearing off the screen.
07:32The slowly dissolving enemy obviously raises the difficulty level slightly as you must avoid the remains on your way through
07:41the room.
07:42I highly recommend the Intellivision port adventure to both fans of the Intellivision and fans of the original adventure arcade
07:51game.
07:52You will not go wrong picking up this port.
07:56However, this isn't the end of our journey through the ports adventure.
08:00There's still one more port to look at, and that one is on the ColecoVision.
08:07People who know me well would not be at all surprised to hear that this is my favorite port of
08:12the game given that I am a huge ColecoVision fan.
08:14But playing through these three ports again, one after another, just further solidifies my thought that this is the best
08:23home port available for venture.
08:26The graphics in this port really do stick out, as they most closely represent the arcade version of any of
08:33the three ports.
08:35Winky is highly detailed within the treasure rooms, as are each of the enemies.
08:40The only piece that it does lack is, again, the way that the enemies are killed.
08:45When you shoot an enemy, they will simply freeze in place for a few seconds before completely disappearing off screen.
08:51This does make the game a little bit easier compared to the original arcade and the Intellivision ports.
08:58But I don't personally feel that it detracts very much from the game.
09:03The in-game music for the ColecoVision port adventure is a step up from that provided within the Intellivision port.
09:10Obviously, due to the differences within the two consoles, the ColecoVision sound hardware was allowing the developers to more accurately
09:18represent the sounds that existed in the arcade version.
09:23But like the Intellivision port, the ColecoVision port provides all three levels of the original arcade game, which means that
09:32it provided you the full arcade experience at home.
09:36Extra screens, such as the treasure collection screen, are also included to add to the experience.
09:45Overall gameplay is absolutely fantastic.
09:49Control, game speed, the way that monsters evade your attacks are all very accurate to the original arcade version.
09:58It's the speed of the game that makes it an extremely exciting experience to play.
10:05To go along with the excellent gameplay, the ColecoVision port also brings all three original levels from the arcade game,
10:15bringing you the most accurate arcade experience to the home console.
10:21I highly recommend Venture to both casual and hardcore gamers alike.
10:27Pick up any of these ports, but specifically I would suggest tracking down the ColecoVision port, or if you can,
10:34the original arcade version, to get the best experience for this game.
10:38I don't think that you will be disappointed.
10:43I'd like to thank you again for taking time to watch this review.
10:46This is Golden signing off.
10:48See you again soon.
