00:04Welcome to a very special episode of Playing Dead
00:07I'm AJ Locasio and I'm here in Oakland, California
00:09at the Image Comics Expo
00:11Today, we'll be interviewing Robert Kirkman
00:13the creator of Walking Dead
00:15and revealing for the first time anywhere
00:17Telltale's game in action
00:18right here on Playing Dead
00:29So, Robert, thank you so much for talking to us today
00:32Hey, thanks for having me, this is pretty cool
00:34So, a lot of fans want to know, and I want to know
00:37why is this not a story about Rick from the comic books?
00:41Well, I mean, the Walking Dead universe is a thing where
00:44you see Rick's story
00:45and you've seen pretty much every minute of Rick's story
00:49and I don't think
00:50the way the show works is
00:53we're changing things up
00:54so you're seeing a different Rick story
00:56but this game is very much set in the universe of the comic book series
01:00and if you were playing with Rick
01:03you would basically be doing the same stuff
01:05or you would be playing some kind of BS game
01:07that doesn't really have anything to do with the comic series
01:10What's unique about this game
01:12is by focusing on a character that isn't key to the comic book series
01:16you're able to see stories that actually do matter to the continuity
01:20you're seeing
01:21you're going to be seeing
01:22like Glenn, for instance
01:23Right
01:24That's the comic book Glenn
01:25The story that you're going to see in this game
01:27actually happened in the universe of the Walking Dead comic book series
01:31and so you may get a little bit of insight
01:33into what his life was like
01:35before he lived in the comic book
01:38so it makes the game a little bit more important
01:40and it'll be a little bit more fulfilling for fans
01:43which I think is cool
01:44So Telltale's known mostly for their adventure games
01:47but a lot of people want to know
01:49why isn't this an open world shooter
01:50with guns and chainsaws and what have you
01:54what's your take on this?
01:55That's what appealed to me about Telltale
01:58You can play Left 4 Dead
02:00You can play Dead Rising
02:01You can play Resident Evil
02:02Those are all great games
02:03and I do that
02:03and I think other people should do that
02:05but to do a Walking Dead game
02:07that's just that
02:07would be pointless
02:09I think that you would always be compared to that
02:11and you'd either be better
02:12you'd be worse
02:13but you'd be the same kind of game
02:14and that's no fun
02:15and the thing that's important about The Walking Dead
02:17is that it has heart
02:18and it has drama
02:19and it's about people surviving in this world
02:21and it's about how they deal with the end of the world
02:23and how they interact with other people
02:25and what that does to a person
02:27it's all about evolution
02:29and how a character changes over time
02:34and that's something that Telltale is able to actually incorporate in the game
02:38which they wouldn't be able to do
02:39if it was just a run and gun
02:40like I like to cut people up kind of game
02:42which again are great
02:44but that's not what Telltale does
02:46and that's why they're doing The Walking Dead game
02:48this is going to be a game
02:49where you're going to see these characters make decisions
02:52and those decisions are going to affect the outcome of the game
02:55and that's really exciting to me
02:56the fact that you'll be able to play through this game
02:58from start to finish
02:59and then start over again
03:02and make different choices
03:03and the game will be substantially different
03:06because of those choices
03:08is really unique and exciting to me
03:10and that's really what we wanted to do here
03:12Telltale designed the game to look quite a bit like the comic book
03:15like Charlie's artwork
03:17what was your reaction to that when you first saw it?
03:20People do that thing where they go
03:21okay there's certain aspects to a comic book that are really cool
03:24and I'm going to try and replicate that
03:27whether it's word balloons, funny captions
03:29or if I can be critical of a game that I absolutely love
03:32I think that the art style of the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 game
03:36with the cross-hatching and the weird line work on the figures
03:39I wish that game just looked like Street Fighter 4
03:42I'll be honest with you
03:42I'm a comic book guy and I don't like the way that stuff looks
03:45so when they came to me and they were like
03:46we're going to try and make this look like Charlie Adlard's art
03:49I was like, we'll see
03:52but the way they've done it is just so
03:55I don't know, it's really impressive to me
03:57I think it's a unique look
03:58I think it's something that you can't really get in any other game
04:01and it just looks really cool
04:03and it has a comic book feel
04:05but it doesn't take
04:07a lot of times when people try to do that
04:09they take limitations in the comic book space
04:12and they apply them to a medium that has limitations of its own
04:15and it messes the whole thing up
04:18but they've taken the best parts of comic books
04:20and adapted it into a visual style
04:21that I think is really unique and really exciting
04:23and I don't know, it's a cool looking game
04:25I enjoy looking at it
04:26So last year you wrote a book called Rise of the Governor
04:29that you co-wrote, right?
04:31Yes, absolutely
04:31I co-wrote Rise of the Governor with a talented guy named J. Bonansinga
04:36J. Bonansinga
04:37Yes, and it was a cool book and we had a good time working on it
04:41And now, so with Telltale you are essentially collaborating with them
04:46but you're not necessarily writing the whole thing
04:48you've got the charming Gary Whitta
04:49Yes, the charming and somewhat British Gary Whitta
04:52Yes, and the writers at Telltale
04:55and you're not, how are you involved with that?
04:58Well, I mean, I've learned to collaborate to a certain extent
05:02by working on The Walking Dead show
05:03I've learned that other people have good ideas
05:06and I should listen to them more
05:07which is a lot of fun
05:08I'm joking, I mean, the comic book medium is all about collaborating with artists
05:12and working together to form better ideas
05:16but it's on a much bigger scale in television
05:19which is kind of cool
05:19and so being able to interact with people
05:22and come up with better stories is a lot of fun
05:24and when you're doing an adaptation
05:26you always want to make sure that you pick the right team
05:28and when you're talking to somebody, you know right away
05:31whether or not they get the idea
05:32and whether or not they understand its intent
05:35and whether or not they're going to do it justice
05:36and in talking to Telltale
05:38it was immediately, you know, clear to me
05:41that, you know, they love The Walking Dead
05:42they know The Walking Dead
05:43you know, they want to do it justice
05:45They're all fanboys
05:46Exactly
05:47And so, you know, knowing that, you know
05:50they're going to do this has been, you know
05:52really comforting to me
05:54and also, like, when we sit down to talk about story
05:56you know, they're pitching ideas to me
05:59they're going over certain things
06:00and, you know, it's always me just going
06:02wow, that's a good idea
06:03hey, I really like that
06:04hey, good job, kids
06:06you know, I'm not really that kind of
06:08I hope that's what you sound like
06:09ah, good job
06:10and then you leave
06:11I've got a cigar
06:11and like a news hat
06:13sitting there with a newspaper
06:15You're all brilliant
06:16you'll be stars one day
06:16drinking coffee like an adult
06:18but
06:19like an adult
06:20whatever adults do
06:21you know
06:23but, and then, you know
06:24and then they've brought in Gary Wooda
06:25to help out and do that kind of stuff
06:27and that's just a really good team
06:28and, you know, I love Book of Eli
06:31Gary's a buddy of mine
06:32I think he's a fantastic writer
06:33who's also a huge fan of The Walking Dead
06:35and, you know
06:36knowing that these guys
06:37are not only fans
06:39but also, you know
06:40talented writers
06:40who, you know
06:41are going to do the thing justice
06:42has been, you know
06:43really good for me
06:44you know, because I am a busy dude
06:46and, you know
06:46it's very important to me
06:47that this game
06:48you know, feel like The Walking Dead
06:50and be true to The Walking Dead
06:52you know, comic
06:53and, you know
06:54really do it justice
06:55we're going to take a short break
06:57to show you what you've been waiting for
06:59a first look at Telltale's The Walking Dead

09:01her parents are out of town
09:04let's get going
09:05staying put for too long is a mistake
09:08so it's just you and your daughter then
09:11oh, not his daughter
09:12he was her neighbor
09:13honey, do you know this man?
09:16yes
09:19okay then
09:20well
09:21looks like you hurt your leg pretty bad there
09:24how'd this happen?
09:29car accident
09:30that so
09:31where were you headed
09:32before the car accident?

09:51what is it?
09:52I don't know who you are
09:54or what you did
09:55but you better become a better liar
09:58fast
10:01so what do you want Walking Dead fans
10:03to take away from this game?
10:04what do you want this experience to be?
10:06I mean, it's a heightening
10:07of the overall Walking Dead experience
10:09it's, I've read the comics
10:10I've watched the show
10:12you know, I've bought the lunch box
10:13Robert Kirkman
10:14there's lunch boxes?
10:15Robert Kirkman is a sellout
10:16yeah, of course
10:17if after all that stuff
10:19you know, you still want more
10:20like, I want you to get a fulfilled experience
10:22I want you to be able to
10:24spend a little bit more time in the world
10:25I mean, this is kind of a cool thing
10:26because
10:27you know, when you read the comic
10:28or you watch the show
10:29you know, that's
10:30that's a certain kind of experience
10:33there's an interaction to it
10:34a little bit
10:35you know, where you're thinking about
10:36how you would kind of, you know
10:38live in this situation
10:39or what kind of decisions you would make
10:41and
10:42you know, this is really a heightening of that
10:43in that you can
10:44you can interact with these characters now
10:46and you can kind of
10:47submerse yourself
10:48or immerse yourself
10:49or
10:50some
10:50some word that ends in merce
10:53I don't know
10:53that works
10:54but I mean, you know
10:55being able to
10:56to spend some time in the Walking Dead world
10:58in a way that you've never been able to before
11:00is
11:01is awesome
11:02and
11:03and I think that's what people are going to get out of this game
11:05and that's what I want them to get out of the game
11:06I want them to
11:07feel the terror
11:08and feel the loss
11:09and feel the horrible decisions
11:11that you have to make
11:12in order to survive
11:13you're a terrible person
11:14do I
11:14yeah, I like to torture people
11:15do I
11:16do I steal this food
11:17and make this other person starve
11:19so that I can
11:20you know
11:20give it to this person
11:21who I want to live
11:22like
11:23can
11:23can you
11:24you know
11:24do that
11:25and
11:25I don't know
